Enjoy a foot massage as you help solve a murder.

Review Date: 2007-06-01
Keely Moreno is a foot reflexologist working in The Florida Keys. One of her customers, Maxine Jackson, tries to talk Keely into helping her prove the innocence of Maxine's son Randy. DNA evidence exonerated Randy from the murder of his then girlfriend, Dyanne Darby, and he was released from prison after spending 20 years. Maxine and Randy want to find the real murderer, hopefully with Keely's help. Keely resists for as long as she can, but she is pulled into the investigation, along with her lover Punt Ashford. What follows is exciting and suspenseful. Also, Dorothy Francis's intimate knowledge of The Florida Keys sets a very vivid picture of this area, and this sense of place in her novel adds to the overall suspense. You will enjoy this great read.

fun investigative tale

In 1982 Key West, professional diver Randy Jackson is convicted of murdering his girlfriend Dyanne Darby. Years later DNA proved his innocence. The state freed him, but left him with no money or any employment prospects because no one wants to hire an ex-convict. Randy is bitter over his wrongful incarceration and vows on TV to find the culprit.

Randy's mom Maxine pleads with her office cleaning client foot reflexologist Keely Moreno to investigate as a favor for her. Keely says no as she was involved in an inquiry once before that almost left her dead (see CONCH SHELL MURDER). Instead she asks her boyfriend private investigator Punt Ashford to help. Punt agrees only because an unknown adversary threatened his beloved Keely. Though she tries to stay out of it, Keely seems to step into the middle of a two decade old homicide whether she wants to or not.

The key to this fun investigative tale is Keely who refuses to put her foot into any inquiry as she has learned her lesson; yet in spite of her efforts everyone seems to shove her right into the middle of the mess. The wrongful conviction subplot is fascinating to follow as it subtly supports the notion of using DNA when possible. The prime action comes late because Dorothy Francis provides a deep look inside the souls of her key cast members first. Fans will dive into this fine thriller wondering whether Randy will kill the culprit if uncovered.

This is a rare book that combines solid detailed factual research with good storytelling. Be aware that its focus is economic development, including where relevant discussions of trade and trade policy, and fiscal impact. There is little to no discussion of politics, political thought or political evolution except insofar as they directly bear on the setting of colonial policy.

Now what we need is a book that is just like this one, but about the French colonies.

Superb account of the iniquities of empire
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2001-07-31
This fascinating and scholarly study provides the hard evidence that the British Empire was a disaster for those whom it ruled. For instance, Benjamin Kidd, in 'The Control of the Tropics', wrote that the inhabitants of the tropics had no right to their resources; he held that they must be developed for the general good of the world. In fact they were developed, when they were, only for the general good of the british ruling class, as grasping a bunch of villains as the world has ever seen.

Havinden and Meredith conclude, "Throughout this book we have shown that colonialism and development were largely contradictory and that this produced a gap between the dreams (or myths) of developing the 'great estate' and the economic realities. The structural imbalances in the economies of the British colonies which were apparent by the end of the colonial era were the direct result of the pursuit of the Chamberlain aim of buttressing the British economy with a 'great estate' in the tropics. In the end the Chamberlain dream was abandoned along with formal colonial rule but its persistence over the previous seventy years bequeathed the now ex-colonies a legacy which would continue to inhibit their economic development in the years to come." They wrote, "The Colonial Office's development philosophy still depended upon the belief that once the state had provided a framework ordered government and a basic infrastructure, private entrepreneurs and private capital could be relied upon to initiate and carry out a steady programme of economic advance. ... the development problem was not as simple as this." Pre-1914, "the incomes of most of the inhabitants of the tropical colonies remained pitifully small and their standard of living abysmally low." As now, disgusting levels of wealth fed off vilely low poverty.

Sir Henry Moore, Assistant Secretary at the Colonial Office, wrote in 1939 that, "any proposals for the creation of secondary industry in the Colonial Empire are received with a marked lack of enthusiasm, if not with suspicion. The reason for this, I suggest, appears to me to be found in the more or less unwritten rule that any proposals, whether in the field of industry or tariffs, which give rise to any conflict of economic interest, should be approached from the standpoint that United Kingdom trade interests must rank first, Dominion trade interests second, and those of the Colonial Empire last." For 'trade interests', read fat cats. Plus ca change - yet.

Beautiful, Lasting Career Tribute to a Legendary Star...
Helpful Votes: 3 out of 3 total.
Review Date: 2008-04-12
As if their remarkable biography of the legendary screen star, Kay Francis, wasn't enough, Lynn Kear and John Rossman have returned with another beautifully illustrated volume focusing on the films and career of this often forgotten cinema icon from the 30's and 40's. The Complete Kay Francis Career Record is lavishly illustrated with fabulous photographs from the films of Kay Francis and feature many other fixtures from Hollywood's golden era, among them William Powell, Martha Raye, George Brent, Carole Landis, and Walter Huston and many others. Each of Miss Francis' films is studied and reviewed in-depth with complete film credits, associated trivia, story plotlines, scripted diaglogue, and rare, previously hushed up behind the scenes secrets that are published here for the first time. The book also reviews her stage career which dates back to 1920 and resurfaced in the mid 40's after her fifteen year film career had ebbed. The authors also share with the reader the major radio appearances of Kay Francis as well as her few forays into the new television medium of the early 50's. There is also a revealing section on "The Players" who were a part of Kay Francis' frequently passionate life that includes legendary stars who were Francis co-stars on stage and screen and in many cases, in the bedroom too, and there is also a review of the stage career of Francis' less successful, actress mother, Katherine Clinton... Memorabilia related to Francis' career is researched and presented in an appendix here as are a listing of Miss Francis' residences and perhaps most interesting among the many wonderful illustrations are vintage advertising, soundtrack recording reproductions, and movie magazine covers on which Francis regularly appeared throughout her fashion-fueled career. This is a masterfully researched, entertainingly written, and must have companion volume to Kay Francis: A Passionate Life and Career, the biography published by these authors in 2006... Both of these titles are highly recommended and a must for any serious film buff's library.

Beautifully executed filmography

Some film books appeal to us for their generous use of illustrations, while others we value primarily for the detailed information they provide. "The Complete Kay Francis Career Record" is that rare book that combines both attributes. Your first impulse upon opening the book may be to savor the more than 100 gorgeous photos of Francis, crisply reproduced here, and understandably so. Having done that, go back to page 1 and let Kear and Rossman take you on a guided tour of Francis' filmography. For each of the actress' films, the authors provide a detailed synopsis, behind-the-scenes stories, a keen-eyed critical analysis, and a sampling of published reviews. The authors clearly love Francis and her work, but they are judicious critics who appreciate the best of her films, and are willing to tell the truth, often with a welcome dose of humor, about those that fall short of their goals. If you're already a Francis fan, this book will be nirvana to you; if you're not, Kear and Rossman are likely to make you a convert.

CD-ROM with Works...not a Book...
Helpful Votes: 3 out of 3 total.
Review Date: 2001-06-09
This item is a CD-ROM disk which contains what is called the complete works of Herman Melville. They are NOT the Northwestern/Newberry editions of the works. They appear to be the Constable editions which were published in England in the 1920s; but as far as scholarly usefulness that should not pose a problem. The chapter numberings and basic layout of the works is going to be the same; if one wants to match page numbers with the N/N editions, that should be fairly easy. Each of the novels, short stories, Collected Poems, and CLAREL (the long "epic" poem about the pilgrimage in the Holy Land), as well as Letters, Journals, and Melville's critical writings are each an individual file which can be opened in either Word or Works, then "Find" searches can be used to find particular words or topics mentioned by Melville in all of his writings. There is also included an extensive Bibliography of "more than 5,500 books and articles about Herman Melville

and his writings." At this price, which is the usual price for a medium length hardback book, the purchaser is getting a REAL bargain (even if they are not the N/N editions).

My professor used this book for a numerical methods course, and the computer programs within were helpful, but I wouldnt use this book for an undergrad course. There are no hand-worked examples in the book, which might make this book inappropriate for a first course in the subject.

Excellently written, clear explanation.

I bought the book when I took the course from Yogesh Jaluria (the authur). I found it to be an excellently written book with clear explanation of the numerical methods before each example. This book is a reflection of his teaching which is also superb. It might not be as comprehensive as Numerical Recipe but I found it to be much more tangible and clearer. I highly recommend it to to all engineering AND science students. There are only two grips I have with the book, all the codes are written in FORTRAN 77, which is a bit dated depending on your point of view, the other is that the pages like to fall off over time in the softcover copy.

The benefit for an understanding of musical politics, for standards of performance, for audience civility and for musicology in general, has been incalculable, and it is hard to see how existing standards in any of these fields can be maintained, much less improved without continuous and patient prodding and the occasional outpouring of bile from such a source. Let music lovers, makers, administrators and editors, all please take note! " Concert Life in Puerto Rico" is therefore valuable for use and imporvement but also for pleasure. Who can resist a book that contains cracks like, "the orchestra sounded like a faulty zipper," or that compares the first act of Tosca to La Boheme played backwards?!

This is that kind of books that tell us everything about a scientific topic that we need to learn with basic knowledge. The authors help us to understand the nature of stones and the better way to conserve its characteristics for the future, everywhere you need to apply it: museums, buildings and particular collections. Perhaps the most important contents are the necessary methods and materials you must to apply in order to conserve and/or restore the original values of different kind of stone works. It is definitively a great help for architects, conservators and owners of stone collections.

This book and its follow-on volume 2 of 2 provide us with rare detail of a mostly forgotten chapter of American history. While Francis Parkman is best known for his 7-volume masterpiece "France and England in North America, as well as numerous accounts of Westward expansion, this more focused 2-volume work, in my opinion, brings forward his most impressive writing skills. Parkman literally paints with words, including the most descriptive interpretations I have ever read of the early American frontier and the fascinating range of peoples vying for control or mere survival.

These two volumes are a true pleasure to read and a treasure for those who enjoy the history of North America and its peoples, as well as those who appreciate the power and beauty of the written word.

Strategies for Connecting Thought to Place
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2007-06-21
In the world of environmental design, to believe that the qualities of space can influence the process of thought is pretty heady stuff. Yet, at some base level, it is what brings most designers to the field. Do we make a difference? Will our efforts allow people to FEEL?

Like a gift, Krinke's book, arising from the symposium at the College of Architecture and Landscape Architecture at the University of Minnesota, presents to today's designer the issues at the intersection of space and culture. "Contemporary" of the title refers less to a style of design than to where we find ourselves today and how we, the audience of the information age, respond to the vast and subtle cues of Landscape.

The scripted environment is becoming ubiquitous. Its goals range from better traffic flow to the altar of development: Better Sales. That we become cynical by the offerings of designers is not surprising. But in an about-face from the trend of synthesis--of mixed-use, the contemplative environment offers isolation. Like the black and white photos of this book, it offers a reduction of message. It offers engagement.

Like the landscape profession, indeed, like landscape itself, the messages delivered in this book are quiet and assured. We are trusted by the writers to acknowledge the complexities of the systems within even though the familiarity of individual concepts might wrongly suggest that we already understand. Writing on design need not be confrontational nor exhortative.

We can be grateful to the contributors of this book for daring to take on the task of defining contemplation, examining paths, and presenting by example the experiments into the quest.

-~- Mark Treib contemplates English Garden makers of the early eighteenth century, Shaker architecture, Saiho-ji, De Maria's "Lightning Field", and Easter inflatables on suburban lawns
-~- Heinrich Hermann tours the Salk Institute and Woodland Cemetery
-~- Lance Neckar relates German linguistics to the country's contemporary memorials
-~- John Beardsley sheds light on Luis Barragan, De Maria, the ancient Chinese character Ma and the Spoleto Festival
-~- Rebecca Krinke interviews Michael Singer, and discusses contemplative design of the Blodel's Reflection Garden and the National Library of France

By selecting a broad range of academic perspectives on landscape, Krinke's book benefits from a constantly refreshed voice. For example, her own examinations personally feel and measure the sensations of contemplation and speak to the very human curiosity of space designed for the mind and body. Meanwhile, Neckar introduces recent German memorials within the framework of the country's evolving vocabulary of remembrance: an illuminating cultural looking glass. This variety of voices, photos, and a rare look at Michael Singer's constructed ruin-like interiors are worth the price of admission, and a must for libraries of contemporary landscape literature.
