A great introduction to state political historyReview Date: 2008-07-04
This book is a must read for any politician, journalist, activist, observer or just plain interested party. Christensen deserves a medal for making the subject matter approachable to the layman. As an historical work, the book ranks among the most active and engaging stories in recent memory.
Perhaps a testament to the editors Christensen has had in his career, the prose is engaging and full of energy. There is hardly a weak spot in the entire book. Whether the reader is on vacation with hours on end or a casual nighttime bookworm reading a few pages a night, "The Paradox of Tarheel Politics" is sure to capture and hold their attention.

A beautiful portrailReview Date: 2001-03-06
The wonderful images along with simple beautiful text which includes some Ethiopian words is just lovely.
It tells the story of a orphan girl Tshai, her selfless gift to the countries ruler and the darstadly thinking of the wicked Jib. The telling is enhanced by the legend of Ethiopian pronounciations and all round is a lovely addition your library if like me you have an Ethiopian child in your home.

Perry Rhodan returns to America after 25 years!Review Date: 2007-03-09
Fan Pro picked a great point in the PR story arc to re-introduce PR to a new generation of readers.
The story reminds me a bit of Harlan Ellison's 'Phoenix without Ashes', the novel that the 1973 TV series 'The Starlost' was loosely based.
The crew of a mining ship is surrepticiously transporting the leader of the Solar Imperium, Perry Rhodan, into the territory of the Akons, in hopes of forging new alliances. They discover a generation ship launched over 10,000 years ago, traveling with a 'cloak', only after one of the mothership's mining pods disappears. What they find on-board is only the beginning of this small saga within the grand scheme of the Rhodan Universe, now at 2422 (Jan 2008) issues and going strong!
The translator did a fanatastic job porting it from the native German and the editors earned their pay.
PLEASE DON'T STOP!!!

Compulsory Reading for Students of IranReview Date: 2000-09-25
This work is particularly valuable, as it is the only first-hand English language study of the Iranian Constitutional Revolution. It is particularly valuable for those readers unable to access works in Farsi, such as Ahmad Kasravi's seminal work on the Constitutional Revolution.
In this work, Brown vividly portrays the machinations of the British, Russian, and Iranian players in the constitutional revolution. One can sense the joy and agony in Browne's work as he describes the initial victory of the constitutionalists, and their eventual defeat at the hands of foreign agents and Iranian traitors.
Amanat's introduction is also valuable for the historical and biographical context it provides. Amanat, a scholar at Yale, has established his position as one the most prominent authors of Iranian history in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries.
Those who enjoy this work, may care to also consider Shuster's work "The Strangling of Persia", also in the Persia observed series.

As a wood anatomist I cannot help feeling that an even more beautiful book could be produced by shifting the focus to anatomy: when magnified these woods would look even better. I guess a palaeobotanist would agree with me that this would make for, from a scientific point of view, a more usable and valuable book.
Nevertheless this is a magnificent piece of work: there are some quite stunning pictures in here.

If you are a diehard Phillies fan, this is for you. If you are a casual Phillies fan, and would like to learn more of the team's history, this is a great place to start. If you are a fan of baseball history in general, I highly recommend The Phillies Encyclopedia.
I can't wait until the next edition comes out!
