George Miga's historically based fiction of Generals Grant and Lee's final mission is compelling and thought provoking. The main characters are Grant and Lee, of course, along with a very real and altogether flawed protagonist in Colonel John Spencer. Like any historical fiction, the reader must be convinced to suspend his or her disbelief (or skepticism). This book was able to do just that by virtue of its solid grounding in the nuts and bolts of the time period. Mr. Miga was clearly versed in the basic historical facts and understood what each character was faced with in light of the post Civil War climate. Remember, of course, that the outcome of the post war era was by no means a foregone conclusion. The war was still being fought in the hearts and minds of those that survived the carnage on both sides. There was a gut wrenching amount of change and residual bitterness that the nation had to endure before the incredible post war boom could begin in earnest. I came away from this book with a keen interest in the post war era where I had none beforehand. In the coming months, I will be reading about General Sherman in particular with an eye for his role in the war and its aftermath. For those that are looking for a research subject, Mr. Miga sets out an excellent prospect and that is the war from the historical perspective of the widows and orphans of that terrible war. Bravo! Thank you for this thought provoking work.

Do you have an idea ready for the marketplace? Are you eager to be a successful entrepreneur? If so, you will need money to turn your dreams into a reality. Luckily, the answers are close at hand. Robert Brown, Ph.D., an attorney, MBA and law instructor who, for over 25 years, has specialized in guiding developing companies to success, authored "2000 Financing Business Start-Ups: How to Raise Money for Emerging Companies." He and his co-author, Alan Gutterman, Ph.D., have written a highly readable and immediately useful book, offering clear and concise descriptions of all aspects of the fundraising process.

Drs. Brown and Gutterman describe the many funding sources available including: your own funds, family, friends, banks, equipment lessors, government agencies, angels, venture capitalists and, ultimately, the public markets. This book walks you carefully and comprehensively through the process of how to access each of these options.

Of immense value are appendices which include a sample business plan, term sheet, due diligence request and other important documents, forms and checklists along with extensive lists of both venture capital funding sources and bank funding sources. A CD-ROM containing all appendices is packaged with the book, allowing readers to easily personalize these forms and documents.

"2000 Financing Business Start-Ups" helps you avoid the pitfalls that many companies make in their early days which end up limiting their going public in the future. Throughout the text are compelling vignettes by CEOs, CFOs, venture capitalists and others who share their experiences about financing start-ups. In addition to the expert guidance from the authors, these stories amplify the main points of the chapters and add an authentic and personable quality to the content.

Thankfully, and as happens on only rare occasions with business and finance books, the writing is wonderfully clear and easy-to-follow. Drs. Brown and Gutterman use down-to-earth language and address this complex topic with ease and comfort. This book is a "must-read" and will serve as an important and often-used reference for years to come.

I am not a christian at all. And when I accidently borrowed this book from the library, I though it is a boring book and didn't want to read it first. But when I really start the last chater of the book, I am amazed by the solid information provided by this book. I took 10 pages to write notes from this book. This book gave me introduction from investment, insurance, tax shelter and will. The information in this book is conservative, traditional, but important, solid. If you are very aggressive in your life, this book probably not your first choice. But It works for me!!! BTW, I didn't read the first chapter and third chapter. These two chapters talk about christian life. I am not christian. Anyway, it is a good book! It is my pleasure to read it. Thanks for the author's work.

I've read a dozen grant writing books, and this one offers the whole package. Notable strengths of this book include:

1) Get the organization behind your fund raising effort. Barber hits where others miss by consistently illustrating the importance building support for your grant internally, throughout the organization. Only experienced grant writers know how important this is.

2) The dreaded budget. The bottom line in proposal evaluation is the budget. It must be easy to comprehend, be realistic and professional-looking. This book offers important tips on calculating overhead, in direct costs, and bottom-up budgeting that I have seen in no other grant writing text.

3) "Comprehensive Guide": This book (and accompanying disk) offers template materials as well as the historical and philosophical back ground of public funding and philanthropic giving. The book as a whole is important to understanding the nature of fund raising through grants while providing practical advice on how to get that important project funded.

I keep this book nearby and use often for reference.

Grant proposal writing magic!

"Five Days to Foundation Grants" is a succinct (a mere 74 pages), distillation of grant proposal writing magic! The author covered all the basics of grant proposal writing, including foundation prospect research on a budget (nothing needed but an internet connection), how to use storytelling to your organization's advantage, how to submit an online grant proposal, and what materials you'll need. I've taken two day accredited courses that didn't cover as much material as this book. The grant checklist forms alone are more than worth the price! Highly recommended!

Hurricanes' History up to 1993 - Scientific yet, fascinating

As a resident of Florida, I recently experienced Hurricane Jeanne rampage over the Atlantic Coast line. The photos included in this 118 page book are similar to those shown in our newspapers.

The book was researched and written by 3 experienced scientists, including 2 professors from Florida Institute of Technology (Florida Tech). It is written on a non-technical level and includes several eyewitness accounts of hurricanes.

I like this book very much because it is one of the few bound publications on this topic that I've found. Besides history of storms, it also gives hurricane preparedness guidelines and what to do after such storms are over.

I met a Swede and fell in love. I decided to go and visit him in Stockholm during Christmas break. I had never flown on my own before. This book saved me. It gave me the details I needed to know to get around the airports. I kept it in my carry-on and referred to it when needed.

Ohhhhh...we were engaged on that trip back in 2000/2001. We have been happily married for over four years now!
