Since its invention in the early part of the 19th century by Alois Senefelder, lithog raphy has always been not only a very important form of commercial reproduction, but also an art medium of great value. Many of the most important graphic artists have made use of the seemingly endless resources of the process, and currently there has been a considerable revival of interest in it.

Lithography is really not a difficult technique to use, and the equipment that one needs is minimal and not expensive. With the present volume, prepared by one of the foremost lithographic artists, a handy reader should be able to make entirely satisfactory prints. Mr. Arnold approaches lithography as an art medium, and while providing a detailed coverage that will anticipate all your problems, he takes you through each stage of the process: selection and preparation of the stone, sealing and cleaning, preparing paper, constructing the press, the printing operation, process ing after printing. A special chapter is devoted to specific things that can go wrong. and shows you how to correct them.

Mr. Arnold covers many types and variations of lithography: direct drawing on the stone (pencil, tusche, dry brush, lithotint, mezzotint, etc.) and transfer techniques from other substances. Color printing is covered in quite a bit of detail, while the use of zinc and aluminum plates as an art form is also considered. Throughout the book the exposition is extremely clear and very concrete, revealing simple, modern techniques that are easily used.

While this book is primarily intended for the person who has never made a lithograph before, it provides such a wealth of detail (based upon years of practical experience) and conveys so much about modern understandings that even an experienced lithog. rapher is likely to learn much from it. This is an ideal guidebook for anyone inter ested in this art form.

This is a terrific textbook. It has accurate information, good photos and illustrations, is well organized, and is easy to read. It is not the most detailed theatre history text out there, but, as a college professor who has read a great many of those texts, I find this by far the most effective tool for teaching undergraduate students about theatre.

A Cultural History of Theatre by Grant McKernie and Jack Watson is a terrific tool for learning about the development of dramatic arts. The book traces the history of theatre from the Greeks to modern day. By combining theatrical history with developments in art, science, and politics, the reader gets a clear view of the world that shaped the dramatic performance of the day. I was privilaged to use this book in a class taught by Grant McKernie, a professor who makes theatre interesting for everyone from the serious actor to the serious sports fan. This is a great book for high schoolers through adults trying to understand how and why the dramatic arts developed.

Human nature in American democracy

Review Date: 2001-03-21
Toqueville's work unquestionably will last for as long as human nature remains the same. Certainly, it is diverting to read accounts about the topography and anachronistically idiosyncratic habits of the inhabitants of America over a century ago; the fundamental value of his work, however, lies in his acute understanding of human nature that does not change throughout time. I must, however, qualify this statement, since there is only one Book, the author of which I am in utter agreement. One part of his book I disagree with concerns the ways of ending slavery. It was not nearly as dangerously problematic as he thinks, since most Western nations that had had slavery peacefully eradicated it, and America could have done so by several means. (One way, although a distinct compromise, could have been for philanthropists, abolitionists, and/ or government to requite the slave owners their money and thereby instantly free those enslaved.) Having said that, I wholeheartedly agree with much of the work, and think that more than most writers on the American polity, he truly perceives how certain tendencies of human nature are revealed in this particular society founded upon practical wisdom, personal responsibility, self-reliance, and faith. Many of his disquisitions on these tendencies that could be accentuated in American democracy are now more thought-provoking than ever. One prominent example is his understanding of an issue fundamental to Americans. He famously shows how they are pragmatically intent upon getting things done by combining in 'societies.' A problem could occur if ever the citizens in general become selfish and much less self-reliant: 'individualism' could arise. He articulates a bleak portrait of a society in which none care to take personal responsibility, but are willing to sacrifice freedom for temporary security. This is disquieting for modern society, and it would be well were more people to read his work and learn from it.

I found this book in my college library and found it invaluable. I knew I would buy it, but was forced sooner than later because I could not keep renewing it. That's ok! It really is a great tool for my interior design senior thesis project.

I design buildings for a living and this book has permanently changed my outlook. Although about health care buildings, it's a blueprint for thinking about the needs of building occupants for any kind of institution. The authors obviously understand building users better than anyone I've ever dealt with. There are great insights in every chapter, and the sidebars alone are a great education. In my opinion this is required reading for architects and facility managers. The 2nd edition is even better than the first.

Karla Williams has introduced an extremely practical and well written book for those of us who seek to raise the bar in the arena of Annual Funds and Donor Development. I have many, many books in my library that focus on fund-raising strategies, and this is the primary one that I will be using to train my staff and volunteers. Why? Ms. Williams not only presents a world-view that is compatible with our organization but then presents very practical, step by step strategies to implement this vision of donor development. She begins with a fairly in depth and clear presentation of the history of fund-raising (which helps to put things into perspective) and then moves on to what she believes is the most effective and responsible paradigm for funding non-profits: one that honors and respects the donor constituency in addition to raising the needed funds for our various causes. The book features numerous case illustrations, easy to interpret graphs, and an integrated annual develoment strategy that can be fine tuned for any organization. Bottom line: Yes it may seem expensive but it is simply one of *the* best resources for annual funds on the market today.

Double Memory is an eccentric, eclectic collection by a pair of artists renowned for bringing fine art sensibilities to genre illustration. Both Berry and Hale have honed their skills since the publication of this book, so Double Memory should be considered an introduction to their work rather than a statement about their careers. But there are some wonderful pieces included in this book: Berry's paintings for Peter Straub's Mrs. God are real knockouts while Hale's manic Johnny Badhair canvases are simply amazing. Truly a wonderful collection.

Appreciating these two artistic geniuses requires at least a modicum of a fine artist mentality. However, if you possess the teachings and/or the mere exposure to such passionate art, this collection of outstanding work will ignite and inspire you at the most basic level. So when's Braid coming out, guys? ;) Bout time you updated your website too. ;P

Many people think that by just purchasing Babe Ruth from the Red Sox that created the Yankee Dynasty. This book is a great history of the man who really created the Yankee Dynasty. The first 50 years of his life he was not involved with the Yankees but was involved with other teams as a manager and also served as the President of a minor league struggling against the odds of survival. Until Terry Francona, Ed Barrow was the last manager of the Red Sox who won a World Series with Babe Ruth as one of its stars. This is a must read of a tough man who built the first of many Yankees dynasties. The Red Sox fans curse the day the Red Sox owner sold the Babe to the Yankees, but they should be aware the most damaging blow was losing their manager, Ed Barrow to the Yankees. For the students of the game, this is a must read. Even the Red Sox Nation should read this book to understand more of their history.

No matter how long you have worked in EDA field, this is one book you want to own (and get a copy for the company library). Even after 18 yrs in the field, I read this book often, it is an excellent source for references. I often read it to get a broader understanding of EDA, as well. This book is easier to read than almost all EDA books (even proper text books). Most chapter are written by authors of other EDA books, so it also serves as a introduction to most EDA books.
I just hope it gets updated every 5-10 yr to keep it up to date. I recommend buying both volume, but both volume are independent and you can buy just one based on the area you work in. Essential book for interviews as well.

Good reference for all EDA practitioners

Review Date: 2007-12-23
Even worked in EDA industry for 8+ years, I am not familiar with the extremely complicate EDA flow. I was looking for a book which can cover the whole flow, but still can refer me to proper references when I need to jump into any specific topic. This book is just the dreaming choice! Every chapter is well written within 30 pages and covers the most important concepts which are essential to know any specific EDA topic. The references at the end of each chapter refer readers to more advanced researches. Also, every chapter is written by the most famous researchers and/or EDA veterans. I strongly recommend this book to all EDA practitioners.
