I loved the details in this book. There is a sequal out, newly released for other local areas. I think even if you aren't from the area, the stories of the dead that are listed in here are excellent. The details of how to find neat info on grave stones are fascinating. This is a great title and I am looking forward to reading the next one.

Anyone familiar with Christopher Gray's Streetscapes column in the Sunday NY Times will love this compilation of his articles.
The column focuses on New York's official and unofficial landmarks and historic sites. Changing New York serves as a handbook on what still is discoverable, a eulogy for lost treasures, and a call to action on endangered sites. All this combined with Gray's knack for uncovering connections through his meticulous detective work.

I own and treasure the 1951 edition of this book. I don't know whether the 1981 reissue is exactly the same but I hope so because the first edition is looking better and better. Grey's point of view is that estrogens are great for women enduring a tough menopause (she called it the "blessed meno medicine") but should be used cautiously and no longer than really necessary. Now that some real double blind randomised placebo trials are finally being done it looks like she may have been right on target. "Menopause is not a disease" she states, "and brings with it no disease. As a result many of us take this step so easily, so comfortably, we need no help from first to last.. Our own "wisdom of the body" sees us through. "For herself, Gray explains, she desperately needed the "blessed medicine" because she'd had a surgical menopause which as she states correctly is likely to make the transition much harsher. Believe it or not she also recommends androgens for some women and discusses all the different ways to get estrogen (no patches yet but pellets, suppositories, injections, pills etc. ) You'll be astonished at how many different regimens and products were available by 1950.

This reprint of an original 1878 edition written by John Henry Gray and originally published by Macmillan provides a readable history of China dating from the late 19th century when author Gray served as the Archdeacon of Hong Kong. Gray charted the legends of China and provided insights into its government, society, belief systems and class system: add a first-person observational tone and you have a winner.

This book chronicles the adventures of Brian and Todd as they undertake a variety of paranormal investigations. Brian is a Native American and his ancestors give him help with an amulet known as the Spirit Stone. They use the stone to help in investigations that are connected to a set of prophecies. With the help of the prophecies, their spirit guides and visits from an occasion ET they delve headfirst into the world of the paranormal. However, the adventure goes beyond a typical paranormal story by intricately lacing together the paranormal with spirituality and even ETs. Overall, the characters are well rounded and the story is well written. It is a fun read that will leave you wanting for more.

This book is great. I never knew there were this many dining choices in Cleveland. Laura adds just enough detail about each establishment that you can enjoy the history as well. New to this edition is an expansion beyond Cleveland to include other cities in Ohio.

'Grand adventures await those who are willing to turn the corner.' So read my fortune cookie at lunch last month at Pearl of the Orient, a recent eating-as-adventure experience inspired by the 2003 edition of Taxel's marvelous guidebook. Amidst her detailed narrative about Cleveland's flavorful places I've penciled my own annotations to those we've tried: Mughal (Indian); Niko's (Greek); Trattoria Roman Gardens (Italian); Balaton (Hungarian); Phil the Fire (African-American/Southern);Johnny Mango (international)...and more! What a great low-cost way to 'travel'! We're definitely looking forward to new discoveries in the 2005 edition. As a retired librarian, I'm very enthused about how the information is organized especially Taxel's indexes. Restaurants and ethnic markets are not only indexed by name, location, and country but also by idea (different fun suggestions such as 'Al Fresco' and 'Desserts to Die For'). I also enjoy reading Taxel in the Cleveland newspaper and in Northern Ohio Live and other regional magazines.

The light flared across a face intimately familiar, the face that had smiled down on him all his life. The face was that of his father. He was dead, and on his chest was a piece of paper that carried the words---the same words laid upon the corpses of other Caywoods by the unseen killer in the woods.
