Great book by Mr. Masters. Excellent reading and a must have for all of us, British double guns lovers. Plenty of personal historical anecdotes and a great reference book (I found the Appendixes specially so). Great pictures! I would further reccommend this book without any hesitation. It is really a compulsory item for a well-stocked gun library!

I would also very much reccommend "The House of Churchill" by the same author. Same comments as above also apply to this outstanding book.

The Most Comprehensive Fully Illustrated Book On Dogs Ever

See more than 400 breeds of the world in full color. This is an extraordinary book weighing in at over eleven pounds. The 1100 color photographs of dogs are some of the most beautiful and life-like that I have ever seen. The book is well organized and the breeds are subdivided into various categories such as herding dogs, the terriers, the mastiffs and the scenthounds.

Snap up this edition while it's still out there. It has beautiful plastic page inserts with skylines and the one of New York City with the Trade Towers belongs in any family's time capsule.

Double Three Notrump!
Helpful Votes: 4 out of 5 total.

You know, there are only about twenty permissible words in bridge bidding: the name and number of the suit, "Pass," "Double," and "Redouble." Yet from that comes one of the most fascinating games the world has ever known and Grant is on top of it all.

BETTER BRIDGE: Bidding is an excellent book. In fact, the best beginner's book (and series) I have encountered for the now-dominant "Five Card Major" bidding system now "de rigeur" in most of the USA and Canada. (If you don't know what "four card" or "five card" systems mean, hold off on buying this volume and go for Audrey's "Basics" volume instead.)

Ms. Grant goes patiently through the rules of bidding, when to bend or break them, and when they can save your life! As in most books, she starts with simple opening bids and the "point count" system (where an Ace is worth 4 points, a King 3, Queen 2 and Jack one point). She concentrates on the all-important fit between you and your partner, sometimes called "an opening hand facing an opening hand equals game" and that strategy is where the game is right now, so to speak. She deals with the additive logic of the point count in finding the Three Notrump game bid, which is relatively easy, often much easier than the novice thinks it is.

But where Grant really shines is the emphasis on contracting for game with a total of eight cards in your and your partner's chosen major suit (hearts or spades), either five on one side of the table and three on the other, or four apiece (and all this from bridge's tiny bidding vocab). Going further, she deals with what to do when your opponents are messing up "your" system by intefering bidding. Along with Grant's simple, even charming teaching styles, two other interlocked benefits stand out: she teaches us to think for ourself BUT offers evidence to show how violating bidding conventions gets you into bad contracts where you go set (lose points to your opponents). In other words, she does a good deal of imparting wisdom, more so than most bridge books allow that the very novice is capable of.

So read "Basics," "Bidding" and then move on to the other books in this series. You'll not only get smarter, you'll have fun and as long as there are three other people, a pencil, a deck of cards and a pad of paper around, you will never run out of something to do!

(By the way, if you want to learn the kind of bridge in which any FOUR-card major can open bidding, you might enjoy Alfred Sheinwold's FIVE WEEKS TO WINNING BRIDGE, which takes you from the basics, the bidding, and even the play at a fairly advanced level. Quite a lot for a one-volume work.)

This intensely personal book on the Piemonte is a delight. It is a gorgeous pictorial survey of the entire region. The narrative brings a nice personal touch. And the recipes seem to be delicious. I plan on cooking several.

The Piedmont is the one region north of Rome that we have not visited. I am already planning my next visit to Italy based on this book.

A great book about the "greatest generation"

The author's descriptions of life on a Depression-era farm are funny, heartwarming and, to those of us who never rode a mule or shot a guinea hen for supper, enlightening as well. Tales of the down-home antics of his family and friends had me laughing out loud. His recollections reveal the life-shaping influences of World War II on a typical young American man who, in answer to the call to arms of December 1941, left behind home and family for exotic and often hostile far-off lands. I was engrossed with and charmed by the unfolding story of the author's blossoming wartime romance with a young beauty from the hills of Kentucky. For those who lived through the Depression and war years, the book should be an enjoyable "backward glance." The rest of us can gain a deeper understanding of those most unusual times. Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed this book.

I found this guidebook to be thought-provoking and easy to use. The theoretical foundation presented in the Orientation section creates a framework that supports the rest of the book. The description of the activities are clear and brought to life by the narrative account of the authors' experiences leading these groups. This book fills a gap in the counseling and boys literature.

very crude reality exposed

I got shocked by the crude reality exposed by the author. A reality which somehow coincides with most of the Mexican newspapers publish every day. The book exposes how the drug dealers business has permeated into the Mexican society. It is a good review of the complexity of the interplay between Mexican justice, the economy, and the corruption that have flooded most of the Mexican politic class.
