I am 100% a fan of R. Austin Freeman,s mysteries. He wrote
mysteries at a time at beginning of 1900's when some of the
best mysteries were ever written. His mysteries are getting very hard to find and I won't rest until I have read all of them. His main character,
Dr. Thorndyke is a brilliant scientist and lawyer who eventually
solves the crimes.

Vital Connections: Building Relationships with Key Stakeholders gives a refreshing jump-start to PR whether the reader is just beginning or has experience but needs to brainstorm and re-Vital-ize. The case studies are particularly effective as Linda and Steve come alongside and say, "This is how others have built relationships with key stakeholders. Here's what you can learn from it."

This practical book has relevance beyond the corporate communications function. Reading this book with my executive coaching head on is fascinating; the stakeholder construct is valuable for any corporate employee. We all have key stakeholders; prioritizing our work with influencers is just good management, period.

Gardner has penned another whimsical, informative and totally amusing book (again). The entire thing is a MENSA member's dream come true - a work equally at home in the entertainment and education fields.

This is not just one dreary problem after another. Instead, Gardner offers commentary on subjects as far-ranging as time, molecules, chess, cards and electricity. And always he manages to pause for a quick puzzle or two (or three). Terrific read.

A fun book of brainteasers!

Wheels, Life and ... is an enthralling and thoroughly enjoyable book for anyone interesed in math brainteasers. It covers a wide range of intriguing topics, from simple word puzzles to complex mathematical ideas. Knotted threads and geometric fantasies mingle effortlessly with Zeno's paradox and the challenging game of life! I couldn't stop reading one teaser after another, wracking my brain on some tantalising clue. If you're fascinated by mindgames, buy it. Its a Martin Gardner!

I like to think that I'm a positive thinker and that I live my life with gratitude and faith in a great future, things always seem to go my way and I've always believed it's because of my attitude and faith in the power of my thinking. I love the way Janette thinks and writes - she has affirmed what I believe. I find her book to be spiritual, uplifting and powerful. My good friends will often ask me ,"how do you keep yourself so happy?" Well now that I have found this book, I can tell them... Im going to share this book with good friends when appropriate. Thanks Janette!!!!

Thank You!

A Goose's Journey Through Elizabethan London
Helpful Votes: 5 out of 5 total.
Review Date: 2001-05-21
This children's book is a must for Shakespeare lovers. It is the story of Willoughby Waddle, a country goose who wants to see the world and travels to "Londontown." While waddling through the busy streets, he experiences a typical day in Elizabethan London. Students of Shakespeare will recongnize many of the items and activities seen by Willoughby on his awe-inspiring and sometimes fearful trip. He eventually meets another "Will," and in true "Forrest Gump" or "Shakespeare in Love" fashion profoundly affects the fate of literary history! This is an adorable book filled with historically accurate allusions, Elizabethan language, and beautiful pictures on every page.

LUMINOUSLY ILLUSTRATED

Children's book author/illustrator Don Freeman is beloved by many for his Corduroy books, Dandelion, Manuelo the Playing Mantis, and others. His death in 1978 left a void in his chosen genre. Thus, it is with great pleasure that one finds a reprint of one of his outstanding works.

Luminously illustrated in the trademark Freeman style Will's Quill is the story of a friendship between a goose, Willoughby Waddle, and William Shakespeare. It seems that Willoughby was curious to see the bustling city of London, so he set off from his country home. However, the people, the ruckus, the stone streets were all too much for this farm bred goose.
The one person in the city who was kind to Willoughby was Shakespeare.

So, Willoughby followed Shakespeare to the Globe Theatre. Once there, Willoughby squeezes between people's legs to see a stage on which his new friend is dueling. Of course, a goose has no idea what a play is so he attempts to rescue Shakespeare. What a sight!

But, as they say, all's well that ends well, and later that night Willoughby is finally able to really help his friend.

Will's Quill is a story that deserves a place on every young reader's library shelf.

One of the best!!!!!

Review Date: 2003-08-15
As a teacher who enjoys combining literature and science, this is one of my favorite books to read to children.

Everything on the island appears to be in balance until the wolf cubs discover a raft on the beach. As they explore, the raft drifts off and their parents are forced to follow. With the wolves gone there are now no natural predators to keep down the deer population, which threatens the whole island ecosystem. Can life on the island ever be the same?

This short story is beautifully written and illustrated by Celia Godkin.

Best book out there on the role of predators in an ecosystem
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2003-10-30
This is a simple retelling of the story of Isle Royal, an island that was brought back into ecological balance when a wolf pack crossed over an ice bridge to the island. Before that time the vegetation was being denuded by moose, and the moose herd was suffering. The island was the living laboratory for some of the classic research on the relationship between predators and their prey, and the role of predators in an ecosystem. It also relates to another classic essay by Aldo Leopold, called "Thinking Like A Mountain." again, about wolves and their relationship to their prey and to the ecosystem as a whole. These concepts are important to teach young children, but the research and essay above would be hard for young kids to understand. This book serves as an excellent introduction to the topic. There are few books out there that tackle this important subject, this book fills the niche.

Luftwaffe What If's

Review Date: 2005-03-09
There were a lot of American fighter groups based in England. One of them had to have the best record, and that was the 56th. Flying P-47s the 56th ended the war with more than a thousand victories.

This is the story of the group from its formation to the end of the war. It is based on the official records of the group as well as with interviews on over a hundred vetrans of the group.

One, surprising to me, incident described in the book involved taking an old worn out P-47 and re-building it as a two seater. The worn out airplane had been flown for three hundred hours. Now a days, a plane with only 300 hours of flight time is hardly broken in.

Insightful Look at the 8th AF's Top Guns!

Review Date: 2005-12-09
There have been many books on the top-scoring 56th FG. Some have recounted the missions flown, victories scored, etc. in greater depth. Some have featured many more photographs. But Freeman's book has really captured the essence of the 56th FG - who those people really were and why they were so successful. In my estimation, it ranks as perhaps the best book on the Wolfpack.

Most 56th FG histories, and most group histories in general, relate WHAT that particular unit accomplished. They never go beyond that point and reveal to the reader WHO those people were, what they were like as people, how various pilots and group personnel were viewed within the group, personality clashes and so on. That kind of information takes a lot of more digging on the part of would-be authors.

Freeman took the time and did the research to be able to present the human face of the 56th FG. So if you want to get the straight skinny on Hub Zemke or Dave Schilling, Bob Johnson, Paul Conger, etc. and learn why the Group became the 8th AF's top guns, grab a copy of Freeman's book. You won't regret it. Highly recommended!

Sadly, WOLFPACK WARRIORS was one of the last books penned by Roger Freeman. Freeman was THE 8th Air Force historian. His "Mighty Eighth" books stand as testament to his skills as a researcher and writer. He will be sorely missed!

Amazing amount of info and inspiration & [good] price!

Review Date: 2002-10-27
What a gem! I was surprised when I discovered this book. The gist of the book is for the child (or adult) to mark off a square space in the woods and begin exploring and learning. This book is a real integration of activities, suggested observations, and fact. The learner is to explore, dig, look, observe and investigate every inch of this square area. While suggesting the learner look for this or that, the author provides factual information about various findings. The book goes into a lot of detail and there are many things that the author thinks may be found. I bet that the learner won't find everything that is mentioned but that is OK, at least the reader can experience it in reading about it in the book if it is missed "in real life".

The book starts off in autumn, assuming the learner begins in the fall and in an area of deciduous trees. A small sampling of what is addressed in this book is why trees lose their leaves, how trees store energy and make energy, examples of camouflage with animals, migration of birds and butterflies, insects, spiders and their webs, lizards and mammals big and small. As the book progresses winter then spring then summer is discussed.

The illustrations are drawn and in color (just like the cover), these are not photographs. There are loads of details in the drawings. At the back is an illustrated guide to creatures grouped by their classification (leaves, mammals, fungi) and an index.

The learner is encouraged to do creative projects such as leaf and trunk rubbings. Also keeping a nature journal or notebook to record the findings is recommended.

I am surprised that so much information and creative ideas packed into this small and very inexpensive book. This is one in a series of "one small square" books and I plan to buy more to use in our homeschooling adventure. Now this is science!

This book provides a small instant field trip to those students who might not have access to woods. It gives incredible details of what goes on in one small square of woods. For those who have access to wooded areas for exploration...safety tips are included as well as supplies needed for collecting data while exploring. I teach second grade and use all of the Small Square books in my teaching.

How the brain works -- some viewpoints
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2000-11-27
I particularly like the article by H.J. Jerison in this book, ie, Paleoneurology and the Evolution of Mind. Brain weight is plotted against body weight for living and archaic mammals and reptiles. Brain weight tends to vary with 2/3rd power of body weight, with vertical displacements for mammals and again for primates. Living reptiles show similar brain weights as archaic ones. There is a four-fold increase in brain size from archaic reptile to archaic mammal, and then mammalian encephalization holds steady for another 100 million years. In the last 50 million years there is another four-fold increase in brain size from archaic mammals to living mammals. The emergence of improved hearing and smell is postulated as the reason for an enlarged brain in early mammals over their reptile ancestors.

It is an excellent synthesis that integrate the wide field of Brain Science based in some deep insights only comparable to what Newton did in Principia Mathematica. It is a good perspective made by a Scientist who always has been made enphasis in a realist application of the Physical, Chemical and Engineering principles of Neuroscience.

One of the great and forgotten economic classics. Those who ignore history are bound to repeat its mistakes.
Mandatory reading for Mr Greenspan, Bernanke and all bankers, let alone Central ones.
What they propelled up must come crashing down. Addiction to debt is deleterious to your financial health.
As we are to repeat the 1929 crisis on a grander scale, in technicolor and cinemascope, well worth rereading this great 'black and white' account of the folly of debt.
A sober reminder that 'greed is not good' and that (economic) 'science sans conscience, n'est que ruine de l'âme!'

A Must Read....

This is the 1935 classic which tells you, like you've never heard before, just what debt really is, how it works, and why it can bring down any civilization. As good, if not better, than Andrew Dickson White's 'Fiat Money Inflation in France'. Believe me, these will knock your socks off!
