The BEST!Review Date: 2006-11-16
My answer is..... "I am just so witty that I recite them from memory, my dear!"
But the TRUTH is... this damn book right here.
It is the best dictionary of quotes I have ever seen, and believe me, I have looked.
This one is the best.
The reason that it is the best, is the quotes given are not STUPID!
They are actually relevant and good. Every single day I post a quotation on my webpage, and this book has been my savior, when my own inspiration has been running shallow. Really good.
I bought it.
You should, too.
A Treasure, by fermedReview Date: 2002-04-04
While surfing the book I came across this quotation by Henry Kissinger, on the occasion of Nixon's nomination for president in 1968: "This man, of course, is a disaster. Now the Republican Party is a disaster. Fortunately, he can't be elected--or the whole country would be a disaster area." And this by Nixon, used frequently in reference to Kissinger: "My Jew boy," cited in Isaacson's "Kissinger: A Biography," 1992.
I'm sorry that not a single citation by Borges made the cut. At least his marvelous characterization of England and Argentina after the Falkland's war should have made it: "It was a fight of two bald men over a comb." The book also has its irritants: it contains no index of first words or fist lines. Thus, if one wants to know who said "Play it again, Sam," there is no easy way of finding out that NOBODY in Casablanca uttered those words. To find out, one must know that Casablance was written by Julius Epstein, look him up in the index, and there on page 530 you will see that it was Ilse (Ingrid Bergman) who said "Play it, Sam. Play "As Time Goes By." Finally, there is the irritant of the page numbers: instead of being centered (top or bottom) or on the outer margins of the pages, the numbers were placed in the inner margins, so that one cannot do a quick flicking of pages to find what we are looking for, but rather the book must be opened entirely to see then hidden page numbers near the center fold.
Still: the paperback edition of this thick volume is sturdy and will likely withstand rugged use. For under twenty bucks, it is a highly recommended bargain, and a useful reference book.

After reading dozens of quote books, I have seen ample proof that too many quote compilers spend more time copying each others' work than finding NEW material; this sometimes results in the same incorrect information showing up in several different books. The Quotationary is a very pleasant exception, and the source information has proven near-perfect in accuracy.
If you can only buy one major quote dictionary, this one is an outstanding choice.

and what a Secret!!Review Date: 2008-02-07
Thus begins a very unlikely adventure for the Cooper trio. In Togwana, they meet Dr. Jennifer Henderson, an African-American geologist from Stanford University, who has also been summoned. They face the new dictator Idi Nkromo, a cruel, heavy-fisted ruler. The problem facing these newcomers is the Stone of Togwana, not a stone of nature, not a man-made stone, but a mountain-size creation blocking the range between two actual mountains. What is more, it appears overnight, fully there. The Togwanians call it a baloa-kota, a curse, a plague. The dictator has called a man of archaelogy and spirit and a woman of science to disappear the stone, because the dictator plans to perish the people beyond--the Motasas, stereotypical bone-wearing, spear-chunking Africans.
This new "mountain" measures three miles wide and two miles high. Once they begin to measure and test it, all manner of supernatural things begin to occur. The small group flies to the top in a small aircraft to examine the Stone there. When a monstrous snowstorm threathens to annihilate them, they fly off but strong currents force them to land on the cannibal side among the Motasas. Whereas Togwanians on the other side fear this surreal structure, the Motasas recognize it for what it is: a sign from God.
Let it be said that this is just the beginning of a seemingly parallel world in which a Christ-like personage figures into their mythos and religion. The snake bites them to make them do bad. Coincidentally or not, the villagers have built their houses on stone foundations made of the same red rock as this new mountain. They believe that God will send them water through this mountain so their village will survive and flourish. There are many other direct references to events in the Bible.
Frank Peretti is a popular Christian writer, who weaves stories of faith tested by trial and tribulations. In this series of young adult Christian novels featuring the Cooper trio, Christian values and codes are at the core. Even in their troubling early teens, Jay and Lila remain children of faith, as reflected through their behavior.
This little story is a quiet victory of faith, demonstrated by the Coopers and the Motasas, a seemingly most unlikely people to follow God, which is the point--God can touch all peoples. The novel is a nice read to confirm a young Christian's faith and a reminder of the great working powers of God in all places and in all people. Indeed, God works in mysterious ways to bring about good. But then, you will have to read the book to find out what this Stone brings.

Childhood HillsReview Date: 2008-04-07
" ..evocative ..lush..,,,poetic journey.." Diane MorganReview Date: 2002-01-09
Pat Mullan takes us on a poetic journey through Ireland, the world and childhood. His evocative poetry creates for us lush landscapes, towering cities and weeping hearts that share the sorrow within all of us.
Relationships are key to his poetry, love, loss and remembering. I truly enjoyed his style of writing; it wasn't at all like the rhyming cliché poetry we are overburdened with as we read aspiring poets; it has a rhythm all its own; one could almost hear an Irish lilt to it.
He adds to the end of his book a section in memory of James Dickey that is poignant and stirring reminding us of the vast heritage we have of poets often forgotten.
"You will be moved to joy and sorrow" .....Anne K. EdwardsReview Date: 2001-12-20
by Pat Mullan
Reading this collection of poetry and writings was like holding a conversation with a very interesting person who can fascinate with a hypnotic flow of words. His muse is an old country bard who whispered secrets of the ancient days in the poet's ear. Pat Mullan has translated those secrets onto these pages.
You will be moved to joy and sorrow as you traverse the winding path over these Childhood Hills. Within these hills dwells a child who remembers the man he was, not a man dreaming over a lost youth. He still lives in the poetry contained here.
This author is a spirit freed from the fears of childhood that we all have shared, no matter what shape those fears take, what horrid dreams they inspire. If you allow him, this poet will guide you through imagery and images, familiar and strange, to a destination where understanding waits.
A poem is music of the soul that takes its inspiration from ordinary events, places, and people. It is a music you hear with your heart. I recommend you read Childhood Hills slowly and listen carefully. It will quicken the spirit that lives within.

Best presentation of health informationReview Date: 2000-04-24
Even the most esoteric medical research is presented with terrific clarity, and free of all unexplained jargon--this has got to be some of the **finest** medical writing for the laity i've ever seen. Neither does the author pitch to dummies--like so much of the advertising copy of the vitamin catalogs--for he has nothing to sell, nor does he speak over the heads of his readers.
A Large, Perhaps Overwhelming, Amount of AdviceReview Date: 2006-07-12
This book contains much information for improving one's health and possibly extending one's life. Perhaps the problem with this is that there is so much that can be done that one does not know where to start. For example, there are numerous vitamins and supplements listed. Is one supposed to try to take them all? There are things as diverse as Vitamin B, Coenzyme-Q10, green tea, garlic, ginger, and selenium emphasized. No attempt is made to prioritize the supplements.
Exercise is listed as the closest thing to an antiaging pill. There is also a practical list of stress-busting activities that one can do at home.
There is a good table provided for substitution of foods with high fiber in place of foods with low fiber. Other tables give the vitamin contents of various foods. This book favors the low-fat over the low-carb approach to health. However, the hazards of a high sugar diet in terms of acceleration of aging are mentioned.
Not everything in this book is something one can do without a doctor's prescription. Apropos to this, there is a section on hormone replacement therapy for both men and women.

Superheroes made humanReview Date: 2008-01-27
Superheroes are all through our cultural heritage, especially in comic books, but it takes a particularly talented writer to not only introduce us to new heroes in novel form, but also to show that super-powers aren't necessary to make a super-hero. That the real heroism is in attitude, and determination, and making the most of the abilities you have.
If you're a superhero fan, this is a must-read. And if you're NOT a superhero fan, this is still a must-read - it'll give you insight and compassion for those heroes who works so hard to keep our society safe and strong.

Realism in an unlikely placeReview Date: 2007-02-06
Swan Song is a mystery accented by a love story. The main characters are The Swan and Permafrost, two Superheroes who do not fit the stereotypes of what you think is portrayed in the comics of old. They are humans, flesh and blood. They feel, they hurt, they love, they hate.
The story follows Permafrost as she discovers her estranged father has died. In an effort to get closure on her relationship with him, she travels to Atlantic city to ID the body. She discovers he was murdered and enlists the help of The Swan to investigate. As their findings become more complex, they find themselves getting closer to one another. When things lead to a possible global crisis, they are forced into a situation that will have life changing repercussions.
Fradella writes with conviction, but still manages to keep things light. His details do not venture into the obscure and he gives enough information for us visualize but no more then absolutely necessary. What really impressive again is the realism, the amount of attention to detail on the lives these two people lead in and out of costume. Their emotions are real, their personalities are genuine. You get the idea that someone could actually do what they do and have some kind of life beyond it. But the backlash of real life is also studied. What would happen if they were injured permanently? What would happen if someone really found out who they were, even if it was another Superhero? The duality of their lives is always kept close to the forefront, making us care more about these two people and the consequences they face in what they do. I recommend this to anyone with an open mind about fiction and superheroes.
