A wonderfully breezy, upbeat, ground-breaking book

Powell's style is easy to follow. His points are unusual in that they break some of the long-held notions of "successful aging". What's more, he relies on solid data to back up his claims. Thus, this is not as "new age" book along the lines of a Deepak Chopra book. Powell is much more genuine and believable.

Readable and provides ideas I now use for daily living

This fascinating book provides ideas which I now include in my daily living. I've given copies to my 86 year old mother and my late mid-life contemporaries.

The author uses his personal experiences and everyday examples to make research results clear and understandable, in a very readable book. I particularly like the goal of the subtitle "Maximizing the Quality of Later Life,"

When I lend my copy to friends who do not like to even think about aging (some with multiple 39th birthdays), I suggest they read the 14 pages of the Introduction and the 16 pages of the last chapter "Summing Up: Guidelines For Optimal Aging." This gives them a quick overview and ideas for what to do now.

For me, this is a "must read" for anyone who is past midlife and trying to "age optimally, or for those who deal with us.

I wish this book had been around when I was in high school because it brought the field of science in general, and geology/biology in particular, alive for the first time. I honestly looked at my natural surroundings differently after reading it. I have also purchased and enjoyed the hard cover copies of Professor Ward's other two books. Some of the passages he writes especially with regard to bringing you back in time give you shivers.

Charming

Peter Ward is one of the best writers in this genre - personally I rate him with Wilson, Dawkins and Gould - at least when it comes to the art of telling a good story, creating a good picture.

"On Methuselah's Trail" is one of the best books I have read about fossils and evolution. Not revolutionary, challenging or very complicated - just well written, charming, and - most important - it makes you want go right out in the bush to look for your own fossils!

A new era of monologue study

Neil Freeman has taken what all actors and theatre professionals do and put it together in one book (or three!). He's put the modern version of speeches & soliloquies and placed them side-by-side with the folio versions. He's also added insightful commentary on the changes and highlighted important aspects. Shakespeare was meant to be performed (not read) and you can't perform his plays without examing the folio for clues to character and inspirational guidelines. This book makes streamlines this process. Now if only someone would publish all of the plays like this!

How do I love this? Let me count the ways...

This book is a very thorough reference in Shakespearean monologues. This volume of comedies comes from his first folio and includes the original text with modern translations and footnotes regarding the audience and nature of the material.

The actual layout is easy to follow and read, with items in three columns. The print itself reads from top to bottom instead of left to right, allowing the reader to gather more information at once. At the opening, Freeman discusses the principles behind each play, describes the charaters, and explains how to use this book. From that standpoint, it is a vital reference to any English student or lover of Shakepeare's works.

Once Upon A Christmas: Stories By James Dillet Freeman is an enchanting anthology of stories for the Christmas season. "Angel With a Broken Wing" is about a young boy's encounter with Mort, the angel of death - and the power of love to save one from the inevitable. Other stories include "The King of Heaven Is Coming Tonight" and "The Woman Who Learned To Love Christmas." Printed in profound bold type, and illustrated with humble yet beautiful color artwork, Once Upon A Christmas is a superbly crafted giftbook meant to be treasured and read aloud for the holidays year after year.

Fables from the Spirit

These ten stories are the only fiction ever written by poet, essayist, and philosopher James Dillet Freeman. They are filled with the love, compassion, and gentle humor that characterizes all of his writing, and range from the story of the foolish woodland denizens who know that "The King is Coming," but don't recognize Him when they see Him to the story of Rosa, who doesn't realize that the only gift she has to give is the greatest of any given, as told by St. Francis of Assisi. There is the Christmas story told as if it happened today, a story of love, and yet one which offended some readers. The stories are accompanied by beautiful pictures, bound in a very attractive book that one would proudly display on the coffee table during the Christmas season. This book would make a beautiful gift to yourself which will give new insight into the Truth told us in the Christmas story.

Judy has given storytellers and librarians another great resource in this book. Keep it handy for those moments when you can't think of what story you want to tell to the kids next. And this book is fantastic for those of us who help teach folk tales and the variations therof. Plus there are tips for readers' theater and a list of good books to dramatize or adapt for readers theater scripts. I could go on! Judy has done it again!

We recommend this book to therapists in our facility within our multidisciplinary pain facility. When a nurse case manager requests reference material to understand the treatment of chronic pain, this book is also recommended. It is one of the first of its kind, it assists clinicians in understanding the evaluation process and establishment of treatment plans for pain patients. The book assists in determining goals of treatment and recommended interventions to obtain the goals. It is an excellent guide for those just starting out in pain management, or well entrench in the pain arena. I have extentsive experience in treating chronic pain and treaching others how to manage these patients, and found tremendous knowledge in this book. Definitely a reference guideline.

An excellent resource for the pain management psychologist.

This book offers psychologists a clear and methodical look at pain management psychotherapy. Not just an overview but a thoughtful and thorough presentation of various traditional methods, techniques and approaches to working with those in chronic pain. It also offers a large appendix of pain measures, structured interviews etc. to assist with pain assessments and monitor treatment progress. Very highly recommended.

Many insights into sight , interpretation and comprehension
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2003-12-23
This is a great work on something rarely considered - how do we perceive the physical world? When you think about it, the very act itself is incredible - almost magical. Cells that were sensitive to light developed, over eons, into the amazing organ we call the "eye". But how does the eye work, or perhaps more important, what are the mental and physical processes that allow us to view reality?

The first essay describes comprehension as a process, not a series of unrelated events. He compare comprehension to a melody which is not simply a series of single notes but a sum, a quality. Our consciousness involves much more that merely noting shape, color and size - it involves the way we associate those elements with the human experience.

The author discusses many aspects of sight itself - constancy, detecting motion, depth, color, patterns and organization. An excellent essay on art explains how we perceive a 3-D world from a 2-D image. Finally, a chapter on geometric illusion and the point that we perceive what we think we perceive and this may not always be reality.

I work in a busy public library which has a particularly well-used children's section. We purchase a large number of titles, both new and old, and are very pleased to be able to count 'Pet Wash' as a very welcome new adition.
The narrative is well-paced and happily becomes resolved in a way that complements the idea of the story. I am particularly impressed with Tor Freeman's illustrations. There is great characterisation (shown in both the children, and their pets), which add life and humour to all of the book's inhabitants. I would recommend this book to other libraries and parents of children who will also get a chuckle from it. A fun read!

My kids favorite book

We received this book as a gift and it instantly became my children's favorite. My boys (ages 2 and 4) include it in the group of books we read every night. There was a big upset in the houses when it went missing for two days. I have purchased several copies which I give as my staple gift at birthday parties. The rhyming text is simple enough for very young kids to follow and clever enough to appeal to older children. The illustrations are unusually engaging and original and still make my kids giggle. It is also one of a few books that does not become tedious to read over and over. Instead, my kids now know much of it by heart and my 4 year old will "read" it to my 2 year old.

A rare find.

I have to say as a pro photographer.... this book is excellent... whenever i see someone who is new to photography I tell them to pick this book up, John Freeman covers pretty much EVERYTHING... He goes from using regular point and shoot cameras to Single lens Reflex and even Medium Format. This book isnt good for someone who is looking for advice on just specific things.... this is for someone looking to want to take a good picture. I have many John Freeman books and he is an excellent photographer with many skills. So i Highly suggest this book

Captivating!

Reading university course material generally involves wading through dry, factual textbooks which fail to spark interest. I was pleasantly surprised by Tipler. Very pleasantly, in fact.

The content is divided into sensible sections (Mechanics, Oscillations and Waves, Thermodynamics, Electricity and Magnetism, Light, and Modern Physics) and the layout very clear and readable. I felt that the writing was excellent. Concepts were explained clearly, with formulas and worked examples throughout. The worked examples, where long, even included numbers steps and explanations along the way. This being a great boon to engineers, who, let's admit, may want to skip over derivations and see how things are worked out.

One of my favourite things about this book is the clear, modern illustrations and the end-of-chapter reviews, which contain all the important formulas, theories and constant for handy reference and to refresh your memory.

All in all, this book is one of the better things on my prescribed reading lists, and is so captivating that I do in fact this book for both business and pleasure.
