A Canadian "On The Road"

This utterly wonderful book received little attention when it was released and, sadly, has dropped off the radar screen. But I'm willing to bet there are a generation of readers out there who will rediscover this "lost classic" and restore it to its proper place as one of the best travel novels ever written. Imagine combining Alex Garland's THE BEACH with Jack Kerouac's speed-fuelled journeys through the human heart and you'll get an idea of what I'm talking about. THE LAST INDIA OVERLAND is one of the ten best Canadian novels of all time and one can only wish that author Grant will one day write something nearly as fine. An essential and sensual reading experience, as brilliant and original as the day it was released.

Latin Charters of the Anglo-Saxon Period
Helpful Votes: 4 out of 4 total.
Review Date: 2007-10-15
J. M. Stenton, who was a leading authority on Anglo-Saxon England, published and extended three lectures on the development and end of Latin charters in Anglo-Saxon England. The first section discusses the evolution of the study of charters and the benefits and downsides of using them for historical research. For example, the massive amount of forgeries requires a knowledge of the Latin idioms and corruptions of the time since many forgers used continental Latin. The second section discusses the development of charters. They most likely were introduced into England in the age of Theodore and Wilfrid and are similar in form to documents from post-Imperial Italy. He discusses the style of charters and changes made from king's reign to king's rein. Especially welcome, is his emphasis on King Offa's of Mercia influence. In the third section he charts the downfall of the charter and the advent of the writ under the first Norman kings. One of the most illuminating passages discusses the advantages and disadvantages of the charter and writ.

This is a very scholarly work only for those who know substantial information about Anglo-Saxon England beforehand. It is impeccably researched (although since it was published in 1955 some information most likely is out of date) and the lists of charters he uses is in the appendix for reference.

I am currently only about 25% through each of the applications
covered in this course book, but already know without a doubt
that this is a terrific hands-on interactive booklet on MS Office
2003. All of the specs regarding included data files, step by step
instructions, exercises that make use of real life business situations
etc. etc. etc. are true. I will probably get the MS Office 2007
course book when I am finished this. I have never had an easier
time learning and staying interested in a technical book on a MS
product before. Keep up the great products, DDC Publishing.

The black and white photographs displayed in Delins book manage to capture perfectly the utter devastation caused by the German WWII of Lebensraum. No narrative is provided nor needed as the photos speak for themselves....Their silence is deafening!!!

A must for anyone interested in this era

This is a great book for novices! If you are just starting to explore BDSM, and don't know much about it, this erotic book will totally satisfy your curiosity. It's about a young woman, Kathi, whose mother dies. When Kathi begins to go through her deceased mother's belongings, she finds "strange and unusual" things, such as whips, paddles, restraints, etc. She makes friends with a professional dominatrix, and through her Kathi finds her mentor, Horace. She becomes Horace's submissive and lover. This is one of my favorite books and I would definitely recommend it to anyone in the scene or interested in learning about the scene.

This is a great read. Not only because I am a direct decendant of Ludovic Grant, but it tells of a man who has no place in the history books, but yet his accomplishments were outstanding. We have several people who settled the frontier and lived amoung the Cherokee who's names you will never see in books.

Great Book about a Great Car Guy!
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2008-05-27
Gene Winfield has created some of the most memorable cars and is truly one of the great, but largely unsung, heroes of the hot rod and custom worlds. Gene was also unstoppable, winning driver, and a pioneer in drag racing. He has built more cars than anyone...and some of the most famous cars in films. If you have any interest in early drag racing, hot rod building or custom cars you need this book. This book will introduce to you to your new hero. The book is filled with amazing early pictures of the hot rods that roamed the streets and dry lakes and later ones of movie cars and gorgeous customs. His custom cars and movie cars are also found here. The story of a quiet, creative, unassuming car genius who managed to do it all and still today is wielding a torch and a paint gun is fascinating reading. Enjoy!

Legendary Lighthouses V. II continues the celebration of American lighthouses begun in the first volume, paralleling information presented in the second new PBS series and providing fine color photos of the lighthouses as well as a healthy dose of local and lighthouse history. Any with a fascination for the lighthouse will find this an invaluable guide.

Greg Bahlmann has written a all consuming fantasy book. There are funny bits, scary bits and action. If you want to be swept away into a world of amazing creatures and awsome places, then this is the book for you. I was really surprised at the fact that this was his first published work. It's a gripping tale of daring and exploit, one that I could not put down.

Vintage Sci-Fi, and worth reading!
Helpful Votes: 21 out of 22 total.
Review Date: 2005-03-25
Ahh, this is grand Sci-fi from the old swashbuckling days of Sci-fi space opera. Our heroes from the Legion appear yet again to save mankind. My favorite, Giles Habibula (based on Falstaff) appears once again in this time twisting adventure.

Turn off your expectation of hard Sci-fi, and strap on your blaster, fire up the Geodyne engines and we are off!
