"100 Essential Techniques" solved at least a half dozen situations right off the bat. George's writing style is clear and concise and his selection of techniques are those that you need to be aware of. Having flipped through the book several times reading what was intriguing, I am reading from front to back. I found that I could read this book on my comute and remember the simple steps on how to impliment the techniques when I was in front of the computer. Real sweet, what's next George?

It's all the information I was hoping to find in other books and didn't.

Clear but concise explanations of many of the features and functions you may already be marginally aware of, but may not understand how to use. These features are generally only mentioned in other books, but are more clearly explained here. I teach the Adobe suite, and feel pretty comfortable using these applications, but most of what I know has come from books because I live in an isolated area. Whenever a book comes along that helps me to understand features I haven't been using, I really appreciate it. Short on glamour, it is just black text on white pages; the techniques are most often presented in two page layouts with screen captures as needed. The book is small enough to hold on your lap or have next to the computer as you work. Reading and using one technique a day might be a great way to go through the book as opposed to just reading. Some tips will be of interest to new users, while others are aimed at the intermediate or advanced level, which is exactly how it's noted on the back cover. Easy reading, chapter headings make it simple to find what you need, but there's also a good index. I find the organization very helpful. There are general tips presented first, regarding the use of Bridge, and setting up preferences to work with the suite more interactively. Then techniques for individual application components are presented and I appreciate the inclusion of GoLive here since I use it. I know everyone else uses DW, but our school chose to go with the Adobe Suite way back when. I have been responsible for the extensive dept. web site and I found GoLive up to the task. And last, tips having to do with the use of Acrobat and Version Cue. I've been using Acrobat for years, but on a fairly rudimentary level and I didn't understand Version Cue at all, so this book has provided some terrific information there. All in all, I think this book is a bargain, excellent, much needed information presented in a simple format. Some tips may be over your head if you're just beginning, but later on you'll be glad they're here. Especially useful: tips on using Bridge more fully, the most useful and least understood aspects of Photoshop and Illustrator, using Master Pages and Frames in InDesign as well as creating books (something I need to do right now), CSS in GoLive (a special thank you for that), time-saving batch processing techniques, and Acrobat and Version Cue techniques that wrap up the final needed tips. This book is definitely not a rehash of anything you've seen elsewhere. It's all the information I was hoping to find in other books and didn't. This book is an excellent resource and I'll keep it handy. There isn't one thing in here I would consider filler. The subtitle is 100 essential techniques and that seems to fit the content perfectly.

So straightforward - a must read when upgrading!

This book was super helpful getting me up to speed when I did an upgrade from the pre-CS product line. It covers the basics, but also gets you into some of the more advanced time savers. There's a website for it too, which has been updated with a couple of new tips.

An excellent book, particularly helpful in discovering the new nooks and crannies of the CS line. It's definitely a book I wish I had sooner. It shed a lot of light on the Bridge as well as Version Cue that I just wasn't getting before.

I am familiar with George's style of writing and this book is no exception, to his casual yet informative tone.

I thought this book was terrific. I love Georgia O'Keefe and I've traveled to Lake George a couple of times, and it proved fascinating for me personally. But it's also a great read for anyone looking for a smart mystery. The main character has lots of wit. I can't wait for the next one.

Spectacular fall foliage and the beauty of the Queen of American lakes (Lake George) serve as the back-drop for an entertaining murder mystery involving the theft of previously unknown paintings by Georgia O'Keefe. O'Keefe fans in particular will enjoy the historical background that leads to the "discovery" of lost art. A great beach book.

Anne White has spent her life as a writer, editor and librarian. She has had short stories published in several magazines, including McCall's, Career World, Lake George Arts Project Literary Review, and Glen Falls Post Star. She holds degrees in English and Library and Information Studies. Affinity for Murder is her first novel. She lives in Glen Falls, NY.

Ellen Davies is occupying her uncle's old house in Lake George. Georgia O'Keeffe is one of Lake George's most notable figures, during the summers she spent in Lake George with her husband. Ellen is set to interview an art expert acquaintance of her new friend Diane's who is staying at her and her estranged husband's bungalow when they discover smoke, a fire in the bungalow...and a dead body:

"The partially burned body of a man lay on his side facing away from me. The handle of a long, thin knife or letter opener protruded from his back. Blood had puddled up around the wound and formed a grotesque strawberry mark on the man's tweed sport coat. The smell coming from the body and from the singed hair was sickening enough but it was the face, when I leaned sideways to look at it, that really started my stomach churning."

Anne White has written a thorough entertaining tale with punch lines galore, masterful description, and a plot intricate enough to pull the reader along until the final exciting denouement. Using Georgia O'Keeffe as a backdrop, her story has a "what if" and "it could happen" air about it that is compelling. Ms. White knows her O'Keeffe, and the stories and descriptions of her painting and life alone are enough to make this a great mystery. But, not content to rest on her laurels, Ms. White proceeds to write just about the perfect mystery.

An Affinity for Murder has it all...great characterization, action, eloquent writing, a heroine who is fun to follow, and a crackerjack plot line. She hides the culprit until the very end, and adds a witty twist just for fun. Excellently done, Ms. White! We would all love to keep following Ellen Davies! She is devilishly independent, intelligent, and savvy.

This mystery put all five of my senses right back in the beautiful Adirondacks where I was born and raised and lived untill I was 19. I could smell the wet leaves on the tall trees alongside Bolton Road and see their beautiful array of colors cluster after cluster. I could hear the wakes of the lake smashing against the docks at times and feel the smack of the cold Lake George air on my exposed face on a late October night. I could taste that freezing rain on my tongue during one of the most thrilling nights of the story. I am still thinking about all the characters, weeks after finishing the book, and hoping that Ellen and her friends return in a sequel. And yes, I have this feeling that if Georgia O'Keeffe and Anne White had had the opportunity to meet one another, they would have been best of friends.

Anne White's cozy small town mystery AN AFFINITY FOR MURDER delights by continuing her Lake George mystery series with a different sleuth, a journalist pursuing a story. Georgia O'Keefe's painting take center stage in this mystery.

Ellen Davies plans a feature story on the artist Georgia O'Keefe who spent her summers at Lake George. When she goes to visit an art critic Edward Maranville for background material, she discovers a fire and a body burned beyond recognition and a knife stuck in his back. As Ellen pursues the story, a group of paintings hidden in a locked closet vanish. Only the painting of the black iris remains behind but even that painting might become a dangerous possession. As Ellen researches her Georgia O'Keefe story, danger lurks in unexpected places as a murderer follows her path.

Anne White's AN AFFINITY FOR MURDER is a wonderful mystery read with a small town atmosphere. The reader sees another dimension to Lake George itself with her historical research as Anne White turns her focus on new characters as they explore part of the town's history and small town rumors. With the exploration of Georgia O'Keefe's work and her history in Lake George, Anne White adds a richness to this mystery through her sensuous descriptions of Georgia O'Keefe's flower paintings as well as discussions of the artist's technique, her relationship with the famous photographer Alfred Steiglitz and other corners of the art world. AN AFFINITY FOR MURDER is unforgettable --- a delight for mystery and art fans! As Anne White turns her vision to the art history of the Lake George town, the series grows organically, giving both newness and familiarity as the reader re-enters the wonderful community of Lake George.

As one who has admired Dr. George Schofield's mind and work for years, I am delighted that he has finally chosen to share his research and perspectives on this very significant life intersection. While reporting as a social scientist, Dr. Schofield most importantly shares his own life long journey and his courage to live at life's edges. This authentic voice permeates this work and one feels that one has a wise companion for the road ahead. This central message has never been more true: we are responsible for what happens; I find this a powerful and positive reminder.

"After 50" is a must read for anyone facing transitions in mid-life. Dr. Schofield's book is filled with insightful tools to help navigate this often unsettling transition. My favorite chapter is "A New Framework for Skill and Agility after 50", in which he sets forth a learning plan with exercises designed to examine our own story and abilities. It is an enjoyable read filled with substantial exercises to help us develop our own path and abilities.

George Schofield has provided an easy to follow pathway for each of us to determine our "readiness" for life after 50 and beyond. For many of us whose "eye on the ball" was so intense that we failed to notice that the magic line of middle-age had come and gone, Mr. Schofield provides us with tools to reassess ourselves and our lives while "in transit." As one who has long crossed that line, the advise I've provided others in preparation for the later stages of life is "expect to be surprised." No one can anticipate all of the financial, social and personal changes which arrive with aging (including the welcome as well as the unwelcome). "After 50 It's Up to Us" provides tools for each of us to develop the flexibility often required to effectively respond to the arrival of the unexpected. I highly recommend this book.

Somehow I always thought I would stay young, but suddenly 50 is looming on the horizon! George Schofield wisely and in a very readable format lays it out for us: now that we are here, what do we need to do to take care of ourselves, our families and the rest of our lives.?

Schofield is smart, practical and gave me a lot of think about. I would reccomend this book to all those babyboomers who never trusted anyone over 30, and are now in our 40's 50's and 60's! Yipes! How did this happen? Thanks! I'm buying it as gifts to give to my friends.

By 2015 some 77 million Americans will be fifty to sixty-nine years old and represent the first (and largest) generation in history to be so long lived and have to deal with the promises and problems of such an extended live span. In "After 50 It's Up To Us: Developing The Skills And Agility We'll Need", George H. Schofield presents the results of his own researches on the subject, which include numerous in-depth interviews with Americans in the 50 to 97 age bracket. The result is an articulate presentation offering invaluable insights and an accessible wisdom to the mind-opening possibilities of what an extended life span can offer senior citizens today. "After 50 It's Up To Us" stresses that planning is essential; the pace of change is accelerating; nobody's life happens entirely according to plan; thriving beyond the age of 50 requires development and application special abilities; agility in dealing with changes is a necessity; situations and companions can change as we age -- often without prior warning; aging cannot be ignored; mastering the skills of coping with and benefiting from the aging process is an essential and life-long necessity; living successfully beyond the age of 50 must be a customized plan specific to oneself. Of special note are Schofield's ten tips when negotiating through the unchartered territory of an extended life span. Simply stated, "After 50 It's Up To Us" should be considered mandatory reading for all seniors, and an important acquisition for community library Self Help/Self Improvement reference collections.

Much has been made of this. Sen. McCarthy had some things to say about the so-called good general. Eisenhower went ape, as they said then, and the establishment press pontificated---but these words, written by Forrest McDonald, are worth a view. Where was Marshall on Pearl Harbor day? Why did he consistently side with Mao? Read this for a decidely different view from the conventional one.

The controversial Senator's take on an establishment "saint".

In 1951,Senator Joseph R. McCarthy made a lengthy speech(constantly interrupted)in the Senate, highly critical of the military and diplomatic career of General George C. Marshall(and other "public servants")during the Roosevelt and Truman administrations. The reaction from many quarters to this speech was one of indignant outrage.
In questioning the wisdom-indeed the very loyalty to the US-of Marshall, revered and sanctified as the "Organizer of victory" during World War 2,even Senator McCarthy's allies(such as Republican party chief Robert Taft),felt Joe may have gone too far.
To this day,it is McCarthy's "attack" on Marshall-Army chief, roving diplomat for Truman,Secretary of State and Defence Secretary-which is pointed to as being the "red-hunting" Senator's greatest political crime. This book, published in 1951,is basically a condensed version of McCarthy's speech, with some additional material.
Whether McCarthy was wholly responsible for writing the speech/book-or if,as some believe,it is largely the work of one of his more academic assistants, such as J.B. Matthews,is debatable.
Be that as it may, whoever has(like me)been informed by our "media" for decades that McCarthy's public attack on Marshall was a prime example of Joe's unholy wickedness, may have to revise their opinion after reading this book. The case made against Marshall, his proteges and advisors,is carefully argued, well supported by evidence-and devastating!Drawing on published memoirs by the politicians, military figures and such who were involved in the momentous events in which Marshall played a leading part, one is staggered by the scope of the indictment against him,and sobered by the thought of the other horrors which would have occured if Marshall(and others discussed here)had managed to get their way all the time(instead of just a lot of the time!).
Here we see Marshall's murky role in the Japan/Pearl harbour debacle, his monomania about opening a "Second front"-at a time when neither the US or the Britain could have mounted an assault on Nazi held Western Europe without colossal casualties and inevitable failure, solely to take the pressure off Stalin's forces in Russia(Stalin having been until very recently Hitler's ally and fellow plunderer of Europe);his sabotaging of the efforts of Churchill and others who were trying to prevent Russia occupying swathes of eastern europe and taking Berlin;his moves to see that Russia was brought into the war in the east(a strengthening of Stalin's hand quite unnecessary to the Allied war on Japan);his insistence on there being a land invasion of Japan(then defeated militarily, without supplies-as its Navy had gone-and suing for peace with the Allies)which would have seen massive needless loss of life among Allied servicemen;his role in ensuring Stalin got the territory he craved during behind the scenes manoevering at the big conferences like Tehran and Yalta;his willingness to forward the cause of Mao and his communist rebels at the expense of the Nationalist regime which led to decades of the Chairman's gory incompetent rule over China(turning it into an impoverished charnel house).
Anyone reading the indictment here will probably begin to wonder how on earth Marshall gained such a reputation as a sagacious guardian of the US and the free world's interests, and why he was thought of so highly by clever political operators like FDR,Truman and Eisenhower. Is this the story of a naive serial blunderer, whose errors were somehow turned into epics of reasoned statesmanship by a fawning gullible left/liberal media and political establishment-or were all these activities(which promoted the aims and ends of Stalin)coldly calculated and deliberate. We have the evidence from the previously secret US and Soviet intelligence archives that the infiltration into the power structure of the US by Soviet agents and fellow travelling allies was on a quite breathtaking scale in the 30's and 40's.Much more still remains locked in the archives of the Soviet intelligence services. There is uncontrovertable evidence that many of those previously declared by the "liberal consensus" to have been innocent victims of unscrupulous political witch hunters like McCarthy and the Un-American Activities Committee-from Alger Hiss and Harry Dexter White to the Rosenbergs-were in fact guilty as charged all along.Joe McCarthy came close to calling Marshall a traitor.Dwight Eisenhower, who coasted to prominence on Marshall's coat-tails,never forgave McCarthy for attacking his old mentor-it was one of the reasons why,as President,Ike finally joined the pack who were out to get the Junior Senator from Wisconsin, and helped destroy him politically during the 1954 Army Hearings and their aftermath.
Reading this book will help any impartial reader decide who was right about George Catlett Marshall.

Senator Joseph McCarthy was a contemporary of General George Marshall (the WWII U.S. military officer who worked closely with President Roosevelt), both having lived through the events that are described in this book, so this is a fascinating, absorbing first-person account of that history and those times. Senator McCarthy certainly lives up to his "no holds barred" reputation for directness and controversy in this book. Highly recommended!

This small tome, expanding upon his speech in the Senate, provides a wealth of documented information regarding General Marshall and the deleterious effects his mistaken eforts have wrought on the US and the enslaved citizens of China.

A modern history of this subject with all the released information from the Venona files and the Soviet Union folded in would only enhance McCarthy's prescience in writing this book.

This book does not charge Marshall with being a spy, nor a Soviet agent, nor a communist, nor a fellow traveler, but whatever leanings Marshall had and how he was influenced by the Communists and American Traitors that were in charge of formulating and influencing the US's foreign policies, especially in the far east, are strongly inferred in this book.

This is a well written, well argued, and well documented book, that almost turns into a page turner and a one night read.

Explains a great deal

Review Date: 2005-03-14
In evaluating Senator McCarthy's book, I will compare the situation he analyzed with another more well-known situation.

From reading William Shirer's book "Rise and Fall of the Third Reich" I became aware that Neville Chamberlain helped precipitate World War 2 when he went to Munich. There, he appeased Hitler by allowing him to take chunks of Czechoslovakia and incorporate them into Germany, without a fight. Czechoslovakia was not even invited to these "negotiations." The situation was hopeless for that country; although it was well-armed and could have fought back Germany, the citizens capitulated and within a few weeks the entire country became engulfed by Germany. But that is all that Chamberlain did to encourage Germany into invading Czechoslovakia. To think that Chamberlain was a Nazi or a Nazi sympathizer might be overreacting.

Now, imagine that prior to Chamberlain coming to Munich, Germany was already invading Czechoslovakia by force. Not only that, but the Czechoslovak forces were steadily beating back the German army from the Sudeten regions. Suppose now, at the urging of Hitler, Chamberlain was to demand that the Czechoslovak forces cease-fire before taking back their lost territory, in the interests of "peace." Suppose that while assuring the British people, who wanted arms to be brought to Czechoslovakia, the arms were mysteriously sabotaged while being transported to Czechoslovakia in the care of Chamberlain. Suppose further that Chamberlain demanded that Czechoslovakia "reform" their government and hold elections, and allow the Nazis to be elected into their government positions, in the interest of "democracy." And that if they refused to comply, Chamberlain was going to withdraw British troops from, and discontinue aid to Czechoslovakia. Suppose that the Czechoslovaks conceded and ceased-fire but still this was not good enough for Chamberlain, who before returning to Britain, withdrew aid and troops, and made the statement, "With a stroke of the pen, I now disarm 39 divisions of the Czechoslovak army." Would you think that Chamberlain was a Nazi, had he committed these actions? Even if the man was considered by most of your countrymen to be a "war hero?"

In the previous paragraph, replace "Chamberlain" with "George Marshall," "Hitler" with "Chou En-Lai," "Munich" with "Yenan," "Germany" with "Russia and Red China," "Nazi" with "Communist" "Czechoslovakia" with "Free China," "Sudeten" with "Manchuria" and "British" with "American," and you get the idea, of what happened to China prior to it's fall to the Communists shortly after world war 2. Now we are faced with another question.

If you are yet undecided as to the answer of that question, then I suggest you read McCarthy's book, which is actually a transcription of a speech he made in the Senate. In spite of the media reaction to McCarthy and his speech, in the speech, and hence this book, much evidence is provided, and conclusions presented in a calm, objective manner.

A special section at the end of the book documents media reaction to the speech. Much vitriol was flung at McCarthy by editors of various newspapers. Much of the commentary demonstrated a complete lack of understanding of what McCarthy said, or worse.

It is a great injustice that Marshall is still considered to be a "war hero," when it is quite apparent that he committed numerous "errors," even prior to his shenanigans in China. The systematic nature of his errors, always in favor of the reds, explains a great deal why China is still communist today, and unlike Japan, has a government which is hostile to the US and may become increasingly so in the next several years.

This book is one that deserves a second read almost as soon as one finishes it the first time. It's not an easy story by no account. Its rude and as far as comic's go a very real overview of America in a long forgotten time. The early 60's is caught exactly as it was with none of the kindness that one expects. The words are crude as I said but the story will make you look at yourself. This is a worthy book that belongs with The Watchman by Moore as required reading for graphic comic readers.

John Ridley et. al. have offered an interesting, entertaining, and thought-provoking metaphorical vision of what heroes, super or otherwise, can teach us about ourselves. Set in the era of the Cold War, a team of "very familiar heroes" tackle problems "from beyond our world" and, eventually, address those at the core of our humanity. I read this graphic novel and then passed it off to my 15-year-old son and a very interesting discussion ensued. You can't do much better than that with any novel.

It's the early 1960s, and the United States is nervous. Communism is spreading, the Cold War is in full swing, and Russia has put a man in space and missiles in Cuba. On the home front, racial tensions threaten to tear the country apart. It's a time for heroes, and luckily America has some -- a few genuine superpowers mixed with the products of genetic labwork and scientific trickery.

But they're far too valuable as public icons to risk in actual combat with dangerous villains, so -- apart from the occasional mugger or street thug -- the Civil Defense Corps engages in violent, newsmaking battles with ... actors. Yes, actors. The government has created villains to provide foils for the CDC, giving the credulous public something to cheer for. After all, there's no reason to worry about Russia when the likes of Phobos, Freya, Ole Miss, Old Glory and Amber Waves are here to protect us.

And then things start to go wrong. A hero dies. An inconvenient spouse is murdered. A killer is let loose, but fails to follow his programming. And an accidental unmasking reveals a popular new hero to be "colored" -- and America isn't ready for that shocking truth.

Nor, it turns out, are many of the other heroes.

"The American Way" is a tense, gripping story set in a volatile time. Following in the gilded footsteps of Alan Moore's classic "The Watchmen," writer John Ridley gives us heroes who suffer the same failings and bigotries as the "normal" people around them. Some will rise above those failings, while others, of course, will surrender to them.

Destined to be a classic, "The American Way" is an exciting, sometimes heartbreaking tale.

It is the Cold War and America has a team of super heroes to help protect justice and the American Way. An ad man who lost his job due to bad timing has been recruited to work for the government and handle PR for the super team. It is then that he learns that while the heroes do exist their reputation is false. The minor crime they stop is real but all of the super-villain battles are carefully scripted and acted out. But as tensions build between America and Russia, America is also being subjected to the buildup of racial tensions between blacks and whites. That is when the ad man comes up with the idea of creating a black super hero. He will be masked at first to win the trust of the country and then it will be revealed that he is black.

But an accident reveals the secret too soon and racial tension on the team goes through the roof. How can the situation be diffused? Will extreme sanction be required for all the super heroes? Is there any action that will not make matters worse? All these questions and more make up this fascinating story. Set against real-world events this is a gripping tale of a volatile period in America's history. An interesting new spin on the super hero story but with better grounding in reality than most. Definitely one for fans who like some intelligence in their comics. Check it out.

Roger¿s Journals Finally Go Snap, Crackle & Pop

No one lived through more extraordinary adventures than Major Robert Rogers: they were bone-chilling, hair-raising. But Rogers understates them. Spine-tingling events historians know-from others who were present-that Rogers lived through he skipped over. Once he jumped twelve feet into a river to escape capture by French and Indians and never even mentioned it. Perhaps Rogers was a genuinely modest man. Perhaps his "adventures" were scarey memories he didn't wish to revisit. Perhaps it was bad judgment mixed with a phlegmatic mind. Low key or not, Roger's journals are standard reading for history buffs of the French and Indian War. Todish and Zaboly imminently enhance Roger's accounts without altering them, to the point readers glimpse an exceptional man. Todish indents his annotations in the middle of the narrative at to flesh out details of time, place, and historical significance. His scholarship is first rate: insertions are by others who were present, or are comments from earlier Rogers scholars. His co-author, Zaboly, takes great care to make the his illustrations historically accurate in lieu of setting, clothing, and military accouterments. Drawings are a page or two pages wide, with an accompanying page of explanation of included details. These chosen details are themselves footnoted to their museum source. If one decides to read Roger's journals, read them in this edition.

A creation of the two greatest experts on Robert Rogers and his Rangers, this book is a must for all American history buffs. Not only is Rogers' own journal reproduced, but Todish and Zaboly both contribute fascinating and insightful introductions. If there is any more to be learned about Rogers, it will be found in Zaboly's forthcoming full-scale biography. His numerous full page highly detailed illustrations add immeasurably to this work's appeal. For those who are interested in the period, to miss this volume would be a sin.

This edition of the _Journals of Major Robert Rogers_ is really three books in one, and that amounts to a major treat for anyone even remotely interested in the struggle for colonial America's frontier.
Major Robert Rogers was one of early America's greatest frontier soldiers, and the feats performed by Rogers' Rangers are the stuff of legend. Despite the self-serving nature of Rogers' memoirs (and whose memoirs are not self-serving?), this work remains an essential source on the French and Indian War.
The annotations supplied by editor Timothy J. Todish, a longtime Rogers' Rangers reenactor and a widely published student of 18th and 19th century American military history, greatly increase the value of this edition. Todish provides the kind of insights, additional information, and corrections that can come only from someone who is thoroughly familiar with the subject.
The book's crowning touch comes from the twenty-two illustrations by Gary S. Zaboly, an accomplished historical artist whose knowledge of Robert Rogers and his times is unmatched by anyone working in the field today. Zaboly wrote short essays explaining each one of his illustrations, along with an authoritative, 31-page examination of the uniforms worn by Rogers' Rangers.
By combining the talents of Rogers, Todish, and Zaboly, this handsome volume serves as a window opening on some of the most harrowing and thrilling episodes in American history. This book is a must for anyone interested in colonial America, the Eastern Woodland Indians, and the French and Indian War.

I read this book years ago while I was just a teenager. Just today I turned 30. Since the time I was a young teenager I have had a burden to help troubled children. The book only fueled my desire to work with children. I am also a devout Christian and know the tremendous power that prayer can bring into one's life. It is 2:32am where I am at and although it has been over 15 years since I read this book, I woke up after several dreams tonight with George Mueller's life on my mind. I can't rest until I know even more about George Mueller's life. I need direction in the way that I am to serve. The book is that powerful. More importantly, the testimony of Mr. Mueller's faith and dedication have inspired me to commit my life to the service of God. I hope you are inspired as well.

A testimony to the power of God.

George Mueller's life's work was to have G-d glorified, by living a life of total dependance on Him. One of Mr. Mueller's chief rules was never to tell people the needs of the orphanages, but only to ask G-d for help. This book is a collection of exerpts, a kind of journal, that describes the wonderful ways in which God did indeed answer Mr. Mueller's prayers by providing for thousands of orphans often on a meal to meal basis for over 40 years! The powerful ways that G-d provided for each need will touch every reader's heart. It will give encouragement to fellow Christians and challenge the skeptical. I have never read a more powerful account of Jesus' faithfulness to His children and would strongly reccomend this book to all people.

This book will encourage your Christian prayer life.

This book is a spiritual autobiography of a man who ran multiple orphanages and a school by solely trusting in God to provide the support. George Mueller never asked any individual for money. This book will encourage the believer to place all of your cares and burdens on the Lord. The reader will be challenged to seek after God for who He is and not for what He gives. It will help take your prayer life to a new level. You can easily read it in two or three sittings.

As we share Shiner's nostalgia, we rediscover Aaron, Mays, McCovey, Mantle, and Gibson, old heros, old memories. Baseballs Greatest Players, The Saga Continues is more than a Who's Who of baseball, it's a way of life, a catalog of events, a collection of memories. As Shiner reveals the greatest players, we, who are old enough to remember, bask in their glory and relive our own unachieved ambitions.

But Shiner does more than take us back, he bundles the past with the present and into the future, tyingthe memories together forever in our minds. McGuire's record-setting season rekindles other home run hitters: Roger Maris, Reggie Jackson, Mickey Mantle, even Babe Ruth. We connect to the present, even anticipate the future. McGuire's 70 home run season triggers a vision of people diving into San Francisco Bay to retrieve the balls Barry Bonds his in 2001, the year he surpassed McGuire's record.

Baseball fans will love this book, others will like it. It's clearly, simply, and accurately presented and guaranteed to stir a memory or two.

It's hard not to enjoy this well written, easily readable book on baseball's best players of the past 50 years. Lively anecdotes plus comprehensive (but not boring) analysis shows exactly why these are the best players of the game. I got a kick out of remembering a lot of things I had almost forgotten, like just how good Bob Gibson was. Some of the facts are amazing, like that in the last two years Sandy Koufax pitched, there were 8 games where the Dodgers only scored one run for him--but he won 4 of them. This book also avoids wallowing in sex and drug garbage. It's a baseball book, not National Enquirer. Balanced, interesting, a really solid piece of work.

One For The Books

With the writing of Baseball's Greatest Players, author David Shiner takes a serious risk. The only thing a sports fan loves more than making a "greatest list" is arguing voluably about why the other guy's list is WRONG! One read of this book will shut down most any other greatest list's chances, and it does so with style, wit, and a healthy dose of readable fact.

In its text, Shiner's book fulfils both the needs of casual fan's interest and the SABR-members desire for solid, quantifiable statistical evidence. But it goes beyond just fact and storytelling to get to the intangibles that separate the players truly great between the white lines from those whose personality and dedication supported not just their teams, but the game itself.

Baseball, more than any other sport (though Canadian hockey fans will rightly take exception to this) carries its past with it. This continuity, this love of the game that both transcends and unites generations is served well by Shiner's writing. Buy Baseball's Greatest Players, and take it to a sports bar near you. You won't go wrong.

What an enjoyable book! I loved it. Great short biographies of the greatest baseball players from the past 50 years. For the serious baseball fan or the novice (or anyone who wants to know the story behind legendary players like Mantle and Mays, or why Ricky Henderson really IS one of the greatest players ever). Whether you are ten or eighty, this book is fun, interesting, and helps explain why millions love baseball--and their heroes! Makes a great gift for kids or adults. Exciting stories, well written.

Mr. Thatcher has a wonderful way of communicating more than sights and sounds that goes to the heart and soul of the subject offered. Obviously, Thatcher is a man of rich life experiences and a high level of respect for life. His educated presentation is meaningful to readers (and beach walkers) of all ages. For a land-bound Arkansas boy, BEACH WALKS opens new vistas of nature and beauty that I have not experienced as a way of life but only in passing on too-quick vacations. But Thatcher's introspection transcends the Coastal life to all who are one with God and nature.

Its essence is universal, transcending time and place.

Beach Walks is more than a collection of thoughts inspired by years of beach walking the Mississippi Gulf Coast by an observant, curious and perceptive beach walker. These thoughts, often lyrical, are enhanced with various quotations from Psalms to Mae West and Stalin, and frequently include fascinating scientific and historical facts, as well as entertaining trivia. Though this book will be especially meaningful to those familiar to the Gulf Coast, its essence is universal, transcending time and place.

A small, beautifully written treasure of daily reflections.
