Judith Martin a.k.a. Miss Manners, through her protagonist Gilbert, displays all sorts of bad manners. Gilbert is charming
but uses his uncanny ability to know what others are thinking for evil. This novel shows how Gilbert gets successfully through
a top college and then manages to gain a sinecure through the use of cunning. He works and plays with power players and socialites.
In her columns and non-fiction books, she stresses that acquiring good manners is a reward in itself and should not be practiced just as a means to success.

Gilly: A Humble Crusader is the intrinsically interesting biography of Gilbert Roberts, an ordinary man who set out to accomplish
a happy life for himself and his family. Just as Gilbert reached his fifties (in 1955), he happened to visit a Navajo Indian
reservation and witness terrible starvation. Gilbert Roberts then spent the rest of his life striving to help these Native
Americans. Co-authored by Gilbert Roberts' son Howard Roberts, Gilly: A Humble Crusader is an especially recommended and poignantly
thoughtful look at life, the bonds of family, of love, of social obligation, and personal dedication.

OK, teachers, how many of you out there have cabinets full of teaching books that seemed great at that workshop, but proved
to be useless once you went back to school? Well, this will NOT be one of them!
After a brief introduction to the concept of (hiero)glyph(ic)s and a rather helpful strand/skill chart, the authors present full-blown and very detailed glyph/math lessons in order of escalating complexity. Each lesson covers several core topics (tallies, skip counting, odd/even, comparing, rounding, shape identification, coin counting, place value, telling time, just to name a few).
The lessons are tightly organized. While students do have the opportunity for self-expression (by answering survey questions), there is no FLUFF here. No cotton ball rabbits. Every question on every activity is directly linked to an NCTM objective, especially in the venue of collecting and organizing data.
I haven't used this book yet, since I just got it and it's only August. But as a 14 year veteran teacher, I can say these ideas ROCK! The activities are just difficult enough to be challenging, yet not so hard as to be frustrating. I am already planning the Apple activity for my math lesson on the second day of school.
I HIGHLY recommend this book to math teachers of 2nd, 3rd and 4th graders.

One of the few surviving original texts of the Gnostic sect of Christianity

The Gnosis of the Light is one of the few surviving original texts of the Gnostic sect of Christianity, once persecuted to
virtual extinction for heresy. Presenting Gnostic theologians' speculations concerning the nature of heaven, the meaning of
life, and God, The Gnosis of Light treats complex precepts as living spiritual texts, scrutinized through Fletcher Lamplugh's
interpretation and exposition, rather than as the tenets of a dead belief system. The Gnostic emphasis upon seeking the truth
is preserved in this brief yet informative, enlightening, and deeply spiritual compendium.

Interesting but definitely different, this book details Harvey Grosbeck's life and his relationship with God. It's _not_ a
religious or even particularly spiritual book, so don't be afraid that you might not like it because of that.
I recommend this book for those of you who are interested in trying something a bit different and not "mainstream".

This publication from the Aquarian press inludes a brief Golden Dawn history, a brief reference to the teachings of the grades,
some member catalogues and some other topics (bye-laws, administration matters, etc). It is an easy reference guide that hepls
everyone to have a rapid access to some rough information concerning the grades or other things of the first order. This remains,
along with the historical booklet The Golden Dawn : Twilight of the Magicians again from Aquarian Press and R.A.Gilbert, the
primer reference in historical matters; although a few more things have been revealed since 1986. One fact is that books from
Aquarian press are, unfortunately, out of print and have to be purchased in high prices.
To be fully updated take Darcy Kuntz's books Complete Golden Dawn Cipher Manuscript (Golden Dawn Studies No 1) and the Golden Dawn Sourcebook from Holmes' Golden Dawn series catalogue and is all you need to be well addressed to GD history and controversy.

The book itself is about the size of a 100-count pack of index cards and fits easily into your back pocket (hence, the name). It contains over 3,500 legal terms and phrases, common abreviations, latin and french legal terms, and periodical abbreviations. In other words, it has all information necessary to deflect the demonstrative yet caustic legal question from your favorite law professor - an interest common to all students of jurisprudence.
Preferred uses include taking a copy to class, packing one away for the ocassional business trip (just in case), and spot-checking grammer for the correct spelling of obscure and arcane legal terms.
This addition to your library is recommended if you already own a much larger and comprehensive law dictionary, required if you do not.
