A history of two coal towns in Maryland and West Virginia

Review Date: 2000-11-01
The story of the people and land of the upper Potomac River is told in a way that makes one feel that they are right there, watching history unfold. The focus is on two coal mining towns, Kempton, Maryland, now almost a ghost town, and Elk Garden, West Virginia. I found the story so fascinating that I went to Kempton to see, first hand, the remains of the town and the beginning of the Potomac River, and to witness the recovery efforts that are underway to correct the environmental damage that the mining operations had left behind. History buffs who tour southwestern Maryland will find this book indispensible.

This is a wonderful book for young children! The pictures are rich and interesting. Their quality is matched only by the delightful, albeit, brief prose. This apparently is Ms. Moore's first book. She'll be one to watch!

A well writen comibation biography/history. For those whom Bryant is an unknown he was an early to mid 19th. Century American Poet/Newspaper Owner/Editorial Writer. Prof. Muller combines these two side of Bryants live very well in his narrative. Bryant was a Northern Democrat who dealth with the changing opinion on slavery during this volital period. This personal transformation and him still remaining a loyal Democrat till 1860 is a remarkable story.

The only fault I can find with this book is that the author incorporates Bryants poetry into the narrative, I would have perfered that he added them to the end of each chapter and not break up his narrative. Other then that minor complaint this is over all and excellent book.

"The Wisdom of the Sands" is a collection of Saint-Exupery's very personal reflections published posthumously as a series of parables. The rhythm of his lonely, compassionate, and mystical voice in this work enraptured me. The work concludes with the most profound and moving essay on friendship that I have ever read, one that far transcends his well-known fable "The Little Prince." His reflections on loneliness will resonate with anyone who has struggled with not succumbing to despair, and who has instead found God and love and compassion at the far end of this struggle.

Saint-Exupery weaves his great love for the vast, lonely, and empty Saharan desert of his youth that he crossed many times in the 1920s pioneering airmail routes for Air France with personal reflections and understandings of the Biblical mysteries that transpired in this same corner of the earth thousands of years ago. He returned to the African desert in the last days of his life, where he was based as a P-38 reconnaisance pilot in a world that had turned ugly and that ultimately, I believe, broke his heart, based on the sad voice that resonates from these pages, one trying to make peace with the earth and with life before he dies.

This collection, along with Dag Hammarskjold's "Markings," are my two favorite books, and both are very similar in nature though distinguished by their authors' personal voices and souls and writing style. Both document the spiritual journeys of two lonely European men in this century in a very personal way. Saint-Exupery's soulful reflections on the nature of love, friendship, loneliness, community, and duty are words I turn to again and again and that have grown with me through the years and acquired new meaning as I have matured.

At first when I picked up this book, I wasn't sure if I would really enjoy it. But as soon as I started reading, I got intensely wrapped up in the predicament of Hannah Kincaid, a teenager who was sent to live with her great-aunt on Martha's Vineyard. While she is there, she starts seeing things...Not only does she think she sees someone at night, but she starts having visions and dreams of a past time. Her life in the present with her new surroundings and new friends intertwines interestingly with the exciting and suspenseful events befalling her. The books wraps up with a satisfying ending that will make you want to read it again (I know I did!). I believe that anyone in middle school or high school could easily find this book engrossing, for many reasons. You can really "connect" with the characters in this book, because they were written very realisticly. And it's a fun book in general too. It isn't a chore to read; it's a very good rainy day book, when you want something that isn't very hard to read yet has a lot of substence. I would recommend this book to anyone, and I'm definately going to be reading it many more times again.

Read this series to my kids, now buying for grandkids

You will love any of the Muffin Family Bibles that you can get your hands on. I got them for my kids and now that they are grown, and after we got rid of their stuff in garage sales, I am buying to read them again to my grandson. What is there not to love about the Muffin Family Bible series? The graphics are great. The Bible stories picked hold the interest of children and then there is a modern day application based upon the Bible story with which the children can relate. I am just sorry that they are now used, but I am thankful that I can still find them.
Once you buy and read them to your kids, and grandkids, you will be thankful that there are still used copies too!
