This book grabs you right away and takes you on a journey through time with elements of Civil War history, Voodoo methods, and how it was in the Old South especially Baton Rouge. The body flows freely through the chapters and it ends with a good conclusion. Excellent reading for those interested in Baton Rouge and surrounding area. I hope it is made into a movie.

Great book. I could not put it down. It talks about southern Louisiana history combined with the darkness of the voodoo culture which is still around(somewhat)today.

I had the privilege of reading this book before it was published. It combines the history of south Louisiana with a twist of the dark side. You'll want to go on to the next chapter to learn more about the characters and events. I highly recommend it.

How It Really Was: A Memoir of "The Greatest Generation" by Patricia Hunter Gray is her personal account of her life's adventures, beginning with growing up in a small Indiana town during the Depression era, where her family was as hard-hit by bad times as everywhere else. Patricia enjoyed travel a great deal, going from one end America to the other, and then eventually traveling around the globe. A most thoughtfully written and engaging autobiography, How It Really Was is a truly wonderful account of varied people, events, and places in a restless, yet highly enjoyable lifetime.

What a great thing she did for women when she wrote this book! The things that her kids wrote on the trip through Europe made the book even better. It shows what an independent woman can do with her life.

This straight from the hip shot at life in a small Indiana town is really how it was. I, too, grew up in the town of Morocco, Indiana and even though the author had escaped from its limiting confines by that time, it remained and still remains basically the same. Anyone wanting to sample the flavor of a small mid-western town in the l920s 30s and 40s should put this book on their required reading list. Even though the author continued her exploration of the big, wide, world out there after she left the town, she retains many of the timeless values she learned in her early years. Her continuing desire for greater experiences and wider knowledge of the world and its peoples is something that many of us can appreciate. It is very well written and a joy to read.

My husband and I are dual military, and we're using this book for his current deployment. The book has so many great ideas--things you can do before the parent leaves, while they're gone, and even for when they're coming home. The book is different from others because it actually gives you specific things to do to feel closer, instead of vague ideas that don't do anyone much good. I wish I had this book for my last deployment.

Really well done -- easy to read and full of great ideas. Buy it early if you can, so you'll have the time to employ some of the ideas prior to deployment. There are easy ideas that take little time too. I enjoyed this book and am using many of the ideas inside it.

The first book was great, but this 2nd edition is AWESOME. I,too, wish it was available for my first deployments, but the good thing is that it's out now. As our Platoon KV, I have recommended all my wives go out and purchase this book. It's a lifesaver.

When we're young, one of the worst experiences is having someone else speak for us. This book by Mary Gray allows queer youth to speak from their own perspectives. Not only would I have liked this book as a youth, but I find it useful as an educator of late teens. Give it a try.

I picked up this book at my local library, reading it in the corner, terrified, lest anyone see that I wasinterested in reading about gays. When I did relax enough to read it, I devoured it. I found a part of myself in all of the teenagers in the book.I felt their struggles. I'm living their lives. I cried when I finished the book. I yearn to be comfortable enough to discuss my sexuality the way these teens did. Reading about their fight out of the closet was a cpomfort to me, a bisexual teenager who is not yet all the way out. I recommend this book to students, teachers, and anyone who has to face issues dealing with homosexuality in their everyday lives. I am getting upthe courage to buy a copy so I can have it to keep.

Ms. Gray is a fabulous editor-selecting the most incredible queer youth to represent the community today. As a queer youth, I too would have loved to read something as powerful as this. As a queer teacher, it is a resource for all students to understand the diversity in our state and country. If introduced into the schools, perhaps our schools will become just a little bit safer for ALL students.

I loved this book so much. It was clever and charming and I was chuckling all the way to the end of the book. It was interesting to learn how everyday sayings came into use and the meaning behind them. I can't wait to impress people with the new sayings that I learned as well. I have never enjoyed a pet book as much as I enjoyed this one.I would definitely recommend this author to everyone. I hope that she comes out with more books as fun and witty as this one.

Great Civil War Novel!!!!

Review Date: 2006-07-13
I think that this book is a great representation of the Civil War through the eyes of an average Civil War soldier. The family connections that the author has with the characters in the book is what makes it that much more exhilarating. By the author having close descent and using actual places as well as actual family members in his book, it helps bring authenticity to the book. In todays age we are bombarded with video games and movies based on World War II and so on. It is good to see an author that still takes interest in his ancestry and utilizes that in a book. Great book and would reccommend it to anyone. Not only will you like the love story, but the action that follows.

This IS the best book I've read on my mental prep for Kilimanjaro. Funny at times - a bit of laugh-out-loud toilet humor - but serious about what you experience during summit day. The author is descriptively succinct about the attempt in his short, easy to read publication.

A Friend Helping me to Understand

A friend of mine wanted me to read this book so he let me borrow his version. He plans to go to Africa soon and climb Kilimanjaro and wanted me to know something about the experience. He couldn't have chosen a better book for this purpose. I loved the light humor, but also came away from the reading of this book with a deeper respect for those who are willing to take on this challenge. My comment to my friend was: "I think I would be dead if I tried to hike up that mountain"! The book is short and to the point, humorous, and the perfect book to share with a friend so they can better understand the experience. It's kind of written as though it was taken right out of the man's hiking journal (and probably was) so it's not a study in English grammar, but it was a joy to read. After reading my friend's copy, I came home, went online to Amazon and bought the book so my family could also enjoy it.

I am planning a trip to Kenya, and my friends are pushing me to join them when they hike Mt Kili. I bought all the technical books and felt I still didn't understand if this was right for me. After reading this book I've developed a new respect for individuals who push their limits for the sake of personal desire, not to prove they are tough or adventurous. I also developed a new respect for the term 'comic relief' -- it pointed out how dangerous this can be and in very memorable way prepared me better than a list of required gear. The author has a clever ability to bring humor to the potential dangers of this hike. This is a refreshing and honest funny voice. I enjoyed the book and highly recommend it.

It is written ina distinctly "non-literary"(somewhat awkward, conversational) style thatactually contributes to its charm. The writer delineatesboth the "grunt" work of spiritual and physical healing,as well as some revelationalexperiences. Truly, a rare gem

L of G saved my life. Doctors had given me up for dead. I stopped breathing when near any major electrical outlet or field. This is the only book that mentions that and the only one that deals with the emotional, mental, and spiritual healing . An extraordinary story that gave me hope. And the knowledge in it is astounding and beyond anything I've ever come across. I am now back working after lying like a corpse for nearly two year and have started my own business. Thank you Elizabeth Rose. You are a saint. You're book helped me to discover my true path. Thank you again for your courage in writing this horror story.

A story of struggle and hope

My wife has serious chemical sensitivities. Back in the 1980s when her symptoms appeared, the doctors kept diagnosing her reactions as "psychosomatic" because they did not produce identifiable allergens like regular allergies do. This book, published in 1985, was one of the first proofs we found that A) she was not alone and B) it was not "all in her head."

Elizabeth Rose's story, told in a non-technical, almost journal-like style, chronicles her struggle to identify the chemicals in her home and environment that were causing the allergic reactions, then de-toxify her system enough to recover a reasonably normal life. Much additional research has been done on Environmental Illness and Sick Building Syndrome since this book was first published, but it remains a good read. In addition to practical info on identifying harmful chemical factors, she also shares some of the spiritual side of her healing, such as various dreams that gave her clues about what she needed to do. Most of all, her story offers hope that there is light at the end of the tunnel.

O.K....the Chapter of which Thoreau speaks of love is enought to have and to hold this book. :) Just brilliant and intimate. He speaks of our relationships as "ascending" or "decending". Imagination being more important and sensitive than the heart. If either one is damaged then they both become estranged. When present the object of love expands and grows unending...the best stuff ever!

This is a sweet correspondence between two friends that will enlighten all who read it.

I had not previously delved into any collections of Thoreau's correspondence before reading this book, but had only read the occasional quotes from letters in other works. I was surprised to find such a wealth of ideas--thoughts every bit as beautifully expressed and quotable as any in Thoreau's best books. I immediately began underlining favorite passages and discovered over sixty real gems.

H.G.O. Blake and Thoreau carried on an irregular correspondence over thirteen years starting in 1848, and their relationship changed in that time from student/teacher to friends. Editor Bradley Dean does a wonderful job of thoughtfully introducing the correspondence, of providing background information to give context to each letter, and in offering extensive notes to clarify references. The result is a book every bit as enjoyable to read as Walter Harding's annotated Walden. It gives you an intimate look at the brilliant man who many have thought lacked ordinary human feelings. As Edward O. Wilson wrote for the back cover, "In its spontaneity it is the next best thing to personal conversations with the man himself."

A Gem of a Book!

"Letters to a Spiritual Seeker" by the magnificent Henry David Thoreau is a wonderful and spiritually inspired/inspiring book! I just got it, and it's perfect for dipping into for Thoreau's deep and moving insights. Bradley P. Dean's footnotes are excellent and very helpful, and I am grateful for the effort he has put into making these letters available to us.

One of my favorite and profoundly thought-provoking letters is the one where he speaks about a muskrat's den he found (during his wanderings) in an analogy for understanding how so much "doing" is necessary for arriving at a little bit of "being" in this world. There is something realistic but consoling at the same time in reading that letter. The book is worth getting just for this letter alone!

Although he wrote in the 19th century, many of his deeper ideas are still valid and very spiritually nourishing, and this book makes me want to read Thoreau's other writings.

...from simple observations!. What a great book I stumbled on. Buy this book. Trust me, you won't be disappointed.

The author has gathered a multitude of awe-inspiring real life situations as experienced by children ( a la "out of the mouths of babes.") These are neither too sweet nor sentimental. Instead, the vignettes evoke thoughts and imagery that resonnate easily with anyone looking for inspiration and/or a "higher" vantage point.

Mr. Gray has apparently experienced life's viscissitudes and aims (and Succeeds!!) to share his collected insights as garnered from spontaneous youthfull inguiries and observations.

Buy the book, enjoy the journey and then give it to an appreciative friend.
