This book is a necessity for any scienctist or philosopher. It is full of some of the best scientific quotes and quips I have ever read, spanning the centuries of scientific conjecture- and they are logically categorized for quick reference. This book contains quotes relating to every area or aspect of science, and is a source of wisdom and inspiration. Makes a great gift too!

My favorite volume in over the 50+ volumes i have in this series. I read my first one so much i bought a second! This is Scientific American at its finest, easy to read, easy to understand, yet packed with science, information, and it brings the history of science of the sun and earth to life.

One could easily design a full semester class around this book, and it would teach better than any science curriculum on the subject I've seen.

You will not be disappointed with this book!

Possibly the Greatest of the History Plays.
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2006-07-18
"Henry V" and "Richard III" seem to be Shakespeare's most popular and famous history plays. But I myself have always leaned towards this one. The play starts with the wedding of King Henry VI and Queen Margaret. At this point in the game, France has gained the upper hand. But England still controls Calais, Anjou, Maine, Normady, and some areas around Bordeaux. Well, th virtuous Gloucester (and only remaining son of King Henry IV) is shocked along with some others that Anjou and Maine will have to be returned to France as well. This angers York and he thinks Henry VI's questionable marriage amongst other things is just cause to aim for the crown. (In history, Richard was actually VERY loyal to King Henry VI, even when situations practically invited him to seize the crown. Eventually, he was forced somewhat by Margaret's actions to take up arms.) Later, we see that Gloucester's wife has her eyes on the crown as well. Meanwhile, Margaret is growing weary of King Henry VI, and her affair with Suffolk is becoming more prevalent. Act one ends with a dramatic scene of Pagan Prophecies and Lady Gloucester's arrest. Act 2 begins with the comical scene of someone claiming a false miracle. Though the comedy breaks when Gloucester learns of his wife's treason. York gathers his allies Salisbury and Warwick and plans his move to seize the crown. In one of his stronger moments, King Henry VI orders the execution of those who plotted against him. Though he is smart and knows that the virtuous Gloucester's wife must be treated a bit more gently. So he makes her do public penance and banishes her. Gloucester bids a sorrowful farewell to his banished wife, and must stand trial himself. We also learn that all of England's French territory is lost. (Though this is not 100 % true. England still held Calais, and would continue to do so through the reigns of Edward IV, Edward V, Richard III, Henry VII, Henry VIII, and Edward VI.) Moving on, York, Somerset, the Cardinal, Suffolk, and Queen Margaret all work to bring Gloucester down. He defends himself with dignity, but is arrested. Soon afterwards, Glouceter is pronounced dead. True King Henry VI is often rebuked for fainting here, but he actually displays one of his finer moments. He banishes the vile Suffolk for the murder and does not back down even when Margaret in a deceptive manner says Suffolk is innocent. Perhaps one of the greatest scenes is 3.3 where the Cardinal goes insane (quite possibly guilt over Gloucester). In this brief scene, the cardinal's insanity fills us with horror, and the scene where Henry VI forgives him is actually very touching: 'Forbear to judge, for we are sinners all.' Act 4 is dominated mostly by the rebel Jack Cade. He has launched an uprising against the king, and he is actually quite theatrical and offers some comical moments. Well, he gets quite far, but is finally defeated by Buckingham and Clifford. Cade tries to escape, but is killed by Iden. Onto the final act. having left for Ireland, York returns in arms, but decides to back off for the time being, when Buckingham insists that Henry VI has met York's demand and imprisoned Somerset. This proves not to be, and Yort takes up arms. His sons (the eventual King Edward IV and King Richard III) appear and the war begins. York does gain the advantage here, but things are far from over. King Henry VI and Margaret escape, and the scene where Young Clifford discovers his father (killed By York) and gives his soliloquy of revenge is a scene that combines sorrow, rage, hate, and beauty ever so well.

A remarkable and rambunctuous classic narrative
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 2 total.

Did the acclaimed and immortal playwright William Shakespeare write novels? Two professional linguists of the University of Washington offer a wealth of compelling evidence to suggest that he did, including the "Freeman Jones" novel. Secret Shakespeare's Adventures of Freeman Jones contains the text of the novel itself, an essay concerning forensic evidence pointing to Shakespeare as the text's author, footnotes expounding upon wordplay, and other insights into a remarkable and rambunctuous classic narrative. Regardless of the reader's final conclusions concerning the novel's authorship, Secret Shakespeare's Adventures Of Freeman Jones is a rousing read; the passage of centuries have not dimmed the spirit of high excitement, and the notes allow for the full appreciation of linguistic nuances. Recommended reading for Shakespeare fans and students, as well as library literature collections.

Freeman Dyson's Garden
Helpful Votes: 14 out of 14 total.
Review Date: 1998-07-26
Some time ago the great physicist Chen Ning Yang had the brilliant idea of including, in a book of his selected works, his own comments on the papers and on the circumstances of their making. The idea was very successful, and gives birth now to this wonderful volume "Selected Papers of Freeman Dyson". The Dyson collection is a joy to read (he is a fine writer, both sacred and profane) not only by the quality, but also by the variety of his scientific production (only his scientific works are included). Perhaps you don't know, but, before becoming a physicist, Dyson had made his mark in mathematics, when still a student, to the point that, when he arrived at Cornell to study under Bethe, he was preceded by a recommendation letter written by Littlewood telling that he (Dyson) "is the best mathematician in England".Accordingly, the first papers of the collection are mathematical. Then comes the series of papers on quantum field theory which made his nam! e in physics. At a comment we learn the circumnstances under which it became possible for him to coalesce into one paper the three extant versions of QED, Schwinger's, Feynman's and Tomonaga's, which looked like different theories. The great paper "The Radiation Theories of Tomonaga, Schwinger, and Feynman" and a set of lecture notes based on it taught the new wisdom in QED to generations of physicists. Concerning physics I think, however, that his greatest work is the series of papers which proved the stability of matter tied by Coulomb interaction, which, besides its enormous intrinsic value, opened a new area of theoretical physics, where "hard analysis" was crucial, and that, perhaps, culminated with the paper of Lieb-Thirring (Lieb writes a beautiful Foreword for the volume). To give you a taste, the Contents include papers on Number Theory, Analysis, Topology, General Mathematics (including a paper beautifully entitled "A Walk Through Ramanujan's! Garden"), Quantum Electrodynamics, Field Theory (of J! ost-Lehman-Dyson fame), Statistical Mechanics, Random Matrices, Stability of Matter, Gravitation, Variation of the Fundamental Constants (triggered by Dirac's conjecture on the abnormally small size of the gravitational coupling constant), Scattering Theory, General Physics (including "Feynman's Proof of the Maxwell Equations",by which, alone, I would have bought the book), Engineering and Biology. And, in a comment, Dyson's medicine against depression: reading Ramanujan's "Notebooks" and trying to prove some of his conjectures. This is a very great book., Either buy it or ferociously fight so that the library nearest to you do it.

Pioneer writings in Child Psychology

Review Date: 2005-10-09
Anna Freud the youngest child of the founder of psychoanalysis was her father's student, and intellectual heir. But she did not content herself with simply parroting her father's teachings she made pioneering investigations of her own in the realms of defense - mechanisms, and development psychology. Above all she devoted her lifework to the study and treatment of children. And her writings on this subject form the great part of this representative volume of her work.
According to the volume's editors Richard Ekins and Ruth Freeman her innovations were in three major areas: " her conceptr of developmental lines, her diagnostic recommendations based on developmental considerations , and what she referred to as ' the metapsychological profile'.
She writes on a variety of topics, "The Concept of the Rejecting Mother", "The Role of Bodily Illness in the Mental Development of Children", "About Losing and Being Lost" "Adolescence"
"Indications for Child Analysis"
This is an essential work for anyone interested in the area of ' child psychology'.

Superb integration of mantric meditation and Christian Theology
Helpful Votes: 3 out of 4 total.
Review Date: 2006-12-25
This is an excellent book on many levels. It is one of the most sucessful integrations of meditation and Christian theology. The essays show keen insight into modern life and spirituality. I would put this book in an elite group of modern spiritual classics such as "Zen Mind, Beginner's Mind," "The Kingdom Within" by John Sanford, and some of the works of Thomas Merton. This book is billed as a development of themes from Freeman's earlier work, "Light Within". However, in my opinion, "The Selfless Self" is far superior to Light Within---it's in another league altogether. I even believe this book is superior to any of John Main's works, which are classics of Christian meditation in their own right. (I'm sure Freeman would disagree with this statement, as John Main was his teacher and the founder of the World Community of Christian Meditation, which Freeman now leads). This is the kind of book you can read over and over again through the years, and continue to see it as fresh and insightful. Laurence Freeman's opus is uniformly of high quality, but he really outdid himself with this work.
