I was told that it is impossible to learn statistics and SPSS at the same time but this book proves that it can be done. It is very logical and the increasing complexity is easy to follow and the examples used in the book are easy to understand. Each chapter ends with an exercise section which helps to test your comprehension of the chapter. I have already used 4 other books and this is the best. Don't bother wasting your money and time with other books. I highly recommend it.

`This is a text that can be strongly recommended....I would imagine this book would be useful as a set text for undergraduate modules in social statistics, or as a resource on postgraduate degrees in social science that take a quantitative focus' -

`This book is a detailed and very practical manual introducing statistical methods for research.... In its treatment of statistics the book is accurate and has obviously been edited with great care.... For the reviewer, the main attraction of the book was the detailed explanation of principles that underlie test formulae. As a result, the mystery of statistical output is removed and the simple practicalities are laid bare. This approach, so necessary for deep learning, makes the work far more than a statistical recipe book with a DIY computing section. The author has gone to considerable lengths to assist students by including example questions with model answers, a glossary of terms, a list of key equations and a selection of statistical tables. A CD-ROM containing data files for student exercises is provided with the book and a public access Internet address is given for readers to obtain updated files.... For undergraduate and graduate students seeking to acquire an understanding of statistical methods for research, and the associated SPSS procedures, this book provides an excellent introduction' -

This is the rarest of statistics texts that combines complete accessibility (especially to "numerically challenged" students) with rigorous treatments of introductory and advanced statistical concepts. The integration of SPSS menus directly into the text is a unique and outstanding feature that allows for the seamless integration of this software package into lectures, problem sets, and exams. Practitioners will also love this book. This is THE text you want to own!!!

This book is a wonderful tribute to one of America's finest poets. The book appeals to both children and adults. The poems are whimsical and fun. In my own classroom, the children list these poems as some of their favorites. The art work inspires my students to achieve as much as they can in their own art work. The introduction and afterward provide the reader with a history of the Harlem art's movement and Langston Hughes' contribution to this movement. The information provided could be shared with children, however it is written for advanced readers. Overall, this book is one of the most well thought out books that I have seen.

A charming book....

Although I enjoyed this book as a Langston Hughes fan, I was not sure that the children's artwork and Hughes' poetry would be appreciated by children. However, my 5-yr-old clearly responds to the rhyming text and enjoys the art. I've overheard him reciting lines from this book by memory. The rhythym is soothing and the children's art is charming. This is not Hughes at his most profound- (couldn't he have chosen "walrus" to star on the "w" page instead of a white mouse?) and does not teach kids much about the alphabet ("m" is for monkey, but we never hear that word in the poem, instead the monkey's name- "jocko"), but it will appeal to their sense of rhyme and whimsy. I'm leaving it 5 stars because of the beautiful art and catchy poems.

A book that interests children in poetry!

This book helps children make the transition in reading poetry from the beloved Dr. Suess to reading more sophisticated writing. My children loved the rhymes, and related to the stories. Like Robert Louis Stevenson in A Child's Garden of Verses, Langston Hughes captures childhood in his verses. Many current writers of children's poetry appeal to children using gross stories of bodily functions and gum in the hair. Langston Hughes gives kids more credit than that, but still appeals to children. What kid hasn't wanted to look down on "those stuck up clowns" in real life? This book was entertaining, and made my children want to hear more from this author.

If you appreciate Boy George and his talent as a singer this book will make you appreciate him as a man. The candidness with which he shares his life, its tragedy and heartbreak, the drug usage and the fey wildness of his life in London shared with his cronies is fresh, real and honest - nothing phony. He doesn't gloss over his own imperfections. When you've finished the book you love the man all the more.

Yes, this book is 500 pages long, but Boy George has managed to get your attention and hold onto it throughout his book. It only took me 4 days to read this book because George was so open and honest about his life, mistakes and tragedies that I couldn't set it down!

George takes you step by step through his entire life, thus far, and retraces his steps from anonymous to famous. From happiness to tears. (I even shed a few tears of happiness and sadness when I was reading it.)

If you are considering reading this book, DO NOT hesitate! You will never regret reading this book. I love Boy George, my sister on the other hand isn't all that fond of him and she still was interested in reading his book, that is how great it is!

This book is the size of a coffee table book, but you can actually read it and learn something. It is difficult to find a good history of the phonograph, especially the business history of how it developed. This book fills the bill. It also features a large number of clear photographs so you will know what the author is talking about. If you are interested in antique talking machines, or need a good coffee table book, this is a good choice.

Nice color photos, easy read although there is so much information and names, one can get confused on who is who and what company they started and worked for. Covers the complete history of the phonograph and the records that play on it. Explains how it came about, all the patent wars between people and technology that changed the phonograph early on. Nice sized book, easy to handle, easy read. Beautiful color photos of phonographs of all types. Lots of information. Worth having if you love old phonographs.

The Talking Machine: An Illustrated Compendium is an extraordinarily well-assembled collection of nuts-and-bolts information, fascinating anecdotes, and gorgeous photography. Those who are familiar with this subject will find as a great a plunder of knowledge as those who are just beginning their education. The book traces the invention, evolution and maturation of the mechanical "Talking Machine," variously known popularly as the phonograph, gramaphone, graphophone, victrola, etc., depending on manufacturer. We learn of the birth of this amazing instrument in the hands of Thomas Edison's labratory cronies, its period of idleness immediately afterward and its re-birth and "perfection" some ten years later. We follow the incredible and relentless period of patent lawsuits. Learn who among the famous helped "make" the invention with their visits to the recording studio. Discover the many small firms in the Chicago area which sprang up and were often as not just as quickly snuffed out by the "Big Three": National Phonograph (Edison), Victor Talking Machine, and Columbia. The well-presented text is sumptuously augmented with an amazing collection of beautiful color photographs. This book is not cheap at $70, but would be worth twice the amount in the invaluable information given!

Other books are either translations from another language and do not make sense, or are so complicated that the instructions are not feasible. This book makes knitting machine techniques simple to learn.

This account of a harrowing journey is so hard to put down. You will be shocked to see the sights of Kennan's journey. The dry, dark sense of humor in the writing is also very entertaining. There have been countless tales of journeys into the wild, and this will rank as one of the better ones.

This book was recommended to me while I was on the Masai Mara and as I thought the person doing the recommendation was great, I figured the book would be too. So I ordered and I was in for a treat. I suggest that you get out your atlas and follow the trail of these incredibly brave and determined men. The routes they had to take are very convoluted and you need a map to follow the story.
I am a birdwatcher and was thrilled with the description of the Kamtchatka(this is how Kennan spells it) Peninsula and was delighted they got there after a rough voyage across the Pacific Ocean. The most amazing thing about the book is that in the great mass of almost absolutely nothing they would come to a small town where there were stoves, rugs and down comforters plus dances, dinner and teas. It is a wonderful description of life in a time and place that most of us know nothing about.

Highly Recommend.

This book is the fascinating travel journal of George Kennan(1845-1924) who was employed by the Russo-American Telegraph company to explore Eastern Siberia in 1865. Leaving from San Francisco in July 1865 Mr. Kennan and three other men set out for Petropavlovski in Kamchatka. From there they began a march to the northwest, meeting the Sea of Okhotsk and then detouring West for a while until heading north, exploring Eastern Siberia as far as the Berings strait, to Anadyrsk. They navigated rivers, saw the Aurua Borealis in February 1867. In the end the exploration did not lead to the laying of telegraph cable, but nevertheless this account should rank with Twain's `Innocents Abroad' as one of the great pieces of American travel literature of the 19th century.

Kennan has a dry sarcastic whit, like Twain, and he writes on many things, from wildlife to flaura, to the people and the country. Most amazing is to consider the great distances covered by such few people. There are many interesting stories and insights into the hard life of Russians in the far east. There are also descriptions of the many native peoples, including Koraks, Kamchatdals, Chookchees, Yookaghirs, Chooances, Yakoots and Gakouts, to the depth of describing rituals, marriages and the languages.

The greatest, almost unforgivable, oversight in this book, one that is almost crippling, is lack of even one map in an account that begs to have many maps given that it is both a travel narrative and one that mentions many obscure places and tribes that no longer exist in the same form today. The reader is left to imagine the position of the Samanka or Penzhina rivers, the villages of Genul, Okoota or Anadyrsk, or the most obscure villages in north Siberia, such as Geezhega or Shestakova.

A great piece of history.

It Has to Be the Mushroom Soup-based Casseroles

I wrote a review here when this book first came out, and somehow it's gone by the wayside, so here's part II which is more or less a faint memory of the first.

Southerners often provide excellent characters for stories. Perhaps it's all the sweet potatoes, fried chicken, and mushroom-soup based casseroles that are consumed south of the Mason-Dixon that creates these masterful personality quirks that George captures so well. Every character he creates, I can not only envision, but tell you who they're related to, where they go to church, and what their drink of choice is.

George, much like a character out of a Tom Waits song himself, writes from experiences and observations. He places the reader right in the heart of his narrators and creates a world around that's real enough to smell.

He's just brilliant. The book...also brilliant.

George Singleton is one of those writers who appears regularly in the best of quarterlies and reviews: Georgia Review, Shenandoah, Glimmer Train, Southern Review, even a couple stories in Playboy. This deserved collection has been a long time coming.

And this is no lie: this boy can write. His stories penetrate the South, depicting narrators in all manner of fixes (taping over a wife's sonogram, caulking a house to within an inch of its life, reporting on a fake tornado, helping blind men shoot pool) in a prose that is as elegant as the Peabody, as savory as barbecue. He nails the Southern experience (call it, perhaps, Good Ol Boy lit), creating empathetic characters and the funniest situations this side the Mississippi.

There are classics here ("Crawl Space," "Outlaw Head and Tail," and the title story jump immediately to mind), stories that deserve to be read for generations to come.

Treat yourself: try this book.

No one writes like George Singleton. Every short story in this grand collection -- as good as, if not better than, J.D. Salinger's NINE STORIES -- is a classic gem. Told with tongue-in-cheek, "These People Are Us" views the world in Singleton's own inimitable vision, sliding through the cracks of life with a grand sweep. In stories that have been published in Playboy, Georgia Literary Review and other literary quarterlies, this collection sings as no other song can be sung. I wouldn't be a bit suprised if Singleton doesn't win the biggest awards in the land with this, his first book.

Practical, common sense advice for readers

Reviewed by Kam Aures for RebeccasReads (4/08)

"Things I Know Now That I Wish I'd Known Then: 150 Tips for Living Smarter" is filled with practical advice to help you live a better life. In the Author's Note at the beginning of the book Newman informs the readers that this book is a compilation of lessons learned from his own personal mistakes. He is sharing the knowledge that he has acquired throughout the years in hopes of steering others down the correct paths.

The book is divided into nine different sections: Dollars and Sense, Traveling Smart, Relationships, Life Skills, Your Health, Business, Time Savers, Buying Houses and Investments, and People Skills. Within each section there are multitudes of tips with one to two pages explaining each tip in detail.

A lot of Newman's advice will help you stretch your hard-earned dollar. He recommends that when you are purchasing big ticket items to ask for a cash discount. Instead of buying a new car every three years he proposes buying one every ten years and just maintaining your existing one well. Rather than taking your banking business to a large nationwide bank, shop around and you will find that a lot of the smaller banks will have lower fees.

Other tips are included to save you time. If you have an option, instead of traveling during peak rush hour times, travel during off times. Instead of leaving a voice mail message for someone to call you back just leave a message saying what you would have said if the person would have been available to answer the phone.

Some of the advice I found to be obnoxious. One tip in particular that I didn't care for was how to obtain those "Hard-To-Get Appointments." In this section Newman gives advice on what to do if you have to wait months to get a doctor's appointment. He says to take whatever appointment you are offered no matter how far out it is and then ask that your name be placed on the waiting list to be called if there are any earlier cancellations. This advice is fine but then he proceeds to tell readers that you should then continue to call the doctor's office once a day to check if there are any openings. He says that you will "have a good chance of getting someone's cancelled appointment, if for no other reason than the office staff realizes they won't have to answer your daily calls any more." In my opinion, that is just being annoying and a waste of the receptionist's time causing delays for everyone else.

"Things I Know Now That I Wish I'd Known Then: 150 Tips for Living Smarter" would be ideal for someone who is struggling financially or someone who feels the need for more practicality, sensibility or common sense in their lives. The advice is basic and presented in a very easy-to-read format. While I found a lot of the tips given to be advice that most practical people would already know, I definitely could think of a lot of people who would benefit from this book!

"Things I Know Now That I Wish I'd Known Then" by George Newman shares his hard gained wisdom so that other may benefit and not make the same mistakes he has made.

Much of Mr. Newman's advice will save you money. Such as: Never pay the bank monthly fees. He shares how to find a bank that does not charge fees or only a small fee for your checking account. Take a list with you to the grocery store and try to go only once a week instead of twice. Lump your errands into one trip and save gas and time. Shop on the day after Christmas to get great bargains. Don't be afraid to ask for discounts.

I like to travel and was particularly interested in what he had to say about travel. His vacation checklist is particularly intriguing. Staying in a small town may save you big bucks. Turn off the water to your toilet while you are gone. You will save time and irritation if you request advance-driving directions from whomever you're going to call on or visit.

His advice on relationships is common sense that we rarely exercise. Look for more than looks and never think you can change some one. This one was my favorite: When you meet someone ask quality questions. You should always listen to what the other person is saying. Ask yourself if you share interests.

At heart I'm a very practical person. The information in this book is practical, logical and down to earth. I found it useful and interesting. It is written in a simple, easy to read format. There are 150 tips divided into 9 categories. The cover is to the point and explains what you will find inside. I like this book. I like the information inside and how it's presented. I highly recommend "Things I Know Now That I Wish I'd Known Then: 150 Tips for Living Smarter" to everyone. The practical will rush to buy it and enjoy knowing they already knew some of the tips and will relish learning the new ones. The unpractical need this book; lets hope the practical will purchase it for them as a gift. I can already think of several people that will benefit from this book. It is with great honor that I highly recommend this book for everyone.

It is very much to the credit of the MFA that such fine catalogue ise published. This collection of works collected by William Koch reflects the personal taste of the collector but also of the museum. Wisely, this catalogue is lead by good essays. The photographs accompany the texts in appropriate places. But the overwhelming part of the book is the art itself. These are paintings of fine quality. The reader makes refreshing discoveries on almost every page. This is an historically important, aesthetically rewarding book that deserves audience.

It isn't often that you run across an exhibition catalog that
is both an excellent record of an exhibition and a very enjoyable art book. This book chronicles the collections of
William I. Koch, someone with the financial resources, taste, and knowledge to assemble a very fine collection of
varied items. The exhibition took place at the Boston Museum of Fine Arts in 2005.

Most museum collections have items that have been acquired from personal collections whether from a donation or a bequest from an estate. It isn't often that a museum will have a collection of a living person, and one that is so varied.

Mr. Koch has wide interests, from racing yachts ( won the America's cup)to collecting fine art and paintings, to collecting Marine art, to collecting old west guns and memorabilia, to fine wines. Amongst his amazing wine collection are some original unopened bottles of wine from Thomas Jefferson's estate.

In the book you'll see his collections in there original settings, his estates in Palm Beach Florida, and Osterville,
Cape Cod. There is the stunning collection of art with pieces by Dali, Magrite, Picasso, Matisse, Degas. Bronzes by Remington and western art. There is the marine art collection with pieces that represent his famous ancestor
Captain Lawrence from the war of 1812.

In short this is a very pleasurable book to read and own, something that will always be fun to look through over the years.

I couldn't put Thomas Wingfold, Curate down. The spiritual journey that he embarks on, and continues throughout the book, is one that includes questions all Christians will have to eventually ask themselves. Some of the sermons and questions in the book hit home, and really made me ask questions of myself.

If you like MacDonald, this is a book with a clear spiritual message that will really impact you. I highly recommend it.

Thomas Wingfold, Curate is a wonderful story of redemption and the honest search for a true and loving God. Wingfold enters the Curacy as a profession, but it soon becomes a passion as he is forced by his position in the church to truly struggle with his faith (or lack thereof). He discovers the amazing love and sacrifice offered by Jesus Christ, and he can do nothing but share the amazing life (and death) of Christ with his fellow parishiners. He nurses a young man who is wrought with the agony of having committed a murder to spiritual health and peace in knowing that when he dies soon, he will see Jesus. We are given a glimpse of the immense power of divine forgiveness to those who so desperately need it and seek it.

A story of life, death, and True Life.

A young man commits a murder in a heat of passion, and when he comes back to his senses, must deal with the reality of what he has done. A loving sister finds that the love she has to offer is not as selfless as she would like to believe, as she finds herself playing devil's advocate for her own selfish reasons, instead of giving her brother the encouragement to face up to what he has done, repent, and take the consequences for his actions. (I'm afraid I identify with her here!) I keep thinking I have read the very best MacDonald book, and then another one comes along that I feel is even better! Such is the case with Thomas Wingfold, Curate. This story explores pride, judgement, conscience, forgiveness, the meaning of Christ's salvation, capital punishment, and how honestly searching, questioning, and hoping can bring us to a greater understanding and closeness with God. As with all the writings I have been exposed to of MacDonald's, I find this book inspiring and enlighting and at this point in my life, I find myself learning profound truths at the foot of this great storyteller. There is much to enjoy about this story from an entertainment standpoint. I found myself unable to put it down as I wondered what would happen next. Romance, some humor. and some heartwrenching moments, make this story an enjoyable and potentially life-changing read.

This novel emphasizes the struggles within the heart of a young pastor as he confronts his faith in God and examines whether what he professes to believe is acually true. His dilema begins when one of his congregation (an outwardly deformed but inwardly pious dwarf) notices that the sermons he is delivering are not of his own making. We watch Thomas Wingfold as he struggles to confront the Truth and then apply it to his life as he seeks to help a rich young girl deal with a grief that is threatening to open her up to a deeper part of life that she ever knew existed.
