An Excellent book on Dementia and Alzheimers

This book was very helpful and excellent in obtaining an understanding of this very complex disease. It describes why the patient exhibits behavior out of social norms. It also helps the caregiver to better help and understand the patient or family member. I can definately relate having taken on the care of a loved one with this disease for more than five years. I've read many books on the subject but found this one very easy to understand and could relate to it the best from past experience.

A Diamond Gem

Hal Lebovitz was not only a Cleveland (Ohio) sportswriting legend - Cleveland News; The (Cleveland) Plain Dealer, where he was also the sports editor; The News-Herald/The Morning Journal - for more than 60 years, but he was a national treasure with his "Ask Hal the Referee" column which appeared locally and in The Sporting News.

Lebovitz would answer questions from fans concerning (controversial) calls in baseball, basketball and football, based upon his knowledge from working as an official and his appreciation for the rules which govern the games.

This collection captures the baseball Q&A over the many years - Lebovitz covered sports from 1942 until his death in 2005, at age 89 - he wrote this unique column. The staying power itself was impressive, since its popularity gained momentum when newspapers actually mattered and never ebbed in the age of the Internet.

Whether this is a trip down memory lane or simply a search for a diamond gem to add to a sports library, the book is truly timeless and an absolute joy to read.

A fun trivia read and a "must-have" for baseball fans who enjoy being right about their beloved sport.

Ask Hal: Answers to Fans' Most Interesting Questions about Baseball Rules from a Hall-of-Fame Sportswriter is a question-and-answer format guide by dedicated fan Hal Lebovitz, who was inducted into the writers' wing of the Baseball Hall of Fame in 2000. The baseball questions that Hal answers come from Little League, church-league softball, major league games, the World Series, and fans' excited imaginations. A fun trivia read and a "must-have" for baseball fans who enjoy being right about their beloved sport. "Q: Say a batter is running to first base with the bat in both hands and the fielder tagged the bat. Would the runner be safe or out? A: He's out. The bat becomes part of him when he holds it, so it's a legal tag. A batter who carries a bat to first base is batty."

This is THE book to get if you are remotely interested in prayer beads as a form of prayer and/or crafting. As a Rosary Artisan, I found the book to be vital to my craft (and my spirituality) as it reveals the meanings behind the beads from different cultures and religions. The pictures are stunning, the writing is fluid and beautiful, and the instructions/implementations are user friendly.

I highly highly highly recommend this book without any sort of reservation!

Although photos were uncommon back in 1860 this book located dozens of them. The story is told in a vivid and fair portrayal.

After reading several adult books on the Civil War for research, I began this book by Delia Ray (I like to read children's books as well). I simply need to say that this book is excellent. Civil War reading can be very dry, but not this book. Delia Ray takes us on a soldiers journey beginning with enlistment and ending with a soldiers life after the war, using quotes from actual letters and diaries strategically placed throughout the book. She covers such interesting items as what soldiers ate, how they drilled, their various living quarters, what they did for enjoyment, their attitudes toward their commanders, soldiers of other nationalities, and the enemy. She discusses individual battles, medical treatment, hospital and prison life, with such empathy that when you finish this book you will actually feel as if you were there yourself. The photographs in this book each tell a story in themselves, as well. They are some of the most moving photos I've seen of the Civil War. I simply couldn't put this book down onced I picked it up. I highly recommend this book to both children and adults because like my title says, it's not a book... it's a journey. An all inclusive journey that seems to leave no question concerning the Civil War soldiers life unanswered.

In the 25 years since I graduated I never learned as much about the university as I did in reading this book. Burns tells the story of the university in the way of a grandfather. I was enthralled through the entire story. That is unusual for me but I found his story compelling and the scolarship was outstanding. There were sources that were special. His handling of the Erskine affair was delicate at best. I recommend this book to anyone that is interested in the Notre Dame that extends past the football field.

Blood against blood

The classic mini-series from the 80s is even more vivid in print. From the first page the novel clutches the reader's heart and refuses to release it till the final word. That old cliché, " I laughed, I cried" applies so well to this wonderful novel about the great war between the states. The reader will laugh and certainly will cry.

The novel centers on two families, the Geysers and the Hales, bound by blood but divided by geography and ideology. The Virginian Geysers and the Pennsylvanian Hales are cousins but when war breaks out they are bound by pride to take up arms against each other. It's blood against blood in this horrific tale of pain and suffering and war.

John Leekley has produced an epic sure to become a classic. The Blue And The Gray is worthy to stand beside the works of Margarette Mitchel and John Jakes as the very best of Civil War literature. John Leekley's brutal imagery, described with unrelenting passion, brings the horror of that bloody conflict to vivid life.

This is American literature at its finest. Honest, thought provoking, and superbly written, The Blue And The Gray will touch the reaser's heart and reverberate through the reader's mind long after the final page is turned.

Great entertainment value

For someone looking for a more emotional view of the Civil War, with more 'people and feelings' than true history, then this is a very nice read. It is the fictionalised account of the Geyers and the Hales, cousins - one family of the South, the other from the North, that find themselves divided and fighting each other during the War Between the States in the US. The Geyers were farmers, of the land, though were not slave owners, and the story focuses around their eldest son, John, an artist who went into the war as an artist correspondent, torn by his love for both families and seeing both sides of the argument. He hates the institution of Slavery, a hatred amplified by the hanging of his black friend, a freed man for hiding fugitive slaves. The Hales were city-folk. Not only were they divided on their views, but by their styles of life. You see all the various scenes of how families were divided, how the glory of war could turn sour for the many boys simply looking for adventure.

There was a real John Geyser, and he did draw a lot of pictures as his time as a soldier. But he was not a war correspondent, and not that professional of an artists. Still is immature drawing carry a power to convey the horrors of war.

So take the 'history' with a grain of salt and enjoy the 'emotions' of the great conflict that ripped families and friends apart.

This book was basis and 'publicity' version for the CBS television mini-series The Blue and the the Gray, an epic staring the great Stacey Keech and Gregory Peck as Lincoln. This book and the mini series had Bruce Catton as consultant. I also highly recommend this mini-series as giving a human side to the conflict.

This is a wonderful Civil War book told through the eyes of William Daniel Dixon of Savannah, Georgia. It is a fascinating and detailed account of his journey from the coastal battles of the early war to the battle of Atlanta. If you are from the southeastern part of Georgia you will find it especially interesting to read about the battles and encampments around the Savannah area. Dixon recounts his personal exploits as well as his unit's: the Republican Blues. Compared to the fast travel and communications of today it is great to read about a time of letters, trains, telegraphs, long foot marches, and horse back jouneys.

The Blues in Gray is a very readable account of the Republican Blues service in coastal Georgia with exciting battles taking place on the Ogeechee River at Fort McAllister south of Savannah, Georgia. William Daniel Dixon was 23 when he began his private journal which he kept throughout his Confederate Service. He was a native of Savannah and lived his entire life there. The editor, Roger Durham, has done an excellent job making Dixon's voice heard. I am Dixon's great granddaugher and am delighted that this primary material is available to readers and scholars.

Great for the CEO and CIO

Breakthrough IT captures the essence of what your IT organization should be doing. The first few chapters break down the operating modes of most IT organizations, allowing the reader to identify their starting point, and contrast that with the author's concept of what IT should look like. The remaining chapters provide a fairly detailed "blueprint" of how to migrate towards this new IT organization. What I liked about this book is that unlike many other IT management books, it is not targeted exclusively towards techies. A CEO would be very comfortable reading the book and using to evaluate how their CIO and IT shop are performing, and using the book to trigger discussions and changes in both to make IT a stronger contributor to the company.

A must for managers

Breakthrough IT provides a great template on moving your IT organization from the old way of doing business, to what the author calls "Breakthrough IT." Basically it is an evolution from a cost-focused IT shop that is constantly trying to lower costs, to an IT organization that uses technology and process experience to generate returns. Each chapter builds upon the next, going over the transition to this new way of doing business in a very clear manner.
The book was easy to read, with executive summaries and action points in each chapter, which have proved helpful in discussing its points with peers and figuring out how to apply what I just read. It should prove helpful for C-level people and upper management that are tired of the "old way" of managing IT. I found the interviews with various C-suite exeuctives to be very insightful, and provide some real world examples of organizations that are at various stages of implementing the Breakthrough IT concepts.
