Gay Religion is not only a must read for theologians, but also for the student, the professional, and the layperson. Thumma and Gray did a great job including various aspects of Gay Religion in the current American culture - from circuit parties and Faeries, to evangelicals and everything in-between. The presentation of these various religious practices is enlightening, even if one questions the practice as a legitimate "religion or religious practice"- but isn't that the beauty of living in the United States (at least in theory). I recommend Gay Religion as a great introduction to the landscape of current religion and religious practices of American gay men and women.

This book is a must read for any religious leader regardless their opinion on gay and lesbian issues. Thumma and Gray have assembled ethnographies that cover the gamut of the American religious spectrum. The chapters are interesting and often compelling. The editors appear not to espouse an opinion or judgment on the individual reports letting each stand on its own merit. This is particular refreshing. It's important to note these chapters are ethnographies. The tone is generally academic often based on field studies and reporting.

I disagree with Publishers Weekly about the timeliness of several of the reports. While they may be older reports, I found them still relevant. I'm sure if there were more recent reports the editors would have included them.

"Can We Talk" about "Gay Unions"?

This most recent book by Gray Temple is the most informed, candid and rational discussion of this emotional topic that I have read. In typical fashion for this author, it is both straightforward and kind. Drawing on the Anglican trilateral- authority of Scripture, Tradition and Reason as one thing about which Episcopalians still agree, Temple's approach is scholarly and pastoral as he dares to take the Bible seriously---not literally! He unpacks the topic of scriptural authority and invites people on both sides of this debate to embrace not merely a change of mind (he concedes that is not likely), but a "change of heart" and mind based on honesty and integrity in our dealing with this issue and how we decide what is "right and wrong". This is a must read for anyone who is serious about seeking reconciliation in the church.

When you pick up your first copy of Gay Unions: In the Light of Scripture, Tradition, and Reason by Gray Temple, you might want to run your eyes over the pages paying special attention to punctuation. Question marks pepper the book. The first chapter begins with a proposal, "Can We Talk?" As I read the author's invitation, I detect a tone of voice that verges on a plea. You can converse with this writing as it opens into questions Temple must have asked himself as he prayerfully allowed his own mind to be changed.

The scholarship? He serves it warm. The reasoning? His arguments, though firm, are presented as gently as possible. He's hoping you'll hit the ball back over the net and get a rally going. He uses parables and wit, liberal doses of both. You'll laugh. You'll be tempted to steal his stories. But ultimately Gay Unions tends to produce an enlargement of the heart which, you realize, isn't entirely safe. Read carefully. Trust God.

With each word and paragraph I was amazed how God gave Marty the ability to put on paper what a grandmother feels but cannot articulate in words. It was as if she read my heart.

You will laugh, find encouragement, and be inspired in your grandmother role.

Get Well Soon Book is absolutely hilarious, sparkling and original, and zany. Any who have bemoaned illness - including adults - will find this a jolly title which has a very simple message: there's always someone worse off. Harry the hamster gets his whiskers caught in his wheel, Danny the Dalmatian breaks out in stripes, and Delia the Dragon sneezes and catches herself on fire in this very simple yet heartwarming picturebook.

A cute little book sure to cheer up the ailing young child

This is a cute little book aimed at the youngest of readers, featuring fun, vibrant, color illustrations with short captions. The message of the book is that doctors make everything better when you get hurt or sick. I know how much I hated going to the doctor when I was a little, and I know it would have taken more than a cute book to make me less anxious about heading off to the clinic without a fight, but The Get Well Soon Book by Kes Gray and Mary McQuillan might have made me feel a little better about my situation. These pages are filled with different animals who have suffered injuries of some sort or another - a mole who burrowed right into a brick wall, a dragon who burned herself with a sneeze, a turtle who got stepped on by an elephant, a hamster who got his whiskers caught in his wheel, etc. None of them look very happy, which is perfectly understandable. After a trip to the doctor, though, they're all frolicking around in no time, their pain or sickness gone and forgotten. The Get Well Soon Book is a short book, but any child should get a kick out of the wonderful illustrations - and it just might help a sick or injured child feel a little better for awhile.

A must read for teens (and parents who want their teens to succeed)
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2008-02-21
First mechanics: Getting Real is extremely well written. Dr. Gray weaves together statistics, ideas and research into a well organized, easily read 128 pages.

Secondly material: Sadly, too many teens are making career plans using information that is at least a decade out of date. Getting Real accurately updates readers at warp speed.

Dr. Gray bravely tackles the myth that a university degree is the key to a successful career and that all university degrees lead to high paying jobs. In today's job market, this just isn't so. Dr. Gray shows why success for today's teens will depend as much on creating detailed and achievable post-high school plans as it does on getting good grades. His definitions of career maturity for 10th and 12th grade students are revolutionary.

His ideas will come as a shock to Boomer parents who believe that teens should put off making career decisions as long as possible to keep all options open. Dr. Gray explains in detail why this old advice is bad advice.

The global economy has created a job market is volatile and complex. High school and college teachers have little training about labor market realities or effective career planning techniques. Therefore, successful transition from school to work is an individual responsibility. Getting Real provides teens the guidance they need to create sound strategies for building their first career paths.

Ken Gray has dared to challenge what we all have come to believe to be the "right" path for a student to follow after high school. The truth is that times have changed and the path to success no longer follows the same pattern it once did. I highly recommend this book for anyone who works in close contact with high school students. Many students go to college because they feel it's the only option... then drop out because it isn't for them. Ken Gray's book points to another option for helping these students to succeed.

Best Anglo-Boer War book I've ever read
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2003-12-12
This book is definitely the best book that I have ever read on the subject of the Anglo-Boer War of 1899-1902! The author of this book goes to great lengths to give the reader a feeling for the war itself, but goes far beyond just giving an account of the military side of the war. He does an excellent job of putting the war within the context of the British Victoria Era that it closes, and within the context of developments within Europe and around the world. As the war itself evolves, developments at home in England, and around the world are discussed. Plus, each battle is covered separately, being clearly delineated within its own section, with very nice maps included.

I must admit that I was somewhat afraid of this book; it was originally published in 1959, and I was afraid that it might be overly dry. However, to my surprise I found this to be a history book that is both fascinating and highly informative. Also, while some books suffer from a scarcity of maps, that is not the case with this book. Overall I found this to be an excellent book on its subject and an enjoyable read. If you are interested in the Anglo-Boer War, then you must get this book!

Kruger's work is a masterful introduction to this epic war.

Rayne Kruger was born in South Africa and can trace his antecedants to the Kruger family. The book was first published in 1959 and the title is a song sung by British Troops as they left England for Cape Town or Durban to "fight the Boers".

Unlike the Krugers of old, however, Rayne Kruger has a mastery of the English language that few can better.

The combination of his wonderful ability to describe and take the reader away to another time and his considerable efforts at research and analysis has resulted in a book that propels the subject to the reader in compelling, succinct way.

When you finish reading Kruger's work, you want to read more; he awakens a thirst for knowledge and piques one's interest - the hallmark of a successful historical work.

But the triumph of this book goes well beyond the eloquence of the narrative or the presentation of fact. The triumph of this work is that it glides through pivotal facts, personalities and the politics of conflict to ultimately present the reader with an incontovertible fact: that the Boer War is relevant to our condition to-day and its lessons ring like a bell in the night...

Kruger graphically introduces us to the psyche of the end of the Victorian era. It's parralles to the American era are strikingly familiar. The British in South Africa faced their Vietnam. A short war dragged on for three years. Public pressure to end the war grew. From a jingoistic beginning came a clamour to end it all.

Kruger's subtle analysis propels the Boer War forward into this century. The relevance of the Boer War as a precursor to both the politics of imperialism and the devaluation of human life which were such prominent characteristics of life in this century is brought before the reader in quiet slow degrees as one reads on into the book.

It is a book I highly recommend not only for students of the history of that era in Southern Africa, but for all of us who want to try and understand the psychology of the tragic and barbaric century that follo! wed.

In this addition to Baker's Rabbit series, Gray Rabbit is trying to find his favorite book. He can't find it because all of his stuff is messed up. So he sorts through everything arranging his things into piles where they belong. However, in each pile there is one item that is out of place. This oddball leads to Rabbit's next arrangement until finally he has gone through everything and found his book. Kids love Alan Baker's Rabbit books and with the brilliant colors, vivid shapes, and concept lessons that they help teach, parents will enjoy the books as well. Great book for preschool to kindergarten children.

truly captures the era and times. Makes me realize all that my forefathers' sacrificed and why we should fight to preserve the confederate flag so that they are not forgotten. Our heritage has been swept aside by so many who want to rewrite history, and we should not let that happen. This book is many true stories of a brave southern army who fought like no other before or since. southern army who fought against all odds.
