This is the most helpful and enlightening book for the serious student of Christian Science. It was written as the result of first hand experience in Mrs. Eddy's household from one who had a deep understanding of the science of Christian Science. It does not take the reader into personal opinions about the church, just gives helpful insights into how Mrs. Eddy lived and thought and practised the religion she discovered.

What a glorious book! This book has a very nice text about the life of Parrish but its glory is the breadth and beauty of the reproductions. So many! This book was intended to be a guide to a traveling exhibition of Parrish's work. It includes photos which he used and many paintings large enough that they are fold outs. The woman who wrote the book lives in Parrish's old house and she is very well versed in her subject. The color is marvelous, the book is a joy to behold. This is a must buy for any fan of Parrish.

Meditations on Frantz Fanon's Wretched of the Earth, Part Two; was written by Owusu Yaki Yakubu.

David Gilbert is a North american anti-imperialist political prisoner who has collaborated with Yaki in the past, but he did not write this book.

This is part two of a work in progress, a study guide written by a New Afrikan revolutionary, and member of the Spear and Shield Publishing collective.

A Masterful Guide to What it Means to Be Human
Helpful Votes: 14 out of 14 total.
Review Date: 2007-02-12
In The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe, Lucy Pevensie found an interesting book on her friend's bookshelf titled Is Man a Myth? The subject matter makes sense from a world in which no human had been for quite some time. But even in our world questions about what it means to be human are at best unresolved by our culture. In Mere Humanity, Donald T. Williams explores humanity in the work of G.K. Chesterton, C.S. Lewis, and J.R.R. Tolkien.

Mere Humanity consists of an introduction, six chapters, concluding thoughts, and two appendices. In between each of these are one-page poetic "interludes" that reflect on various aspects of humanity. Over the six chapters, Dr. Williams analyzes The Everlasting Man by G.K. Chesterton, "On Faerie Stories" and The Lord of the Rings Trilogy by J.R.R. Tolkien, and The Abolition of Man, The Space Trilogy, and The Chronicles of Narnia by C.S. Lewis.

Dr. Williams did an excellent job of analyzing these popular works in light of contemporary philosophies and, most importantly, biblical revelation. He showed how Chesterton, Tolkien, and Lewis each dealt with contrary ideologies in their own ways in order to point their readers to the biblical understanding of what it means to be human. My favorite chapter was "The Abolition of Talking Beasts," as it shows what peril our culture is in by losing its human identity.

It is often said that we stand on the shoulders of giants. Chesterton, Lewis, and Tolkien were three Christian giants who have given people a better perspective of the world. In Mere Humanity, Dr. Williams brings their collective perspectives together to form an insightful and urgent critique of the contemporary popular view of humanity.

Michelins are the best guide books

I have been using green (and often red) Michelin guides for almost 50 years. For any area in the world they cover, they are clearly the best guide books available, with some caveats: one must have a good general education, and one must be able to read a very condensed map--skills many young Americans sadly lack. With those skills, however, as usual this new edition of the USA book is superb. Unlike almost all other travel books, Michelin offers clear value judgments, rankings, of sights. I have found over the years that I almost always agree with Michelin opinions. Because I like the series so much, and this book is very good, I give it 5 stars. Sadly, however, I don't think these books are as good as in past years. They should have more ½ page city maps, and there is no reason in the Green Guides to list hotels and restaurants. I suspect fewer maps and more hotels/restaurants are a sop to modern competitive requirements. For the most part, hotels and restaurants suggested are only the very most expensive--perhaps for those European travelers who have strong Euros to spend! Not much use to ordinary people! Another problem with Michelin Guides is that they are relatively expensive and if one travels widely, the collection of necessary guides (both Green and Red) becomes very large indeed. All that said, as an American I find this and the companion edition (Michelin USA West) wonderful reviews of the entire USA. If one has the time to travel widely in the USA, there is no better place to start vacation planning.

A Page Turner from Start to Finish

Police detective Martin Rogers is recovering from a shooting, working hard to regain the use of his legs. To fill in the long hours of inactivity, Rogers spends time in an internet chat room, playing cards with a regular group of surfers. That is until the witching hour, when he and the mysterious woman known only as Midnight connect via cyberspace and disappear into their own virtual world. Martin finds himself becoming more and more intrigued and enamoured by the elusive woman, who seems to find him strangely attractive despite his disability. When Midnight refuses to reveal any personal details about herself, despite Martin being openly honest with her, he begins to suspect that the woman he is falling for may not be all that she seems.
Martin confides his concerns to two of his fellow detectives, and soon he and his colleagues are joined by Assistant District Attorney Lisa Harris as a web of previous suspicious deaths of disabled victims emerges, all of whom appear to have been in contact with the mysterious Midnight.
A task force is set up to investigate the murders, and soon Martin, Lisa, and the team are involved in a case so complex, and so baffling, that they begin to feel as though they are chasing a shadow, a clever and resourceful criminal who they describe as being "like fog that disappears in bright light."
When police dispatcher Denise Woods is attacked and almost killed by the murderer, the police finally believe they are on the trail of Midnight, only to find yet more clouds of mystery as they attempt to penetrate the veil of the elusive killer.
What links Midnight with the name Norma Fields, and is Norma connected to the oddly named Norm Able? What connection does the reportedly dead sailor J.R Olson have with the case?
Vivian Zabel has crafted a beautifully and hauntingly compelling crime drama that leads the reader down one blind alleyway after another as Martin Rogers attempts to unravel the mystery. The tension is wonderfully wracked up as the storyline builds towards its shattering conclusion. Without doubt, this is one for the crime fiction aficionados, a book that cries out to be read, and one which I found very hard to put down once I'd begun. The characters are believable, the underlying romance that builds between Martin and the beautiful Lisa is tenderly and realistically handled, and the fear that things could go disastrously wrong for the heroes of this tale, right up to the end, is so palpable one can almost reach out and touch it.
A great read, tension personified, wonderfully written!

MIRRORS showcases the finest of Lela Gilbert's writings. Thoughtful and tender-of-heart, this book sustains an acute brilliance from the first page to the last. I'd like to see more like this from the pen of Ms. Gilbert.

some really unique stuff here...a farm family that was haunted ever after their young boys staged a seance, the Delta Queen's ghost, Missouri's yeti/abominable snowman/sasquatch...grave dowsers! Who ever heard of such a thing? But they are here. The ten new chapters are worth the price, even if you have the first edition. A lot of history worked into this, like Order No. ll which most of us never heard of before, but was a terrible thing. The illustrations are all new, different than the first edition, and there are dozens of new quotes about ghosts.

This is the 4th edition of the book and is well developed. If you have Martin's Physical Pharmacy, you'll find this book a suitable reference as well. This book focuses more on the industrial setting while Martin's focuses on the physical (as noted by the title). If you are working at any point in the formulation of a drug, this book is a must have.
