The most neglected continent
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2003-02-01
Most works on the Antarctic describe the region with a series of forbidding extremes. The continent is said to be the coldest, driest, highest, windiest, and most remote place on earth. At least one other extreme merits inclusion on this list: Antarctica also is the most neglected continent in both the practice and study of American national security policy. The reasons for this neglect are not hard to fathom. Precisely because of all Antarctica's extremes, only a handful of Americans have ever expressed an interest in the region. During the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, sailors from New England explored the waters of the Southern Ocean in search of seals for trade. Later, commercial exploitation of the region's living resources gave way to heroic feats by famous explorers. The adventures of Roald Amundsen, Robert Falcon Scott, and Admiral Richard Byrd opened up the Antarctic in both a literal and figurative sense, as the popular imagination became seized with the haunting images of the last earthly frontier. Yet, for all its majestic beauty, the Antarctic never possessed sufficient wealth or strategic significance to command broad and sustained attention from the American body politic. Even as more Americans became aware of the region, Antarctica remained the province of the few. Indeed today, it is populated only by a small circle of scientists, and the civilian and military officials who support their research. Not surprisingly then, US decisionmakers have generally paid only scant attention to Antarctica. Consequently, policy toward the region traditionally has suffered from a lack of strong direction from the top and a corresponding air of ambivalence. For example, in the first half of this century, the State Department carefully laid the foundation for a territorial claim there

The author has put together a poignant and well-written analysis of what promises to be a hot topic for international politics in the coming years. Though some of the conclusions may leave the reader cold, Klotz's work provides an excellent guide for those interested in both Antartica and national strategic policy in general. The author's astutely critical presentation makes it much easier for the reader to warm up to the material than in many similar contemporary works. Frank Klotz has done the professional readership a tremendous favor by writing this book. One can only hope that with this sort of analysis out there, unresolved political tensions might not boil over in the foreseeable future.

This book and its first volume are very useful both for amateurs interested in beetles, or for coleopterologist that seek a general handbook on beetles families.
Each chapter corresponds to a family, and have been written by specialist on that specific group.
The drawings could be better in some cases, but in general is a very helpful and user-friendly book on Coleoptera.

This bok provides an antomical key to identification of insect species. t is fun learning what is meant by the vocabulary! then research your species. For an inteelcetual but practical way to reach closer to an insect species, just beware that not all bugs are beetles.

A "kriegy" tells his story
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2004-11-13
"Americans Behind the Barbed Wire" is J. Frank Diggs' memoir of life in a German-run prisoner-of-war camp during World War II. A short author bio at the start of the book notes that after the war Diggs spent nearly 40 years as a writer, reporter, and editor with "U.S. News and World Report."

Diggs recalls serving as an American military officer and being captured by the Germans. He winds up in a POW camp in Poland. The book vividly recalls the realities of life in camp: the cold, lack of sufficient food, and elaborate escape attempts. Most remarkable is the way Diggs and the other "kriegies" (that's a slang term they used for inmates) truly formed a community. They developed their own subculture that resisted the German captors in both blatant and subtle ways. Diggs offers fascinating details about the camp newspaper, the educational system the inmates developed in order to make constructive use of their time, and much more.

Diggs creates affectionate portraits of fellow kriegies who used their talents to make imprisonment more bearable for their fellow Americans. He also discusses the important role played by Henry Soederberg, an international YMCA representative who was allowed to make humanitarian visits to the camp. The book also covers Diggs' odyssey after leaving the camp.

The book includes an appendix with excerpts from the Geneva Convention. Indeed, Diggs' narrative is not just a fascinating personal narrative, but raises issues pertaining to POW treatment that remain relevant. As an intriguing companion text, I would recommend a narrative of Japanese-American internment during WW2, such as Yoshiko Uchida's "Desert Exile" or Jeanne Wakatsuki Houston and James Houston's "Farewell to Manzanar."

Superbly informative, engaging, eye-witness reading.

In Americans Behind The Barbed Wire, author Frank Diggs shares his unique view of World War II that he gained from the inside of Oflag 64, a German POW camp located in Schubin Poland. Diggs and his fellow "kriegies" (German guard slang for prisoners), demonstrates the resoluteness and sense of purpose shared by his fellow POWs. As kriegies they worked and plotted for more food, searched for more heat and warm clothes, worked to improve themselves and their condition, established a camp newspaper to help improve the flow of information and relieve the mind-numbing boredom. Above all, they never stopped striving for their freedom. Americans Behind The Barbed Wire catches a glimpse of history that never made the headlines, but was just as real a war-time condition as aerial bombing, submarine warfare, or amphibious lands. Americans Behind The Barbed Wire also includes a diary of the author's escape from the Germans and (along with many of his fellow prisoners) their involvement in the Russian/American repatriation crises at the end of the war, as well as their eventual return to the United States. Americans Behind The Barbed Wire is a superbly informative, engaging, invaluable contribution to the growing library of World War II personal histories.

Learned, current, and respectful of the text

First, a word on Amos -- he may be counted among the "minor" prophets, but his significance is enormous. Amos was the first of the Hebrew prophets to put his message into writing (as far as we know). His message was revolutionary, introducing themes which are standard in the later prophets: e.g., Amos elevates social mores above ritual sacrifices (5:21-25) and transcends the narrow vision his countrymen had of the Lord as the God of Israel only (9:7). Amos's prophecies were fulfilled in a remarkable way. He was particularly remembered for predicting a major earthquake two years in advance (8:8, 1:1); he also seems to have anticipated the rise of the Assyrian empire before there was any clear evidence for it. In sum, Amos is well worth studying either in his own right or as an introduction to prophetic writings in general.

Which brings us to Paul's commentary on Amos. This book is an excellent aid to one's study of the prophet.

Like all the commentators chosen for the Hermenia series, Paul is learned: the book includes a massive bibliography, categorized into numerous areas of inquiry. Because it is a very recent work, Paul is able to take advantage of ongoing advances in scholarship. (Hermenia also publishes an older, standard commentary by Wolff, but decided it was appropriate to provide an update.) Despite Paul's erudition, the commentary is readily intelligible to readers who do not know Hebrew.

Paul is a very clear writer. He summarizes various points of view in the main text but, when he interacts with other scholars in detail, he places that information in footnotes (which are extensive). Thus the reader can follow the exegesis of the text without being unduly distracted by academic minutia, or turn to the footnotes for detailed argumentation where that is desired.

Paul is conservative in his conclusions. Notably, he defends Amos's authorship of various passages which other commentators regard as interpolations: see his excursus on the doxologies in Amos (4:13, 5:8-9, 9:5-6). He also defends the authenticity of the message of hope which concludes the book. (Other commentators believe it was added for comfort only after the people of Israel had been carried off into exile.) Preachers and teachers will particularly appreciate this aspect of Paul's commentary, since their sermons and lessons are based on the text as it is found in the Bible, not on theoretical reconstructions of it.

In sum, the commentary is highly recommended.

Hermeneia continues to provide a top-notch critical commentary for the scholastic theologian. I would never recommend Hermeneia for the layperson. This commentary was written for someone with some knowledge of the original languages, and some interest in historical context. It is not light reading; however, Shalom M. Paul is an exquisite writer. His use of the English language is colored with simile and metaphor, which makes this reading a great deal more engaging than similar titles. He truly brings Amos to life with vivid imagery likened to the prophet himself. This is a must have for those who are interested in the best biblical scholarship on Amos.

Ampalaya: Nature's Remedy for Type 1 & Type 2 Diabetes is a well-written book about a promising botanical called ampalaya in the Philippines, bitter melon in the U.S. and Momordica charantia by scientists. Written in Frank's crisp, engaging style, Ampalaya begins by delivering a good overview of the diabetes epidemic in the U.S., while also offering a fascinating, and colorful, historical chronicle on diabetes since ancient times. In addition to a well-referenced chapter on the research behind ampalaya and another on mini-case-histories, the book is jam-packed with practical, take-home information on: diabetes complications; reducing risk factors; taking care of your eyes, feet and kidneys; diet and nutrition in diabetes; overweight and exercise; and more. Frank pulls out all the stops when it comes to useful tips and lists of actionable suggestions, as well. All in all, this is much more than a health book about ampalaya; it is an invaluable resource for all people who are concerned about diabetes and interested in learning about a powerful variety of ways to improve their health and fend off the risk factors and symptoms associated with this epidemic disease.

Ancient Celtic Festivals deserves ongoing mention as a fine resource for kids ages 8-12 years, which explains how modern celebrations are rooted in ancient Celtic history and festivals. Links between the ancient rituals and how they are celebrated today require good reading skills but reward with many insights.

Dr. Sweeny's book changed my life. I had a large inguinal hernia but was too afraid to undergo surgery because I didn't want anesthesia. I've seen TV shows where people are wide awake suring surgery but can't do or say anything. I was so scared that I delayed surgery several years during which my hernia grew larger and progressively limited my activities and my quality of life. Now that I've read Dr. Sweeny's book, I understand how anesthesia works and realize that I have a higher chance of being struck by lightning than being awake during surgery. He explained what to expect before and after surgery in plain english and what questions to direct to your anesthesiologist. I've recommended this book to all of my friends, even if they don't need surgery, just because it educated me so well. Dr. Sweeny, thank you for taking away my fear of surgery and giving me my life back!

Frank McCourt has a way with words! His memoir of growing up poor in Ireland, with a drunk for a father and lazy, shiftless mother is written without malice. He and his brothers are left to their own devices to keep themselves fed, warm and clothed when Frank, the oldest is not even four years old. They live in a house where the main floor floods every year and they have to wade through the sewage to live in the remaining room upstairs until the water recedes. They grow so cold that they resort to tearing the walls apart for firewood. And yet his mother needs her cigarettes and his father needs his drink.

Frank's tenacity and humor in the midst of such misery is his salvation. And it is what makes this memoir so poignant. His own parents and grandparents, neighbors and the Catholic church leave Frank and his brothers to their own devices for survival. And they survive! And go to America. And it's a true story.
