My 8 yr old son loves the Adam Sharp books. He can't wait for the next one to be written. He's not an avid reader, so it's nice to see him excited to read a book. He felt it was not too easy or too hard to read...he's in second grade. He gave it a "thumbs up!"

Long live Adam Sharp!

This is one of the cleverest series being published for children. It is so funny, and Adam is so cool. My kids love these books - and the new format from Random House is really attractive. The artwork is wonderful, too. How cool is it to go swimming in a tuxedo, looking for sharks. Long live Adam Sharp!

Informative with real-life examples. This book reads very easily unlike a textbook. It's great to read and understand how Sonstegard utilizes Adlerian techniques with a group of high school students. The summaries and explanations give masterful interpretation to what is happening in group. A must read for anyone interested in Adlerian group or even individual therapy!

Bacon delineated the principles of the inductive thinking method and was a revolutionary thinker in his day. This definitive text outlines his break with the Aristotelians and his modern scientific view of nature.
An excellent read.

Francis Bacon's approach to scientific theory was one based on facts instead of religious thoughts and philosophy. This idea being contrary to the thinkers of his day. A fascinating read.

This collection gathers selected correspondence of artist Marcel Duchamp, selecting carefully from a huge volume of letters to provide correspondence to many of his notable friends. The art historian author spent twenty years assembling, translating and annotating these letters; add historical context and background and you have a very accessible, comprehensive collection.

Impeccibly researched, designed, and presented, these selected letters retain their original type, language, and format, so you feel like Duchamp's personality is laid bare. This book has been invaluable for me in understanding the person behind some of the 20th century's most amazing artistic practices. If you're interested in modern art, buy this book!

Rigas Doganis is one of the most well known serious authors on the air transport business. His seminal work on airline economics "Flying Off Course: the Economics of International Airlines" has been an indispensable guide and reference to managers, practitioners, students and other stakeholders of the air transport business since the early 1980s.

Doganis has established himself as a guru in the aviation industry and has added other important books including "The Airline Business in the 21st Century" and "The Airports Business", all of which have been very useful additions to my library and are excellent sources of critical information pertaining to the fascinating airline industry.

"The Airline Business" is a timely book that delves into the latest challenges that the airline industry has been grappling with through the deep recession and crisis of the first four to five years of the new millennium. In addition to the events of 9/11, the continued threat of terrorism, the SARS epidemic and the second Iraq War and other challenges, the industry is currently mired in the problem of ever escalating fuel prices.

This book provides readers with important insights into the impact of the various recent shocks and crisis on the future of the industry. In particular, Doganis explores and explains how the low cost phenomenon, the use of the latest online distribution systems, the impact of continued liberalisation and globalization, the major airline alliance groupings and consolidation of the industry will affect the airline business model.

This is a well written book that should be a valuable reference book for all practitioners, managers and other stakeholders of the air transport business.

Incredible story of faith and courage

Blessed Alexandrina Maria da Costa of Portugal vowed to obey the command given to her by Jesus "set the world on fire" with love for Him. Bedridden and paralyzed, she suffered tremendous torments both physically and spiritually in her service to God. "The Agony and the Glory" is a magnificent testament of one woman's faith and unending love for God.

Although Blessed Alexandrina was of course a Catholic mystic, any Christian can appreciate her story. I recently re-read at a time of spiritual crisis and found it tremendously inspiring. Highly recommend, and I hope to live to see the day that she is beatified and takes her official place on the roll of God's saints.

Our standard secondary school history jumps abruptly from Jamestown and Plymouth Rock to Lexington & Concord. The intervening 150 years are barely mentioned. The Jennings trilogy examines this period. In the instant volume we see the native Americans neither as passive victims nor noble savages but as politicians, diplomats, merchants and power players. Though probably doomed from the start due to the absence of immunity to European diseases, for a period of several decades they interacted with the early colonists on a basis of near parity. The Iroquois actually attempted with some skill the become the central player that would resolve the French-English rivalry and leave them at the center and in command. Jennings shows us that though this didn't happen and though the odds may have been against it such goals were far from fantasy. It's enough to cause one to imagine that "chutzpah" is a Mohawk term. One can only wonder, if the Indians had not been devastated by disease what the political map of North America would look like today.

Jennings slays a bunch of comfortable historical assumptions

Francis Jennings, long associated with the Newbury Library American Indian collections has brought his vast knowledge to bear on the subject of the Iriquois as the fearsome 5 or 6 nations who independently cowed both their fellow tribes and the English and French colonists. He proves it wasn't so with so many documents of which we have never heard in our schoolbook history texts that I wonder how such material escaped notice previously. In the process he slays some American Sacred Cows such as Francis Parkman. One learns that the Indian frontier was no such thing and didn't exist but was a commonly inhabited piece of terrain, peopled by various tribes and the European invaders who traded with them. Relations were, for the most part, reasonably amicable, which accounts for the fact that during later wars the Eastern Indians frequently exhibited what we call civilized treatment of enemies and prisoners. (Of course there were the exceptions, usually well justified.) But in the beginning, the Dutch, Swedes, English and French, all found it necessary to deal with the various tribes quite diplomatically in order to survive, and use them in their wars of empire with one another. Furs in return for trade goods were king. The undoubted reality is such a vast contrast with the accepted picture of our frontier that this book, as well as Jennings others in this series, should be required reading to repair the damage done in our schools by claptrap such as Parkman and other revered historians who followed his lead, writing off the Indians as barabarians and the frontier as a clearly delineated line across which whites stepped only if they were willing to take their lives into their hands. Instead we find two cultures living amicably in common communities up until the first half of the 1700's when the balance was upset by driving out the Indians such as the Delewares and Shawnees so that they located in the Ohio country and became relatively independent. The Iriquois had a large hand in this and it was their undoing. Read the book. It is a complicated subject but well worth digesting. I recommend reading it in small doses and having an atlas nearby.

An American Health Dilemma is a brilliant book, well-written and with a strong scientific foundation. It is clear and accessible to the non-specialist as well as the specialist. The first part of the book, a survey of racist thinking in the West, is one of the best summaries I have read in years. The book is interesting in its sociological, public health and social theory aspects. The notes are very clear, so that if you want further information you know where to find it. I highly recommend the book. It is a treasure trove of information, not only for Americans but for others interested to find out more about the perplexing question of race and health.

A Contemporary Challange to America's Health Care System

Review Date: 2000-09-19
An American Health Dilemma, by W. Michael Bryd and Linda A Clayton presents the challenge of the gross disparity in health care in America. Tracing the history of Western racial bias which has informed the medical world's relation to people of African descent, the authors have presented a clear demonstration of the effects of racism on medical care in the United States of America. This perspective is an important one, as the nation again considers the disintegration of health care for all. This well documented study, is readable and challenging to all who are interested in the future of our society.
