I'm really glad I got this little book. I have a train layout but did not have the instruction book, so I had no where to turn to for information. This book solved the problem. I wish that I had it a long time ago. The information is clearly set out and there are many illustrations. For setup, maintenance and routine repairs, I highly recommend this book.

Leslie Baily wrote this definitive study of W.S. Gilbert, Arthur Sulivan and D'Oyly Carte at at time (early 1950s) where the copyright on the operettas was about to expire. Since that unhappy date, G&S has been swamped by the amateur dramatic societies and it is rare that one comes across a production which captures the brilliance of the original conception. Occasionally, an opera company puts on a good show but while they do justice to Sullivan it is usually at the expense of the libretto. John Lithgow is one of the very, very few modern performers who is able to draw the essence of W.S. Gilbert's lyrics. To travel to a time where G&S was cutting-edge, read this wonderful portrait of the two performers - both phenomenal characters in their own very different ways: Gilbert the mercurial, subversive master of the absurd; Sullivan the sensitive, working-class genius who often had to overcome serious ill-health to complete his scores.

This book must be on the shelf of any serious fan of Gilbert and Sullivan. It owes its origin to a BBC radio series on G&S produced by Baily in 1947. That date is significant because then-elderly people who had attended the first runs of the Savoy operas, and some who had actually known Gilbert, Sullivan, their partner, Richard D'Oyly Carte or performers of the first Savoyard generation, such as Grossmith, Bond and Temple, were moved to offer their reminiscences to Baily before it was too late. Baily had also cultivated the formidable Bridget D'Oyly Carte, Richard's granddaughter, and so had wide access to the archives of the D'Oyly Carte Opera Company.

"The Gilbert and Sullivan Book" was published in 1952 to great critical and popular success. My own copy is of the revised fourth edition, published in 1956.

The book takes the form of a triple biography of W. S, Gilbert, Arthur Sullivan and of the D'Oyly Carte Opera Company. The outlook of the author is intensely British. To Baily, the D'Oyly Carte tradition is THE tradition. While Americans are not actually described in black and white as barbarians at the gate, the implication is plainly there.

Baily was much given to hand wringing about the approaching year 1961, fiftieth anniversary of the death of W. S. Gilbert and the expiration date of the British copyright, which would deliver the pure and innocent G&S operas into the hands of insidious, non-traditional producers. In point of fact, nothing much took place in 1961 except for the beginning of a series of operatically-oriented recordings led by Malcolm Sargent, an old hand at conducting for the D'Oyly Carte Company. (From that day to this, of course, those Sargent recordings have been applauded by opera fans and dissed by diehard, traditionalist G&S fanatics.) For the D'Oyly Carte Company, real disaster came in the 1980s, appearing in a form far more sinister than anything Baily had feared: Maggie Thatcher and her penny-pinching government.

In the half century that has passed since "The Gilbert and Sullivan Book" first appeared, indefatigable scholarship has added some details to the story Baily presents: Sullivan's locked diaries, for example, were rather more lurid than Baily suggests and Richard D'Oyly Carte might have been a bit more slippery in life than he is in Baily's pages. Nevertheless, this book remains sound on all the larger matters in the lives of the two creators and unique as a history of eighty years in the life of a production company known the world over.

Moreover, more than any of his successors, Baily knew that he was telling an epic. His writing style and the dramatic arch he makes of the rise and fall of a great partnership is unmatched.

A solid five stars.

The Benford Lexicon, now in a new edition, is simply put, an absolutely essential work for anyone who wishes to understand Gilbert and Sullivan. By using this book, the shellac of years of tradition can be stripped off of performances, and the true wit and beauty of Gilbert, as reflected in the Music of Sulivan, can shine through. It also is quite helpful to the audience member in understanding some of the clever, although now not fully topical, references in these works. (Capt. Shaw, Army-Navy Stores, Knightsbridge, Camberwell a Bower, Peckham an Arcadian Vale... and so forth..)

This book is the first place I turn to with any language question in the wonderful world of Gilbert & Sullivan. Mr. Benford writes clearly and consisely, with a delightful (and occasionally wince-inducing) wit. Highly recommended.

As far as commercial outlines go, this is as good as any out there. It is very comprehensive. However, the more difficult parts of civil procedure (personal jurisdiction, subject matter jurisdiction, summary judgment) cannot be learned properly from any commercial outline.

That said, this outline provides an excellent structure for building your own class outline. The lazy student will also benefit from the clear explanation of the black letter law and the basic holding of important cases. Especially helpful are the index of cases and the index of federal rules of civil procedure in the back of the book which provides a quick reference to the materials in the outline proper. Also, the charts that Gilbert usually provides in its outlines are present in abundance and help frame the material in a quick, digestible fashion. I find the chapter approach section helpful to think about issue spotting and to provide an analytical framework for essay exams.

My advice: use this outline to get the big picture, to provide structure for your own outline, and to make sure you are clear on the black letter law. Then, use Glannon's Guide to provide a clear, prose review of the material and to test yourself on the concepts.

This outline pretty much has it all.

Civil procedure is one of the few classes where you can base the majority of your studying on a commercial outline and end up ok. This outline covers all the rules and mixes in the relevant case law at the same time. Great outline.

I'd never heard of Eddie Bowman until I moved to Tennessee. He came to the school where I teach and gave a performance. I fell in love with Gilbert the Goose. The song is cute, and the words and pictures in the book keep kids entranced. My students request it over and over. They also insist that I sing the song every time. I also recommend Silly Dog, Gravy on a Bucket Lid, and Sophie Snowflake (also by Eddie Bowman) as well as the story/song tape that accompanies them.

"Go MAD - The Art of Making a Difference" is a must-read for anyone who wants to make a difference in their lives. In this book, Andy Gilbert provides such a wealth of information, it is impossible to finish reading it and not want to get up and do something. It is written in a somewhat informal tone, which helps the reader feel more at ease and in control, as opposed to feeling like he or she is being lectured. Mr. Gilbert fills the book with inspirational quotes, as well as real-life examples of the Go MAD system at work.

There is a lot of information in this book, yet at no time does it feel overwhelming. Mr. Gilbert does a splendid job of not only taking a large subject and breaking it down into manageable pieces, but of showing how each of those pieces is dependent up on each other. He provides a number of pyramid diagrams that reinforce how essential each principle is to the others. With the use of seven main principles, the reader is introduced to the Go MAD way of thinking, and is taught how to apply this way of thinking to all aspects of life. Each principle has its own chapter, and beyond that, each chapter is further broken down into smaller sections, making it much easier for the reader to absorb and understand what the author is saying. Throughout the book, the author poses questions to the reader, as well as provides exercises to help prod your thinking and find where in your life the Go MAD system would be most beneficial.

Mr. Gilbert often takes a very direct approach to things, challenging the reader to move beyond excuses. At the same time, he does not instruct the reader on what to do; rather, he provides the necessary tools and leaves the ultimate decision up to the individual. It is each person's responsibility to make their own difference, and Mr. Gilbert is merely there to help pave the way. "Go MAD - The Art of Making a Difference" is a wonderful motivator and an essential addition to the library of anyone who truly wants to make a difference.

I am somewhat suspicious of readers reviews especially when someone gives 5 stars to a book i thought was so so.I have read more books on making things happen etc than i would care to remember so why am i reviewing this book. The reason is that of all the books on this subject, and it is a big subject this in my humble opinion is the best.It should be mandatory reading. It works apart from andy gilberts witty insights because it requires the reader to work hard in working through the authors questions in a proactive way to find a methodology that really works. This really and yes really is a remarkable book written by a remarkable author that you ignore at your peril.Buy this book and change your life.

This book is part of the curriculum for the United Methodist Lay Speaking course on Preaching. It gives good, solid, basic information that would help anyone who is called in to preach in a church. Obviously, as with all books, some parts of the book are better than others. The fashion advice is perhaps not the only viewpoint one would consider, but on the whole, this is a valuable resource if one finds oneself in the situation of being asked to fill a pulpit now and again. If you are taking a United Methodist Lay Speaking course on preaching, this book should be supplied to you upon registration, so buying it independently would be unnecessary.

This book, which I found at the library(can I say that word here?) was truly engrossing. The author juxtaposes indian and colonial culture so clearly and freshly, putting a historical and very personal perspective on facts not previously so well illuminated. He described and de-bunked for me the particulars of early period of colonial-indian political and territorial relationships. The action and battle scenes are painted with skillful brushstrokes as are the characterizations of the principle players. Mr Gilbert fairly describes with a warm heart the phenomemon which was the native American, sharing the fine points which created this honorable people without filtering the panorama through rose-colored glasses. The reader is reminded of this sad and shameful legacy of our country's history with each turn of the page. I think we would have been a much greater nation had we dealt these people an even hand. Great reading, greta history.

The history of the deceit effected upon Native Indian ancestors, especially the Shawnee, by the British, French, Americans, and by the Iroquois truly made me ashamed to be a white American. We call ourselves "civilized"; the lies, purging, and needless slaughter of Native Indian nations is comparable to the extermination of the Jews. Americans stole this continent from the Indians. Tecumseh (Tekamthi) was an honorable, just man, who only wanted what God had given his people - the land and the freedom to roam it and to use it (Mother Nature). As I approached the last chapter of God Gave Us This Country, I did not want Tecumseh to die; but I know he still lives on in the minds of living Indians as well as those of us who avidly study Native American history and who prefer justice
