Great story. Roy Carley, the man that wrote the book was a wonderful artist in CT in the late 60's and 70's. He had a TV show where he taught people to draw and paint. My 7 year old loves the book. It's got a great message.

Gibson writes an Absolutely Fascinating Book!

Gail Gibson has written an absolute wonder. While it is a scholarly work, it reads like a juicy Jane Austen novel. She travelled all over England researching church records, going to grave tombs, and going into random upstairs rooms in buildings rarely seen in order to bring us the real deal behind Late Middle Age theater. Not only do we learn about theater from this book, but we learn of the inner lives of the church, of patrons, and the cult of the virgin.

One person in whom we become intimately connected in is John Baret, to whom the book is dedicated. We learn he is a man who was very wealthy and had more influence in the church of one town than he should have had. He had the type of status within the church that a priest enjoyed. To find out why, you have to read her chapter entitled, "Three Lives".

An exercise in varieties of genre

Really three novellas. An exercise in varieties of genre to rival Chaucer. One story is a medieval saints life. One is story Salome told with a mixture or realism and luxurious orientalism; it is the source of Wilde's play and Straus' opera. The third, a Simple Heart, is a grimly realistic and low-key account of the life of a poor and not very bright but somehow noble country woman who suffers at the hands of a series of employers.

Let the transition begins
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2005-08-01
Those who have read "The Man of Property" and "In Chancery" are the only ones able to read John Galsworthy's "To Let". This is a book that requires previous reading and acquaintance with the Forsytes. For those this book is a treat. At this point we are in a transition. The old school of Forytes (Jolyon, Soames...) is about to `resign', while new folks are starting to assume the power and the money (Jolyon's third son, Soames' daughter...). The very old Forsyte school, by the way, is already history.

"To Let" is a novel of transition, it is as if the parents are passing the command to their kids -- at least in terms of narrative. That is why old plots (Irene, Somaes, Jolyon) and new ones are in the center of the narrative.

The story is set some twenty years after the ending of "In Chancery", Soames' and Jolyon's kids are virtually adults but they don't know the plot involving their parents (the story of the first and second novel) and are ready to fall in love. It is not surprise that Fleur (Jolyon's French kid) will fall in love with Jon (Jolyon's third son also named Jolyon).

But their main obstacle is not the fact that they are cousins, but the relations from the past. The narrative will focus on this Romeo and Juliet-esque couple whose union --or separation-- lies in a secret hidden in the past.

Those who have reached the third installment in the saga are those who have liked it and are looking forward to see what will happen to the Forsyte. So it is no mystery that Galsworthy exploits the family changes as a shadow of the change in their society --set about the 20's of the XX Century. As Britain Empire declines, so does the power of the Forsytes that can not avoid their hidden skeletons.

The bond between sisters is like no other.

Though this book is short, it does a thorough job of expressing a woman's feelings towards her sister. As I read this book, I felt as though Kim Anderson had transformed my very own thoughts into words. These kind and uplifting expressions of love are accompanied by charming photography of young sisters. It really warmed my heart. I knew I had to buy a copy for my sister to let her know exactly how I felt about the bond that we had formed over the years.

fun romantic read
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2008-04-08
Elizabeth Winterspoon is mistaken for a banker's daughter and abducted while on her way to her new teaching position. As long as the band of outlaws who kidnapped her believe they'll get the ransom they've demanded, she's safe. But what will happen to her once they find out she's not the banker's daughter?

Undercover US Marshal Jonathan Russell dislikes living a lie. It goes against his Christian morals. But what he hates even worse is the man responsible for his sister's murder: Red, the leader of the outlaw gang he's been able to infiltrate. Along with his partner Edward, and the camp cook Millie, Jonathan pledges to keep Elizabeth safe.

Forced to endure Jonathan's company, Elizabeth finds herself inexplicably drawn to her "protector". But after her father's deceit and the cruelty of the outlaw men in camp, can Elizabeth open her heart to trust Jonathan?

Will Jonathan be able to give up his bitterness and guilt over his sister's death? Will he be able to rescue Elizabeth and the others God has placed in his charge?

In a tale reminiscent of Janette Oke's A Gown of Spanish Lace, Gibson takes readers on an unforgettable journey into the terror Elizabeth experiences upon her abduction and subsequent captivity in an outlaw camp.

Likewise, Jonathan's emotions of bitterness, guilt, and his desire to reject the responsibilities put on his shoulders are dealth with in a believable way.

I have to also say that there are some unexpected twists in this story - like the number of times that Elizabeth tries to escape the outlaw hideout. Gotta love a spunky, stubborn heroine, and I did love Elizabeth.

This is a fun, romantic read that will brighten your day. Highly recommended!

The Truth About Canada
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2008-06-19
A great book; well documented and argued. It holds up for display the many myths about Canada perpetuated by the media and pundits as opposed to the reality.
The case is convincingly made out that Canada has in fact a corporate plutocracy and ideology calling the shots and running the show, under the guise and veneer of a democracy.
This book should be a must read for every Canadian who really cares about our country and where it is heading, and the future for our children and grandchildren.
