I'm a long time reader of Jonah Hex from years ago when it first came out. I was very disappointed with the way the artwork in the Hex series basically ruined a fantastic character and comic series.
I was NOT disappointed by Face Full of Violence. It is 100% pure Jonah Hex all the way and the artwork is great just like the original series was.
Great stories, great artwork and inking, I hope they make a hundred of them because I would buy them all. If you've read any of the original series, this is a must buy.

I remember Hex from the day, this Hex looks a lot like Eastwood...but still has (some of) the spirit of the original HEX. I wish they would bring the old back in a colour compilation.

Once again the team of Justin Gray and Jimmy Palmiotti deliver with the goods. In the wake of western shows like Deadwood taking off DC has brought back probably their most prominent western character Johna Hex.

Now this is where I say something prolific and inspiring to make you want to buy the book. The truth is, it's more then worth it and even if you're not a western fan, like myself, the books still worth it. It had depth, great character moments, and the pretty art you all go crazy for.

Buy it damnit.

Just plain awesome

One of the most underappreciated characters in one of the most underappreciated genres in comics gets resurrected and reinvigorated thanks to the writing tandem of inker Jimmy Palmiotti and Justin Gray. A duo who worked together on a series of holiday-themed Punisher one-shots (none of which were anything if at all to write home about mind you), both writers are firing on all cylinders with Jonah Hex: Face Full of Violence, which collects the first six issues of the revamped series. Instead of focusing on one continuing storyline, Face Full of Violence contains six seperate stories all involving our favorite scarred outlaw, as he pursues kidnappers, has run-ins with those from his past, and generally takes on all comers without blinking an eye. The stories themselves are gritty and violent without going over the top in terms of gore and profanity (this isn't a Vertigo title, it's under the DC banner), but it retains plenty of attitude and a mature tone that isn't seen in mainstream comics too often these days. The art by Luke Ross and original Jonah Hex artist Tony Dezuniga is nothing short of great, making an already sweet package even, well, sweeter. All in all, if you dig old western comics or have fond memories of a man named Hex, this is a must own.

A trade that stands out from the rest

In a comic medium of decompressed stories and multi-part crossovers, Jonah Hex completely exposes an old school tradition by crafting clever, witty and meaningful stories in stand alone issues. Justin Gray, Jimmy Palmiotti and Luke Ross are able to take a classic DC character, in a under appreciated genre, and captivate the audience. This collection offers readers a little taste of what the monthly title has been able to deliver on a monthly basis. Very happy that I've been getting the monthly title but this trade will sit on the bookshelf with some of my other titles.

This book is a labor of love and committment, the author rocks and provides insights into what it takes to assure that today's actions ensure one's goals/ideals, i.e. wolf recovery, survive into the next generation. The illustrations are sweet and the book is very easy to read and enjoyable.

I grew up in Wisconsin and can relate to Richard P Thiel's accurate and colorful descriptions of northern and central Wisconsin landscape. However, his experiences go far beyond those of most others, helped by being able to track wolves by light aircraft and radio telemetry thus getting a bird's eye view of the scene. A good example of the Scientific Method on the hoof, so to speak. The book does not glamorize the profession of wildlife biology; it tells it like it is, including the governmental bureaucracy, physical hardships, bad weather, and long hours, occasionally punctuated with incredible encounters with the wolves that refused to be excluded from Wisconsin. The book teaches people what to expect when wolves share your living space. And what a great ending ... it brings the reader right up to date and sets the stage for proper management decisions in the future. A great humorous book which will entertain you as well as educate. I couldn't put it down.

Good friends presented us this book as a Christmas gift, knowing that we are very interested in all forms of appearance of the nature, inanimate and alive.
It is of great interest for us since just in this years the wolves also return to the forests of our Eastgerman country.
It is wonderful written, understandable also for the laymen and rich in nice figures.
Most important for us is however, that this book is written by a man who obviously feels responsible for the life on our so endangered earth, who understand that human life is tightly connected with all the other appearances of life and that the good evolution of one kind of life is the necessary precondition for the healthy existence of all another creatures.
Men like Richard Thiel give us the hope that life has a chance to survive at our planet.

Thiel's wolves a winner again.

'Keepers of the wolves' is Richard P Thiel's follow up to his
wonderful 1993 publication 'The Timber Wolf in Wisconsin.'
Once again the author's informative and personal writing style
makes this very fine book an essential work for any Wolf supporter interested in the more complex aspects of the Wolf recovery effort in the United states today.

Keepers Of The Wolves: The Early Years Of Wolf Recovery In Wisconsin by Richard Thiel (coordinator of the Wisconsin Department of natural Resources Sandhill Outdoor Skills Center, Babcock, Wisconsin) is the true and fascinating story of the restoration of wild wolves to Wisconsin Forest, from 1978 when they had been gone for twenty years to the present day with an estimated 200 timber wolves in 54 packs. Black-and-white line drawings illustrate a story of political controversies, environmental struggles, and the enduring strength of the wolf itself. A conservationist success story, Keepers Of The Wolves is especially recommended for Wisconsin environmental issues reading lists and wildlife restoration studies reference collections.

I read this book when it first came out, then again a couple years ago. I love anything I can get my hands on, on the subject of the Civil War. After I read a story, I want to visit the area. There are so many emotions we still carry over that war, proud that we could come back together, but a sadness at the cost of life it took. This is a book that will have you doing a lot of thinking about life.....

This is a great novel. Recently an old REAL plantation, known as the 'Fairview' Farm was purchased and is now being developed with expcnsive homes and the title the develepment is 'The Last Plantation'. It is located just South-West of Gallatin, TN. We need to have this novel republished and the author, Mr. Wright, is presently the Mayor of Gallatin. This old plantation, Fairview Farm, is not the one Mr Wright writes of (I think) but it really existed and still does. My mother and grandfather worked on this farm in the 1910-1920 period. Thank you. (I wish I had a hundred copies of it) (I have one on order and will try to have Mr Wright autograph and send to my sister in Shawnee Mission KS) If this can be reprinted it is more than twice the price shown.

I own and have read, highlighted and reread the original Hypnotherapy Handbook. The pages are tattered because the concepts keep displaying deeper levels of understanding each time I read it.
Wow, despite that, I have gleamed even more insights from reading this one.
As I said above, if you want to really help people, buy and study this book.

As an Instructor of Hypnosis, I not only read this wonderful book, but it is also on my required reading list for my college students. Never before have I seen such a comprehensive text written on hypnotherapeutic practices that is so well written even one with no knowledge of Hypnotherapy can relate to it as well as understand the techniques. Hogan should be proud to accept his position beside such modern Hypnosis greats as such as Rossi, Cheek, and Erickson among others. The Time Track piece is simply amazing.

The New Hypnotherapy Handbook was one of my textbooks for Kevin Hogan's hypnosis certification training. I particularly liked this book because it offers a model of hypnotherapy, a number of useful scripts, and solutions to dealing with difficult problems in hypnosis.

First, the model. CARPETS is Hogan's anacronym for Case Analysis, Regression, Parts/Ego State, Time Track Therapy and Suggestive Therapeutics. The highlight of the model is the Time Track Component. Never have I seen such a beautiful piece of work in the field of hypnosis. What you learn is how to weave a clients past and future positive resources into their present day state of mind. This modality alone is worth the ... price of the book.

The discussion of ethical issues, case analysis and legal issues is first rate. The details of regression are sketchy at first but made clear later in the book when his co-authors give verbatim transcripts of their session work. The ego state therapy is better described in Ego States by Watkins, but the treatment is sufficient. The specialty chapters on Emergency Hypnosis, Past Life Regression and even UFO abductions are tantalizing and always prefaced with cautions of ethical use and careful handling of the client.

This book started off a bit clumsily and then by Chapter Two it was clear it was one of the finest books on hypnosis I have read.

The New Hypnotherapy Handbook is a wonderful book for the advanced beginner and the seasoned practitioner.

I recommended this book for a new hypnotist who recently joined my staff. She expressed feeling overwhelmed with all her new found knowledge and unsure of the theory behind some techniques.
This handbook covers a wide spectrum of techniques explained in concise and "user-friendly" templates and knew this was just the book she needed to pull together all her knowledge.
The part I found particularly useful was on Time Tack Therapy. I've learned it from other instructors, but never before had this therapy made as much sense as explained in this book
Definitely a must have for all new and experienced hypnotists or for anyone wanting to explore the mind body connection

With the growing interest in alternative - complementary therapies, hypnotherapy is increasingly being recognized as a compelling choice. Kevin Hogan is an important voice in defining methods which are respectful of the client, highly ethical, and effective. His voice is credible because of his own ethics and practice and the effectiveness of his work. It was my privilege to edit The New Hypnotherapy Handbook and to train with him in Minneapolis. I have the deepest respect for his knowledge and wisdom and the efforts he has made to develop and establish hypnotherapy as a viable, trustworthy intervention. It's an excellent resource!

This book is amazing. The writing is different from anything else out there. The plot is excellent, the dialogue is clever and charming and frequently funny, the characters complex. It's a sad comment on our times that even thrillers centering around serial killers don't give us a chill anymore. So to evoke the slightest ghost of a horrifed shudder, more and more authors are turning to crimes against children - where they will turn when even these fail to appall us? I gave Gray's first Whitty novel, The Fiend in Human, five stars and likened it to a cross between Dickens and Spillane. This sequel is still plenty good, but it didn't have quite as much bite. The previous book's most vivid parts lay in its descriptions of one of 1852 London's most formidable slums. It's difficult to elicit as much color from a Victorian nobleman's country estate, no matter how depraved its residents may be, as this tale tries to do. The Lewis Carroll and "Alice" analogy here is appealing. Too, Gray shows the same solid command of Victorian diction and cadences of speech (which can be so awful when other authors do them badly). Highly recommended.

Review Date: 2006-02-13
Edmund Whitty, A London newspaper correspondent who can usually be counted upon for crisp and lurid copy, has fallen on lean times. After his triumphant expose of a notorious serial killer, he has inexplicably lost his knack for sensational reporting. Broke and desperate, he seizes upon a generous offer from a mysterious American to discredit a quack psychic. But how, he ends up wondering uneasily, does the psychic know so much about a scandal involving Whitty's late brother?

When the psychic is brutally murdered, Whitty finds himself accused of the crime and thrown into Milbank prison, the most bizarre institution of its kind in England. Help comes unexpectedly from "the Captain," a gangster not known for charity work. To save his own skin, Whitty must find the men responsible for the disappearance of the Capatin's young niece, Eliza.

Whitty's search takes him to Oxford, where he meets the brillant and eccentric Reverend William Boltbyn, a renowned children's author who delights in playing croquet, devising elaborate stories, and taking artistic photographs of little girls. There he uncovers a looking-glass world, the dark side of Victoriana, and the murder of innocence.

John MacLachlan Gray, who evoked "the mean streets and byways of 1852 London with a skill worthy of Dickens"[Publisher's Weekly] in The Fiend in Human, spins an even more irresistible tale of dark secrets behind the facade of Victorian respectability.

If the highest praise you can give a book is that it leaves you wanting to read more, then White Stone Day deserves top accolades. It has just about everything you need in a novel: a gripping plot, a strong sense of time and place that nonetheless doesn't overwhelm the proceedings, a sure narrative drive, a diverse and well-drawn supporting cast of characters, and perhaps most important, an intriguing and entertaining protagonist. White Stone Day would have been a very good book with any other main character; with cynical, dissolute, at times hapless Edmund Whitty as the protagonist, it's a great book--perhaps even more satisfying than The Fiend in Human, to which this book is a sequel.

Victorian newspaperman embroiled with ghosts and kidnappers

Review Date: 2005-11-30
Gray plots his second excellent Victorian literary thriller around two activities that were all the rage in mid-19th century England: photography and spiritualism.

Edmund Whitty, the earthy London newspaper writer and man of excess, first seen in "The Fiend in Human," has fallen on hard times. All his best ideas are being uncannily scooped by a rival correspondent and he's in "fearsome debt" to the Captain, a London crime boss, "the result of a wager in the sport of ratting, with compound interest growing like a tumour and default a mathematical certainty."

Approached by an American Pinkerton agent to expose a fraudulent psychic, Whitty seizes the opportunity, but the séance does not go according to plan. His brother David, who died in a rowing accident at Oxford, appears, plaintively proclaiming, "I did not live as you think I lived! I did not die as you think I died!"

Meanwhile, in Oxfordshire, Rev. William L. Boltbyn, based loosely on Lewis Carroll, is singularly enchanted by the Lambert sisters, particularly Emma, who is on the cusp of womanhood, a fact Boltbyn bitterly bemoans. He whiles away hours telling the girls tales and taking pictures of them in various romantic and classical poses, some suggestive.

Before it's over Whitty will be accused of murder and cast into the bowels of Millbank prison, only to acquire a new commission - the breaking of a child pornography ring which may involve both his dead brother and the abducted young sister of the distraught Captain, a girl bearing a strong resemblance to Emma Lambert.

Other viewpoints include a comically psychopathic pair of thugs for hire and the daring, foolhardy Lambert sisters keen on ferreting out the sinister secrets of the local Duke. Steeped in Victorian sensibilities of romance, propriety and the gulf between the classes, redolent with London's stewpots and taverns and bustling streets, Gray's witty, suspenseful story builds to a tense and satisfying climax.

As an outdoorsman and retired Ranger, I have read several books about Gamewardens. I wholeheartedly recommend this book. Sgt. Hethcox portrays the humor and hardships a Ranger experiences while performing his/her duties. It was easy to identify some of the characters even with the name changes. Is Sgt. BIGGERS who I think he is? It also brought back my memories of similar cases that I came in contact with during my career with Georgia Game and Fish. Having worked my first and last days with him, Honor describes the author and MOST that wear the Green and Grey. Thanks Jim, for taking the time to put it on paper.

This B&B guild is among the best on the market and definitely the most complete of this region. Ms. Larson prefaces each section with her special commentaries about the specific areas and her grasp of the area is immediately evident. Her warm personality matches the character of the B&Bs she describes. For anyone venturing into the historic nooks of the region this is the guide to have. This thoroughly researched and well-written book held special meaning for me, one of the last generation from the segregated South who entered a movie theater through the "colored" entrance and sat in the balcony, and who spent four years at Duke U. during the early '70's. The presence of the Klan in my small North Carolina town was always known but hidden, and this book provided insight into why poor whites find membership in the Klan and its philosophies so attractive and how the white elite was secretly complicit in its support of the Klan. This book introduced me to Hayti, the section of Durham where low-income African-Americans live. Despite my four years at Duke, I'd never heard of this neighborhood, and the story of Hayti resident Ann Atwater's activism to improve conditions for poor blacks and whites in Durham is amazing. Duke U. is a very insular campus, and town-gown relations between the school and Durham have historically been tense. I'm very glad that this book exists for incoming freshmen to read; to spend four years on a campus and have no knowledge of the town surrounding the campus (as I did not have) is shameful.
A very valuable insight in this book is the author's understanding of the strange dynamics of class, which exists throughout the South but is seldom mentioned. Blaming African-Americans for their economic woes, and receiving secret support from the white elite, has historically distracted poor whites from the reality that it is this white elite, with its power and money, that keeps poor whites economically down-trodden.
Although I was in Durham slightly later than the years during which the events of the book take place, I had some familiarity with many of the key players (Howard Fuller, Floyd McKissick, Asa Spaulding), and the book exhaustively discusses the roles of everyone involved in this tumultuous time in Durham. It reads like riveting fiction, and the evolution of the relationship between C.P. Ellis and Ann Atwater is a wonderful story.

A well-written, scrupuosly researched important book.

As someone who works for parity in this society, I look for materials that show clearly that poor white people have more in common with blacks and other ethnic/racial peoples than they do with the power structure that oppresses us all. This book clearly and beautifully illustrates that point.

It has always mystified me that more poor "white" men, in particularly, fail to see this. Every young white man who blames blacks for his inability to get a decent job, the meagerness of his life, or whatever, should read this book. Every petty racist should read the story of C.P. Ellis and Ann Atwater and learn something about the real problems, not the cheap shot racist answers that many of us come to too readily in this society.

I've purchased five copies for myself and friends. A great book to give that relative, co-worker or acquaintance who persists in making racist comments and blaming blacks for the problems in this society.

This book has been out of print for some time, but thankfully the University of North Carolina Press has resurrected it. Duke University's incoming Freshman class has been assigned to read this book as their compulsory summer reading assignment. The Class of 2011 will then discuss this book during Freshman Orientation Week. The selection of this book as the summer reading assignment is timely with the upheavals in Durham and at Duke during the so called "Duke Lacrosse Scandal."

It is interesting to note that Durham held on to Jim Crow laws and was very slow to integrate public schools compared with some high profile Southern cities. When forced to comply with court-ordered integration, the school district took the unusual step of pairing a long-time black activist and a ranking member of the Ku Klux Klan to lead a committee whose purpose it was to deal with the issues surrounding integration. It seems like this would be a disaster, but surprisingly it was far from it.

I should note that this is not some dry recitation of the past. The story reads much more like a novel. I couldn't put in down and found myself quite moved by the story.

This is a truly poignant book that demonstrates how much we have in common with people of other races, creeds or colors and how, by finding common ground, we can move ahead in our society. There are lessons here for us in the new millennium.

For those interested in an excellent book dealing with similar issues, I recommend Blood Done Sign My Name: A True Story

An extraordinary book, not for its writing or ideas, but for the *very idea of it!* How could this have happened, and how could the book tell the story like this??? As a feminist I'm challenging the assumptions of white males who think they are in touch with African Americans, or with feminism. As a white Woman, I feel for the experiences of Black Women, and am sickened by the way white males mostly just don't get it. This is such a strange book you will be blinking hard for sometime afterward.

I bought this book, because my 4 year old son and I borrowed it from the library. Ever since then all he wanted to read was "Billy's Bucket". We were constantly checking this book out until I found it here at Amazon. This is one of my son's favorite books. The basis and understanding with imagination is absolutely wonderful. I would recommend this book to anyone.

This is an easy story to read, and it's great for two-year-olds. Very creative, "outside the box" book.

I am a substitute teacher and I take this book with me every time I sub. This book belongs to my five year old son and he loves to have this book read to him, but I steal it and take it when I work. I have read it to students of all ages and it is always a hit. I use it for a reward or just sometimes to relax and listen to a good story. I found it interesting that Fifth graders like this story as much as Kindergartners. I would recommend this book to anyone who likes to read to kids.

I love stories that show a child how to be imaginitive and this one does. Billy sees the most amazing things in his bucket. My son (3) loved this one right off the bat. My only negative, the ending seems a bit disjointed. Everything is flowing along well, and then BAM ending. There's no intro or explanation to the ending, I always find myself explaining what happened to my son. It's just not quite clear. Fun art.

I am a public librarian and do, at a minimum, three storytimes a week for preschoolers. This week that amounted to about 80 children and they LOVED Billy's Bucket!! It was so much fun to read and the kids loved that the dad was the one who was in trouble because he didn't listed to Billy. What a hoot!

Good introduction to Christian Virtue.

This books is a good introduction to the four cardinal virtues and the theological virtues. It uses the Catechism of the Catholic Church and personal experience to show how important developing virtues (habits for doing what is good with ease, promptness, and joy) to live a happy and successful life. The section on the theological virtues is good (supernatural habits which bring us into union with God). I highly recommend this book.

Gray writes, "Today it is more common to hear about values than virtues. Current thought is that society would be safe, healthy, and happy, if only we could instill proper values into people. Values-based moral education programs exemplify the modern conviction that morality is nothing other than the art of making good choices, where we are guided entirely by one's own values. One could critique this approach to morality on philosophical grounds, but my criticism is simple and to the point. The problem is that values fall short when it comes to making men moral. Having good values is a fine thing, but the battle of morality is not so much about *knowing* what is right as it is *doing* what is right. The difference between wanting to do the good and actually doing it is tremendous. Thus, many men who commit adultery know what they are doing is wrong (no need for clarification), but they are unfaitful despite their values."

From this starting point, Gray walks through the cardinal and theological virtues (with his typical scriptural focus), explaining how we must acquire, exercise, and grow each of them. He reviews the challenges, and offers advice on overcoming them. This is a nice alternative to the pop-psychology that passes as Christian self-help in the bookstores, and has the added benefit of being rather inspiring. Chapters are followed by group discussion questions. Highly Recommended. 119pp.

This is great on audiotape too. The most down to earth, sensible, practical book on the subject. A vital necessity to growing in common sense and wisdom. How does one exercise prudence? justice? charity? While every father needs this book or tape, every mom will benefit from reading and listening over dad's shoulders. It is a treasure chest that you will refer to often so don't hide it from yourself and consider this as a simple, yet significant way to improve your corner of the world: give copies to those you love and know. We've received abundant praises for this and when lending it out, found that it was lent out to another family and another. We ended up buying 2 copies due to the late return.

As a book for our Men's Group the book is very helpful to teach us what virtues are to be about. The implemenation of the scripture and catechesis are powerful and I can't say enough good things about this small study book. Thank you and God Bless.
