This is one of those extraordinarily rare books that inspires me to buy not one, but 100...for family, friends, and colleagues. The idea is so simple and so brilliant but more important, it is beautifully executed. Truly inspired virtuoso selections, gorgeous photography and wonderful writing-- rarely, does one find all of these qualities in one body of work. My only regret is that the book wasn't available during the holiday season or I would have used it for ALL of my X-mas gifts. With tremendous respect, LCLJ

Not just the famous. Not the infamous. Not the obvious. This amazing book actually delivers on the promise of the title. I didn't realize how jaded I was until I sat down and moved through the text and images. Simply brilliant. Don't miss the experience and integrity of this book. ADDED BONUS: The book's superlative design and extraordinary photographs.

What's great here, in addition to stellar photos and high production values (what kind of paper is this?) is the surprising quality of the selection of the people. I like seeing boxers and map makers, basketball players and glass blowers set next to each other.

Joseph Campbell's sadly over-used expression "Follow your bliss" is personified in the 40 profiles that fill the pages of The Virtuoso. What a revelation to find that the world possesses such remarkable individuals in places we might least expect to find them. The Virtuoso says much about taking risks, about going as far as you can to arrive at a place that is larger than yourself. Love, and a dash of madness, are at the core of every choice a Virtuoso makes, shaping the lives of these extraordinary talents in the most unimagined ways, and those who come into contact with them. It takes a vision to see the vision in others. Clearly this author has that. Bravo!

Wayne Gretzky's retirement from hockey seems a fitting occasion to remark on the phenomenal collection of virtuosos Ken Carbone has gathered together in his new book. The gift of a Virtuoso like Gretzky, and of this book, is the realization that absolute focus and dedication to a passion can lead one beyond oneself. That message resounds like a gong through the handsomely designed pages and expressive photographs of The Virtuoso. The thrill of sharing a Virtuoso's talent is the transcendence it offers, the visceral feeling that one is witnessing, in the Eastern sense, life lived fully in the moment. Inspiration, indeed.

I recently purchased this book since it was directly related to my job (Purchasing). My friend went to a college that used this same book and it had looked interesting.

After I bought it from Amazon (lowest price, believe me), I was very satisfied. The author explains all topics in a clear manner and provides interesting case examples. This is one book that I will use as reference over and over. I can't imagine myself without it now. I also can't imagine a better business law book.

My wife and I purchased West's Business Law, 7th ed. through the University of the Pacific bookstore and were generally pleased with it. We have referred to it on numerous occasions to understand legal concepts at school, as well as in our private lives. However...The copy we received was defective. It was missing everything between appendix page 212 and glossary page G-11. I have e-mailed the publisher, but received no response. I will probably order ANOTHER copy of the book (this time through amazon.com) and hope that this copy isn't defective. Because of the difficulty in getting a response from the publisher, I recommend ordering through a reputable retailer like amazon.com (which focuses on customer service as a priority).

The Wizard of Oz is a great boook. It is both interseting and fun. I recomend this book to everyone. I really enjoyed reading it , and would read it again! Throughout the book there are many suspenseful moments, wondering wether or not Tinman will get his heart, Lion will get his courage , Scarcrow will get his brains, or if Dorothy will get back to Kansas to her Aunt Em and Uncle Henry. Although it differs from the movie in mant ways, it is still a great book!

The Wizard of Oz written by L. Frank Baum is a wonderful book about a young girl who goes on an adventure full of excitement and fun. Dorothy the main character lives on a small country farm in Kansas with her Aunt, Uncle, and small dog, Toto. One day a twister comes over their country farm and whisks Dorothy along with her little dog away to a make believe land called Oz. There she is greeted by the people who live there. She asks them how she can get home to Kansas. They tell her that the Great Oz will help get her home. But before she heads on her way to Oz the Good Witch of the North kisses her on the forehead and says that with that kiss no one can harm her. So she and Toto head on their way to Oz. On her way she meets The Scarecrow who wants a brain, a Woodman made of tin who wants a heart and a Cowardly Lion who wants courage. These four new friends eimbark on an adventure to the great city of Oz. Will they all get their wishes? Find out when you read the Wizard of Oz. I loved this book because not only did it have fantasy but it is a great book for all ages. I recomend it to anyone who loved being a child.

I, like most kids, have seen the movie The Wizard of Oz, but I've also read the book.I checked the book out of my school library in the 5th grade (I'm now in the 6th grade.)Even though I read tons and love to read I fully intended not to read the book, because I'd seen the movie. Finding I had nothing to read I read The Wizard of Oz. It was a wonderful book. I read it in a very short period of time. The movie left out action and feeling. You could actually experience to mood and there was more detail to the book. I've also read some of the other Wizard of Oz books too. All of the Wizard of Oz books are great and I highly praise Baum's work!

The Wonderful World of Oz radio plays are a must for any Baum Oz fans, these are truly faithful adaptations of L. Frank Baum's first five Oz books.
Jerry Robbins's and the Colonial players deserve a lot of praise, the quality of the production is excellent.
The actors bring to life our cherished Oz characters with enthusiasm, lots of humour and Dorothy (Amy Strack) is marvellous she plays Dorothy the way Baum wrote her happy , intelligent, earnest and confident! A true all round Amercan girl.
Just sit back and close your eye's and let the music and sound effects whisk you down the yellow brick road to Oz!
For those out there who are upset at there not being many, prospects of sequels to the films at the moment, this is the next best thing.
The efforts in this productiion are those of any great film or television series and I would compare them to any of the great B.B.C. radio productions.
For those who have never known anymore about Oz than the Wizard of Oz M.G.M.film, if you love this then you'll love the books and will never want to look back.
I wait in anticipation of the next instalment it will be money well spent!

Superbly performed by Jerry Robins and The Colonial Radio Players, five of L. Frank Baum's stories of the lands and characters of Oz come vividly to life in a true "theater of the mind" experience for listeners of all ages. The Wonderful Wizard Of Oz is a flawlessly produced, ten cassette, audiobook anthology which includes The Wonderful Wizard Of Oz (151 minutes); The Marvelous Land Of Oz (138 minutes); Ozma Of Oz (127 minutes); Dorothy And The Wizard In Oz (133 minutes); and The Road To Oz (134 minutes). A very highly recommended gift for any family with children, The Wonderful Wizard Of Oz comes in a colorful, sturdy, plastic album making it ideal for school and community library collections as well.

First off, I never knew that there was more than one Oz book. This series includes the first five Oz stories from the creative mind of L. Frank Baum. I purchased this for my daughter, and have to admit that it is very well done. The stories, characters, music and sound effects have kept her (and the entire household)entertained for hours (which is so much better than having us vegging out infront of the TV). Congratulations to the people at the Colonial Radio for doing such a fine job, with any luck, they will do all the remaining Oz books. Our whole family recommends that you give this series a listen.

"The Wonderful World of Oz" is one of the few completely faithful dramatic adaptations of works by L. Frank Baum, the author of "The Wizard of Oz," ever to be produced. It is an audio adaptation of Baum's first five Oz books -- "Wizard" and the first four of the thirteen sequels he wrote to "Wizard." Like any adaptation it contains a few changes, but they are tiny -- to give Oz fans an idea of their magnitude, the biggest change in the whole set of tapes is that the Woggle-Bug is inexplicably called the "Woogle-Bug" throughout.

There are few or no weak links in the cast. The performers who appear as Dorothy and the Scarecrow deserve special praise, but there were only two or three performers I couldn't warm up to, and others may feel differently. Amy Strack's Dorothy is almost in the same league as those of Judy Garland and Fairuza Balk (in Disney's "Return to Oz"); her interpretation of the role, however, is quite different from theirs. Strack's Dorothy is only seldom tearful and sentimental like Garland's, and never somber and introspective like Balk's. She is cheerful, determined, and courageous in the face of every situation -- a wonderful role model for young girls. Strack even manages to make Dorothy sound older in each successive story (since the five books adapted by this production take place over several years; Dorothy probably ages from about 6 to about 10). "Wonderful World" was recorded over only six months, so this subtle but wonderful effect is due to Strack's skill as an actress. As a fan of the Oz books, I recognize Strack's Dorothy as Baum's own conception of the character at last brought to life.

One of "Wonderful World"'s greatest glories is Jeffrey Gage's memorable musical score. Certainly one of its greatest moments comes when Dorothy and her friends first enter the Emerald City and the music by itself manages to convey the City's beauty and glory. The sound effects and stereo production are also superb -- for the full effect, listen to this set on headphones.

"Wonderful World" **is** wonderful, like the books on which it is based. Buy it for your children, for your library, for anywhere where children with access to a tape recorder will find it. It represents a kind of beauty, hope and love that we need now more than ever before.

THIS IS A CLASSIC!

The Wonderful World of Oz by the Colonial Radio Theater is, well . . . wonderful! I remember reading these books as a child and listening to these tapes was like visiting with long lost friends.

This is not the MGM movie - it's better! The 10 cassette tape set allows us to travel with Dorothy and her friends through the first five Oz books. The stories faithfully follow L Frank Baum's original adventure stories and the Colonial Radio Players have given the immortal characters voice and sparkle. I found the casting particularly effective and applaud the actors for creating characters based on the text of the books and not on memories of the movie. It's also a treat to hear the voices of previously unheard friends such as; Jack Pumpkinhead, Shaggy Man, Ozma and HM Wogglebug TE, not to mention the dozens of animals and people they encounter. From storks, to field mice, Munchkins to Mangaboos they have all been brought brilliantly to life in this production. I have to mention the original music which is extraordinary, from traveling music, to the marching band of OZ, to a music box winding down at the end of the last tape the music dances us along through Oz. The final puzzle piece that brings these classic stories to vibrant life is the attention to detail in the sound effects. You hear the Tin Man walking, the crackle of a hearth fire, even the rustle of straw as Scarecrow gives Dorothy a hug, it all combines to pull you into the adventures and keep you there.

Whether you listen to these tapes in small bits or extended listening sessions you will want to go back again and again to the Wonderful World of OZ.

I thoroughly enjoyed reading, You Only Blow Yourself up Once - Confessions of a World War Two Bomb Disposaleer, by J. Frank Durham as told to Doug Hay. The author dedicated his book to the members of World War II U.S. Navy Bomb Disposal, Mine Disposal and Explosive Ordnance Units past and present. The book is a first person account by an early member of the Navy's Bomb Disposal (BD) School during WWII and his assignment on Guadalcanal in the Solomon Islands. Following the Pearl Harbor attack, J. Frank Durham, a lawyer from Greencastle, Indiana volunteered for the Navy and the newly established Navy Bomb Disposal School. Frank graduated from the first all-enlisted class, Class #4, on 4 July 1942 at the Washington Naval Yard.

Aviation Ordnance Man (AOM) first class petty officer (1/c) Frank Durham arrived in Guadalcanal in December of 1942 and was assigned to the U.S. Naval Advanced Base (NAB), 145th Bomb Disposal Unit. The two-man unit consisted of Lt. (jg) Homer S. Anderson and Frank. They established their shop next to Henderson Field. At the time a Navy Bomb Disposal unit consisted of one officer and one petty officer. Frank's honest account tells how he and some other enlisted guys got involved in the Japanese war souvenir trade and an alcohol distillery business on the island. He also tells of being on a ship that was torpedoed and having to abandon ship. In November 1943, Frank received a field commission to ensign and joined the ranks of other "mustangs," enlisted men earning commissions. Frank departed Guadalcanal on 25 November 1943 for stateside duty until war's end and returning to civilian life. The book describes life on Guadalcanal from December 1942 to November 1943 and the many bomb disposal missions that Frank participated in.

John D. Bartleson Jr., CWO4, USN (Retired), and former Historian for the Navy Explosive Ordnance Disposal Association wrote the Forward to the book. Appendix A in the book recalls the stories of three Japanese soldiers on Guadalcanal from their captured diaries. Appendix B is a collection of bomb disposal stories called Stories Told Out of School. Bartleson wrote an account of Lord Charles Henry George "Wild Jack" Howard, 20th Earl of Suffolk and 13th Earl of Berkshire who became Britain's Chief Field Research and Experimental Officer at the Directorate of Scientific Research and was posthumously awarded the George Cross for his bravery in France and his early work in British Bomb Disposal. Edwin R. "Ed" Gropp tells about his accident on Guadalcanal on 15 April 1943 and his postwar treatment when he returned to civilian life. There's a story about Robert W. "Ike" Eigell, Commander, USN (Retired) entitled, A Legend in Explosive Ordnance Disposal. There is an excerpt from Eigell's book Recollections of a Mustang, entitled Monkeys of Guam. And About That Brass Monkey, a story that was printed in the August 2001 issue of The Disposaleer tells of the origin of a very famous phrase. Lieutenant William "Bill" Shriner's story entitled William Shriner - A Strong Voice on D-Day and Afterwards recalls the first German plane shot down by a surface vessel the USS ANCON (AGC-4) at Omaha Beach. Draper Kauffman and His Bomb Disposal School -the Aftermath tells about Rear Admiral Draper L. Kauffman and the birth of the Navy Bomb Disposal School. Mark Rivinus, Commander, USN (Retired) wrote The Final Disposal Job of BD School. The school was disbanded on 31 October 1945.

By the end of the war, after running 78 classes, 1,050 officers and enlisted men out of 1,559 students graduated from the U.S. Navy Bomb Disposal School. Seven Navy Bomb Disposal officers and two enlisted men were killed performing bomb disposal duties in WWII.

The 156 page paperback book is well illustrated with bomb disposal cartoon humor, 15 pages of photos, and an index.

The reviewer Mike R. Vining is a retired U.S. Army Sergeant Major who served in the army from 1968 to 1999 in the Explosive Ordnance Disposal and Special Operations field.

This book catches your attention if by nothing else than its title. You Only Blow Yourself Up Once, is a first-hand account of a bomb disposal expert serving in the Pacific during World War Two.

Specifically, he arrives in Quadalcanal after the hostilities had quieted down considerably. He spends the remainder of his service time, taking apart unexploded bombs, torpedoes, and making recommendations on what type of explosive to present the Japanese military with. Interesting aspects of this book include a commando mission to defuse a bomb some island locals didn't appreciate.

The nice thing about this book is it really makes you appreciate what the early EOD servicemen were doing. They were a brand-new all-volunteer section of the Navy dealing with some of the most dangerous activities imaginable. After all, defusing a failed bomb that someone dropped on you must take real guts. It was interesting to note no one wanted this guy's job!

I also enjoyed the humor in this book. It's a nice easy read. An ambitious person could finish it in a weekend. But it has a lot of additional sources for further information. Most of all it does a nice job in describing the birth of this unique form of service.

This book gives all pertinent information regarding many bars in L.A. The descriptions of setting and atmosphere are accurate and it even provides history and interesting stories and facts about L.A. bars. It provides a variety of different bars in L.A., from the most trendy, hip places, to the divey hole-in-the-walls. I've been to most of these places and frequent some, but this book makes me want to try each bar mentioned!

This was probably the best guide to bars I have seen for Los Angeles. The writing is witty and the choice of bars is great. My only complaint is the layout. It would be cleaner to list the bars in the appendix by area and attractions, rather than just one big list. If you live in L.A., this is a great book to own, if you want to discover a few new places.

Frank has put together a great selection of bars from Santa Monica to Pasadena. He loads each review with little tidbits that are seldom known by even the most travel worn Angelenos: Irish commanders leading Mexican troops past the current day Molly Malone's, the biggest sports bar in the world on Santa Fe Street (which unfortunately closed at Prohibition), and Walt Disney's first studio...just down the street from the Ye Olde Rustic Inn.

It's a good book to have laying next to your Zagats guide when planning an excursion to a new part of town.

THis book is a great trail map for bars in Los Angeles. Mr. Mulvey is a truly likable man with a genuine interest in the semi-lost tradition of decent dives. The format of the book is convienent and has within it, a lot of interesting facts and anecdotes. If you are interested in bars, or if you aren't, this is the book for you. It will bring you up to speed about what's cool in LA.

Great story. Actually, I should say stories. Glenn Frank skillfully weaves two stories together and keeps us reading to find how they are linked and how they turn out.

I loved this book

Glenn Frank hits a home run with his first visit to the plate. This is a moving and compelling novel, a taut and involving story that's a kind of house of mirrors of reflections on reflections on the meaning of life, where form and content work beautifully together to tell an engrossing story. Think of this terrific novel as a combination of Isaac Bashevis Singer, O. Henry, and Tolstoy's Death of Ivan Ilych--there are probably better comparisons, but that's the closest I can get to right now. This is a must read for anyone who likes novels that make you both think and feel, and who like a stunning ending.

This book is great. It evokes strong memories of a world at war and the human side of love, tragedy and redemption. It starts out with parallel stories decades apart and for a time the reader doesn't quite know how they're related. After a time you're investd in both story lines and it doesn't matter. The story comes together beautifully in the end and makes it a very rewarding experience.

A must read

Author Glenn Frank gives us characters and settings so rich in emotional and historical reality that the reader feels transported to another time and place. The unique and wonderful use of parallel story lines hooks the reader from the beginning and never lets go, even as the stories converge in the books heartfelt and touching ending. This is a fantastic novel, which I highly recommend for anyone who enjoys a fresh new voice and engrossing stories that give insight into base humanity and it's many manifestations such as; discovery, loss, horror, love, honor, cruelty, respect and redemption.

It is well known that Picasso was heavily influenced by African Art.
And before him, the French cubism school with its leader Georges Braque borrowed its forms and shapes from drawings on African caves walls.
However a major distinction in the artistic expression of French cubism and ethnic African primitive art remained self-explanatory and a dividing screen between an ornamental European art and a pure rudimentary African art so true to its nature.
African art does not embellish a theme. It evolves around it and expresses it in honest naïveté.
A polished European art is an ornamental expression.
African art is traditions and raw feelings expressed in utmost honesty.
You will understand its importance in the galleries of breathtaking illustrations in the book.
The teacher will widen his knowledge, and the student will expand his appreciation of African arts by reading this book.

The book is a mosaic of colors, the birth of unspoiled art expression, and a legacy of uncorrupted primitive beauty that transcended the dark caves of Africa.

A very British take on the African culture. Detailed Oriented and exceptional information followed by great illustrations and a realm of photographs to break up the text. A careful read is recommended to fully understand the text due to the fact that it is a higher level read.

This is one of the best and highly extensive books on African Art. I enjoyed it from beginning to end. The content describing the motifs, dewellings, statues, sculptures and costumes of the African People are quite impressive.

Frank Willett has done his homework but more importantly he has filled every page full of roaring images that speak to the traditions and the images of the African people. This book serves to give us a rapid, excellerated peek into the past. It was very revealing in the geometric structure of the objects, the color, rhythums, shapes, forms and symbolisim. Whether you are a history teacher, student, business person or artist you'll find this book very handy and informing.
