"This volume gathers an assortment of letters, works, illustrations, and photographs--some previously unpublished. In his superb introduction, Maurer (Spanish, Boston Univ.) re-creates and probes this intense friendship, bringing the reader into the wondrous and exciting world of two extraordinary young men. Written between 1925 and 1936, the letters offer intimate glimpses of this friendship and of the artistic insights of two of the dominant artistic figures of the past century. [...] Thoughtfully and sensitively conceived, this is an intellectually sound and compelling volume." F. Colecchia, CHOICE 9/05

Fun Family Centered Activities

For 3 years I have used this book as homework. Every student gets a notebook at the beginning of the year. We talk about using the front and back of each sheet and even completing more than 1 assignment on a sheet. Every month they are given a new calendar. They must complete 3 out 5 activities a week and turn it in by Friday.
Within a couple of months most of my class completes the homework by themselves and just ask their parents to look it over. On some of the more involved projects, the parents help out.
My objective with homework in the second grade is to teach responsibility. The assignments are fun and easy which makes it easy for children to become responsible for completing the work and turning it in. This is important because I do not always have children with parents able to help them. With this book I have never had any child or parent say "It's too hard," or, "We didn't understand."
I love this book. I wish they made it for 4th grade...

I used to believe the standard myths of US society, about how we are the champions of democracy and the greatest country in the world. The evidence was that so many people were coming here to enjoy our greatness. As it turns out, the story is a little more complicated and a lot less flattering than the usual narrative. My political perspectives started to change when I met an immigrant from El Salvador. He was a soldier in El Salvador's brutal government military, which was funded by, and served as a proxy for, the US empire.
The societies of El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua have been devastated by decades of US intervention that has included overthrows, political assassinations, genocide of indigenous people, oppression of labor and peasant organizers, embargos, neoliberal corporatism and so forth. Given all of this injustice, I think it's great that some Central Americans are coming to the U.S. and Canada and are finding a way to survive, some are even prospering. I consider it to be a sort of war "reparations," a debt that the U.S. owes to Central American people.
Turning the Tide: U.S. Intervention in Central America and the Struggle for Peace

If the immigrant-bashers were to listen to the stories of the people they are demonizing, I believe they'd lose a lot of their resentful attitudes. Not only should U.S. citizens feel shame over their country's relations toward Latin America, we should feel gratitude over the many economic and cultural contributions Latin Americans are making towards our country. "Seeking Refuge" does a wonderful job of filling that gap in our understanding of why it is Central Americans are coming here. We need to see immigration as the humanitarian crisis that it often is, a crisis that has been exacerbated by policies created in D.C. and on Wall Street - ie, the passage of NAFTA.
It is often pointed out that Mexico is even more harsh toward Central American immigrants than the U.S. is. While that is true, we should keep in mind that Mexico is carrying out policies that the U.S. pressures for. National Geographic - Wetback: The Undocumented Documentary
In this era of the criminalization of economic refugees, the building of more detention centers and a hi-tech wall (a subsidy to war profiteers like Lockheed Martin and Boeing), "Seeking Refuge" demands that U.S. citizens look themselves in the mirror, and take responsibility for the welfare of our brothers and sisters in Central America.

This book is of invaluable information! My child had many febrile seizures and this book covered a whole section on this topic. It covers the characteristics, risk factors for developing epilepsy, medications and more simply for febrile convulsions alone. It covers 20 in depth chapters of all types of infant and childhood seizures and convulsions, treatment, etc. This book helped reduce some of the mystery of "doctor talk" and helped me to understand in a layperson's terms.

Publisher, editor, radio personality, and an influential figure in the Chicano Movement of the 1960s & 70s, Cecilio Garcia-Camarillo was also a bi-lingual poet of considerable expertise and accomplishment. Selected Poetry brings together under a single cover some of the best of what he has created. 10.: a young chick/in tight jeans/with a body getting soft/and blowing out/talks about her abortions//another in a light sweater/is already turning purple from the cold/she shivers like a maniac/and talks to the crowd about her husband/and his brother/having a fist-fight over the weekend//a short lady with an eagle nose/surrounded by wrinkles talks about the riot/of last week and how she almost got trampled/and how nobody gives a damn about the old.

For those of us interested in the study of sexually transmitted infections, this book provides a detailed overview of infections and trends in the US and in China. It also highlights the history of infection in both the US and China including the past and present incidence in China--especially the information about the eradication of the disease under Mao. A very interesting and quick read for all social scientists!!

Lionel Garcia's A SHROUD IN THE FAMILY is a strange and very funny book. Throughout the book, characters are crossing boundaries-- from myth into reality, the past into the present, the Hispanic Texas into the Anglo Texas-- and Garcia keeps it all barrelling forward until the comic, catastrophic ending. A great book by a great, if somewhat neglected, author.

Here is a real treat for hardcore Marquez fans, it's a booklong, albeit a short book, but a nonetheless booklong interview with the man himself. And, boys and girls, it is beautiful. Stellar. I thought there was no way I could like this little nonfictionthing as well as his similarly sized short fiction or bigger novels, but the universe proved me wrong once again, and I did. The best part of the whole thing is when he talks about, and he's totally serious here, not being able to write without yellow flowers in the room. The guy is a nut. But it's beautiful, you can't help loving it even as you laugh at it. Just a great little book.

Written in 3 languages (English/Indonesian/Spanish) this coffee-table style book may only cover a relatively brief period in Maluku's history, but manages to bring together old drawings and maps with some beautiful colour photos of Ternate and Tidore.
The photos put an emphasis on old colonial forts, many of which have in the meantime been sadly "restored" in concrete.
Unfortunately being published in Indonesia it is likely to be hard to find.

I loved this book! It's a great read for all ages, with an excellent life lesson regarding love, loyalty and faithfulness. A girl baby is born in the pre-history days with two strikes against her: being female and having a deformity. She is saved from destruction and hidden from the tribe by her grandmother, who loves, protects and teaches her. With the companionship of both her grandmother and her brother, she overcomes formidable obstacles. Ann O'Neal Garcia has created believable characters in a story that is easy to move into. This tale begs for a sequel. Read it.
