FabulousReview Date: 2007-03-20
Well, the last two might not be requirements, but "Rocks and Regions" has all the above attributes. It covers the theory from stress/strain through all forms of deformation structures (joints, faults, folds, foliations & lineations, shear zones) to a part on plate tectonics (that subject really belonging in a geodynamics textbook). If that wasn't what all you wanted there is a short section at the end on things like primary sedimentary structures, mapping (cross-sections and the like), and a chapter on stereographic projection. Much the same material as that which is in pocket guides like the one by Ken McClay, but handy to have in textbook style. Authoritative? Aye. It's 23 years old this year, and in its second edition.
And now to the important stuff. Clear, readable, and interesting. Absolutely. Essential terms are in bold type when defined. As for readability and interesting, I'm so used to the stellar standard of expression used here now that other - previously decent - textbooks are almost unreadable. Interesting examples often not directly from geology are on every few pages. Funny as well. Most importantly, it reads like real people have written it. After describing the process of stress/strain experiments: "For sick fun you might want to try to calculate how much a limestone specimen of 3.00 cm original length will shorten in the first 5 minutes of shortening at a strain rate of 10^-14 s^-1. Then again, you might not want to." Sarcasm and wit abounds, which is better than riveting wonders like Telford's "Applied Geophysics zzzzzzzzz
Sorry about that. Did I mention it was full of great pictures? Unfortunately the edition has no colour illustrations, but it's not a critical drawback. Unlike the poor and often useless quality of many B&W photos in the Geological Society of London handbooks I have, virtually all photographs in Davis & Reynolds are clear and informative. Their sketches are also splendid, plentiful, and always relevant. Even small things are great, like the typeface and page layout.
This is one of the few (very few... okay, perhaps the only) textbook I've paid AUS$100+ for that was worth it.

Highly IntellectualReview Date: 2007-03-09
In this collection, The Word Sweep speculates on the consequences of words becoming physical objects upon utterance. Starcrossed concerns a probe ship guided by a cyborg brain. The Eichmann Variations considers an unusual form of mental torture. This Life and Later Ones is a cautionary tale about downloaded personalities. The City of Thought and Steel tells of the afterthoughts and nightmares of a mass murderer.
Godel's Doom conveys a way to prove Godel's Theorem and the possible aftereffects. Lenin in Odessa is an alternate history tale or is it? Sacred Fire is a story about future generations and the way they differ from their parents. Stooges introduces a novel means of first contact. Bridge of Silence conveys the frustrations of first contact with a truly alien creature.
Swift Thoughts is about a Moses who cannot enter the Promised Land. The Idea Trap relates the tale of a misfit who is perfect for a supporting role. Behind the Night provides new insight on immigration policies. Wound the Wind asks whether people should be forced to do something for their own good. Rope of Glass is about a man who isn't sure of what he is doing or why.
In the Distance and Ahead in Time is a side story of the Macrolife chronicles, telling of the differences between those on planets and those who travel the stars. Lesser Beasts concerns a Vietnam War veteran who kills alien invaders. The Number of the Sand is about the alternate histories of Hannibal and Scipio the Elder. Let Time Meet tells of the settlement of the New World by Carthagean refugees. Shrinkers & Movers is a tale of moving to a new home and the problems that can occur.
Augie concerns the problems of raising an Artificial Intelligence. The Last Science Fiction Story of the 20th Century is about difficulties of SF writers in the future. Catch the Sleep Ship: The First Science Fiction Story of the 21st Century tells of the demise of SF and one way of bypassing the problem. The Holdouts is about the results of a paradigm shift in physics.
This collection has an introduction by Gregory Benford and Author Notes following each story. These notes contain a good deal of musing on SF writing and philosophy, as do some of the stories themselves. One most unsettling thought is the decline of SF after a theory of everything is introduced. Naturally, this reviewer must disagree since SF would then absorb every other form of fiction (except pure fantasy) as biology, psychology, sociology and all other natural sciences are reduced to physics.
This collection is not for everyone. The author tends to excessive intellectualization in his short works. Sometimes they are way over almost everybody's head and interests. Too much Zebrowski can be hazardous to your mental health (at least for short works, but his novels are more commonplace). It is time for me to return to more active and less cognitive science fiction and fantasy.
Highly recommended for Zebrowski fans and for anyone who enjoys tales of high concepts, mental conundrums and other intellectual fare.

THERE IS SOMETHING OFF THE WALL IN THE AIRReview Date: 2005-07-10
BLARING SIREN * AN ABSOLUTE EYE OPENER AND SOMETHING TO LEARN FROM AND PASS ON TO THE NIEVE.
UNIQUEReview Date: 2005-05-13
ON a happier note. SUCH laugh out loud comical situations found in others here were enough to get the reader past the tearjerker.
ON an abstract note. FINE questionable examples of tests of the imagination were demonstrated in a few others.
ALL in all. THIS is some collection of off the wall situations and events that make one think and/or BELIEVE.
Tales by CandlelightReview Date: 2005-04-29
The majority around this house of mine enjoyed Blaring Siren. It is set in a busy section of Brooklyn New York and based around the main character Timothy, who would do anything to get a place on the FDNY. As he goes through his training and hardships, many others join the journey. You'll meet Timmy's parents, little sister Carol, family friend Mrs. Murray, friends from the academy Kevin, Harry, and Glenn, Del the bartender, and the girl who lights up Timmy's days at the gym, Cindie.
Another favorite with somewhat of a lesson to it is Remember Me. It starts off at a high school reunion where Jessica and Patty discuss old days in their own way. Jessica was not known as the sweetest girl in high school by many. However, there is one guy who thought he couldn't live without her. Bobby comes by to pay Jessica a visit after the reunion to see if he will still receive the same treatment from her after all those years.
After meetings with Bobby, Jessica seems to realize the error of her ways. She wonders if there could be anyway to make it up to him. With some assistance from Patty and old friend Denzbar, some very interesting information is revealed to Jessica.
Some lessons from these two stories and the others are how mistreating people can be hurtful, there may be more out there than they let us know, revenge can be sweet, and there may be certain plans for us that we shouldn't tamper with.
It shouldn't take long for this to hit the bestseller list. The only thing holding it back would have to be the fact that it was published by a print on demand publisher which increases the price and makes for less availability in stores that hold physical books. It does appear that more and more people are coming to the understanding that buying print on demand is the only way to find these fine writers that don't get picked up by the commercial, same old same old publishing monsters.

KEEPIN' THEM COMIN' Review Date: 2005-04-30
Both books are phenomenal. This one is superb with the short story concept. Each story is unreal and amazing in its own way. They are all page turners that make you really think afterwards and make you want to re-read each one. Every time I read one over I find bits of info that were missed the first time around.
The first one made me cry my eyes out. It also had the same affect on my sister. It was very touching to say the least. Without giving away the plot or the finish, let it just be said that I have new respect and deeper feelings towards those people when it seemed like that couldn't be possible a while ago.
My favorite had to be "Remember me?" That hit home in a number of different ways. It reminded me of several kids from my own high school, some who I loved and some who the world would have been better without. Revenge is quite sweet.
My sister's favorites were "wedding march" and "grandpa can still snap" she found them rather amusing as did I but the suspenseful thriller types with an odd eeriness to them are more for me. "I'm not leaving" and "eternal cocktail party" were two of them.
There are 15 astonishing stories total in this captivating collection, of which play with the mind.
The problem these days is there are thousands of movies that should never have been made, while there are thousands of stories out there that should be movies that are not. This book has 15 stories that have great movie possibility and trifecta of suspense has another 3. Just the thought of things like honey I shrunk my kids, kangaroo jack, jeepers creepers, and the pathetic remakes of other silly films astonishes me when there is so much potential in books like these.
The author is gifted, gifted beyond belief. Five stars are not enough.

PEACE ON EARTHReview Date: 2002-04-27
Mr. McGovern presents five possible solutions that may mitigate the plight of millions, among these worldwide WIC and school lunches, an increase in the food stamp program, and a minimum wage increase. Unfortunately, many of these measures seem implausible, for the ironic reason of their political inviability; FEW Americans favor an increase in taxes, to say the least.
I found this book to be more than an overview of hunger's politics. It is a window into the soul of a great man. In truth, world hunger would be a fading memory were we like Mr. McGovern: compassionate and selfless.
The Moral Imperative and Necessary Direction to End Hunger!Review Date: 2001-01-03
Senator McGovern has been close to the issue of hunger for many years, having first headed the Food for Peace program for President Kennedy and more recently working with the United Nations on food issues for President Clinton. In this book, he describes many of the lessons learned about allievating hunger in the United States and elsewhere around the world, the benefits from eliminating hunger, the barriers to making faster progress, the plans for making the next steps, and his proposal for eliminating world hunger for humans by 2015.
I remember hearing much about this subject in the 1960s, and especially recall the CBC special from 1968. Historically, American farmers had excess production that was hurting farm prices while people were hungry. During the Kennedy administration this was turned into a series of initiatives to reduce the surpluses to strengthen the prices and feed more people. Large gains were made in students attending school and in their academic performance through free school breakfasts and lunches for the poor.
What has happened since then? Well, the good news is that these and many other good ideas have been expanded around the world. The number of hungry people is still enormous, 800 million, but it is many fewer than 40 years ago. As Senator McGovern rightly points out, we now have the technology, expertise in food distribution, and financial resources to eliminate hunger for the final 800 million. All we lack is a focus on the issue, and the will to make a difference.
The U.S. contribution would be less than the cost of a building a B-2 bomber annually. It turns out that most people think that more than 10 percent of the Federal budget goes for foreign aid, and that is almost all food. Actually, foreign aid is less than 1 percent and most of that is armaments. In recent polls, over 70 percent of Americans favor ending world hunger. Throughout the last presidential campaign this issue got lost. That's a shame, because here is an area where we pretty much agree.
His proposal focuses on the following elements:
(1) Extend the school lunch program around the world (the bulk of the poor hungry are children, and this gets them to school and improves their ability to learn)
(2) Favor women and children in food distribution (because of their better use of the resources and the fact that this by-passes corruption the most) usually by providing the food at the schools for pick-up
(3) Create local food reserves around the world of the sort we have in the United States so that emergency food can be more readily available to respond to natural disasters and wars
(4) Train local farmers to be better at what they do and provide them with better technology, appropriate for their part of the world (especially better ways to irrigate that don't harm the soil)
(5) Support research into better agricultural practices, including biotechnology
(6) Reduce the arms made available to countries where on-going wars are likely since such wars cause much hunger
(7) Clean-up the water supplies to reduce disease at the same time, and eliminate the risk of future wars over water
(8) Further encourage democracies since they make avoiding famines a high priority.
One of the nasty surprises I got from reading the book is that despite world progress, hunger is growing again in the United States due to cut backs in food stamps and other programs aimed at hunger. If we have been making mistakes in this area, that's pretty bad . . . at a time of unprecedented prosperity and government surpluses.
I also hope that private companies and individuals will step up their efforts to take a hand in eliminating hunger. I suspect that the know-how of these individuals is probably even more valuable than their money and time.
I strongly encourage you to read this book. Write to your congressional leaders and to our new president about this subject.
Also, I suggest that if you can afford it, that you allocate $30 per person per year in your household for donations aimed at eliminating hunger. That's about what it would take. At least you would know you are doing your part, even if the rest of society sleeps. Ultimately, that's all any of us can be sure of, is that we have stood up and been counted.
This book should be shared. If you belong to a book reading group, I hope you will suggest it. I also ask that you give a copy to your spiritual advisor. This book could become the basis of some good projects for your house of worship.
Love thy brother as thyself.
Layman's Guide to Reduce HungerReview Date: 2001-03-05
In the 1960s, McGovern's origination and stewardship of food and agriculture policies led to programs that benefited the U.S. economy. In the new century, McGovern uses his national visibility and standing to propose fresh political remedies: food policies that favor women and children; universal school lunch; genetically modified crops; fresh water; and agricultural aid modeled on the Peace Corps. The author endorses government action, rooted in biblical teachings, to feed the hungry. While the book is short on documentation, it is long on policy. The title from Gary Hart's memoir of McGoven's ill-fated presidential bid, Right from the Start, may aptly sum up this new work.

One of, if not the best of Titanic books ever!Review Date: 1999-02-23
George has taken the results both Inquiries and some additional investigation and come to a very startling conclusion. Was the White Star Line negligent? Was "someone" trying to cover up certain facts pertaining to the navigation of the ship? These and many more questions are answered here in this book.
As the title suggests, Titanic was an accident just waiting to happen. I highly recommend this very important book.

Intriguing look at what really may have occurred that nightReview Date: 1998-11-05
Fred Fleet, the lookout, was quoted by many on the Carpathia as having complained of his earlier warnings re icebergs having been ignored by the bridge.
What is the real story? In this small, but weighty volume, Behe introduces us to those who talked about it then, who were quoted or misquoted in newspaper articles, and weaves a tale of politics and intrigue. He details the large flaws of reporting while getting to the core of the stories, including very possible White Star arrangements with Fleet and others to maintain silence. Whether or not one agrees with the conclusions, Behe makes a rather persuasive case for a night of truths withheld, though it's up to the reader how persuasive it is.
The references and citations are unusually thorough. Virtually nothing is said without a specific reference to an original source.
HIGHLY recommended. One of the top books on the Titanic and the puzzles of that night.
