A great American play

In this comedy/drama about American politics, Mr. Linney creates a wide variety of well drawn characters, while he examines the tensions between the personal and the public lives of the Washington elite during the time of Ulysses S. Grant. The characterizations are all well thought out, the roles being developed in Chekhovian fashion, and the dramatic structure is impeccable. The final confrontation between a strong-willed Washington widow and an ambitious Senator builds to a climactic moment that grips the audience. This is a play that should become part of the established canon of American theatre.

Wonderful, wondrous.

Elliot Lovegood Grant Watson was one of those rare naturalists/philosophers who didn't lose their wonder when studying the natural world. In a series of short anecdotes and essays Watson brings out exactly this sense of wonder in the everyday organisms such as ants, wasps, beetles and people themselves.

He describes with loving detail and a real sense of the writer who knows how to write, given his talent for writing novels, the life of a butterfly in symbiotic communion with a particular species of ant. He shows how a man brought up in civilisation can become a natural part of the wild environment once he open his heart, not just his eyes. He tells of life in Fiji with the natives and their peculiar ways, the almost homecoming he experienced during his time with Australian Aborigines. This includes, the contraversial story, "Out There", about the harsh and very real story of a white ranch manager and his association with Aboriginal women. He talks of many places and times with a very wide knowledge not only in a literal sense but also as a man of experience of the natural, wild, places. His description of silence in a deep cavern is remarkable, or the presence of tree roots at a depth of 160 ft is astonising.

It is an eloquent book, even if it doesn't really, except on one or two occasions, really challange Darwinian evolutionary dogma as was intended, it is a book of great beauty and in addition to a very few, such as Adolf Portmann's "Animal Forms and Patterns" is not seen much anymore in serious biological circles. Most unfortunate as the hardline mechanistic paradigm holds on tenaciously.

Wonderful, wondrous.

Of the three or four grant writing books I've gotten at Amazon.com this is by far the best and only one you will need. Most everything can be found on the internet, all you have to do is spend the time to rummage through it and put your program together.

I highly recommend this book. You need no other.

A purr-fect book for cat lovers

Reviewed by Lisa Frisbie

This easy-to-read book features funny and poignant stories written by cat lovers, for cat lovers. Anyone who has been owned by a cat will recognize the many antics and the often endearing qualities of the pets described in these pages.

Editor Callie Smith Grant gathered stories from her friends and some of her favorite writers, themed around the joys and heartaches of having a cat in the house. With a forward by author H. Norman Wright, the book is a perfect choice to read by your fireplace on a chilly winter evening.

"The Cat Who Loved Chemo" is the true story of a cat who made cancer treatments more bearable for the author during an incredibly difficult struggle to survive.

"Out of the Woods" describes a cat who showed up at the doorstep one morning while the author was on a sojourn in the Cascade Mountains. The cat soon felt right at home.

These and other stories will warm the heart of any cat lover. Although currently a pet-free home (we travel too much!) I found myself missing the companionship of a cat after reading these short, well-crafted stories. Two dozen stories are here, each one written by a different cat owner; each one a loving tribute to our furry friends.

Armchair Interviews says: Cat lovers, this one is for you!

I got this book at a seminar on differentiating instruction and am glad that I did. It has ideas and activities for grades 4-12. I was able to read it quickly, due to its quick-access format. Included are 87 pages of great ideas on grouping, adapting textbooks, prereading, during reading modifications, and after-reading activities. Following this section are 38 pages of reproducibles. I plan to use strategies from this book immediately in my middle school classes. This is a great resource if you want to "teach the student, not the textbook."

As a published poetess myself, and an avid reader of poetry, I have just received this lovely and beautiful poetry book of Mr. Roger Grant and have now read it, in full length, for a second time; as I feel absolutely in love with its genuine simplicity and charm. As a lover of romantic poetry myself, I feel in love with Mr. Grant's personal portrayal of love and romance intertwined with rapture and the divine concept of love itself; as he delved amid his own heart and soul within this sumptuously delightful and affectionate poetry book. I admire his whimsy and enchanting charm as I parlayed amid his poems which sang sweet songs of desire, warmth, love, passion and love in the real world; through his own intimate experiences and ones that may be of "courtly love" itself. I encourage the romantic and passionate poetry reader to own and enjoy this piece of divine icing on the cake, as it will serenade your heart into joy and captivates the soul of pleasure. Barbara V. This is a hard book to find, but it is well worth the search. It really should be back in print. The photographs are of very high quality, the text is excellent. The book contains a wonderul glossary and good review sheets. The work of course addresses reptiles from around the world and goes on to address their plight. This is a great starter book for kids and works in well with their science text books. It is always nice to have books like this hanging around the class room. Recommend this one highly.
