Rebecca Freeman is a unique voice in the field of applied linguistics - she is a talented sociolinguist who has had interesting access to schools and school districts through her ethnographic research. This book documents what she learned in her two roles as a language education and policy consultant to the School District of Philadelphia and a sociolinguistic researcher. What emerges is a rich document of how to use community languages as a resource through bilingual education and egalitarian educational policy making processes. The book is full of the life and humanity that is sometimes missing from books in the field.

At all times, Freeman's devotion to the causes of educational access for language minorities and developmental bilingual education is clear. She is the epitome of an action researcher - doing rich ethnographic research while serving as an advocate, consultant, and ally to educators. She is also one of the very few researchers who uses ethnography to study educational language policy and her insider's perspective is incredibly valuable. Teachers, parents, school administrators, neophyte and senior scholars alike, and anyone interested in preserving minority languages as a resource for everyone - both native and non-native English speakers - will find something of interest within.

BUILDING WEALTH THROUGH SPIRITUAL HEALTH is a journey through spiritual guidance and counsel to explain the importance of placing your faith and money in God. This candid snapshot of reality is laden with bible verses, stressing the values of reading and understanding the principles associated with tithing and money management.

Backed by biblical principles, this book speaks honestly and forthright on what God really says about money and getting your financial house in order. Broken down from the beginning, everything is outlined, with specialized topics such as Spiritual Disobedience and the Results, to the prosperity you encounter when you are in line with the Word and being obedient to it. Providing insight on real life topics such as Investing, Debt Management, Retirement and Real Estate, these guidance modules are demonstrated and backed up with scripture.

Danny Freeman does an excellent job in breaking down a lot of questions that have gone through the minds of not just Christians, but everyone wanting to understand the principle of how God wants to bless you financially. I've never encountered a book that gives these principles to you plain and simple. It definitely helps clear up some misconceptions and false teachings that we all have encountered at some point in our lives, and I encourage everyone to read it while having their personal bible at hand. I highly recommend this book to anyone; the Word does not disappoint.

When I purchased this book at a "half-price" bookstore, I thought "I can't go wrong for the price I paid." Boy, was I ever surprised. My $1.50 has gone a long way. My 4-year-old loves "reading" along with this book during trips. The information is presented clearly, succinctly and appropriate for his age. I even learned a few things about butterflies. It introduces the life cycle of the butterfly, explains metamorphosis and camouflage and gives lots of colorful examples. Great entertainment and instructional too!.

I reviewed this book for The Home School Manual =============================

One Small Square One Small Square, Cactus Desert "Whew! It's hot: 115°F (46°C), and the temperature is still climbing. . . . Welcome to cactus country. Home of rattlesnakes and roadrunners, yuccas and chuckwallas. . . . In this desert you will discover animals that never take a drink of water and plants that double as 'apartment houses.' . . ." On turning the page we are told that exploring offers many surprises, but to be prepared in case one of the surprises happens to be a scorpion or another dangerous creature.

The words, "small square," emphasize the idea that careful observation, even in a small space, yields a wealth of interesting information. And the book itself is square (9" X 9"). You are shown life under the ground as well as above it. Notes in the illustrations point out interesting facts, and each chapter of two or more pages deals with a general topic like protection from the heat, dangers in the night, or how certain plants and animals take quick advantage of a rare rainfall. One chapter near the end explains that some deserts (including Antarctica) are cold. Names are given for all the plants and creatures shown. Studying this book is, in some ways, even better than visiting the desert itself. The book offers good science and would even make a great gift.

One of a series of Small Square books by Donald M. Silver. This one is illustrated by Patricia J. Wynne. For readers 7 to 12 (as if adults wouldn't have fun learning all these things, too). Hardcover, 48 pp. Was $14.95. 1995, from another publisher.

This book contains scary stories by the masters of horror. Poe's "The Black Cat" is both grusome and horrifying. "Mrs. Amworth" contains a truly terribly thought: a face seen in the window of a second story room. You are not safe anywhere from that vampire woman. "The Monkey's Paw" is an old favorite. "Where Angels Fear" is scary to children and adults alike. There are many other chills from the writers of classic gothic horror. Try them all out around a roaring campfire, but don't sleep alone afterwards................

Czarist Russia Comes Alive
Helpful Votes: 4 out of 4 total.
Review Date: 2002-06-05
Ruth Freeman Soloman's novel is well worth checking out. The historical setting of Czarist Russia in the late 1800's comes alive in this episodic tale of the Von Glasman family. The issues of the status of Jews in Russia gives the tale significance and depth. During the rumblings of the coming communist revolution, there was political intrigue with Rasputin and an anti-Semetic mood in Russia. The Christian Church and the struggle of the rabbis during this period come alive in the supporting characters. Ronya Von Glassman is the heir of a wealthy Jewish family with cultivated political influence. She marries Boris Pirov, the blond strapping Tartar who swashbuckles through the novel. Their passionate married life results a family of two sons with Boris' illegitimate son called "The Blond One" from a fling with the Tamara, the Queen of the Gypsies. Son Igor goes to Manchuria for several chapters; and the Russian role in that Chinese province is the backdrop for more of the story. This long epic tale moves well and has you constantly reaching to find out what happens next. The characters come alive and stay with you, long after they've headed for San Francisco. I had a great time with this book. It's well with searching out!
