While intended for the San Francisco history buff, SAN FRANCISCO'S MARKET STREET RAILWAY, is sure to be relished by any urban traction fan: packed with clear vintage black and white shots of various incarnations of the Market Street Railway, chapters provide a wonderful overview of San Francisco's transit challenges over the decades. From central Market Street outward, changes from additions to subtractions of San Francisco and surrounding city trolley lines are detailed, with each photo receiving not only a descriptive sentence, but explanation of why it was important, expanded or discontinued. It's these extensive notes, tied to the vintage shots, which make for such an important coverage: this, and the attention to including historically significant yet clear, sharp photos.

If you have kids (or babysit them like I do) it's never too early to begin college planning. I wish this book had been around when I was prepping for higher education (yes, I'm from the dark ages, friends). There isn't a better book on the market when it comes to the fine art of securing scholarship money. And like my young charges, women of the U.S.A need to unite in an on-going struggle to be recognized by the university of your choice. Good luck ladies.

The world didn't begin with Adam, Eve and the PC with static IP's. In the land before time (Terminals with Internet and Monsterous E-commerce), you discovered various scholarships to apply for from books, magazines, and the news media. Students (like me) spent hours apon hours in 'scholarship listings' xeroxing every possibility that we would owe the government less after we graduated college.

Back when I started college (1998), the 'de facto' standard was this book by Daniel Cassidy. One year, a few of fellow High School students attended colleges out-of-state for free. Well, my guidence counselor fully believed in the power in this book.

Now, I'm out of school for three years and am starting to share my secrets on how I finish college for free (search for my name to read more on my website, if interested).

Long story short, this book is the standard in 'manual' scholarship searches. It features compact and succint listings seperated by your major and a section (general) that any student can qualify for. The print is readable, and it gives you the basic requirements for each scholarship along with contact information.

BUY THIS BOOK EACH YEAR UNTIL YOU GRADUATE! For the minimal cost of this book, the rewards you will get easily are reimbursed. The choice fore me is a no-brainer.

Do yourself some justice and get this book today; unless you want to pay 7% of 50k.

"Sea Changes" Rips through Space and Sociology

Like J.K. Rowling, Linda Grant dePauw has created a fully-realized original universe--this one inhabited by adults; the magic imagined future science; the school a spacecraft; and the select leaders meritocrats, not wizards. The fight of good vs. evil is quite similar, though, as are the vivid and empathy-provoking human characters, grappling with everyday situations in bizarre circumstances. "Sea Changes" has surprising twists of plot, many levels of complexity, and touches of the supernatural amid the hyper-natural. Best of all, one is left pondering societal changes that should arguable be made now or when advancing science and/or enlightenment make them possible. A stellar achievement on multiple levels and a compelling read, quite transcending its genre. Get your arms--and mind-- around "Sea Changes," then hang on hurtling through space and time and war and gagetry and emotions in a gender-bias-free zone.

Linda Grant De Pauw's Sea Changes is her second science fiction novel featuring Lieutenant Maggie Steele, an intrepid heroine of a navy without gender prejudice, with officers who have earned their rank in a meritocracy, and a time caught up in a just yet dire space war for the sake of species survival. A raucous and thoroughly entertaining narrative of adventure, sexual tension, Sea Changes is also an original work of surprising, emotional hidden depths of character is a tautly woven story of science fiction adventure.

David Miller deserves a great deal of credit for bringing
General Montgomery Meigs to life. Through his incredibly detailed work, the life and times of this gifted builder,
architect and general become chrystallized in the reader's mind.
The number of personal letters included in this volume are nothing short of remarkable. The inclusion of so many portions of personal letters from the mid-1800s allows the reader to share directly the thought processes of Meigs, his supporters and his detractors. The copious footnotes are outstanding as well. Not to mention the great photos.
In a sense, this is a textbook as well as a biographical work.
I am very impressed. Thank you,!!!
Signed, A distant relative of the Quartermaster General

This is an excellent biography of one of the most important -- although most overlooked and underrated -- members of the Union high command in the Civil War. Montgomery Meigs was, quite literally, second only to U. S. Grant in importance, in that he was the genius who kept the supplies moving up front. He also had outstanding pre- and post-war careers as engineer-architect. A most amazing (though not particularly attractive) man, whose life and works are splendidly described in a well-written, fascinating book. Civil War buffs owe Miller many thanks.

As a principal of a professional services organization, I read books such as "Shenson on Consulting" with the goal of learning but also with a critical and jaded eye. Shenson is clear and to the point on what it takes to succeed; simple principles such as "always be on the lookout for new business, but never appear needy" are timeless and yet often ignored by consultants.

In this book you will find strategies for marketing yourself or your organization, creating actual business from that marketing, and retaining the business. It also gives practical advice on referrals, invoicing, collateral and much more.

I felt compelled to write a review after I found myself mentally consulting the book to handle a referral properly AND recommending the book to a friend building their own consultancy; all within the span of 30 minutes.

I wish I had read "Shenson on Consulting" five years ago.

This is a fantastic book on marketing consulting and professional services. Unfortunately, Howard died shortly after the 1994 edition was released. As a result, I'm not certain that we can expect an update of this classic. However, whether or not a revised edition ever appears, this book is well worth searching out. Even in the age of the Internet, this book provides terrific insight into the strategies and tactics of marketing. The debate on fixed-project pricing versus time and expense pricing alone is invaluable and worth the cost of the book. Also recommend Shenson's "138 Quick Ideas to Get More Clients," Brody, D'Angelo, Kerley, and Zick's "Power Marketing For Consultants, C.J. Hayden's "Get Clients Now!" and, of course, Weiss' "Million Dollar Consulting". Overall grade: A/A-.

Tracy Grant is a terrific young writer. I have enjoyed all of her books; I've never been disappointed. Recently, while Web surfing, I came across a quote about this wonderful book, Shores of Desire, that I would like to share with others. (Unfortunately, it was unattributed, so I don't know who should get the credit for it---but it was not I.) "Shores of Desire includes scenes in and around the Battle of Waterloo and is one of the most straightforward and moving descriptions of what a battlefield is like that I have ever read." And she does the romance part great, too!

Very special

Because of his command of English, Robert Lescaut is a very successful spy for the French Republic during the Napoleonic Wars with England. After completing a dangerous mission, Robert is placed on leave. He returns to his home only to learn that his English wife, Lucie, is at a nearby inn, probably rendezvousing with a lover. Robert goes to bring his spouse home. When he arrives at the inn, he finds his wife dying from numerous stab wounds. For the next four years, Robert delays his quest to uncover the identity of Lucie's killer until he is no longer needed by his country.

When Napoleon is exiled to Elba, Robert Melton and his son David visit Scotland where they assist Emma Blair deal with an injured person. Robert tells Emma that he knew her husband, who died in Spain two years ago. She invites the pair to stay at Blair House. Emma is also a single parent, who has no plans to find a new man in her life. Robert echoes her sentiment about the opposite sex, having no desire for a second wife. So why did these single parents fall in love with each other? What will happen to their love when Robert reveals that he is Robert Lescaut, seeking to uncover the identity of his wife's killer among her family tree, the Blairs?

Tracy Grant continues to rise to the top of the historical genre with her latest regency romance, SHORES OF DESIRE, being one of the sub-genres top five novels of the year. The story line is filled with intrigue, romance, and suspense. The characters add a badly needed freshness to the sub-genre. Of special note is the rousing Robert, who de-demonizes the French side of the early nineteenth century conflict with England. Ms. Grant continues to write some of the best romance books around today.

Should Old Acquaintance be Dead
The 25th High School Reunion is one that Kerry Grant will never forget!

The year was 1981. Kerry was a student at Pulaski High School. She had made arrangements to meet Shayna so they could work on the new stage set. Kerry arrived about ten minutes late. As she entered the auditorium it was dark and she yelled for Shayna to turn on the lights. Kerry found her way to the stage using the wall as her guide. She bumped into something and thought it was a sandbag. Kerry bent down to find the edges and realized it was not what she thought it to be. As the lights went up Kerry did see a sandbag but lying next to it was Shayna's body. The official investigation ruled Shayna's death an accident. They believed the snap hook holding the sandbag's strap malfunctioned and released it from the steal grid above.

Kerry did not believe this was an accident. To make matters worse, Kerry was questioned almost as though she did something to hurt Shayna. Why? They thought Kerry was too calm about all of this.

Now, twenty-five years later, Kerry and Jennifer receive invitations to their high school reunion. After some discussion, they decided to attend. They would enjoy seeing some old friends but the real motivation for Kerry is to try and find out something more about what happened to Shayna.
Kerry's wish did come true when she ran into Lisa Whitaker at the reunion. Lisa told Kerry she could prove someone murdered Shayna. Lisa told Kerry to meet her on the stage in twenty minutes and she would show her exactly what happened to Shayna. As Kerry headed for the auditorium to meet Lisa, she began to have an eerie feeling too similar to what happened the last time she went there to meet Shayna. What happens as Kerry gets to the stage?

Is Kerry able to solve this case before she becomes a victim?

Jean Sheldon writes a mystery that is so entertaining to read. Not only does this novel keep you in suspense but it also gives you several laughs along the way. The reader will laugh when Kerry and Jennifer discuss the pros and cons of attending their high school reunion (mostly cons). I am sure this will sound familiar to many readers who are trying to decide whether or not to attend their high school reunion. The attribute I like the most about Jean Sheldon's writing is her character portrayal. As she introduces each character, the reader will get a very clear image in their mind as to what the character looks like. This is not only done for the main character, Kerry, but even for the ones who play a minor part in the book. Readers will like Kerry Grant because she is strong willed and determined to do things her way - including wearing jeans to her high school reunion! Every now and then it takes this reviewer a little time to really get "into" a novel; however this was not the case with Should Old Acquaintance Be Dead. I was hooked right from the beginning and had that feeling throughout the entire book.

Once you read this novel, you will also want to go back and read "Identity Murder" which is the first Kerry Grant novel. We look forward to the next Detective Kerry Grant novel "A Chilling Goodbye" which will be released in the Spring of 2008. Be sure to add "Should Old Acquaintance Be Dead" to your list of books to read. It is well worth it!

Grant Shepherd tells the fascinating history of his family and their involvement in Batopilas from first hand knowledge. As a packer who runs horse trips to Batopilas I thoroughly enjoyed this book, especially the chapter recreating a trip out of the Sierra over trails we still ride. The writing style is sometimes a bit slow but well worth wading through. Great contribution to history of an important silver mining town with human insights that would otherwise be forgotten.

Wow!! The People of Light way surpasses the first book of the series. With much more complex subject matter, creativity, and characterization. Careful attention builds up the plot and characters. This book obviously sets the pace for the next books to come in the series. Clever and creative combinations of musical interaction give us a clue to the depths of the writer's talents. Can't wait for the next one to come!

Again, Mr. Grant has produced a marvelously written novel. The book continues right where Silverglade left off and begins a whole new set of adventures for Nemo and Quasar. The book is very well done, perfect for all age groups. Readers who liked the first book will definitely enjoy People of Light and the underlying Christian themes that it presents.
Great job once again Mr. Grant!
