The Only Extant Biography of Alexander Winton
Helpful Votes: 3 out of 4 total.
Review Date: 2001-03-22
Sadly, Amazon didn't post the full title of this book, so anybody who does a search for Alexander Winton won't easily find this book. The full title is: "Famous but Forgotten: The Story of Alexander Winton, Automotive Pioneer and Insustrialist."

In short, this is a biography of one of America's first automakers, Alexander Winton. Winton built his first car in 1896 after reading about the Duryea brothers win in the Chicago race of 1895. In 1897 Winton took his car on an 800 mile endurance run from Cleveland to New York to prove its durability to the public. The run was so successful that the Winton Motor Carriage Company became the leading U.S. maker of automobiles during the late 1890s (It was overtaken by the Electric Vehicle Company in 1899).

The Winton Motor Carriage Company continued making automobiles until the early 1920s. At that point the company was absorbed into the General Motors monolith, and the Winton name died. The company still exists as a division of General Motors, but today it produces only marine diesel engines.

This is a good biography of a man who deserves to be recognized alongside other early industry leaders like Henry Ford, Ransom E. Olds, and Henry Leland.

This book is still cutting edge even today

This book is a fascinating read for the simple fact that it does not follow conventional standards, but instead looks at the brave in society to see if they really feel fear. I'm a psychologist specializing in the areas of fears and phobias, and I can safely say that the author of this book, Stanely Rachman, is renowned as being a guru psychologist in the area of fear. This book looks at fascinating areas like whether people are really fearless, do parachutists and soldiers feel fear, and how to manage fear in everyday life.
It does border on more the academic line, though with that said Rachman writes in simple terms. If you're interested in the area of fear and want to know more about the topic, then this is a must read. Don't be put of by the publication date (1990), as a lot of it is still cutting edge today.

This Book can Build a Relationship

We do a lot of family stuff. We read together, hike, vacation; we even eat our meals together. But being a close emotional foursome [mom, dad, son age 12 and daughter age 10] we are always looking for a new way to share our time.

Pick up this book and pick a project. We started with a new gate to the pool but decided it was too easy. What is great about this book is that it not only gives great construction guidelines it is a building block (no pun intended) to other projects.

We finally decided to build a bridge across Ash Brook which passes through our property about 100 yards behind the house. At first we thought we could span 30 feet, but later decided 15 was a better idea. Well, the bridge in the book and our final product did not resemble each other. Who cares. The basics were supplied and we went our own way.

Great ideas and pictures. Use it as a guide or a technical manual. It doesn't matter. Everything works.

You can't get a better book on FHM out there. Of all of the classes I have attended, EVERY one has quoted this book and with good reason. It is clear, concise and gives a variety of stips to review with not only apagars but also gas results. If you are wondering if you should spend this much on a book, the answer is yes.

What a joy to find this book has been printed again! This is THE complete cookbook for traditional Welsh food from the humblest cottage to the grandest country house. It has not only the recipes themselves, but commentary on the ways of life in the regions of Wales, and how the food was gathered and prepared historically. There are wonderful photos to illustrate it, too. If you only get one book on Welsh cookery, this is THE one.

I got this from the library and loved the way the story is told! The music makes it more interesting (as if you weren't on the end of your seat just listening to the narrative). The book is good, but this recording is so much better. My library had the CD version and it has other music after the story is told. The music was by TajMahal and it was wonderful.
