Restoring the Rule of Law

Review Date: 2007-08-19
Professor Marjorie Cohn provides a much needed review of the Bush administration's legal record - from launching a "preemptive" war on the basis of palpable falsehoods, to advocating and even practicing torture at Guantanamo and by proxy through "extraordinary renditions," to warrantless wiretaps and spying on Americans, to overreaching claims of executive power that ignore validly passed laws and upset the framers' careful balance of constitutional powers.

Professor Cohn's book shows how an administration that claims a high regard for democracy and the rule of law has in truth demonstrated a deep-seated contempt for both -- explaining why the rest of the world is so fast losing faith in America and her ideals.

Professor Cohn's book should help Americans to come to terms with the harm that the Bush administration has done so far. And that, I believe, is a critical step to restoring our national decency and honor.

Daniel Ellsberg likes this book and so do I. Geoffrey Stone, foremost constitutional scholar, likes this book, and so do I.

It is a scholarly and complete exposition of a vital subject, the ruination of our country both inside and outside. Ms. Cohn skillfully describes the Bush-led hollowing-out of our former constitutional liberties coupled with a catastrophic war. Marjorie Cohn, President of the National Lawyers Guild, an organization of lawyers who value human rights over property rights, uses the analytical abilities of a skilled lawyer and law professor to point the way out of the mess.

Ms. Cohn's writing makes you want to read on and on, and lay all other things aside until the book is read. How many books of any kind do that to you?

Marjorie Cohn, a law professor from San Diego and the head of the National Lawyers Guild, lays out the evidence in a scathing indictment of the current president and his administration. Professor Cohn explains step by step so that anyone, with or without a legal background can understand just exactly what is happening to our country. She explains how the president and his minions lied to the American people to "sell" the war in Iraq, how the executive sanctions torture and murder, how our civil liberties are being threatened and actually taken away and most importantly, in my mind, how the president refuses to enforce the laws he disagrees with and sets himself up as a constitutional scholar interpreting the law to decide which laws are constitutional and which are not. This is a usurpation of power that is unprecedented in this country and is startling in the fact that Congress has become complicit in this "crime." The president has refused to enforce more than 750 laws acording to one article cited by Professor Cohn, by using signing statements in approving laws he objects to rather than simply vetoing them. These statements have been used by other Presidents to explain how the law in question will benefit the American people but in Bush's hands they are used interpret Congress's intent, a violation of the separation of powers, among other problems. Please read this book. Nothing could be more important, regardless of your political affiliation.

A masterwork of intellectual history

This is a fascinating book. It shows with great clarity and detail the seemingly benign and familiar sounding origins of full blown horror: nature and sun worshipping, nationalism, anti-intellectualism, homemade religion (among others) were the ingredients of the deadly brew which was produced in the most civilized country of Europe in the 19th century. Yes, ideas matter! Today's politicians and aspiring politicians would be well inspired to read it (but are they reading? If so, is it not already pre-history for them?). A minor regret pertains to the absence of any serious analysis of the role of Richard Wagner's operas and thought on the development of the volkisch ideology. However, the book makes it quite clear. Wagnerites (among who I count myself) beware: this book will sour their pleasure for some time. I also missed a few hints at what were the counter currents which failed to prevent the disaster.

A vigorous analysis of the cultural, social and psychological pathologies that laid the foundations necessary for the rise of Hitler. Should be read in conjunction with Bernard Lewis's "What Went Wrong" for two reasons:1) to forestall the accusation of orientalist condescension that will inevitably adhere to Lewis's analysis of the pathologies of Islamic civilization and 2) to realize where these pathologies can lead if we forgive them in the name of multi-culturalism. After all the PC Left of the 30's also talked about the justifiable grievances of Germany (until of course Germany invaded the Soviet Union). In my book "The Optimistic Jew" I discuss these pathologies and also warn against the possibility of similar pathologies developing within certain segments of Israeli society.

Mosse has challenged the set thoughts on the origins of the third reich (such as the Luther to Hitler theories and the idea that the people in Germany were merely subjected to propaganda, which ultimately shows the weakness of human beliefs). A must if one is studying Nazi germany or have an interest in twentieth century political theory.

I had to read Mosse's book for a graduate seminar on the Holocaust and found this to be absolutely fascinating. Not only does it show the progression of philosophies withing Germany from its roots in Romanticism to Volkish to what would ultimately become Nazi ideologies, but it presents the material in such a way that it becomes understandable exactly how this transition in thought could happen. Though the book is written as a scholarly history for scholars, it is fairly easy to understand, especially in the format in which it is presented. The first section focuses on the roots of Volkish thought and how they progressed from Romanticism in the late nineteenth century to Volkish in the early twentieth century which in turn lead to the Nazi ideals presented by Hitler to the German masses in the 1930s, a perversion of the Volkish. His second section examines how Volkish spread from small groups of idealists into the University system through literature and art, and through this infiltration of the Universities, as well as the German Youth Movement, expose its philosophies to a wider German audience than it had enjoyed before the first world war. The final section addresses Hitler's rise to power and the ways in which Hitler was able to manipulate Volkish and its intrinsic anti-Semitism to a radical degree to serve his purposes. Highly recommended for those interested in the Holocaust and/or Philosophy.

This is the story of Thomas Wingfold, Curate, who has settled into his first parish. He comes to realize he has chosen the ministry merely as a profession and honestly doesn't know what he believes.

It was very very good and made me think about Jesus and God's love for us. It is a very honest book and I cried several times as I read it. It has a great theme of forgiveness and mercy and a honest search for truth.

Excellent! MacDonald at his very best.

This is my absolute favorite of MacDonald's work. If you are looking for a place to start - this is it. This book addresses many of the questions and issues raised by Christians and non-Christians living today. Questions of God, truth, belief and existence. MacDonald draws out these questions and gives answers in the rich and multi-layered narrative style he is well known for. An absolute must read!

MacDonald is real. He understands people, their trains of thought, their failings, their desires. Through his characters, MacDonald provokes deep thinking and self-examination subtley and effectively. What makes him a good writer is that he isn't forming a plot so that he can preach a sermon or say all the things he wants to say. The story is purposeful and engaging and the dialogue is rarely tedious. I highly reccomend this book along with the rest of the series. The book will do more than keep you AWAKE...

When my now-grown daughters were very young they enjoyed reading about Elizabite and Katie No Pockets. I actually bought this book for my husband who is a collector of Curious George memorabilia. Curious George and Friends: Favorite Stories by Margret and H. A. Rey contains eight classic stories by the creators of Curious George. The stories are Curious George, Spotty, Billyýs Picture, Elizabite, Pretzel, Cecily G And the 9 monkeys, Whiteback Penquin sees the world, and Katy no Pocket. These are all great picture books for young animal lovers in one book. Many of these stories show kids it's okay to be different.

I enjoyed reading these stories aloud to my children. We love Curious George and were excited to read more by the Reyýs

If your family enjoys Curious George I recommed this book. The other stories are just as sweet as the Curious George stories.

Illustrated by Martha Weston in the style of Curious George creator H.A. Rey, Curious George Goes to a Costume Party follows George and the man with the yellow hat as they attend a Halloween party at Mrs. Gray's house.

What Mrs. Gray forgot to tell them, though, is that it was a COSTUME party! Mrs. Gray takes George upstairs to look through a trunk to find a costume, and George tries on many of them!

Will he be a ballerina? Nah, too silly. What about Frankenstein? Nah, too scary! What about a firefighter or a rabbit? No...one was too big and the other too small.

Which costume does Curious George ultimately select? And what happens when a white ghost goes sliding down the bannister to the surprise of the guests waiting below?

You'll have to read Curious George Goes to a Costume Party to find out!

If your child is a fan of the Rey books, as well as the PBS series, they'll no doubt enjoy this delightful book celebrating Halloween.

At first I was a little suspicious about this book, "illustrated in the style of H.A.Rey by Martha Weston." I didn't want anybody messing with my dearly loved friend, Curious George! I am glad to say that I was pleasantly surprised. This book tells the Halloween adventures of our curious little pal, as he and the man with the yellow hat go to a costume party. At first, George finds it a bit scary because he doesn't understand about make-believe dress-up, but then he gets into the fun of it. They need to borrow costumes from the hostess of the party and George has lots and lots of choices. Due to George's typical curiosity, the party becomes much more lively than the hostess intended! The story and the illustrations are true to the style we know and love from the original Curious George books by Margret and H.A. Rey. The pictures are brimming with action and excitement and colorful fun. This story has the added benefit of introducing some Halloween characters that little ones may be frightened of and showing that they are really just pretend and taking the scariness out of them. It also shows fun Halloween customs like jack-o-lanterns, bobbing for apples and other party activities. This is a real treat for Curious George fans and for fans of Halloween. Don't miss it.

This Curious George book is a nice alternative to other Halloween books, because it explores Halloween traditions other than trick-or-treating.

Curious George and the man with the yellow hat go to a friends house for a Halloween party, and it is a costume party. George and his friend have to borrow costumes from the hostess, and of course George's curiosity gets him in trouble. The guests play games like bobbing for apples.

This book is funny, like most curious george books. Children aged three and four who are just becoming familiar with Halloween will appreciate George's antics, and learn about halloween and costume parties at the same time.

There is nothing in this book that scared my son, aged 3. I don't think there is anything in here that would scare the average child of 3 or 4 years old. It's wholesome Halloween fun.

We received this book for a gift. Our son started enjoying it when he was 7 months old, and still likes it now at 15 months. The pictures are simple, and he enjoys feeling the different textures on each page, like the alligator's bumpy tail and the elephant's soft ear. His favorite part is the last page that features a large mirror. He hasn't been exposed to TV or any other Curious George products, so when we read the book to him we just call George "the monkey"...and he doesn't know the difference :)

This "Touch-and-Feel Book" for "Curious George: The Movie" is a simple, wonderful book for fans of the film. What is George curious about? Just about everything? And readers can feel what George feels with the textures provided in this book. The book ends with a mirror with the phrase above it "Hello, George!" Sure, they're talking about the monkey, but it's fun to think it's directed to me. ;)

Bright illustrations in the style of the film and simple but lively text make this treat.

Review Date: 2001-07-15
Early book by the great western writer Robert Utley provides a brief description of the Indian situation that evolved before the LBH and then he provides an abbreviated but well described sequence of battle events. Utley then describes the press' role in developing the story that caught General Sherman and Sheridan off guard as Sherman provides Terry's second controversial report to a reporter by accident. Utley describes the fireworks that arises between Custer supporters such as his old classmate Confederate Rosser and Reno and other military men such as Colonel Hughes, Terry's adjutant and relative. The controversy is even made even more complex by the chapter spent on the Indian's version of events that has elements of truth combined with confusing facts or half truths perhaps aggravated by poor translations and the Indians unique individualistic versions of battle that lack time and spatial realities. Finally, Utley tackles a number of the mythical stories about Custer and the LBH including Frederick Whitacker's quick print and fanciful book on Custer that became a best seller. The best part of this chapter is the discussion about the last four crow scouts to see Custer particularly the debate over when Curley departed from Custer. An excellent book that frames the controversies about Custer's battle which also explains the fascination, nothing is totally certian but amongst all the testimony and physical evidence, somewhere lies the truth.

Anything by Robert Utley is indispensible, especially when it comes to Custer as he wrote CAVALIER IN BUCKSKIN, probably the best biography of the man. Also to his credit are the official NPS Little Bighorn Battlefield guide, a biography of Sitting Bull, and numerous other Custer/Indian Wars/Western history books.

This book is primarily focussed on an examination of the immediate aftermath of the Little Big Horn and how the various lines of controversy were established that still echo (unresolved) and are with us today. These include Did Custer Disobey Orders? Was Reno a coward when he fled from the valley fight? Were both Reno and Benteen negligent in not responding to Custer's written order for the packs, an order with an audible reminder of the gunfire four miles away that, two days later, the men on Reno Hill learned signalled the end of Custer and his command. All of the seeds of future books and endless debates were firmly planted by the end of the 1870s, topped off with the Reno Court of Inquiry. Excellent insight into that event and some of the second-hand talk and gossip sorroundingsthe officers who testified and why they may have said what they did. Utley is his usual dispassionate, detached self as he explores these issues in his highly engaging writing style.

Originally published in 1962, the book concludes with Utley's brief commentary on most of the major battle books published up to that time. One can only wish that this section were revised and updated. Lacking that, we can all look forward to the autor's CUSTER AND ME, due in October 2004.

Despite its age (it was first published in 1962) this book is probably the best of the scores of books available to start with for those interested in exploring the ever elusive and controversial life of George Armstrong Custer and the Battle of the Little Big Horn. Utley, while steering clear of making judgments of his own ("I do not aspire to offer the last word on the subject"), lays out the scene of the battle, shows how the press and early writers colored events and created heroes and villains, looks at the Indian side of the story, and discusses some of the myths that have gone into creating the Custer Legend. The Custer literature is prodigious in amount, and tends to be either Custerphilic (pro-Custer) or Custerphobic (anti-Custer). Again, Utley refuses to take sides, but points out that virtually every "fact" regarding the battle and its participants issues up opposing interpretations. This short book gives a powerful sense of what the student of Custer and especially the Little Big Horn is up against. A useful and straightforward introduction.

Walter Camp had the great fortune and drive to visit the critical sites of the old west and seek out and interview actual participants and witnesses. Unfortunately, Camp did not survive to put his great efforts into a book but Hammer does the next best thing possible by organizing Camp's would be book and providing editorial commentary to fill in the gaps. Hammer collects Camp's material on the Little Bighorn and every page is full of interesting information. My favorite parts of the book are references to participants other than the main characters such as Peter Thompson and other members of Custer's separate battalion that survived because their horses broke down prior to the descent into Medicine trail Coulee. Hammer does an excellent job of providing clarification of the participants or writings of Camp in the footnotes so that you almost have all your questions answered by Hammer. A delightful book without harsh judgment offered by Camp and a great collection of readable material. It must have been frustrating to have first person interviews with participants when their stories clashed, were foggy or perhaps grandiose such as Thompson's alleged view of the valley as Custer descended to the river. Camp not only interviewed troopers but also Custer's scouts and Sioux and Cheyenne participants. Camp did a lot not to just record history but to locate historical sites in the remote West like Slim Buttes that without his timely intervention may have otherwise been lost to history. The only unfortunate aspect of the book is that there isn't more material and that Camp's health failed before he could draw his own conclusions. He also had the greatest vacation hobby, exploring and researching the old west before it was very old.

This book is used by most serious LBH writers and researchers as a very valuable reference. Just check the bibliographies of the most respected and thorough histories of the battle, and you will find Walter Camp's notes there. Reason enough that this book be on your shelf if you're a Custer/LBH buff. There is a wealth of information in these pages, especially the footnotes (which are often lengthy). Too bad Walter Camp died before he had a chance to put all his research together in his planned book. There are interviews with officers, enlisted men, white and Indian Army scouts and the Sioux/Cheyenne themselves. There are so many it becomes hard to keep them separate in one's mind, but that's a good thing.

His summation at the end tends to place him in the "Custer crowd" in that he did not feel Custer disobeyed Terry's orders, and that Custer acted appropriately with the information available to him at the time, although he does feel Custer fragmented his forces too much before the battle. One has to give his opinion great weight because he talked firsthand to more of the survivors of the LBH than anyone else.

Walter Camp was a railroad engineer most of his life, but as a hobby he enjoyed studying the various Indian fights that had occurred in the West, especially the Custer battle at the Little Big Horn. He visited the site numerous times and, more importantly, conducted scores of interviews with eyewitness participants, Indian and white. He kept files of his findings and after his death these files found their way into various libraries around the country. Kenneth Hammer here compiles the "notes" Camp left regarding the Custer fight. They represent, along with W.A. Graham's documented source book of letters, newspaper clippings, legal documents, and numerous other Little Big Horn memorabilia (THE CUSTER MYTH), the most important wellspring of information regarding the June 25, 1876, disaster. The information culled from the interviews with Curly, the Crow scout who was the last to see Custer alive and live to tell about it, are particularly informative in reconstructing what happened that day. He eventually interviewed over 60 survivors between 1908 and 1919. All serious books about the Little Big Horn fight will have to acknowledge the work done by Camp, and anyone with more than just a passing interest in the battle will want this book.

An excellent telling of the Custer fight

I read Mr. Camp's classic account of the Little Big Horn several years ago. It remains on my shelf as one of the very best books on the battle. It was well written, detailed and colorful enough for any follower of the Custer's trail. I highly recommend this book, which I read just prior to visiting the Custer battlefield on the 106th anniversary. Not to be overlooked or missed.

George Koskimaki provides a great account of what the troopers experienced during the great invasion of France. It's a detailed account of action for the 101ST Airborne. Amust read for History buffs, and reenactors.

The author was a T/5 (Technician 5th Grade) of the 502nd PIR (Parachute Infantry Regiment) when he jumped as the 5th man in the 16-men stick in the lead plane of his serial on D-Day in Normandy serving as a radioman to Brigadier General Maxwell D. Taylor, the C.O. (commanding officer) of the 101st Airborne Division. A total of 518 former paratroopers and glidermen have told their firsthand accounts to the author, today aged of 85 and living in Northville, Michican.

About the book from the backcover:

"A TRULY AMAZING COMPENDIUM." - Gerald J. Higgins, major general, U.S. Army (ret.), from the Foreword

"In the predawn darkness of D-day, an elite fighting force struck the first blows against Hitler's Fortress Europe. Braving a hail of enemy gunfire and mortars, bold invaders from the sky descended into the hedgerow country and swarmed the meadows of Normandy. Some would live, some would die, but all would fight with the guts and determination that made them the most famous U.S. Army division in World War II: the 101st Airborne "Screaming Eagles."

George Koskimaki was part of the 101st Airborne's daring parachute landing into occupied France that day. Now, drawing on more than five hundred firsthand accounts - including the never-before-published experience of the trailblazing pathfinders and glidermen - Koskimaki re-creates those critical hours in all ferocity and terror.
Told by those who ultimated prevailed - ordinary Americans who faced an extraordinary challenge - "D-Day with the Screaming Eagles" is the real history of that climactic struggle beyond the beachhead."

This book gives detailed information on each regiment and battalion of the 101st and its operations on d day. The storyteling is strictly informational, but keeps you excited. Some info and maps are very helpful, this book finally helped me to recreate the famous "jeep ride of Col. Sink", as it gives detailed maps of most important events of the 101st.
If your interested in the 101st or D day or in WWII in general, buy it, it is packed with information.
