I was shopping for vegetables yesterday morning in a local grocery store. I was en route to my brother's nursery to give a children's workshop on plants with special emphasis on Fathers' Day. A dear friend was in the gift section and was reading this book. She said she just couldn't stop reading it. She showed me a few of the quotes. One that caught my attention was the one by Victor Hugo, "Nothing awakens a remininscence like an odor." I commented that this sure was true. A little while later, she sought me out in the store bearing a little brown bag marked "paid." She had purchased the book for me. I was delighted. Many of the book treasures I have in my life have come to me by way of a friend. I read it all on Fathers' Day morning and decided to give it to my father. Criswell's introduction story about radishes was my motivation to give it to my dad. He is a 75 year old retired farmer and now has a tiny garden on which among other things he sows radishes. I have always loved to garden, too. I especially like the way the author has divided the book in sections for gratitude, planning, diligence, attention, silence, optimism, patience, perserverance, lifetime learning, time, reverence, and enjoying the bounty. There is nothing that can nurture my soul more on bended knees than getting my hands in the dirt. Seeds truly are a miracle. I think so every time I put sunflower seeds in the ground and patiently and lovingly watch them become giant sunflowers. I also really enjoyed quotes which dealt with the "weeds" in our lives and how we perceive them. The book is a quick uplifting treasure for the silence of an early summer morning. I highly recommend it to gardeners and non gardeners.

This Dover reprint of the classic human population genetics 1970's text, originally published by Freeman, will be welcome. Though factually dated by the ensuing 30 years of molecular genetic data, this remains a superb introduction to basic mathematical theory. I've used it in a grad course, and students really enjoyed it.

An excellent out of print book. Shelton flew and walked over the SW US, photographing the exposed strata, mountains, synclines, anticlines, cross-bedding, flexures, rivers, erosion, and much, much more. Many of the photos have illustrations by Shelton that help show what a geologist sees in the landscape. The book has 36 chapters, 425 pages, and 382 figures. There is also some historical reference data, such as William Smith's 1815 table of the fossil strata. Assembled in 1965, the book does not mention plate tectonics--and there are no color pictures. The author recommends that the book not substitute for field trips, but it certainly enriches the outside world.

The second volume of Freeman's monumental biography of George Washington covers just four years (1754-1758) of the young soldier's life. Despite the fact that these years were among the most formative for the future general and president, Freeman's devotion to detail can be overwhelming to the reader. On the other hand, the frustration of these years is perhaps best communicated by a lengthy accounting of Washington's battle with colonial inefficiency, provincial indifference, sectional jealousy, and imperial snobbery. These years were perhaps the best schooling possible for the young, ambitious, and occasionally imprudent officer who would encounter the same enemies in different forms two decades later.

The happiest period of George Washington's life was the sixteen years between wars with his beloved wife and adopted children. He spent this decade and a half (1758-1774) improving and adding to his holdings; conducting entrepreneurial innovations in business; arbitrating his neighbor's disputes; and discharging his duties in government, church, and courtroom as was expected of a Virginian of means. Most significantly, Washington's methodical and conscientious discharge of duty gained him a reputation for integrity, reliability, and disinterested fairness that preceded him as a Virginia delegate to two Continental Congresses. This reputation eventually caught the attention of a fledging rebel government seeking a leader with military experience who could command the respect and allegiance of fractious revolutionaries from Georgia to Massachussetts.
Freeman covers this period of Washington's life with an attention to detail that will likely never be equaled. These are often the silent years in Washington's biographies, sketchily outlined in favor of more detailed treatments of his martial youth or later achievements as general and president. Freeman sheds a much-needed light on this era, during which Washington gained the reputation upon which his future glory rested. Without the disciplined self-mastery of these years, he couldn't have earned the confidence of his legislative colleagues over against better-trained soldiers such as Horatio Gates and Charles Lee. Without the administrative experience gained in managing a plantation, he couldn't have managed as effectively a Continental Army habitually short of men and material. Freeman has performed an invaluable service in chronicling how General Washington was necessarily preceded by Mr. Washington, the conscientious citizen.

Freeman is the master of minutiae, particularly when it comes to Virginia and her founding families. In this first volume of his monumental biography of George Washington (1732-1754), he dedicates a lot of space to building the background of colonial Virginia, although thankfully much of it takes place in the appendices. Diligent readers of these appendices, however, will gain a deep appreciation of how thoroughly George's young adulthood was shaped by the way he responded and adapted to the colonial powers and policies that controlled his corner of Virginia.

One of my favorite stories from my youth

When I was in elementary school, when the opportunity to buy Scholastic books occurred, my parents would generally buy me four or five. This book was one of my favorites and I read and reread it many times.
Ty is a boy living with his parents in an old Western town that is now almost a ghost town. In fact, the three people of his family are the only people left in the town. They have a grocery store and they survived because the local ranchers bought their groceries there. However, new and bigger stores have opened in another town and now no one shops there. Ty's parents inform him that they will be moving in two weeks.
Ty is disappointed and he visits the local ranchers, asking them to return to his parents' store. While they are sympathetic, they inform Ty that they simply cannot get all they need at his small store. When Ty learns that his two pen pals are coming for a visit, his parents relent and agree to stay in the town until his friends leave.
The friends bring the diary of their grandfather, which mentions a cave nearby. Their excitement is further enhanced when they read that there is gold in the cave. At first, their search is futile, but eventually they find the cave. Unfortunately, some local mineralogists explore the cave and report that there is no gold in the cave. Ty is then resigned to leaving but when the news of the cave gets out, people come to see it and the town is reborn.
Even though it is a simple story, it remains one of my favorites from my youth. Ty keeps trying until he succeeds and saves his home. That will always be an uplifting story.
