This book is great for anyone that finds the science of epidemiology or diseases interesting, or for someone that is thinking of going into a related field. Easy to understand, but not too simple. It provides thorough information and many specific examples in all fields of epidemiology, including infectious disease, cardiovascular, cancer, and work-related diseases. All in all, a great read and very informative.

Scholarly, yet a very readable book for Irish history fans

This book neatly presents all the evidence for relations between ancient Ireland and the classical world -- archaeology, language, and literature. Lots of great maps and photographs are included. It gives original texts in Greek and Latin, but everything is translated into English as well. I especially liked the passages on exploding cattle and the absence of snakes in Ireland (200 years before St. Patrick!).

In reading this book, I cannot help but begin missing my family. The characters portrayed in this book are kin, and that is the overwhelming theme that keeps coming back. No matter what happens, family is the all-important center. Irena Yozwiak spares no one in her detailed description of the folk-warts and all, and there's something very warm and different about her straightforward prose. These are simple folk living in complex times, building their lives and propping each other up.

FREEMAN'S VERY BEST MYSTERY

I have read many of Freeman's mysteries but , the Jacob Street Mystery is by far the best and most thrilling one he wrote. Usually it will take
me a few days to finish one of his mysteries but I started this one
one morning and finished it that afternoon, not even taking time out
for lunch. It concerns a very talented artist and his new neighbor
who professes to be an artist but she is seemingly the most untalented
artist he or anyone else has ever seen and therein lies a mystery
with more twists and turns than you could imagine. Freeman's books
can be hard to find but if you love a good mystery with much
imagination, I suggest you track all of his you can find.

Very well written. Clear, concise and well researched. Tries to cut through all the misinformation about Gutenberg from all the contemporary rivalries for the honor of the first European printed book. Points out that most of what is known about Gutenberg is from other sources since Gutenberg never wrote about himself. Great piece of detective work.

A contemporary of Sherlock Holmes: better.

This is from memory of reading it about 50 years ago. Austin Freeman created a better detective than Conan Doyle's Sherlock Holmes. His "Dr. Thorndyke" is Holmes with TV's Quincy added: a more logical detective who explains things better to the reader. Indeed, some of the stories are "inverted", i.e. you know who did it and how, but you follow the good doctor as he unravels the case. I wanna new copy of his cases!

An engrossing historical novel

This is one of the most moving and engrossing historical novels I've ever read. I first read it more than ten years ago, yet whole scenes and passages are still vivid in my mind. It brings history to life so well that you forget you're in a historical novel, and the character who narrates the book is especially true to life. I'm buying it as a gift for my friends' kids, and you can bet I'm reading it again before I pass it on! I've read umpteen young-adult novels, and umpteen historical novels, and this one is a stand-out.

The author gives clear detail about chemistry with interwoven bits of forensic science to give body to the dryer chemistry information. I've found I can remember the chemistry better by remembering a comparison to soil samples or whatever else the author uses as an example. While one can learn chemistry by reading a dry text and practicing the problems given, the method this author uses is absorbed and understood with far more depth. Without going into gory detail, the author describes a crime scene and the case that sprouted from it. Then the author teaches chemistry by giving facts about chemistry. The information is easy to read and keeps the attention of the reader by comparing basic chemistry to applications of chemistry in forensic science.
The final word is the chemistry teacher did well by the students in choosing this book.
