A Lasting Contribution To the History of Spaceflight.

This is an excellent book recounting the true story of the Von Braun team and the origins of the U.S. space program. The "German" contribution was crucial and america would never have made it to the moon without it.("...Before this decade is out...") The same can be said about the Russian space program, the soviets hired many german rocket scientists but unlike the United States they sent them back to Germany once their knowledge had been acquired. The "rocket team" was not a bunch of nazis or war criminals, but a group of dedicated men who played an essential role in the conquest of space. I warmly recommend this book, every "honest man" should read it.

This collection catch you from its "humble" beginning

Each of Wilkins' stories is engrossing, yet surprising in its simplicity of characters and plot. Far from beautiful heiresses or men on panting steeds, the main characters are mostly old spinsters and sometimes a plain niece or two. The plot rarely goes beyond a long held grudge or-at the extreme-a woman left at the alter. But the stories pull you in from the start, as if you had known the characters all you life and are unavoidably invested in their fates.

Memorable from the first reading are the two wily sisters who run away from the nursing home. Then there's angry Mrs. Muzzy who's recent family tragedies make her decide not to celebrate Thanksgiving-a painful kitchen accident might persuade her otherwise. Another is the overbearing Mrs. Steele who means kindly, but her kindness might drive her poor friend to extremes. Finally steely Delia who is the woman left at the alter, however her story is much more about how she handles her situation in a most inspiring manner.

Reading this collection will make you wonder why we all don't know of Wilkins Freeman as we do Cather or Wharton. Each and every story is excellent-there is not one lacking among the bunch. Such consistency in writing makes one think that her other works must be just as good-and happily there is a lot. She wrote mostly short stories, but there is a novel here and there. It is a joy find such talent in a relatively unknown and unexplored author who will surely provide quality reading material through a lifetime of reading and re-readings.

Humor, Its Origin and Development

Humor: Its Origin and Development

Humor: Its Origin and Development brings together current research on the development of humor and offers some new ideas on it's evolutionary origins. [circa 1980] Focusing on the various influences on children's humor, Paul E, McGhee shows that a child learns to create and appreciate humor as he or she develops certain cognitive skills. McGhee also discusses humor as useful clinical tool and as a therapeutic way for us to cope with our problems. Tracing its evolution in the human species as well as its growth in the individual, the book treats humor as a unique form of play with symbols, ideas, and images, perhaps not beyond the capacity of animals, such as the now-famous apes who communicate - and make "jokes" - with sign language.

Anyone interested in humor will find this book informative and intriguing. Humor: Its Origin and Development requires no specialized background or knowledge and makes an excellent text or supplement for courses in psychology, family development, sociology, and literature.

Sensitive portrayal of life

The poet attempts to plumb the deepest regions of the heart and soul. With joy and sorrow, she explores family relationships in poems such as "Green Trap." Freeman touches the reader with sensitive expressions of family love and tenderness, disapointments, and hurt. Her sensitivity to language softens some of the harshness of her acute observations and feelings

moving poems by a young girl with learning disabilities

This beautiful set of moving poems was written by a young girl with learning disabilities at a time when "learning disability" was not understood or even defined. These poems made me realize how, even the very young, have the capacity to understand so much. As a physician who treats patients with physical disabilities, I have often used these poems for inspiration. With faith in our world, (even our imperfect world where little girls are teased and much sadness can exist), we can reach and grow and "climb our mountains". A wonderful little book.

Not only is the inside of the book as fascinating as the beautiful cover, but the text keeps the reader from putting the book down. I could not stop turning pages and learning more about how Jewish tradition meets issues of health and illness. A great read!

The Illustrated Stephen King Trivia Book

Pure delight

Obviously for fans of the renowned author, this collection asks trivia questions involving King or his works, offers hints and ultimately the answers. His works are further broken down into separate chapters re the novels, novellas and short stories. Other chapters include his books written as Richard Bachman and the Dark Tower series. Finally, his movies, non-fiction endeavors and miscellaneous musings fill up three more segments of the lighthearted entertaining book. Fans of Mr. King will fully enjoy this seemingly complete trivia homage that digs as deep anything you can find; for instance asking which Red Sox player had his name misspelled in The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon?. The illustrations add eerie depth as well as posing additional trivia questions associated with them. Clearly aimed at Kingophiles like the SKEMERS (Stephen King E-MailERs), whose founder Michelle L. Revelle, provides an afterward, casual fans of the author will also enjoy this fun book. Of course adding to the pleasure, this reviewer trounced her spouse.

Just finished listening to IMMORAL by Brian Freeman -WHAT A GREAT READ!!! I am a Machine Quilter by profession and listen to audio books while I quilt. Yesterday the machine had been long turned off and I was still tightly attached to my cordless headset. I was up until 2:00 in the morning because I just had to get to the ending. The ending took me totally by surprise - I never saw it coming.

Folks who are experiencing "Harry withdrawal" (Michael Connelly - Harry Bosch series) will not be disappointed with this book in what I hope will be a continuing series.
