Reading, `Ritin', and `Rithmetic - with fun and games thrown in.Review Date: 2006-03-08
The Preface to this third edition is by Martin Gardner, who wrote the prefaces for the previous editions as well. Gardner begins with a quote from Ralph Boas, whose reply to someone who said to him "You make mathematics seem like fun" was "If it isn't fun, why do it?" Jacobs makes mathematics fun, and he shows you that it is useful as well. Yes, there are uses for otherwise dull computation. That is part of the power of mathematics.
I am a mathematician. I taught a course at Bard College using this book. One of my students told me that her mother asked her what she was doing and she replied "Mathematics." Her mother replied, "You hate mathematics;" she replied, "Not anymore." Jacobs shows us that thoughtful writing that respects students and subject material can raise education to a higher level.
Start here. Back your efforts with the Teacher's Guide, which is a rich resource. Then explore further. There is a marvelous world out there.
And, yes, as you explore it you will learn to read, to write down your thoughts and conclusions, and to do arithmetic.

Math as science, art and lifeReview Date: 2000-09-12
Jacobs' writing is clear (which cannot be said for many books on math at any level) and his organization sweeps the reader right along. Though technically a textbook, this is excellent reading for anyone who's interested in learning about math. I read it in junior high school, and have re-read bits and pieces as I progressed through college and graduate school. His subjects are complex enough to merit rethinking, yet his explanations clear enough to be grasped by the first time reader.
Truly one of the great introductory math texts -- especially for those who think they don't need to know or can't understand math.

Very entertaining!Review Date: 2007-02-03
The book is divided into two parts. The first part covers various theories about the cause of the death of the dinosaurs at the end of the cretaceous. The second part in some ways refutes the first part by coming to the conclusion that dinosaurs never really died at all because birds are part of the dinosaur family. I know this is still somewhat of a contentious debate among some, but the book contains some pretty convincing evidence. It's a bit technical at times but you can always get the general idea of what the author is tying to convey.
Even though this book is chiefly about dinosaurs and birds it covers a lot of stuff not directly related to the main topic but interesting never the less. For instance I did not know about the Phylogenetic system of classification before I read it. This book explains it quite well so that someone like me, who is not well versed in biology can easily understand it.

The Mistaken Extinction: Dinosaur Evolution-Origin of BirdsReview Date: 2004-02-14
Over the course of this book, it will become clear that the questions being raised today actually have their roots in the debates that raged within the scientific community in the nineteenth century, when Dawin's theory of evolution first burst upon the scene. This book is divided into two parts.
The Search for the Smoking Gun is part 1. The eight chapters include: The Seductive Allure of Dinosaurs, Earlier Extinction Hypotheses, Contrating Volcanic and Impact Hypotheses, Enormoud Eruptions and Disappearing Seaways, THe Fatal Impact, Direct Evidence of Catastrophe, Patterns of extinction and Survival, and Our Hazy View of Time at the K-T Boundary.
These chapters give the reader adequate background information, to take us back to the time of the murderous extinction at the Cretaceous-Tertiary boundry of geological time. Here we find a theory of gradual extinction... a theory that most reseachers favor, but could this be true... there are convincing theories.
Part 2: Dead or Alive has ten chapters and it includes: Living Dinosaurs?, Dinosaurs Challenge Evolution, Dinosaurs and the Hierarchy of Life, The Evolutionary Map for Dinosaurs, Death by decree, The Road to Jurassic Park, Crossing the Boundary, Diversification and Decline, The Real Great Dinosaur Extinction, and The Third Wave.
Here we learn why most researchers now believe that birds and other dinosaurs sprung from the same ancient ancestors, all this stems from one of science's theories... evolution. This book is beautifully illustrated and has plenty of morphoroloigal drawings arising for comparitive anatomy.
I found the book to be a wealth of information easily readable and a plethora of detailed compendia on dinosaur facts. This is a book that lays out the extinction of dinosauria with great skill and clairy

Important implications for conservation-with-developmentReview Date: 2002-06-14
Finally, as a person who has lived in Samoa for several years as a volunteer teacher and as someone who conducts ecological research there, I find Dr. Cox's presentation of the people of Samoa, shown from a more personalized perspective rather than an academic one, to be open, honest and fair. He avoids falling into the trap of romanticizing or essentializing the people as "ecologically noble savages" that live in perfect harmony with their environment that has become so common in depictions of indigenous peoples in the popular media. When I read the book, I often saw the Samoa that I knew from my own personal experience.
Not a boring ethnobotanical workReview Date: 2001-11-23
I had a chance to hear Paul Cox speak and he talked about how the rainforest became his mother. The book starts with the death of his mother by cancer. He travels to Samoa to search for a possible cure in the rain forest, his quest however becomes to save the rainforest from the forces of globalization. I think the most compelling issue of this book is the positive and negative aspects of western scholarship when it comes in touch with another land and culture.
Paul is a very good storyteller and makes you want to continue reading.

A "must have"Review Date: 2007-01-12
You get all the informations you need to have a good picture about this illness. It is very well written, very easy to understand and covers all the basics and also the more deeper informations about for example side effects etc..
I can recommend this book as a standard book you should have.
Good Overview for Anxious ParentsReview Date: 2007-03-08
In fact, the best part of this book is the authors' ability to recognize and allay parental fears by dispelling myths surrounding the illness. A substantial section of the book offers suggestions to help a family (not just the patient) cope with epilepsy--at home, school, in extended family settings, and so on.
This is a well-researched and documented book. I highly recommend it for any parent facing a dignosis of epilepsy for the first time.

Wonderful Projects, Talented Artists, Poor Proofreading!!!!Review Date: 2004-01-01
Xyron is one of the most "top of mind" brands in the Arts and Crafts industry, but was referred to as Zyron several times throughout the book. I noticed misspelled words such as Dall instead of Doll and poor sentence structure.
I do not blame the author, but the Publishing House for proofreading errors. This shows lack of knowledge and details for the art form in which they are representing.
When I buy a book of this price point and with step-by-step instructions I expect top-notch editing!!!!

I can't say I agree with his position, probably because my own shrink is pretty traditional. However, the book is great explaining basic psychological concepts and the background of the non-traditional therapies.
I would recommend this as part of a series of books on the subject rather than as stand-alone.

Corduroy's DayReview Date: 2006-02-10
Corduroy counts his way through his day, from 1 bear to 10 bubbles. Little kids will quickly learn to count along, because the text is simple and the story is laid out in illustrations they can relate to easily. The text mentions 6 cupcakes, and there they are - to be counted! And, of course, one of the bonuses of Corduroy is that there are other books he stars in, and your kids will want those, too. Hooked on reading before they know what's happening!

Very, very highly recommended!!! Review Date: 2008-07-02
Second, and the reason I initially bought the book, are the photos and illustrations. I have looked at many geology books, and this book CLEARLY stands head and shoulders above the others, for fantastic graphics.
In closing, I will refund your money if you are not happy! :-)
Superbly sets forth the foundations of geologyReview Date: 2008-06-22
Shelton uses many splendid aerial photographs throughout to great advantage. But the greatest virtue of this book is the simplicity and clarity of the text. Any student can follow this text and any interested person will enjoy it.
Shelton wrote when plate tectonics was new and unsettled and he chose to omit it entirely. Do not be put off. There are abundant other sources for plate tectonics. There is no other introduction to the nature and origins of rocks and landforms to compare with this.
Tops For Learning To See The EarthReview Date: 2008-04-03
It also works if read from beginning to end, which I did recently after randomly dipping into it for years. It's excellent that way too.
The format is mostly black and white aerial pictures explained by clear, descriptive prose. As a non-geologist, I usually just skipped over the words I didn't understand. It was still great.
The author opens one's eyes to landforms, the shapes of hills and mountains, of rivers and valleys. I see so much now when I travel that I would not have seen without this book.
I particularly recommend it for those who've just bought an RV and are about to travel through the American southwest.

Awesome Book - Very HonestReview Date: 2008-06-14
But I was surprised to find out actually quite a lot. Geri is very open about her battles with anorexia and her trials with the paparazzi.
She is also an amazing person having done work for the UN, speaking about birth control and also performing for the troops.
It was a smart move for her to write this book and also a very honest one as well. She has been through a lot and you see her struggle through it all. It is very inspiring to know what she has been through and it makes you realize that celebrity is not always as perfect as it seems.
Great ReadReview Date: 2008-05-02
This book really shows you who she is as a person. You see all sides of her and it made me like her all the more b/c you see how human she is. She shows you that all celebrities have their good an bad days like the rest of us. She gives you an insiders peak into a fun and sometimes not so fun world of celebrity.
Loved it!
