This book, although somewhat dated, provides an excellent look at the broad trends of evolution through the eyes of a leading Johns Hopkins paleontologist. Stanley examines explains the modern synthesis, fossil evidence, speciation and extinction rates, quantum speciation, large-scale trends, and the dynamics of species turnover. Among the groups examined are gastropods, echinoids, corals, microfossils, graptolites, and vertebrates.

Nothing is better to teach your 4-10 years old kids Human Anatomy and Physiology and Reading (!!!). My sons red it both in Russian and in English. Platon (DOB: 1994) without very good practice in riding started to read the book himself and did not stop till finish it in 3 days! Even if your child can not read yet, you can read the book for him. You'll be amazed how the adventures of kids and cat inside the human body will be interesting for not just for your kid but for you also. Children like to know about human body and 4 years old child is not too young do discuss it. It is a very wise book. We are going to buy and present the book to our friends.

I have to admit it. I can't get enough of R. Austin Freeman. I shall
be very disappointed when I have read all of his mysteries, then like
Conan Doyle and Christie, no more.
I had mistakenly assumed the "The Magic Casket" was one mystery only.
It is a collection of nine of Freeman's mysteries. Every one is so
good it leaves you wanting more. Freeman wrote his mysteries at a time
when in the late 1800's and early to mid 1900's,mysteries were much
better written than today. His books are rather hard to find as are
many more jewels from that era. If you like very intelligently
written mysteries, don'tmiss any of Freeman's.

This is another one of Robert's (and others) great works! This book is written well, and is geared towards providing the DBA early in his/her career the information needed to master the Oracle database and take the next step to becoming a senior DBA, and then on to being an expert. Each section provides detail explanations on how each piece of the system works, why it's there, how to monitor/tune/administer it, and special things to look out for. The book goes beyond the "basic" architecture and gives outstanding explanations for many of the advanced features, such as replication and data warehousing, and explains them in plain language that is easy to digest. An excellent reference for any DBA!

An innovative course that offers students an exciting new perspective on mathematics, Mathematical Models with Applications explores the same types of problems that math professionals encounter daily. The modeling process--forming a theory, testing it, and revisiting it based on the results of the test--is critical for learning how to think mathematically. Demonstrating this ability can open up a wide range of educational and professional opportunities for students. Mathematical Models with Applications has been designed for students who have completed algebra I or geometry and see this as the final course in their high school mathematics sequence, or who would like additional math preparation before algebra II.

A Textbook for Those Who Think They Don't Like Math

This is a great book high school students will enjoy using to explore a number of concepts. Its subtitle is quite apt: "A Textbook for Those Who Think They Don't Like the Subject."
The book has 10 chapters:
1. The Mathematical Way of Thinking
2. Number Sequences
3. Functions and their Graphs
4. Large Numbers and Logarithms
5. Regular Polygons
6. Mathematical Curves
7. Some Methods of Counting
8. The Mathematics of Chance
9. An Introduction to Statistics
10. Some Topics in Topology
Each chapter contains a number of lessons, each of which is rich with interesting exploration problems. As an example, chapter 1 has 6 lessons with delightful investigations:
1. The mathematics behind the path of a billiard ball on a frictionless table. Students are guided to use graph paper to create "tables" of different dimensions and to track the ball's path on each of these. Stimulating questions lead the student to think about fractions, and relative primeness of numbers.
2. Optical illusions.
3. A nice area paradox based on the Fibonacci sequence, in which a rectangle is dissected in such a way that when the pieces are reassembled into a square the square appears to have a smaller area than the rectangle.
4. Dissection and coloring explorations with 3-dimensional figures.
5. Number tricks and the algebra behind them.
Other chapters are equally rich with interesting guided explorations. The book also contains many drawings, illustrations, and cartoons.
I highly recommend Mathematics: A Human Endeavor to all students and adults alike who want to explore a number of interesting and not too difficult problems with a very enthusiastic guide who makes the exploration fun. All it takes is a little curiosity and this book can take you a long way.
