Among other things the perfect fish is about fly fishing for striped bass. The perfect fish was created by an artist and therefore has the quirkiness of something birthed from an artists mind. In it kenny gives us his opinions about how to tie flies and shows us that a fly is a little piece of art. He paints scenes of the predator1s world and the world of the baitfish. He intimates on many things, color and light being favorite topics, and relates those intimations to the act of fishing. His thinking is good thinking and it is unique thinking, in my opinion. Through his prose as well as his paintings, which decorate this colorful book, he implores us to agree with his belief that the striped bass is not just a stupid fish, but a perfect fish. Perhaps not everyone can see the magic of what Kenny is saying. The book is dense and by that I mean there1s a lot in there and some of it is pretty profound. A little must be read and then digested and read again, it is a book with which you must have patience. Perhaps kenny1s central theme concerns making flies that are impressions of what they are imitating as opposed to realistic imitations. "What a fish responds or reacts to in a fly," kenny says, "is not exact physical likeness but the illusion of life." Kenny creates flies that give "impressions" of what the bait looks like and argues that impressionistic representations work better, catch more fish. As a painter myself I found some of kenny's philosophies to be helpful not only to my fly fishing but in considering the scope of my life. His thoughts involve stripping ourselves of "cultural conditioning" so we can more fully observe the world around us, perhaps with the innocence of a child."When tying squid flies," kenny says, "it is hard to resist emphasizing their tentacles or their eyes because it is how we have been taught to view them since childhood. When we see them as they actually appear in the water they are quite different than what cultural conditioning says they are." I liked this book when I first flipped through it because it reminded me of times I'd spent with my father pulling a drag net through the mouth of a tidal creek and seeing all the life there, all the shiners, mummichogs, and small green crabs. These crawling swimming things that had peaked my early curiosities while standing in the marsh are the food of the striped bass and are things that kenny portrays beautifully.

When your standing in the water at sunrise and looking out over the horizon your saying to yourself, 'today is the day I'm going to remember what Kenny said in his book", Of course you don't because when you read carefully Kenny says, 'It's not how it's why you fish'.It's why we fish that he talks about in this wonderful account of his world and ours. When my grandson asks why I didn't catch any fish today or why I didn't bring them home, I now know better my ans. Thanks, Kenny.

Haig-Brown in his wrtittings showed how to put one's essence in to fooling fish. While most books on fly tying give information on the mechanics Ken Abrames in this book shows how to incorporate your essence and hopes into the creation of your flies and your approach to the perfect fish, R.L.S. striped bass. Definately worth reading more than once.

A perfect fish is a remarkable accomplishment. Kenny Abrames manages to smoothly meld fly-tying and flyfishing technique, with philosophy and art. The narrative is poetic yet descriptive. The art is alive. The flyfishing information is incredibly interspersed with thoughts on technique, and philosophy. A book you can read and re-read and continue to gain insight and information. Its all there. Not a word or phrase is wasted. A must for any saltwater angler.

Important Message and Worth the Effort
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2004-06-11
Sherosky argues that corporations, like people, have a character and a soul and a set of values--and that molding toward humanistic values and away from those driven by greed is a central mandate for our time. Written well before the 2002-03 round of business scandals, it seems eerily prescient, if a bit dated in places.

A brief excerpt:

"...this whole corporate concept is still somewhat of an enigma. Governments do not know how to deal with it because legally there is this illusion of a lack of the human element. We never sat in conversation that the 'people within corporation X' did something. We just say that 'X did this or that'. We point to a collective entity as a singular, impersonal unit despite the fact that living human beings push the buttons... "Profit is not a sin, but it is the real motive and charter of corporate entities. In order to obtain a profit, those within the structure not only produce products and services, but legally hide if improprieties are used to garner the profit. Corporate structures become havens for profiteers with unscrupulous character.

"Since the corporate entity is not traditionally looked upon as a person, there appears a sense of inhumanity that is truly frightening.

"It explains how oil spills, price fixing and product failures can be treated so cold[ly] that human emotions appear missing. This inhuman quality, although a legal safeguard, is also a key ingredient to all business failures and bad press." (pp.67-68)

While the book is somewhat densely written and could have benefited by a good edit, his message is important and worth the effort.

The Bottom Line !

Review Date: 2002-03-22
With the recent bombshell of the Enron failure, it is becoming increasingly apparent that somethings are amiss in Corporate America. Those "somethings" are explored in this revealing expose' by Sherosky, a veteran himself of corporate structures both large and small. Vince Lombardi, legendary football coach of the Green Bay Packers once said, "winning isn't everything, its the only thing". This attitude has permeated the corporate world - nothing else matters except the "bottom line". Whether a company is a good citizen, or a concerned employer, or environmentaly conscientious has no relevance! Greed is god. Sherosky shows how this manageent philosophy is leaving a lot of money on the table. He counsels that attention to character and virtue in the market place and the workplace would result in ever-growing profits for consumer, employer and employee. If we continue the business practices of the past into the 21st century we will continue to reap the same disfunctional results. This book shows how that can be avoided. Must reading for the progressive and enlightened citizen.

Must reading for everyone who works!

As a Professional Career Coach for women, I can see that the author has obviously spent a great deal of time thinking and researching his work. This is not your usual 'corporate strategy' book -- rather it is a work in progress. Sherosky has brought into focus the main issues between corporate success and spiritual happiness. Does one have to lose one to gain the other -- not according to the author. I agree. You can have both. His chapter on "Tapping the Power of Gender Teamwork" is one of the reasons I recommend his book to my clients. I recommend any professional, seeking a better understanding of the corporate world to read this book.

The Philadelphia Guide: Inpatient Pediatrics fills a significant gap in practical pediatric texts. Harriet Lane has long been the standard, but is difficult to use, impractical at times, and incomplete. This book, which conveniently fits in a white coat pocket, is an indispensible resource for medical students and pediatric residents and fills the holes that Harriet leaves open. It give practical and complete, yet concise information on presentation and management of the diseases commonly encountered by the pediatric inpatient physician. As a new pediatric resident, this book has become the most indispensible resource in my pocket.

As a user of harrriet lane for years...This book goes beyond. As an easy to read, comprehensive resource for almost everything you will see as an inpatient house officer, I would recommend keeping it with you at all times. It is filled with all the questions you find yourself often looking up on those late night calls. It gives you the one line answers you are always looking for. It has information on conditions from the most basic to the most obscure and what you need to know about them. It provides answers to treatment, diagnosis, and guidelines.

Most of all it helps you treat patients, provide better care, and teach you at the same time. It includes chart, bold type, and subject heading formats. This book is AWESOME!!! Get yours today

This book is Simple and touching. Its very simple to read but goes into the depths of her short and in the end devastating life. She had a simple life and she loved it but the last and dark days that she spent in the secret annexe.
further- (beyond this story)
iT turns out that Otto Frank was the only one to survive out of all the secret annex (peter wasn't heard from) everyone else died. If only she had survived the last couple of weeks then she would be free once more.

I really enjoyed the book Anne Frank.

As a sixth grader I really enjoyed the book Anne Frank. The story was about Anne Frank,A brave young Jewish girl about 12 years old and her fourting year old sister. She found out at age 14 years old that she had to put a lot of cloths on. She had to hide in the attic for three years so the Nazis would not find them. It took place in Germany where her family lived. She once lived in a house,If she went to school she would be shot. The Nazis burnt all the Jewish books and pictures. A lot of children hid so they would not be shot because the people that hid them or they would be shot with no questions asked. The only person who survived was her dad, and the reason her mom died first, and Anne and her sister died after. I think the person who reads the book would cry or be really interesting in it. The book is based on her family life as a Jew in Germany.

This is the best book I ever read

I'm a 6th grader. This book is about Anne Frank when she was a young girl. Anne was born on June 12,1929. She had an older sister named Margot. Her parents names were Edith and Otto Frank. Her family lived in Frankfurt for hundreds of years. She had a peaceful life until the Nazis came. Anne Frank died when she was fifteen years old. Then someone found Anne's Frank diary, which got published in 1947. This is the best book I ever read because I like how it is written, telling the story clearly. I like how she did not die until she was fifteen years old. If I was Anne I don't think I would I have lasted that long because I don't think I could take care of myself that long.

As a source of both information and rare photographs, few books can equal Picture History of the Cunard Line. This book includes many little known facts about some of the most famous ships in maritime history. Yet,while it recalls the careers of the better known Cunarders,it also addresses many of the Companies less remembered ships. The great Aquitania who's lengthy term of service included duties throughout both World Wars is finally given the attention it deserves. Virtually all of the companies intermediate steamers are reviewed as well. Because this book encompasses so many of Cunards' ships; and because it presents over 180 of the best photographs ever published on this subject, it should be a treasured addition to any collection. I highly recommend it to all readers particularly those with just a general interest in the subject.

Frank Remkiewicz's drawings comes from an artist who has loved pigs since childhood and been a long-time fan of Freddy the Pig: his fun drawings in Piggy And Dad Go Fishing hold a hint of Freddy with but a life all their own. From being unable to attach a happy worm to a hook to becoming too restless to catch a fish, Piggy doesn't seem to be cultivating the right skills! Highly recommended!

Fried fresh fish for dinner?

This review first appeared in the "Ephrata (PA) Review."

Piggy is excited; he's going fishing with Dad for the first time. They prepare sandwiches, hunt for worms, sit and wait (or squirm impatiently), even catnap!

Dad soon sees this will not be just another fishing trip, because, well, little boys have fresh ways of looking at things. Will they end their day with the delicious fried fresh fish Dad is dreaming of?

Perhaps not, but lucky are those with dads like Piggy's, who take their cues from their young ones, and go with the flow. They and their children invent their own ways of doing things together.

The gentle watercolor and pencil illustrations are good-natured depictions of father and son. Daddy Pig looks relaxed in Hawaiian shirt, floppy hat and glasses. Piggy never removes his bright yellow boots. The illustrator has winsomely captured young boys' body movements and facial expressions.

Piggy and his dad go fishing. I actally had to laugh when I first read this one as it hit so close to home. I have been fishing for over 60 years now, all kinds of fishing, but I must admit that from my first time fishing at the age of three, until now, I still have qualms about baiting a hook with the worm when bait fishing...I simply feel a bit sorry for the worm, not unlike piggy. And like Piggy, I sort of feel for the fish too, even after literally thousands of them being put on the table. The book is well done...a very cute story an the illustrations are great. Piggy acts like the typical child his age going fishing for the first time and dad's reactions are wonderful. Highly recommend this one.

Amusing Little Stories for Brand-New Readers

So many of the absolute beginning readers seem to be more a grouping of words than an actual story. My son loves these books, because each one has a progression with a rather satisfying ending for an eight-page story. My son thinks the booklet about Piggy making a sandwich with his father is about the funniest thing he's ever read, and he tells everyone the ending of the story before he gets to it. Also, the illustrations in this series is nice and bright and colorful--much more pleasant to look at than most of the branded phonics readers. These books are giving my son confidence in reading--he has to sound out most of the words, but they are within his grasp--and he really enjoys showing off his skills with these books. I wish the books grew in levels--they seem to all be for absolute beginners--but I'm happy to have these to begin to build a strong reading foundation.

Great for beginning readers.

Because of work, I have had to read a lot of books on this topic... most of them are dry-textbook reads that you have to slog through. This one was well written - the text was easy to read - the diagrams and examples were interesting, and I found myself gaining new insights because I was actually reading the text instead of skimming it. Mr. Gryna clearly has the years of experience needed to write this kind of book, but he also has the teaching style of one of your favorite teachers.

20 years before anyone in the US heard of ISO 9000, Juran proposed the same ideas. He described comprehensive, documented quality management systems that were backed up by performance metrics and quality audits. Juran also pioneered quality circles and teams long before these ideas became cliche.

I find Juran immensely useful in my quality practice. This book remains one the standard works that I keep going back to. Juran's concepts are much more "applied" than "theoretical". Deming's works seem so distant, and esoteric. Juran has been there, done that. And, his methods work!

First, I should note that a more recent edition (5th edition) is out. I bought this edition used to save money, but it is so good (but slightly out of date, published in 1998) that I will next buy the 5th edition.

The best thing I have to say about this book is it is well-written. It is probably the best-written textbook I have ever read. It has useful case studies and good citations and explanations of relevant court decisions. The one weakness of this book is it does not in my mind spend enough time covering differences between state laws, but that would probably make the book far too long.

This book covers almost everything you need to know about the law and real estate. It covers ownership forms (including JTWROS, tenant in common, joint tennants, etc), liens, buying and selling property, easements, government regulation and zoning, environmental regulation, and much more. I should note that at least this 4th edition is lacking in a discussion of LLC ownership of land and some recent environmental concerns (such as radon), both of which are probably covered in the more recent edition.

I've always held in high regard Hemingway's knowledge, as well as professionalism, when it came to his craft. Less impressed, through the years, I've been with what I've heard/read in regards to him, the person. A good book changes, to varying degrees, a reader's previous perspective. REMEMBERING ERNEST HEMINGWAY did that for me; and for that - to both Frank Simons and James Plath - I am grateful.

Having just finished "Remembering Ernest Hemingway," I am eager to sing its praises! I have taught Hemingway for 30 years, have read all the bios of him--Baker, Reynolds, Hotchner, etc., and enjoyed them all--but this book still manages to surprise and delight the reader with previously unheard anecdotes, unseen photos, and candid, first-person recollections of Hemingway the friend, boxer, fisherman, hunter, and writer. The book is a compilation of interviews with close personal friends and relatives of EH. For instance, his sons, Gregory and Patrick tell what life was like with EH for a father; two men remember their experiences boxing regularly with EH; Charles Thompson, who went on African safari with EH (and was featured in Hemingway's "Green Hills of Africa")tells what it was like to hunt big game with Hemingway; Valerie Hemingway remembers being with EH during wild times in Spain, etc.

Reading each interview is as authentic and fascinating as watching an old home movie. Each person interviewed offers genuine incidents in which Hemingway's candid words and actions reveal the man in his many facets. All in all, this is a thoroughly enjoyable book, a must read for all Hemingway fans. And, as frosting on the cake, the book even has rare photos, some of which I have never before seen: photos of Hemingway and Gary Cooper; photos of Hem's boat, "The Pilar,"; photos of Hemingway with the Italian woman on whom he based his novel "Across the River and Into the Trees," etc. "Remembering Ernest Hemingway" is a wonderful glimpse of the elusive writer. I most highly recommend it.

I am much closer to knowing the man

Most of the interviews in this book were with the people Hemingway lived and shared with. These interviews are not about the myth but more the person he was.

Like living with Hemingway.

After decades of reveling in the myth of Hemingway I now know the man they call Papa Hemingway. The book holds many intimate surprises as told first hand by those who were his friends and his sons. The book is easy and friendly like sipping daiquiries on the verando in the keys and talking among friends. But it is also voyeuristic in feeling as you listen to the interviews and hear what everyday people who knew him had to say. It is intimate in content and refreshing to the senses. I knew the myth and I now know the man. I still like him. This is a good read.
