A Great Cosmic Companion

Review Date: 2001-04-23
The cosmos are very perplexing, as well as awe-inspiring, and its wonderful how this book packages this very scientific information in a friendly and approachable way. Many people like myself, who are not scientists but who yearn to learn the basic theories, look up at the night sky and wonder how planets, stars and galaxies came to be and exist. This book is a great Cosmic Companion which guides you through the stars in a comprehesible fashion: although space terminology can get complex, it is easy to follow along with Dr. Odenwald's voice of the book. If you love interesting details about the heavens, then this book is perfect for you: you'll ingest this neat info so quickly, that your mind will be like a miniature black-hole, and the details will be unable to escape from your mind's event horizon. It's a wonderful book that I feel can be used to teach younger students many important and fascinating facts; I say this as an experienced teacher and journalist. It helps us to understand the ever chaotic cosmos a whole lot better.

In his frequently asked questions book, Odenwald doe s an excellent job at answering technical and rather pseudoscience sorts of questions. However, while Odenwald does show he knows what he's talking about, his writing style and organization leave much to be desired.

These questions cover topics from the solar system to galaxies to the Big Bang. The general reader may find this easy to read reference an enjoyable way to learn about these topics.

Great Supplement for Bio Class or General Reader

This book is amazing. Seldom does one encounter a text that can adequately explain the complexities of our natural world in plain and approachable language. Gilbert and his two students accomplish this in Bioethics and the new embryology. Especially appreciated is the integration of religious and philosophical analysis that supplements and deepens one's understanding of the subject. Overall, great writing on a relevant topic.

A much needed book

For years I have taught a course entitled Biopolitics and for as many years I have found myself cobbling together pictures, creating my own schematics using Canvas, and otherwise playing the bricoleur because of the lack of a book such as Bioethics and the New Embryology to provide the key biological information. Now I have the book I have wished for. I can't thank Scott Gilbert and his coauthors enough for having taken on a task that needed doing. The political, moral, and economic questions that swirl around embryos, stem cells, and growing knowledge of the human genome aren't resolved by reading this book, but the discussions of those questions will be markedly improved if this book is widely read.

"Learn what is true in order to do what is right"...TH Huxley
Helpful Votes: 3 out of 3 total.
Review Date: 2005-09-06
What good advice from Thomas Huxley! These days everyone seems to have an opinion about everything, especially about stem cells and Darwinian evolution. In light of advances in our technology that allow manipulation of human reproduction and the end of life, we as a Society are reexamining our ethical positions on the subjects of life and death. Too often our judgments about the ethics of reproduction, medical treatments and dying are made without knowledge of the basic biology underlying these big issues- information that might help us decide if we have the right to alter the course of human development. Nor do we know the philosophical and religious arguments on both sides of these issues.
Scott Gilbert and colleagues have done us all an enormous service by providing the information needed to make judgments that are based on knowledge and not just emotions. Bioethics and the New Embryology was designed to be springboards for discussion. In seven units with two chapters each, these authors discuss a series of questions, including when does human life begin?, Should new reproductive technologies be regulated? Should we choose the sex of our children? Should we allow human cloning? Should we use stem cells as spare body parts? Should we modify the genes of our offspring? Should animals be used for research and under what circumstances? For each question, there is a chapter discussing the biology involved, and this is followed with another chapter discussing the political, religious or ethical issues in a balanced fashion. No answers to the dilemmas are provided, only the means to arrive at them.
Highly readable - written at the level of an entering college freshman - and full of marvelous photographs - some previously found only in medical school text-books. The reader can learn with little effort about such things as what a human fetus looks like during each week of development, how twins are formed, how animals are cloned, the techniques used for sex selection and assisted reproduction, where stem cells come from and why they do what they can do, what is normal, what is gene therapy and so much more. You will also learn about what philosophers and leaders of all religions believed in the past and what they believe now about the very problems we are concerned with today,
The book is a first of its kind - a highly accurate informative little book to be used as a basis for informed discussion of these important issues. And it is written by one of the leading developmental biologists, who has a background in religion as well; Gilbert is the author of the most popular college text book about developmental biology, so the information is accurate, as well as entertaining.
Gilbert intended the book to be used to" introduce first year college students to critical thinking about contemporary issues, for ethics units taught within Science Departments and for adult education seminars...". I sent copies to my children, to my sister who will use it as a topic for her literary club, and to close friends. It's a good gift for any thoughtful person. I am sure it will be useful everywhere for small discussion groups interested in debating some of the important issues that need some debate.

Impressive Text; Amazing Price!

At long last, here is a biology text that raises challenging questions of ethical legal and social implications in a serious and meaningful way. All too often, these vitally important issues are used to decorate an undergraduate textbook with sidebars trying to impart "relevance" to "the material" of the course. This text places all of its content in the social and historical context necessary for the understanding both of the science and of its place in the larger scheme of things. I know of no other book that does the job better.

The book is clearly and attractively designed, and well illustrated in color (and occasionally B&W). But the most amazing feature is the price. Finally, here is a book that students will not resent buying, and can affordably be added as a supplemental textbook to any course. (Although there is probably enough here to cover at least half of a semester in an introductory course for non-majors.)

If you are selecting books for your course, be sure to take a look at this one!

If you are no longer a student, but want to learn about the new world of stem cells, clones, genomes, reproductive technologies, and what such things mean in our daily lives, BUY THIS BOOK!

It's not often you remember the title (admittedly not a complicated one) and author of a textbook some 20 years after you read it, but I have. I have not read it recently, not since college in the early 80s, but have resolved to pick it up again. It is not merely for the student, but for the inquisitive mind. Whatever shortcomings one might imagine, I cannot recall a better, more complete textbook on any subject.

In the January 2004 issue of "Blue", the Australian magazine where Paul Freeman is decribed as the magazine's "most featured" photographer, the artist says that he has always wanted to keep some link with classical art. "Sort of like a meat pie inside the Sistine Chapel." Most of these models Michelangelo would have loved, and they to a man are meat pies. There is not a wimp or effeminate-- and it's okay if one is-- man in this collection of over 200 photographs. These men are rugged, hairy, beefy, muscular, tattooed, pierced, sweaty, wet and muddy. Some of them are a bit stylized and wearing gladiator garb. Many of them are at the beach-- Bondi perhaps--there are some beautiful portraits here. And no model has his genitalia airbrushed.

In his brief introduction Mr. Freeman says that as a youngster he was taken by the image of the suffering Saint Sebastian (check out the portrait on page 174 of Garth Elliot 2) and that present day influences are Bruce Weber and Herb Ritts (speaking of airbrushing photographs). I think many of his models look more like some of the work of Jim French as well as Caravaggio-- whom he acknowledges as an inspiration-- and Michelangelo.

Many of these men are photographed as many as 6, 7 or 8 times so you will probably get to see a lot of your favorites. Where to begin-- the man on page 11 (beautiful shadows), the outrageous Grant Perry (page 24 and 7 more photos), the hairy barrel chested Igor Praporshchikov on page 55, Black Angel No. 4 on page 73, Mat Obelisk on pages 76 and 77-- perfect exposure and lighting--the Gladiator on page 103 that, thank goodness, shows up again and again-- Gladiator 4 on page 126-- this is an unusal and most flattering pose-- the portrait of Ryan Kwanten on page 154, Kane 1 and 1 (pages 158 and 159-- the list goes on and on. The only photographs I don't care for are the ones with a snake wrapped around the model. Perhaps it's the Garden of Eden story that turns most of us off to these kinds of photographs. Richard Avedon did the snake photographs better years ago anyway.

If the test for a book of photographs is whether or not you return to it again and again, then BONDI CLASSIC gets an A+. In its own way this book is just as hot as Tom Bianchi's ON THE COUCH series. If you can only buy one book of this kind this year, this one's the one. Oh, go ahead; treat yourself and buy Bianchi's also.

The Men of Australia

Review Date: 2005-12-21
For those looking for the best of the books of male photography, this portfolio by Paul Freeman deserves a place high on the list. Different photographers approach the male nude with different agendas: some try for classic poses, some go for spontaneous moods, some keep the 'privates' in the shadows while others place the focus there, some costume, some try for natural effects. Freeman searches (and definitely finds!) subjects who are quintessentially masculine Men. And this collection should equally engage the interest of women as of the ready-made male population.

Freeman uses his fellow countrymen (Australia) to show us the virile attitude of the untamed. These 'models' are buff, have body decor from piercing or ink, know how to make the partially clothed form even more sensuous that the fully nude form (although there is a lot of that, too), and in general creates photographs that are well conceived and executed and presented in a superb format. There are portraits solo and in tandem. This is a collection that will find a wide audience. Recommended for the novice and the connoisseur collector alike! Grady Harp, December 05

This book is a fabulous resource for constructing a school-wide writing community. We purchased it as a resource for all of our teachers and immediately began discussing it in small groups and staff developments. The teachers see it as a tool to help them keep student writers at the edge of their learning. We have seen writing scores on state-wide assessments increase in our school using the target skills and craft models discussed in this book.

Mike Orkin's book explains the real odds for all the common casino games, and in the process, shows you it is generally better to leave your money in your own pocket, and just watch. Games covered include roulette, craps, Keno, slots machines, sports betting, blackjack, lotteries and horse races. A great chapter on the Prisoner's Dilemma is included, and covers thecomplex issue of when it is best to be a snicth, and when it is best to be quiet.

Review Date: 2001-10-25
Casino math for the non-mathematician. If you really want to understand the math, it will take some effort to follow if you haven't dealt with probability and statistics in a while or ever. However, I am so tired of people presenting schemes on how to win at craps, roulette, etc: Martingale, anti-Martingale, D'Alembert, contra-D'Alembert, ad nauseam. No matter how you weight a negative expected return, the sum of the series is still expected to be negative. The risk to people who use these schemes unwittingly to gain a series of small "wins" is the guarantee of a single huge loss somewhere in the future - the longer you put it off, the larger it will be. If you didn't understand what you just read and want to, this book is for you. The writing is brisk, bordering on entertaining (if you're into this sort of thing) and not nearly as dull as you'd expect. The previous reviewer covered which games were presented so I won't repeat. Like Stanford Wong, this author's math is accurate - unlike many, many other authors.

If you decide to do any gambling, even a few bucks on your state lottery, consider the price of this book as your first bet. Orkin presents the real odds of most popular gambling games, at least one 'sure fire system' (yes there is such a thing, but you need deep pockets and have to be satisified with a pretty low rate of return), and the effects of the 'house edge'in an entertaining manner and with just a minimum of math. In fact, skipping the math in the book does nothing to reduce the book's usefulness nor your reading enjoyment.

Read this if you think gambling is a solution to money problems. In fact, after going through this highly readable and entertaining book you may be tempted to skip the lottery tickets and put the money in casino stock instead!

Excellent atlas of electron micrographs for histology
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2006-10-04
This book consists of ~200 electron micrographs comprehensively reviewing the structures most often seen in histology courses. Each plate is accompanied with a page-long explanation of the image, a brief overview of the histological subject, and an orientation diagram is presented in most places that one is needed. The micrographs are carefully chosen to illustrate points that might be lost in traditional light micrograph pictures. I find that many of the explanations are more clear and concise than those in standard histology texts. The biggest drawback is that the explanations of the letters used to call out key structures on the images are hard to spot while quickly reviewing the text. A short key on each page would be welcome. But this is a minor quibble. This book is a fantastic accompaniment to a 1st year histology text, especially as fewer and fewer of them seem to be including EM images at all these days. Get it if you like to see good, informative, real pictures.

Periodically I read a review article in cell biology to keep current. With the advent, of non-viral transport of genes and therapeutic agents, I needed a low cost review. The text by Professors Cross and Mecer did the job for me and it is a well marked text on my bookshelf.

Karla Freeman declares midlife to be magical.

If you're a 50-something baby boomer, you've had significant life experiences. Seeing yourself with the potential to live another 30-50 years can empower your choices. Freeman says seeing this potential and knowing there's half a lifetime ahead of you beats sitting and staring at your wrinkles. She calls it the "Midlife Return" when you return to your hopes, dreams, creative yearnings and yet-to-be-explored self.

Do you want a second career, a new life abroad, a chance to be a writer or an actor? You have the time.

Using her 30 years of experience as a psychotherapist, the author helps individuals and groups cultivate magic in midlife. She is a licensed clinical social worker (LCSW) who maintains a private practice and facilitates workshops internationally.

This book consists of short easy-to-read chapters. It is a question and answer format, divided into four sections. Freeman suggests you read Section One, then flip around to any questions that are important to you. Section One is called "The Magic of Your Mission." The topics covered in the other sections include Work, Money and Passion; Health and Well-Being; and Relationships.

Section one explores Freeman's "syn" theory of creating magic. She explains how synchronicity, synergy and synthesis create midlife magic and apply to your lifetime choices. She describes a balanced life divided, like a pie, into slices. PIE stands for "put in energy." You choose what each piece of your life pie represents, and prioritize which slices to put your energy into.

Another exercise is used to start the process of change. On a sheet of paper, you draw a box and divide it into nine squares. Based on Abraham Maslow's hierarchy of needs, you write a value in each square. Then you rate each by the amount of energy you are putting into it. The next step is to start shifting your energy to where you want it to be.

Addressing the key areas of love, work, money and health, Freeman skillfully guides readers on a journey toward fulfillment in the second half of life. She offers well-researched advice with humor and sensitivity. A list of resources is included, as well as an invitation to readers to relate their stories and experiences.
