Superb integration of mantric meditation and Christian Theology
Helpful Votes: 3 out of 4 total.

This is an excellent book on many levels. It is one of the most sucessful integrations of meditation and Christian theology. The essays show keen insight into modern life and spirituality. I would put this book in an elite group of modern spiritual classics such as "Zen Mind, Beginner's Mind," "The Kingdom Within" by John Sanford, and some of the works of Thomas Merton. This book is billed as a development of themes from Freeman's earlier work, "Light Within". However, in my opinion, "The Selfless Self" is far superior to Light Within---it's in another league altogether. I even believe this book is superior to any of John Main's works, which are classics of Christian meditation in their own right. (I'm sure Freeman would disagree with this statement, as John Main was his teacher and the founder of the World Community of Christian Meditation, which Freeman now leads). This is the kind of book you can read over and over again through the years, and continue to see it as fresh and insightful. Laurence Freeman's opus is uniformly of high quality, but he really outdid himself with this work.

Setting the record straight.

(The numerical rating above is required by the new Amazon format. It is offensive to this reviewer and explicitly disavowed.)

Joe Rosenthal's famous photo of the (second) flag-raising on Suribachi was such a singularly powerful allegorical image that it became a sort of Rorschach Test of attitudes, with viewers assigning values to it that have had more to do with their own prejudices that the event itself.

Albee and Freeman carefully reexamine the history and controversy to show that while the "Sands of Iwo Jima" movie version of history is not accurate, accusations of staging the famous photo are baseless and a slander on Rosenthal, a modest and honest man.

With maps, bibliography, index, and a remarkable series of photos with analysis, which when carefully examined unmistakably support the author's narrative of the events, and in no way disparage the courage of the men on that bleak and windswept mountaintop.

Shaping Our Future

Review Date: 2006-03-08
Over one thousand people gathered in St. Louis in the summer of 1993 for the Shaping Our Future symposium. Their purpose in gathering was to discuss the structure and mission of the Episcopal Church for the twenty-first century, and to identify ways of changing that structure if the church's mission is impeded by it. Ninety-three dioceses and five nations were represented, and those invited to present papers included people from varying aspects of the church's life and ministry. The papers included in this volume are offered to the church for ongoing reflection and prayer as its questions raised at the symposium and to encourage the spread of the kingdom of God.

I am a lay reader of this particular text, but still found it a very useful critical analysis of Sheldrake's theories. To gain a thorough understanding of Sheldrake's views, there is nothing more helpful than to examine Sheldrake's study being scrutinized by his peers. I would recommend this text to anyone who wants to gain a fuller understanding of Sheldrake's methodology and conclusions and the profound implications they have for the entire realm of science.

Great introduction to cosmology
Helpful Votes: 12 out of 13 total.
Review Date: 2000-10-03
The science of cosmology gives a quantitative foundation to our views about the universe. A Short History of the Universe explains in layman's terms and with excellent pictures how our theories of the structure of the universe have evolved, thus feeding the areas of philosophy and religion. What do we mean if we say that the universe has limits, but is also infinite? Why is it that the sun is considered to be halfway through its lifetime? How can the universe be expanding in every direction that we look when the earth is not at the center of the universe? These sorts of questions are answered--and answered well. If you have curiosity about how the heavens are studied, this book is definitely worth your time.

Great book.

This is the story of Nona Freeman's (the author) mother, Carrie Eastridge. How she found God and served Him come what may. Through poverty, loss of loved ones, poor health and opposition, she did a mighty work for God preaching, starting churches and ministering to those in need of God's help. Sister Eastridge was a woman of great faith, love for God, love for souls and a desire to do a work for the Kingdom of God.

Shoutin' on the Hills is a very interesting and enjoyable read. Definitely a hard one to put down.

I checked this book out from the library for my 20 month-old and she really likes it. I probably like it more than she does because there is a lot of humor only a parent could appreciate. The scenes of the kids sleeping upside-down, sleeping in a pile of couch cushions or sleeping rolled up in a rug are great. I also like the kid kicking back with a frog in a pond. Very creative writing and illustrations. I'll be looking for more by this author and illustrator.

This guide is really great. I used it on a visit to Massachusetts, Maine and Vermont, the directions are very clear and the shops featured are wonderful. I recommend this book highly for a nice way to find the off the beaten path places. My personal favorites were in Georgetown and Rowely Mass and Bennington Vermont. will take it to New Hampshire next!!!!
