I have an advanced degree in nonprofit management and several years of experience in grant writing. This is the book that is an invaluable tool to me even this far into my efforts. I see it as indispensable for a beginner. An essential classic for anyone taking on the formidable task of grant writing.

Three years later, I still return to this book

I purchased this book to guide me through my first grantwriting position in the winter of 2002, and I still return to it today. The sample letters are valuable, and I have successfully modified them to meet the needs of three different organizations. The filing systems make managing a huge amount of information easy. I always recommed this book to people looking to get started with grant writing, and have sung its praises at several workshops I have conducted for beginning grantwriters.

A systematic approach to grants ... and a good read, too

This book presents a systematic approach that begins with identifying your internal needs and moves through the process of research, proposal development, and outreach to funders. Myths are addressed along the way; for example, grants are not "something for nothing," but rather "rational deals between colleagues." A good read filled with specific, hands-on advice.

Absolutely THE BEST book on grant writing EVER!

The are many books on grant writing, and most of these purport to make the process `easy' or `simple' but no other book that I've discovered presents such a clear, organized method for all level of grant writers.

Whether you're just starting out or you're already entrenched in this essential task for all nonprofits, Demystifying Grant Seeking: What You REALLY Need to Do to Get Grants tells you precisely how to be effective.

The authors present a concise technique to search for grants, gather necessary information, and finally compose proposals that actually win awards.

I've used the system for The Claflin Hill Symphony Orchestra, www.claflinhill.org , a cultural organization that I've personally seen grown from burgeoning to thriving in just a few years. With the authors' process, I've pinpointed granters, both business and philanthropic, made initial contact, developed relationships, garnered key points, and submitted successful grants.

Demystifying Grant Seeking: What You REALLY Need to Do to Get Grants is always on my book shelf, except when I'm referring to its procedures or showing it to rising grant seekers.

I am new to the grant writing field. I started my education by reading this book. I found it very informative, but easy to follow. The book is not only theoretical, but offers a great deal of "hands on" advice, including sample forms, grants, etc. The writing style was straighforward and professional. I found the book to be an excellent way to start gaining a practical understanding of this field.

I attended a live performance of "Songs from the Mountain" at E-town in Boulder which was excellent and caused me to read some books about mountain life. This one, in particular, caught my eye and my interest. It is extremely well-written, heartfelt and endearing. I recommend it most highly!

I'm a teacher so this book spoke to me. Miss Sinclair captured my heart in more ways than one. She addressed serious subjects in a way that made them more than believable without being patronizing. If anyone cares about social issues and positive outcomes, this is a book they should read. Plus, the author's style flows. In fact, I wanted to stop reading but I couldn't. So I stayed up all nioht and loved the book. A great story. I wish my name was Eve!I can't wait to read her new book, Angel Flight. Can I get it at amazon.com? Please let me know and thanks.

I met the author at a bookstore in Panama City last year and got her book for my wife. Ms. Sinclair was both charming and gracious and she helped me with her encouraging words about my career change. I could tell she was a woman with a heart and according to my wife, Ms. Sinclair's compassion came through this book about life in the Kentucky mountains. Last week I finally made the time to read "Grant Denied" and I enjoyed the story and the characters. It's entertaining, well written and meaningful to all and I recommend it highly to other readers. This is the sort of book my wife and I wish would make it to Oprah's Book Club.

Grant and Olinger write beautifully. They play off of one another in a way that is sparklingly easy and fun to read. It was a great deal like reading the transcript from a good comedy in some sections. I liked the book very much and felt as though I was saying goodbye to two new friends I'd grown very fond of when it ended. WRITE US A SEQUEL GUYS!

At first, I thought that He Mail/She Mail would be about the conflicts between the genders, but I was very wrong. Instead, it is a delightful and insightful book about the benefits of "anonymous" communication on the Internet where feelings and thoughts can be stated and expressed w/o anxiety.

A terrific and entertaining book for when you are in the mood for "light" reading. The ultimate book for reading by the pool.

I received this book as a gift from an employee for Christmas this year. It arrived two days before the holiday and I'd finished it by Christmas night. I had a really hard time putting it down. I find myself wondering if the two writers still converse, if they've ever met in real life, and if they plan to do more together. It was like eavesdropping with permission, or having a terrific dinner conversation with two old friends. I loved the book and love the fact that the money from its purchase went to charity.

The authors of delightful dialogue have captured the spirit of late night conversations with old or new found friends. The slightly irreverent tone of some of the discussion is just the kind of atmosphere that adds to a sense of spontaneity. As a Christian pastor I found the religious sensibilities of the authors a bit unconventional, but refreshing. Grant and Olinger reflect a concern for the real issues of faith while avoiding the trap of doctrinal boredom. He Mail/She Mail is an invitation to laughter and an invitation to a gathering of friends. Thanks for the fun.

An entertaining and amusing read, that is hard to put down.

A book that is based on conversations on E-Mail between a man and a woman. I thought that this would be the usual man vs. woman; sexist vs. feminist...WRONG! This witty and refreshing book is totally unique. I became engrossed and fascinated by both Elliot and Raven. It is really the story of two people who are openly sharing their very different backrounds with each other, through their entertaining anecdotes of family and childhood. It was impossible to put down.

A first-class trio has come together to create the latest and greatest on the big green monster that is Mavericks. The format here is a collection of intimate perspectives by an ensemble of the knights-errant who have made it their business to ride these coldwater giants. The book is nicely split between the paddlers and the tow-surfers, with narratives collected by editors Bruce Jenkins (sports communist for the San Francisco Chronicle and author of The North Shore Chronicles) and Grant Washburn (surfer and documentary filmmaker) that paint a full, satisfying, and pretty scary picture of what goes in this marine no-man's land formerly known as Jeff Clark's private playground.
Contributors to this volume include Surfing mag editor and big-wave hound dog Evan Slater, paddle-surf advocate Dr. Mark Renneker, and a host of other giant killers including Josh Loya, Zach Wormhoudt, Peter Mel, Kenny Collins, Shawn Rhodes, and still more hugely talented riders, all of whom know how to spin a good yarn.
In addition to his editing duties, Jenkins offers up a trio of quality profiles and a neat piece on "going left" at this predominantly right-hander. For his part, coeditor Washburn, himself one of the great Mavs surfers, contributes an excellent reflective essay on the historic death of Mark Foo here in 1994.
But for me the big story in this book is the tremendous portfolio of legendary Bay Area shooter Doug Acton, who's been chronicling the Mavericks scene since the early 1990s. Acton has captured it all - from the biggest swells and the gapingest pits to nervous pre-session huddles and crux moments to the serene overviews and majestic lineups. With action shots bolstered by lots of images reflecting the mix of local and international camaraderie and lifestyle in and around this Half Moon Bay, California, phenomenon, this is beautifully-paced the book of classic proportions.

"Are you KIDDING ME???"

Those are usually the first words out of anyone's mouth when they see this book on my coffee table. And then, usually I have to throw in "Riding Giants" and change any conversation we may have been having.

The photography and story telling present by Grant and team in top notch. Grant alone has spent more than a decade chronicling the history of the world's heaviest big wave, and it comes through in an amazing presentation that anyone who could possible comprehend what these guys do will appreciate.

But then again, comprehending just exactly what these guys are doing is pretty much impossible.

The other reviewers have already written about how great the illustrations are in this book, about the author's ability to clearly explain some fairly difficult tasks, and about the author's Battlebots record. They're right on all counts, and this is an excellent book.

Chapter 4: Selecting Materials.
Chapter 5: Cutting Metal.
Chapter 6: Shaping and Finishing Metal.

Chapter 9: Selecting Drive Motors.
Chapter 10: Mechanical Building Blocks.
Chapter 11:Working with Roller Chain and Sprockets.
Chapter 12: Let's Get Rolling.
Chapter 13: Choosing Your Control System.
Chapter 14: Choosing Speed Controls.
Chapter 15: Choosing Batteries.
Chapter 16:Wiring the Electrical System.

Make a new stereotype?
Helpful Votes: 11 out of 12 total.
Review Date: 2004-08-20
The field of robotics has split into two camps. One is the "serious" high end domain of industrial labs and academia. The other is that of the solo tinkerer. It is to the latter (you?) that the author dedicates this book, about the subgenre of combat robotics.

Imahara brings together the necessary knowledge of mechanical and electrical systems needed to make such a device. Mundane but important talents like cutting metal safely. And the integration and testing of a complete system. Nothing theoretical here. He writes from wide, practical experience, and appeals to a hands-on ethos in you.

Probably by far the most gripping section is where he describes the different types of combat robots. Thawker, spinner, launcher, hammer, crusher... This field has matured enough to create these now classic stereotypes. Your objective is to build one of these, or, dare you imagine it, be responsible for creating an entirely new stereotype.

I knew of the author from watching BattleBots on TV (he built Deadblow http://www.battlebots.com/battlebots_detail.asp?ID=60) so I pre-ordered this before it even came out.

The thing that sets this one apart from some of the other books is the illustrations - they are absolutely beautiful, and really add to the clarity and readability of the book, although I wish they were in color.

Regardless, this is a brilliant book on robotics. I imagine this is a great place to start if you are just getting into robots, and if you are like me and know some basics after building a few kits, this is a great guide to doing it all from scratch. It provides a great deal of detail, and I'll bet that even veterans are sure to pick up a few tricks here and there.

This book is one of the best I have bought so far. Those of you just getting started on building robot will be especially pleased about the countless tips on the correct way to use tools and construction techniques etc. The huge number of illustrations is a welcomed bonus.

The section on choosing a Remote Control is very informative.

If you are hoping for sections on electronics, programming or building your own parts for the electrical/electronic components you will be very dissapointed as all the parts used are off the shelf.

You might want to supplement this book with Amphibionics and Insectronics by Karl Williams which has good sections of programming and electronics.

No book is perfect but if you want to build a REAL fighting robot this is the best book around and I'm saying this after having bought most of the popular ones around.

And if you can get it in the original hardcover, with that simple and wonderful illustration, all the better. There's no need for any fancy-schmancy. This is also the perfect gift for an eleven-year old, as the heroine is exactly that age.

I found this book to be well written and interesting. The author obviously is a good writer with lots of experience. His writing style is refreshing, and easily read and understood. I did not learn much about the main characters, Grant and Forrest that I did not already know therefore this book might be more useful for the novice student of the civil war than to the hard core enthusiast who has read extensively on the subject. I would buy Jack Hurt's other book on N. B. Forrest to read just because this one was so well written.

Readable but Questionable

Review Date: 2007-08-22
I want to like this book much more than I do! Jack Hurst is an excellent writer. The portraits of the participants are skillful and incisive. The descriptions of battles capture the ebb and flow of the action and the reader is able to follow with few problems. He presents a number of ideas that are very interesting, logical and thought provoking. All of this makes for an enjoyable informative read covering the Civil War in the West from Belmont to the fall of Nashville. In addition, most of his views on the major players are the same as mine, allowing me to applaud as he skillfully skewers Halleck and Buell.

Why isn't this a five-star book review and why can't I be more complementary? I feel this book has a number of problems, none of which invalidate it but taken together diminish the value.

The idea of putting Grant and Forrest together in 1862 makes little sense. Forrest, in 1862, is not that important a person to link with Grant. Yes, they are both determined and both fighter but that does not qualify them for equal billing. The book seems to agree being almost all Grant with a few Forrest chapters. Only about two of the Forrest chapters are required for the story, I felt the rest were more marketing than history.

The idea of a desperate Grant, who may or may not be fighting demon rum, is the story line. Hurst has bought into the Longacre idea that Grant was fighting a serious drinking problem, in spite of the fact that history cannot fully support this idea. The author adds desperation, making Grant's actions as much fear of going back to being a clerk as a drive to win the war.

Maps are another problem. Most of them are two-page maps with the page split in the action being illustrated. No map has contour lines a major consideration at a number of points. The maps are not badly placed but the page split and selection is not helpful either.

I found footnotes to be a major problem. The author uses direct quotes without a footnote to support it. In once case, I think the quote was made in 1863 at Vicksburg not at the time implied. Additionally, one footnote may be for a paragraph that needs multiple footnotes. A couple of his better ideas are not footnoted at all.

Contradictions; the author reverses himself at least once on a major point. This was one of the ideas he presented, w/o footnotes, about 150 pages later, he states the opposite position.

Halleck was not the most honest of men. The author clearly dislikes him and goes out of his way to point out his failings. During this time, Halleck was trying to remove Grant while saying that he was protecting him. This is well documented but some of the book's statements need footnotes and better documentation. I have the same complaint for statements made about Buell.

I did not find any major errors in the book. I do feel that the author's emphasis some items is questionable and needs better documentation. Overall, this is a very readable history of the War in the West from Belmont to the fall of Nashville. I rate this 3 ½ stars that round up to four stars.

The value of "Men of Fire" to those interested in the Civil War !

"Men of Fire" was everything that it was obviously supposed to be : a detailed account of the actions of two great leaders of the Civil War , one for the North & one for the South , during their first major Battle ,early in the Civil War and each being "basically untried & unknown" ! Of course I'm talking about the two principles of the book , U. S. Grant and Nathan Bedford Forrest !

This book accomplishes this main task , very , very well ! It gives "background material" on both great men , that I had never read before ! It really brought these two "legends & heros" into very clear view ! It shows , in this very early battle , thier motivations , their courage , their basic tactics , their vision , their learership , their greatness , their energy , their strengths , their disgusts with the folly & fools around them !

What it did in addition , that I thought most outstanding , was the clear way that it showed the "disorganization , the in-fighting , the jelousey , the politics , the poor planning , the lack of vision" of both sides in this vast conflict , shown so clearly , esp. at the very top of the leadership ladders !

Because of this clear evidence of the "truly medocore and untalented and stupid" majority of politically modivated leaders on both sides and especially at this very significant , early battle ; U.S. Grant and Nathan Bedford Forrest emerge as giants ,as noble warriors ,as dedicated leaders ,who are focused on only one thing : Victory for their cause ! They know what is at stake for their sides and they go at the truly terrible endeavor of a war ,that has been committed to take place , with one unyielding purpose : To achieve absolute victory , at all costs !

This was a great book , about two great men , deeply involved in a most horrible conflict !

I rate this book 5 stars and recommend it highly to both novice and advance numerologists. I was particulary impressed with Chapter 23 on world events. Particularly the century cycle, major cycle and directive cycle. I personally found it very enlightening.

Her knowledge concerning the meaning of the essence shown on the table of events was on the money! I was amazed at the periodicity that it was able to show in the charts that I worked with.. Truly fantastic...

This book is full of meat. Well written, for the most part, one can spend days exploring just one's own information. Proper cautions are given, and instant results are easily had. I am very impressed. You can buy other numerology books that may give slightly different readings, but this one covers more territory than ANY other.

I've been doing numerology for more than 15 years and am so thankful that I picked this book up first. It is the most nonjudgmental and verifiabliy accurate form of numerology I've found to date, and I use her work as my only source now. As a twin born 1 min. from my sister, only numerology told the difference between us, and so accurately that I was hooked. Dr. Juno Jordan and her association of numerologists spent 25 years perfecting it. Start here!

Excellent book on numerology. If you're interested in studying numerology , this is the book you want. Received it as a gift from my daughter in 1977. I had never been interested in numerology, but from 1977 until the present it has become my special "hobby". I say hobby, however it is more than that, I do believe it is a tool for understanding people. A must read if you like numerology.

Juno Jordan was an original. As the daughter of a well-known numerologist, Ms. Jordan definitely had this in her blood. This book is one to have in your collection if you intend to seriously study numerology. Jordan is concise and clear in every chapter. I highly recommend this to all students of numerology, both for beginners and more experienced students.
