An important work by the late, missed and brilliant Francois Lyotard. An effective response to Deleuze and Guattari's "Anti-Oedipus", Lyotard almost succeeds in showing the libidinal drives underlying not only the economy but a critique of Marxism too. Here while seemingly accepting Freud's idea of the libido, Lyotard shows how much more complex and satisfying his take of society is compared to the cumbersome and unsuccessful try by Deleuze and Guattari to combine Marx and Freud. Lyotard uses ideas from Bataille to stress the organic development of man and society in contrast to the mechanistic structures of "Anti-Oedipus" which is reminiscent of most of the French rationalist school who want to reduce everything to equations of either bodies without organs, or a formula by Descartes.

This book was first published in 1831. I have an original hard copy. It had been given to my father. The book gives excellent pictures of life during those days, interesting to read. It's a book I treasure.

Good, concise reviews regarding the evolution of the first lifeforms on the Earth by the editors, the earliest cells by J.W. Schopf of the University of California at Los Angeles, the first animals by M.A.S. McMenamin at Mount Holyoke College in South Hadley, Massachusetts, chemosynthesis in the deep sea by James J. Childress at the University of California at Santa Barbara, Horst Felbeck and George N. Somero at Scripps Institution of Oceanography in La Jolla, California, intertidal fishes by Michael H. Horn at California State University at Fullerton and Robin N. Gibson at the Scottish Marine Biological Association at Oban, U.K., the physiology of the Koala by Robert Degabriele at Riverina College in Wagga Wagga, New South Wales, Australia, raiding ability and slavery in ants by Edward O. Wilson at Harvard University in Cambridge, Massachusetts, and viroids by T.O. Diener at the Department of Agriculture in Beltsville, Maryland. The other articles provide an excellent, broad overview of life's ability to survive in a variety of harsh environments.

Sharp & Strong - Don't Miss It!
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2007-07-06

G W Grant's solo debut has it all! This is an action packed novel that grabs you on page one and doesn't let go. The reader will find exquisite gems of insight in this original work. Comprised of 252 pages, this is an informative, no nonsense read that leaves you wishing to pick-up a sequel immediately.

The story follows Bill Miles, who at twenty-five had just graduated from college with a master's degree in business, and decided to join the Army. Sharp, quick witted and ready to take on the world, Miles completes Officers Training and receives his commission. Later, he is deployed to the Middle East as the commander of an elite, counter-terrorism and hostage rescue unit, only known to those in the highest levels of government. From Fort Bragg to Iran, Miles finds himself in the midst of an invisible war, tracking a faceless enemy that hides within the civilian population and adheres to no code of conduct. He's even forced to struggle with his superiors as his soldiers are ordered to maintain ridiculous rules of engagement when confronting this new enemy. This same amorphous struggle that now ravages the Middle East, from Gaza to Kandahar, struggles in which religion, nationalism and terrorism have assumed unimaginable degrees of ferocity, are all part of daily life, in
"The Life of A Soldier".

Grant delivers the most intimate and detailed look into the life of a soldier, that we are likely to see for some years. Masterful in his presentation of the complexities of the human drama being played out in the deserts of the Middle East. Extremely well researched and brilliantly executed, The Life of A Soldier gives the reader a front row seat, with the counter-terrorism unit, fighting bureaucracy, trying to maintain a personal life, while surrounded by an enemy determined to destroy our way of life. Don't miss this one! Despite your political affiliations this is a must read book.

Happy Reading!

Personal Note:
I've been married 15 years and never in that time has my husband read a book from cover to cover. Not once! However, "Life of A Soldier" changed that. He enjoyed this novel immensely. So much so that he is now searching for a second book that grabs his attention the way this one did!
Thank goodness GW Grant's sequel, "Prelude to 9-11", is scheduled for release in early 2008. :)

It is very easy to mention David Doubilet in the same breath as National Geographic as though that says it all. Of course his work has appeared in that illustrious magazine for many years and, well, perhaps it does.

Light in the Sea is a large coffee-table book measuring 12in x 12in and is packed with a collection of photographs taken in, on, around, above and, of course, below the surface of the sea. It is, however, far more than just another collection of photographs of fish, corals and other sea creatures - this is an complete exercise in what to aim for when taking similar photographs.

I am studiously avoiding such words as "Outstanding" or "Excellent" when describing the pictures contained in this book. This is because there are many outstanding and excellent photographers out there - but David Doubilet is a cut above the rest and in a class of his own. His photographs need no such description.

There is far more to Underwater Photography than taking good photographs underwater and, having studied the many images in this book, I would suggest "Light in the Sea" is the template on which any aspiring underwater photographer should model their own abilities.

Sea Creatures are photographed from every position - with wide-angle lens and with macro-lens, from above the surface, from below the surface - and even from half in and half out of the water. Islands are shown with rows of coconut trees along the shores in the background and rows of corals underwater in the foreground - and all in a single photograph. Even that well-known rocky promontory in Egypt called Ras Mohammed is photographed from a new and exciting angle.

This is a book where every photograph is an abject lesson in photography with each one making the statement; "this is what you should aim to achieve when taking a photograph like this." This is a book where the Master has demonstrated his art to the student and I salute the author.

The original Knight of Darkness
Helpful Votes: 4 out of 4 total.
Review Date: 2007-09-29
This book reprints the original story that was used in the creation of Batman by Bill Finger and Bob Kane.

Lingo is a great story were each mob boss gets stymied by the Shadow until the mob turns on him and removes him (permanently) and sets up a new boss. Eventually, a boss named Lingo takes over. This is where the story gets good.

The second story in the book is the original story Bill Finger used when he and Bob Kane were creating Batman. The first Batman stories had him carrying two colt 45s and being a socialite friend of the chief of police. Change the names to Lamont Cranston, The Shadow and Commisioner Weston instead of Bruce Wayne, Batman and Commisioner Gordon and you have the exact same story! (With the exception of a nephew turning into a niece, that is.)

The historical articles in this book tell the story of the first Batman comics, as well as an interesting article from Jerry Robinson, who joined Bob Kane and Bill Finger to create the most memorable villain of all time, the Joker!

This thicker-than-normal book is a great read as well as a fount of historical information from the early days of superheroes. Get it. You'll love it!

This is not one of the more popular revisionary bios of Livingstone, but anyone interested in his life or Africa at this time in history will do well to pick up a copy of this book for the 16 pages of color plates and the 100 black and white illustrations. The photograph of Livingstone with the rhino horn was obviously taken pre-Freud.
