Frank Rega's book on Padre Pio will take you into an intimate look with a soul united to God. Through his sufferings, Padre Pio became conformed to Christ, not only spiritually, but physically as well. His closeness to Christ was seen through his sufferings, which he united to God's own suffering, to help save souls from destruction. Padre Pio's love for soldiers gives me great consolation, since I have a son serving in Iraq. As a lay Franciscan, I pray to him daily to intercede for my family, and to protect, watch over, and guide my children to Jesus.. Thank you, Frank, for writing such a wonderful book!!

My Dad Would Have Been Proud

My father was one of the GIs talked about so many times in this book. His personal friendship with Padre Pio changed his life. Coming back from WWII, dad spent endless evenings showing his movies and slide shows about Padre Pio to church groups and anyone interested. It was a mission to him.

Dad always wanted to publish a book about his lifetime friendship with this holy man who is now a saint. Dad passed away without doing so, but some of his personal notes were used by Mr. Rega in this book... as were letters that he wrote to others concerning Padre Pio. As my mother and entire family is, dad would have been very pleased with Mr. Rega's book.

This is not merely a manuscript. It is an owner's manual for a soul. The stories within are enlightening, fascinating, encouraging and expertly handled by Mr. Rega's unique gift as a talented author. Not only is it well written, the content makes it almost impossible to put down before finishing.

This book is a "must" for anyone interested in Padre Pio.
Highly, highly recommended!

Frank Rega has gathered in one book all the stories--many never before told--of the first Americans, especially GIs, who discovered Padre Pio early on, at a time when you could still get near him, speak to him, kiss his gloved hand. I met Padre Pio briefly two years before he died. By then the world had begun to make inroads into this long forgotten mountain, and because of his age and frailty, Pio was guarded by friars who protected him from the rushing waves of people (much as Jesus was surrounded by crowds). But it wasn't so during the war. Rega writes about the GIs--battered soldiers, exhausted fliers, engineers--who took the road that wound up the lonely, barren mountain to San Giovanni Rotondo, some in trucks and jeeps, some even walking, to find this rumor of a "holy man" they'd heard about at the airbases below. Prompted by faith or curiosity in the midst of battle (perhaps, I have always thought, spurred on to a secret mission they were completely unaware of), they found the holy man to be a conduit of miracles, a discerner of souls called "a saint." They found a stigmatist, who became known as "The Living Crucifix." And all of the GIs spoke of Pio's profound Holy Mass conveying a real presence. I'd read snippets in other Pio books about their awe, their standing in the back of the tiny, crowded 16th- century church, soldiers but also saints, in a way, answering the call for God and country. I had read of their visits to Mary Pyle, the first American to make her way up the mule path to Pio in 1923 (a great story recounted in detail in Rega's book), but I always longed to know more, more! What was it like during the war, when sacrifice was a daily thing? How did Pio inspire these men? Some even became priests! What did the GIs say to Padre Pio? And Pio to them? Well here it all is! And Rega does a sound, thorough, updated investigation of "The Flying Monk" mystery that haunts the legends of Padre Pio--Pio seen in the sky, stopping American bombers from unloading their unused bombs near San Giovanni Rotondo before returning to their base.
This is an unusual Pio book, putting the American and GI part of the Padre Pio story all together so we don't have to chase everywhere for the puzzle pieces to make the grand tapestry. The metaphor and meaning of this story is that we must search for Jesus, look for Our Savior, climb mountains, if necessary, to find him in ourselves.

And oh yes, that possible secret mission of the GIs, for which it seems they were a great instrument in a plan of God we can only guess at? To carry back Saint Pio to this land of faith--"the good America!" I loved this book!

I have just finished reading your book and I have found it a very interesting read. My only regret is that I did not have a copy four or five years ago, as many of the areas you point out as possible pitfalls, I have already managed to blunder into through trial and error. I have a lot to learn about the music industry and what I have learned has only been from some very costly and time wasting ventures on my behalf. I hope to avoid many of these in the future. As I read through your book my empathy increased and each chapter seemed to echo some of my more bitter disappointments, but I also began to see some of my triumphs stemming from similar ideas that you had proposed, so I know that I am at least heading in the right direction. All in all, a good concise, practical book that I will refer to for further reference. Thank you Frank Fara and Patty Parker.

I purchased this book orginally over 12 years ago, when my children were young and while I was running a family home child care business. The kids and I loved it! It's full of wonderful ideas for everyday activities using "recycable" household items such as card board tubes, newspaper, string... many different ideas to keep the projects interesting and the kids busy creating. I recently ordered this book for my grandson and family so as he grows they can enjoy many of the activities together, his mother did growing up.

My favorite book as a child!

I used to check it out from the library at my elementary school as often as possible and I still remember some of the projects I made (stained glass windows made out of paper, crayons, and vegetable oil, anyone?). FULL of crafts and fun things on all time and skill levels - perfect for building creativity for kids of all ages. I would recommend this for babysitters, kids, parents, or anyone that needs crafty inspiration!!!

I think that this is the first book that I have read, that is truly meant for the person that's grieving. My husband has recently passed away from aggressive brain tumor, after two and a half years of fighting. We both were only 26, and not even three years married, when all of a sudden I was alone. I still don't understand why he died; I'm still angry and confused. But reading this book, helped me realized that I have a right to feel that way. That there should be no expectations from me, as to how am I grieving. The author goes on explaining in detail how the loss of a loved one, will emerge to be an individual journey. No two are the same. You should listen to your body and let yourself feel the pain, let yourself grieve...for as long as your body, mind and heart need it.

I would definitely recommend this book to anyone, who has lost a loved one. It would be a great book for those that know somebody, that's grieving and want to learn of the best way to help them with their process. - many very valuable lessons to learn.

I Shot Bigfoot and Other Stories is overall a very good collection of short stories. The stories share one overarching similarity with regard to the locale, McCall, Idaho and the surrounding area. If you've never been, you need to see it, as it's some of the most beautiful country you'll see.

As for the stories they play off of the landscape and folklore of the area and bring these to life.

The books title story, is a very funny and an inventive take on the Bigfoot legend.

The author's writing style moves along quickly with dialogue between the characters. This makes for a quick read. However, in some cases like the Dog Man of Poverty Flats, I felt it went a little too quickly.

The only detractions of the book was the formatting of the paragraph style. In my copy it seemed a little confusing. Also the cover art is a great concept but bad execution. It gets the point across though.

This is the author's first book and hopefully not his last.

enjoy.

This is not an in-depth, philosophical treatment of writing (though some may say the author accomplishes it indirectly), but an example after example fun activity tool for teachers--sprinkled with nuggets of wisdom throughout. For those who find such things useful (I don't necessarily) this latest edition includes rubrics, portfolio assessment, and writing across the curriculum. Even if you find only a small portion helpful, the purchase is worth the price. Suitable for primary through middle school.

Incoterms for Americans

Author: Frank J Reynolds

Average review score:

Excellent Publication
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2007-05-18
Frank Reynolds has produced a comprehensive interpretation of the global language of international trade in a format that is easily understandable by Americans involved in international commerce. First published in 1936 by the Paris-based International Chamber of Commerce (ICC), Incoterms 2000 are the latest revised set of 13 international commercial terms recognized as the standard trade terms of international business.

Used by importers/exporters, they define the roles, responsibilities and obligations of buyers/sellers in transactions involving the international movements of goods and help to eliminate misunderstandings as to the term of trade by which a particular transaction is being conducted. They help define the point at which the responsibilities, risks and obligations of the seller end and begin for the buyer and the required documents that must be generated for official and commercial purposes.

As some of the Incoterms, when defined, may be in conflict with similar terms of sale (such as EX Works, FOB) as used for domestic business and found in the official United States legal code - the Uniform Commercial Code (UCC), the author thoroughly explains the difference and highlights the adjustments needed when considering similar Incoterms for international transactions.

The book clearly describes the meaning of each Incoterm, explains the buyer-seller responsibilities under each term and illustrates what a typical pro-forma invoice would reflect on a proposed export transaction. With each Incoterm described, it also offers an American perspective on best practices and recommendations from the author's numerous years of trade experience and his enviable position as the US delegate on the ICC drafting committee that revised the terms that resulted in Incoterms 2000.

Of particular interest especially to inexperienced American exporters, the author offers some very important caveats covering such areas as port customs, insurance considerations, potential confusions in regards to the difference between shipment and delivery terms, the use of appropriate terms that best fit particular transactions, compliance with US Export Control and Incoterm limitations. Although published in 1999, this edition is still up-to-date as the subject matter it addresses is still current as of the date of this review in 2007. Readers may, however, be mindful that the reference made in the publication to the Uniform Customs and Practices for Documentary Credit (UCP500) - the rules that govern letters of credit transactions - will be replaced by a revised set of rules (UCP600) on July 1, 2007.

Since the new UCP600 rules no longer provide for 'revocable' credits, it will no longer be necessary to stipulate in the payment term section of the pro-forma invoice that the letter of credit should be 'irrevocable' as reflected in those relevant sections in Incoterms for Americans. A minor editorial detail of omitting the currency in which costs are reflected in pro-forma invoices on pages 103, 104 and 110 should be French Francs, US Dollars and US Dollars respectively. The author would agree that such seemingly insignificant details of omission would create a discrepancy, delaying payment, in an invoice presented to a nominated bank for a letter of credit transaction.

As one with over 25 years of foreign trade experience, I would highly recommend this well written volume as a desk reference guide for any American foreign trader who desires a working knowledge, understanding and application of Incoterms 2000.

Technical topic made easy to understand

Review Date: 2001-03-01
After I first read Mr. Reynold's predecessor book on Incoterms I felt I finally understood this technical topic. The new book, fully revised for Incoterms 2000, follows the same format. Each chapter is devoted to one of the 13 Incoterms so it can be easily digested. Each chapter contains an easy to read scenario of how the Incoterm may be used in a real international trade transaction and how it affects all other phases of the transaction including the ability or inability to collect payment.

The most valuable feature is the ending section of each chapter, entitled "American Perspective." It discusses how Americans should or should not use this particular term, or at least be aware of any caution flags.

Incoterms for Americans is a valuable commentary on an important topic.

Excellent book for people in this field

I found this book to be full of information. Instead of giving a vague and general outline of the Incoterms (for example, just listing EXW as buyer pays all shipping), Reynolds go full bore into the subject with what if's scenarios, detailed look at each one and tells you how each contract is implemented and the limits of each term. He even put copies of pro formas for some of the incoterms!

Considering the fact that this book is more than half the price of the ICC book and tailored to Americans, I highly recommend it!

The Definitive Work

No sane person reads about INCO terms for fun, and if your work requires that you understand the details of international quotes & shipping then this is a required reference work. The author, who sat on the international drafting committee, is perhaps as knowledgable on this subject as any American. He also teaches an excellent seminar on the subject.

This book is a wonderful history of the saving some of the Indiana Dunes for our use today. Dudley's pictures were used in the early days of trying to get the dunes set aside for future generations. It also is the history of landscape art in the late 1800's to the mid 1900's. The paintings are beautiful landscapes.

This book is a testament to the fact that, contrary to public opinion, there are more things than cornfields in Indiana. Indiana is home to a diversity of unique landscapes and habitats not the least of which are the Lake Michigan dunes. Reproductions of Frank V. Dudley's brilliant impressionist paintings bring this glorious landscape to the fore in this scholarly tome. We learn from "The Indiana Dunes Revealed" that Dudley's work stretches far beyond artistic endeavor. He was also one of the leading U.S. environmentalists during the first half of the twentieth century. The only thing better than this book is viewing Dudley's many sumptuous paintings or actually standing on the sand overlooking the lake. Dudley convinces this reviewer that I am actually on an Indiana beach feeling the wind blow against my face and the surf move beneath my feet.

Frank Dudley was a gifted artist who became passionately interested in the grass-roots campaign to save the Indiana dunes from predation by Northwest Indiana's steel mills, other industrial encroachment, and pollution. For years, he captured the wild beauty of the region on canvas and, as his fame spread, so did his message. His painting of the 1917 Indiana Dunes Pageant, a sweeping outdoor presentation that attracted over 25,000 viewers willing to trek across sand dunes to see it, remains one of the only eyewitness paintings of the event still extant. This book chronicles Dudley's development as a painter and his life in the dunes; the plates are superb, and if you were unable to view them at Valparaiso University's recent exhibition, this keepsake volume will be the next best thing to seeing his original works firsthand. As an aside, I went to the Dudley exhibit at Valparaiso University, where the book was selling at list price. A few mouse clicks later, I had ordered the book at a deep discount at Amazon.com. Three more days, and it was in my hands. It doesn't get much better than that!

Recommended for supplemental reading lists in the areas of environmental studies and American Midwestern history.

The Indian Dunes Revealed: The Art Of Frank V. Dudley is written and edited by James R. Dabbert (Senior Lecturer in English, Illinois Institute of Technology, Chicago) with the assistance of J. Ronald Engle (Professor of Social Ethics, Meadville Theological School of Lombard College), Joan Gibb Engel (an activist and writer on Dunes ecology), i9ndependent art historian Wendy Grennhouse , and William H. Gerdts (Professor Emeritus of Art History at the Graduate School of the City University of New York). Frank V. Dudley (1868-1957) was a native of Wisconsin who studied at the Art Institute of Chicago and eventually established a long exhibition record while dedicated more than forty years of his professional life as a landscape painter to the promotion and preservation of the Indiana Dunes - a unique geographical region enjoying state and federal protection while providing ecologists with a unique and truly 'living laboratory' for their studies. "The Indiana Dunes" is a team project that superbly showcases Dudley's life and work including 150 color reproductions of his paintings and another 70 black-and-white images. Because of the continual conflict between development and preservation over the decades, some of Dudley's paintings are the only record we have left of lost dunescapes. Also available in a hardcover edition, "The Indiana Dunes Revealed" is a splendid addition to academic library American Art History collections, and particularly recommended for supplemental reading lists in the areas of environmental studies and American Midwestern history.

This book guides you step-by-step through the world of the Maximum-security US Penitentiary on Alcatraz Island. Written by a former correctional officer, this book offers first-hand views of things occuring in the institution.

This book has a history of Alcatraz, from the prisoners to the closing to the present. I highly reccomend this book for anyone's reading enjoyment.

I read this book after I saw the movie "The Rock." After reading this book I knew about everything about the schedule, inmates, and basic inmate life. I didn't need to read another Alcatraz book. It's simply great.

"Investing by the Numbers"

Jarrod W. Wilcox, Ph.D., CFAPublished by Frank J. Fabozzi Associates © 1999 Jarrod Wilcox, Director of Currency and Overseas Products at PanAgora Asset Management, wrote this guide to quantitative investing over a 14 month period, using most of his evenings and weekends to complete this illuminating work. The underlying theme throughout is "Be scientific, but don't believe in science for the purpose of investing." He warns quantitative investors against making easily avoidable mistakes, which he describes through witty narration and an assemblage of easy to follow charts and tables. Formulas are included for those who wish to delve into the mathematics, but in general these are easy to follow and the reader does not have to be a mathematician to understand the author's train of thought. This book manages to show the humorous side of quantitative investing and I suspect the more investment experience the reader has, the more he or she will laugh. He explains the ins and outs of indexing, comparing the practice to betting on past winners, which is a form of momentum investing that is destabilizing to markets. The fascinating issue of "learning taking place in the markets" is covered in detail, an important concept to fundamental analysts as well as those who are quantitatively oriented. Of course this leads to the interesting question of "What is the half-life of private science?" And the observation that successful active management can never be accepted science because destructive imitation by others will soon take away whatever performance advantages one initially had. The author challenges so much of what is current investment thought, subjecting commonly accepted ideas to his rigorous analysis and leaving the reader a more knowledgeable investor for having read this excellent book. I highly recommend this book to professional investors, it will, in the author's words, "change your life. END

This is a very densely packed and fairly technical book. It is a terrific explanation of the realities of managing investments using quantitative technicques in a professional manner.

It exposes all the complexities and real life issues. It is full of insights and ideas.

Very hard work but worth it.

Superb blend of theory and practice

This book is hard work. I had to read it twice, quite slowly.

It will suit people who are comfortable with some math. It is dense and requires concentration to read and understand. Overall the approach is quantitive, although he follows wherever that leads, e.g. into some technical things.

What I like is the combination of theory and practical experience and the way both add value to the other.

The book is worth it for the discussions about market structures and dynamics alone. Full of insight and ideas.

Highly Recommended!

This book is a must read for anyone who attempts to apply quantitative techniques to practical investment problems. Jarrod Wilcox teaches you all the things your professor in school was afraid to tell you.
