These days, celebrity authors earn thousands of dollars for a speech, but back in the 1880s, Ralph Waldo Emerson, the first
American author known to receive payment for delivering a talk, was paid $5 and oats for his horse.

This is an excellent little primer of the important writings of Joseph Stalin. Limited as it is, the book, nontheless, provides
great insight into the struggles going on in the Soviet Union during the entire time from 1905 until 1952.
Additionally, the Forward written by Bruce Franklin, provides an excellent contex for the writings and dispels many of the myths perpetuated in the West about recent Soviet history.

This is the second Essentials book I purchased in the series and I can't rave enough about them. In my management position
in one of the top financial industries, I need to understand what is going on but I don't need the technical details so many
other books get into. These book provide great coverage on important topics -- they really help be to understand. I heard
about and had a slight grasp on the use of ROI and other measures from my work, but I didn't really understand it until I
read this book. A must have for any professional--I'm recommending it to my colleagues too!

I enjoyed this book because the author brought the satanic
realms and the angelic realms to life. She wrote a great
story about Satan and his demons, and how he almost lost
his place of honor in his dark kingdom.
I am looking forward to the sequel, and I hope it is as
exciting as this one.

You wouldn't pitch a client or close a deal unprepared. Likewise, diligent preparation can make a huge difference in your
performance as a deposition witness, and thereby may strongly affect the outcome of a case or the size of a settlement. As
John Lang's helpful reference book makes clear, some of the keys to optimal performance are intelligent preparation, careful
strategizing with counsel, and understanding how civil discovery works. The author deploys his considerable litigation experience
and numerous examples to help you understand the deposition process, and he shows you how to most effectively influence the
ways it is likely to unfold in your case. He also provides useful tips for maximizing the value you receive for those fees
you pay for litigation lawyers. Come to think of it, those lawyers would do well to read this book, too.

God as a Reality

From back cover:
"Charles Hartshorne's writings offers some of the most important proposals in philosophical theology in the 20th C., including a rigorous defense of arguments for the existence of God and the concept that God participates in time and change. 'Existence and Actuality' presents a critical debate among eminent philosophers, theologians, and Hartshorne himself on Hartshorne's method, his logic, his theism, and his metaphysics. Both proponents and critics of this honored philosopher have contributed essays to the volume, and Hartshorne has written an extensive response to each.
Hartshorne's philosophy has had significant impact on current debates about the nature of God and has enabled theologians to suggest new solutions to traditional problems. His discussion of God as a reality participating in time and change, rather than as timeless and unchanging, allows markedly different approaches to such isses as free will and the presence of evil in the world. He is especially known for his revision of Anselfm's ontological proof for the existence of God, and has argued that his revised proof, when all its implications are taken into account, constitutes a systematic metaphysics. The essays in this volume analyze and assess his mature achievements, clarifying ongoing debates and also raising entirely new questions.
Hartshorne joined the faculty in phi8lsophy at Harvard in 1925, where he edited the papers of C.S. Peirce and was both an assistant to and a leading interpreter of Alfred North Whitehead. He later joined the Department of Philosophy and the Divinity School at the University of Chicago. Harthshorne is credited with shaping the influence of process philosophy on contemporary philosophical theology.

you've seen the herzog movie now read the participants' own account! available at all good libraries (about the only place
you'll find this book unfortunately). one of the most bizarre journeys ever undertaken during the golden age of exploitation.
i get lost with words trying to describe this book. i guess you could describe it with all of the usual superlatives about
'testimony to the human spirit', 'indominable willpower of men' but this quest for god, glory and gold rapidly descends into
an exploration of greed, power and survival. it's well worth reading the original text of the journey, it's endlessly fascinating
as the journey moves through the andes with hope and then down the amazon with horror. march on.

This is an extremely well-written book on a sadly neglected figure in American culture. The most popular newspaper columnist
of his time, Adams made "Tinker to Evers to Chance" a national catchphrase and was mentor to George S. Kaufman, James Thurber
and other distinguished humorists. I thought the research was particularly thorough--especially regarding the ancestry of
Adams' second wife. And someone must have done a lot of work in musty libraries looking up all F.P.A.'s articles for now-forgotten
magazines! I hope he got paid well. I would also single out the index for special praise.
