Christian mysticism for everyday

I have been reading many books by Christian mystics, and enjoy the in depth discussions of principles. Terence Grant does a terrific job of writing very directly & simply how the principles apply to everyday life. I am not a church-goer (yet..) but if a church-oriented friend expressed interest in mysticism, this is the book I would recommend to them as an introduction.

The best blend of Christianity and Zen I ever take

Highly recommended! Especially for those Christians like me who respect zen as a philosophy rather than a religion as a branch of Buddhism, and have the vague perception that zen can be practised as a style of life without compromising one's faith.

You can change without self-improvement.

Terence Grant describes a process of personal change through self-understanding and God's power. He describes how we struggle to attain some ideal and yet we are unable to attain the ideal through our own power. Instead we can gain freedom by learning to live in the present moment and listening to God in prayer. Mr. Grant provides a viable way of personal change without self-improvement.

Synthesis of the best of Eastern & Western mysticism

Grant, both a former Catholic priest and disciple of Zen, borrows from both traditions to create a new and exciting amalgam well-suited to the needs of spirituality-hungry moderns.

Using concepts familiar to followers of Eastern schools of thought, and using the Christian "centering prayer" popularized by Thomas Keating, Grant gives the soul-searcher a variety of new insights to explore on the journey of life. Highly recommended!

Mr. Grant definitely has a gift for writing! What an amazing book! Once I started reading it, I couldn't put it down. My mom was looking for me in the house and found me in my room with my nose buried in the book! Fortunately for me, it was over the weekend or else my schoolwork might have suffered! I enjoyed the interaction between the sons of Hiram and how loving they are towards each other. This book is great for anyone who loves adventure!

Silverglade is a charming tale of friendship and adventure, superbly written and refreshingly simple. The story follows two friends as they begin to change from simple shepherds to mischievous adventurers. Readers of all ages will be able to easily identify with Nemo and Quasar and the different situations they find themselves in. I for one could not put the book down once I had started reading. Silverglade has a very C. S. Lewis feel to it, reminiscent of the Chronicles of Narnia. Mr. Grant has created a fine story, and I for one anxiously await his next!

What a great book! Richard Grant's book about Nemo and Quasar and the House of Hiram is the quintessential story for boys of just about any age! (Even for Dad's!)
However...I should emphasize that although the main characters are boys, my daughter loved this story just as much as any boy would! The sense of adventure, loyalty, and excitement is one that both girls and boys can relate to! As a matter of fact, my daughter Tori has read it more than once and she is 16 and a high school junior now! It's a wonderful, mysterious and exciting tale....and speaks for truth, loyalty and other important values we all want our children to know! It will be a classic. I'm hoping it will be a movie someday! Hurry hurry Mr. Grant, we're awaiting the next title in the series!!!

Silverglade is an amazing tale that had me from the first chapter. Once I started reading, I was hooked! I couldn't put it down. It has adventure and fun and mystery all wrapped up into one. And while younger children will love it for that, it is also a great read for the older set. I loved it and I'm a junior in high school. It's a great book for boys, but I'm a girl and I thought it was awesome. Plus I loved the underlying Christian themes. Everyone is going to love this book.

This was the first book I've read on this subject and already I feel like I know so much! I don't know about you, but I'm doing much of my son's work in this area, so I feel like I'm doing the reading for him as well. It's important for the parent to be knowlegable even if the child DOES do the work, for they (the parents) will be doing much of the speaking and "negotiating" (key word you will learn much about) for the child. Have the facts to back you up. This author has been around and worn every 'hat' having anything to do with the whole issue of college athletics from parent to recruiter to agent to coach and MORE! You get the impression that you're really getting the inside information that you need to get the best deal for your child's education. Thank you Mr. Wheeler!

Prior to acquiring this book we knew next to nothing about the whole process. It is especially helpful for those who live in areas where a potential scholarship candidate is not likely to be seen by very many if any recruiters. The author does a great job in laying out a step by step process that a potential college athlete should take beginning long before their senior year in high school. He stresses over and over that it will not be easy and success will likely only be achieved through the same hard work that led to the development of that person's athletic skills. A couple of areas that were not covered as well as I'd have liked were a more delineated seperation of the strategies for Div 1 & 2 schools as opposed to Div 3 and more discussion of the pluses and minuses of parental involvement. These are not significant drawbacks, however, and I would give the book 4 1/2 stars if possible.

Excellent Guide!

Good and evil battle it out
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2008-05-22
On one side, a power-hungry necromancer, a legendary swordsman and a blood-thirsty spirit. On the other side, a young slave, the Lords of Freeport and an unknown monk. Thus the lines are drawn in the greatest battle in a thousand years--a battle that will eventually affect all of the Isle of Türmak, because if Freeport falls, the entire Isle will fall and become subject to the evil of the Dragon.

Andrea has been a slave all her life. When the choice is between letting herself and her fellow slaves starve to death and risking her life and limbs to steal some food, she takes the chance and steals some pieces of bread from a nearby baker. Unfortunately the theft is discovered and knowing her life is at risk, she flees her household to take her chances elsewhere. A mysterious monk saves her from forest bandits, and sends her to Freeport where the residing historian recognizes her as â~the stormcaller' from the prophecies â" the only person strong enough to save them from the Dragon and his followers. But she can only do it together with â~the man carrying the sword' â" and he has yet to show his face.

Ever since Legion was thrown out of Freeport, he's fought the Eternal's warriors. Now he's finally standing to gain all he fought for and get his revenge. Then why is his mind suddenly filled with doubt? And why can't he stop thinking about the girl he saved? He wants Dragon to win⦠doesn't he?

The Stormcaller starts suddenly and throws the reader right into the action. This makes it instantly exciting, but also adds some confusion as there are a lot of people to keep straight, and they aren't all immediately distinguishable from each other. I soon caught up though, after which I lost myself in a fascinating fantasy tale.

Just like the age-old favorites of The Chronicles of Narnia, The Stormcaller has clear Christian undertones and describes the eternal battle between good and evil in a new and refreshing way.

Armchair Interviews says: New look at good and evil's battle in this Christian fantasy.

The story was compelling, the plot was captivating, and the characters were well thought out. It is basically safe reading for older kids (though totally an adult book), maybe 13 and up, since there is no swearing or other inappropriate distractions in the writing, though there is fairly thorough description of the condition of the necromancer's living dead followers, a league of evil monsters, and intense war scenes...just a heads up for more sensitive readers. I personally wished the story would not end, and look forward to the next installment! These writers really showcased how much Christian talent is being swept under the carpet by mainstream media. God bless!

I was given the awesome privilege of being one of the first to review the book and make grammatical corrections and suggestions for clarification. This book is magical. The mystery surrounding Andrea and her powers as well as the deep thread of good versus evil keep the reader coming back for more. A must read for all of you who love fantasy where good definitely wins out. Grant and Russell have a creativity and uniqueness to their writing that is refreshing. Enjoy!

This is a great reference resource for those interested in Fund Raising. Simone does a wonderful job pulling resources from all over the development world together in this text. Then she critically questions their impact and ramifications. Finally, she takes fund development beyond the practices of raising money and into relationships and leadership. It is a well rounded text and worth the purchase.

I have been building my professional library and count Simone's book as a "must have" and "most often consulted" on a wide range of topics. This book is in my top 5 list and on any reading list that I prepare as an adjunct to presentations. The theoretical concepts supported by practical examples makes this book a most useful resource for the new and seasoned development professional. As the number of fundraising resources grow there are numerous books on special topics. For this reason and due to the caliber of this book, I hope that it remains widely available. As someone who has been a subscriber to Simone Joyaux's newsletter over the last two years, I knew that her book would offer me many valuable insights into how to do my job as the Chairman of a non-profit cultural institution better. Indeed, Ms. Joyaux's book took the goal of building long term, profitable relationships-the lifeline for any non-profit-and broke it down into a step-by-step road map that our instituion was able to put into effective use immediately. All that non-profits need to know to become more financially sound is contained in this straightforward, comprehensive guide. The real life illustrations make the advice and guidance extremely compelling. An indespensible tool for serious fund-raisers!

I'm not a professional fundraiser, but I plan to become involved in nonprofits, and this book was great! I know of some nonprofits that get all of their money from corporate donations and then complain about not having enough money. This isn't the way to do it, according to Ms. Flanagan. In order to be a successful fundraiser, you need to ask, ask, ask, and you need to provide many different ways for different people to give. Flanagan goes into many aspects of the game, including how to send follow up letters, when to ask, how often to ask, and different ways of making it easy to get big gifts. I especially liked the way she talks about the psychology of rich people and poor people, and how both tend to give in different ways. She tells us never to make decisions for givers--just ask, present them with the different options, and let them decide. Great advice.

I would recommend this book to anyone who wants to get involved with charity. The marginal profit from the first day will probably cover the cost of this book many times over.

Effective fundraising for nonprofits is a team sport. Read this book to learn how to lead and/or play. Two thumbs up!

This book provides the reader with time tested ideas on how to raise dependable money from a variety of sources. I really liked this book a lot. I don't know that I can say I like it quite as much as Fundraising for Social Change (ISBN: 0787984558), Fundraising Basics (ISBN: 0763734462), or Effective Fundraising for Nonprofits (ISBN: 1413300944). But it comes close. This book is very well written and well organized.

In Chapter 1 at Figure 1.3 we are introduced to the Individual Donor Development (IDD) diagram that includes the following eight levels (level 1 at the bottom and level 8 at the top):

1. Individual prospects - potential donations
2. Clients - fees for service
3. Customers - product sales
4. Guests - special events
5. Annual donors and members - direct mail, email, the Internet, phone calls
6. Pledgers and frequent donors - credit card and payroll deductions
7. Major donors - person-to-person requests, clubs, memorials, and honorary gifts
8. Planned-gift donors - bequests, insurance, and life income plans

The author has written her book around the IDD diagram. As a result, this book flows very well. It has a wonderful introduction, a good start, and moves logically to the end. After reading this book you should have a good grasp of fundamental principles of fundraising. You should be able to design a sound written fundraising plan. And you should be confident to move forward by implementing the plan you have written. A wonderful book I have read that will coach you in your attempt to write a good fundraising plan is "The Fundraising Planner" (ISBN: 0787944351).

Are you wondering if your NPO is on the right track regarding its fundraising efforts? If so, take a look at pages 19 and 20 in this book where you will find the author's Fundraising Strategy Planning worksheet. After plugging and chugging info into this worksheet you will know how your organizaton is doing and how it can improve. Also, for an overview of the fundraising process in general examine page 21. It's also where the author explains her book and what it is about.

There is no mention of capital campaigns in this book. And prospect research and how to do it is not covered very well. But other books do a good job on these topics. See "Capital Campaigns" (ISBN: 0763730505) regarding CC's. And see "Fundraising Basics" referred to above, and "Building a Strong Foundation" (ISBN: 0871012499) regarding prospect research. I haven't read it, but there is a book devoted to prospect research. See "Prospect Research" (ISBN: 0763751030).

I noticed a few times in the book the following concept: The tried-and-true fundraising system that still works the best is to (1) give your own donation, (2) then ask people you know for money face-to-face, and (3) then send a personal Thank-You note. If you read this book you will get the information you need in order to raise money. It will provide you with the know-how to do it. First, build a broad base of small donors, and then build a longterm relationship with the best ones. It's really just that simple. 5 stars!

This book has some of the best photography that I have ever seen. I ordered it because it has a very special place in my heart. My father is in it,in the Margaree River chapter. Your description of him just warmed my heart and the photo did too. He is Willie Joe Chiasson and I am his daughter Ethel Clark (formerly Chiasson). I now live in California. I was so pleased and proud to see this and I cannot tell you how happy you made me as well as him. I would also like to send my regards and appreciation to whoever else was involved in putting it together, such as Mike Crockett. Do the three dogs in the book belong to Mike? They look like the are having the time of their life travelling around and playing in the rivers all over the country. I would love to hear from you please.

I feel inspired. Without the guilt of many religious books, Mr. Schnarr answers questions to traditional questions of spirituality. He addresses questions about life after death, God, and the Bible. I like the straightforward, matter-of-fact tone that gets right down to business. This book offers a very simple, very practical belief system for the taking, but doesn't condem anyone for not agreeing. An excellent find for anyone looking for a reason to believe.

What an excellent book! I especially loved reading Mr. Schnarr's thoughts about marriage in chapter 6. "When a couple approaches their marriage with the belief that their love is eternal, it raises up the marriage to a new dimension from simply an earthly, temporal contract to something spiritual, above time and space." Being engaged myself, I found this section deeply inspiring- with ideas that will be immediately applicable to my life. At the same time, Mr. Schnarr's reassuring thoughts that "the Lord will provide" a deep and lasting love (if not in this world than the next) to everyone who desires it are invaluable to those who have that inner longing for a true love but who have been thus far disappointed. In fact, one of this book's greatest strengths is its ability to discuss concepts about God, the afterlife, individual purpose, growth, the Bible, and more in a way that is applicable to the lives of a variety of people.

Finally! Someone who talks about God and actually makes sense!

This book is such a breath of fresh air! Grant presents a view on timeless wisdom that, finally, does not insult
my intelligence. At no time does Grant talk down to his readers or over their heads. This book should be required reading for anyone who has experienced a crisis of faith, or has never found a dialouge about God that resonated to them. All I can say is Grant, you rock!!!

You Can Believe!: An Introduction To The New Christianity by Grant Schnarr is an informative introduction to the ever progressing world of modern Christianity. Following the fundamentals of the Bible-based teachings of the eighteenth century theologian, Emanuel Swedenborg, You Can Believe! examines the reasoning for personal detachment in modern society based upon a Christian wisdom and its preventative ideals, a detachment which is creating a more open-ended perspective of the Christian belief system. Very highly recommended for its thoughtful and thought-provoking presentation of a positive subversion, You Can Believe! is a superb analysis and profound study of the Christian religion.

If you enjoyed Sin City you'll love this book. Kimberly paints a vivid picture of the state of the world in the not so distant future. That picture includes lots of sex and lots of violence. Taken in the context of what the world is like then it's bad but not as bad as some may think by reading an exerpt here or there. Lots of care taken in discribing the sensations of the scenes. I felt like the guy in the dark corner of the room seeing all that was taking place but not being seen myself. Makes you wonder how much of the author is in the character..
Another hundred or so pages and the book would have been better but Kimberly's next offering will definitely be on my list of must reads...

I'm particular about what I read, and I've got my favorite authors; if I can't wait to turn the page, I can't wait to put it down - but as I browsed my favorite book store, I was bored and antsy and decided to break-away for something "fresh & different" to read. This cover DEFINATELY caught my eye, and the title intrigued me. I'd never heard of Kimberly Grant, but I liked her last name;) So on a whim I bought it. ...I HAD NO IDEA what doors were about to be unlocked in my imagination, and the wild ride that would follow.

I was immediately teleported into a future that was dark and cold-hearted; and while I read she cleverly included "flashbacks" in the lives (or what they'd read) of the characters and how the world had gotten that way that tied it all together. I don't think (hope) the world will ever turn out this way, but she feeds the imagination enough to make it a believable possibility. It's not a world I'd want to live in, but it was definitely exciting and worth reading about read about. There is nothing I can compare it too, but if you liked Mad Max, The Terminator, Logan's Run, The Equalizer, etc... ...you'll DEFINITELY enjoy this book, but those stories won't even prepare you for this - you'll STILL need a seat belt!! I don't want to give a way too much, it's a ride you have to experience yourself, and once you do - you'll want to ride/read it again.

It was by chance I found this book this time, but I WILL be looking for Ms. Grant's next adventure!! There's an addition to my favorite author's list, and one to her fan list.

There is no other woman like her!

This book was a great read! You sympathize with one character while you hate another and actually catch yourself speaking to the book like "what the.....! Was very gripping and sexual to say the least as the author has a spark/flare to heat you up and make you want to kick butt all at the same time. I will keep my eyes open for her next saga in the world of lust, despair and kink. She truly should write for Hugh Hefner and if you want a steamy, end of your seat, heroine type of book this is it!

This book has sex, it has violence, it has love and it has hate. It's one of those books you just can't put down because you want to know what happens next. Will the world really turn out this way one day? Let's hope not, but with all the sadness of what happens Kimberly shows you there is always someone that can survive through it. Don't miss out reading this one....it's GREAT!

I have been playing the game since the first day it came out. And since that day, I have been completely frustrated with it too. This book has helped a lot. It give full maps of all the enviornments. Every air ducts, every sub-level, everything! I play this game 24/7, so you can tell I like it a lot. The most helpful thing are the maps. The alien levels are mind-bogglingly long. It took me a week to beet the first level on the alien. I got this book and beat it in 15 minutes. It tells every charecter's weaknesses and strong points. It even gives a blueprint of the weapons and people. It gives info about everybody. It is really great.
