Great introduction to cosmology

The science of cosmology gives a quantitative foundation to our views about the universe. A Short History of the Universe explains in layman's terms and with excellent pictures how our theories of the structure of the universe have evolved, thus feeding the areas of philosophy and religion. What do we mean if we say that the universe has limits, but is also infinite? Why is it that the sun is considered to be halfway through its lifetime? How can the universe be expanding in every direction that we look when the earth is not at the center of the universe? These sorts of questions are answered--and answered well. If you have curiosity about how the heavens are studied, this book is definitely worth your time.

This is the story of Nona Freeman's (the author) mother, Carrie Eastridge. How she found God and served Him come what may. Through poverty, loss of loved ones, poor health and opposition, she did a mighty work for God preaching, starting churches and ministering to those in need of God's help. Sister Eastridge was a woman of great faith, love for God, love for souls and a desire to do a work for the Kingdom of God.

Shoutin' on the Hills is a very interesting and enjoyable read. Definitely a hard one to put down.

I checked this book out from the library for my 20 month-old and she really likes it. I probably like it more than she does because there is a lot of humor only a parent could appreciate. The scenes of the kids sleeping upside-down, sleeping in a pile of couch cushions or sleeping rolled up in a rug are great. I also like the kid kicking back with a frog in a pond. Very creative writing and illustrations. I'll be looking for more by this author and illustrator.

This guide is really great. I used it on a visit to Massachusetts, Maine and Vermont, the directions are very clear and the shops featured are wonderful. I recommend this book highly for a nice way to find the off the beaten path places. My personal favorites were in Georgetown and Rowely Mass and Bennington Vermont. will take it to New Hampshire next!!!!

What a fun book. I was a polical science major, and expected to be in way over my head with matters relating to, well, real science. Luckily I was not. I picked it up after reading through the nifty stuff on the Freeman Lab site at UC Berkeley. I figured I ought to write up a little somethin' since the other reivew seems as if it's trying to scare people off.

That said, it was hard to tell who the intended audience of the book was. It wasn't for people with any sort of bio backgrounds, as he took the time to explain what hemoglobin was. But he also expected a pretty thorough understanding of epimistological models and how synapses function.

So I'm guessing cog-sci types. Neurology people who never took a philosophy class and are willing to think outside the box might get something out of it, as would philosophy kids who neglected their bio. I think most AI people would find some of it old hat, but a fun read none the less.

Traditional neural networks get pretty skewered. But skewering neural networks has become a lot more popular in the last five years since this book was published, I suppose, so hey. And Freeman does it a lot more eloquently than most.

Now, for the rest of us: As I said, I went into this book knowing relitively little. Which, in retrospect, was good. It was an epiphany. Last time I felt that way was reading Weber's "Prodestant Ethic..." when I was a freshman. As if the wool was being lifted from my eyes.

Knowing nothing about the field I can't really judge how revolutionary or archetypical the theories presented are. But if you know nothing about the field and just want some cerebral stimulation to get you excited about the topic, this is the place to be.

Great solutions manual

Written by the author, versus some 'hired hand' to do the problem-solving, this is a very useful guide. Solutions are not given for all the problems, but if you look at the methodology and approach taken to the ones that are included, it will be easier and you will learn more. Most of the in-text problems are challenging; when the numbers don't work out, this is a good source to turn.

Excellent short book addressing sleep research pre-1980
Helpful Votes: 4 out of 4 total.
Review Date: 2003-03-08
This is an excellent book that sleep researchers, clinicians, health care professionals and the public can rely upon to learn about earlier times in sleep research and sleep medicine. It is written in a very engaging format, provides enough detail about "the basics" (for its time) and Dr. Dement shares many interesting stories about earlier projects. A very delightful short read which ought to remain part of the important history of sleep medicine. Thumbs up!

A Song Of Faith And Hope: The Life Of Frankie Muse Freeman is the fascinating memoir of a most remarkable African-American woman, who grew up in the Jim Crow era South and, upset at the injustice that surrounded her every day, became an effective St. Louis civil rights attorney who dedicated her personal and professional life to improving justice and equality for all, and which eventually earned her the distinction of being the first woman to be appointed to the U.S. Commission of Civil Rights. A stirring portrayal and highly recommended reading, A Song Of Faith And Hope is an invaluable contribution to personal and academic Black Studies collections.
