Here is a follow-up book to "CinemaScope One: Stupendous in 'Scope" which provided a general overview of the CinemaScope (or widescreen) Revolution initiated by 20th Century-Fox in 1953 with "The Robe". This new book concentrates on 20th Century-Fox, that creative and innovative Hollywood studio which, under the inspired leadership of Darryl F. Zanuck, led the whole motion picture industry out of the TV doldrums and into the 21st century. Here is a complete list of Fox's CinemaScope releases and here are all the facts on some of the Fox films that captured the public's attention (and more importantly, money). No less than 140 of them in fact are lovingly detailed with extensive cast and technical credits and much background information. And to round the book off nicely, there are lots of interesting reproductions (in black-and-white, alas) of contemporary CinemaScope posters from all over the world.

The poetry of James Walton Fox is a kind of echo of the life force-sometimes ungrammatical: often leaping beyond the scope of linearity-it nevertheless packs a punch not unlike the feeling one has at a rock show where the sound is more than the ears can take; yet one's lungs pulse with the noise in sublime sympathy with the sound that forces understanding to hustle in the face of pure sonic rhythm. "The Circular Zoo" is a must have for anyone interested in the new American verse.

I became aware of this book some years ago but was unable to locate a copy since it was out of print. How I would have loved to have "run away to the circus" in those bygone days. I'm a percheron breeder and love the action and drama of big teams in action.
This book is a great cronicle of the days that we'll never see again of how the horse helped develope the U.S. as we know it today. These horses were as crucial as the ones used to spread the settlers west in the building of American. Each era has it's horse heros and this book shows the heros of the Circuses.

I loved this book! Fox reminds me of Alice Munro sometimes and Lorrie Moore other times. The characters are all disconnected and desperately trying to change that, and their stories are beautiful, wry, and moving. It was very moved by the book. Get it now!

A glorious book! If you are searching for a book with easy-to-play carols, this is it. The added bonuses: with each carol you get beautiful and diverse Christmas artwork and a short history of each carol, all on pages with a nice, glossy finish in large, easy-to-see print. This book has all the standards, a few not-so-common but lovely carols, plus some secular favorites. All these things in a very pleasing layout make this a must-have book.

Jemima Puddle-duck wants to hatch her eggs all by herself, but the farmer's wife will not let her. In desperation, whe decides to make a nest away from the farm. So she sets off to look for a nice quiet spot to lay her eggs. While waddling about in search of a dry nesting-place, she comes across a fox reading a newspaper. After hearing her story, the cunning fox tells Jemima of his wood-shed full of feathers where she may sit as long as she like. Nick has done it again!
This book is such a wonderful glimpse into the experience of mounted crow hawking, that the reader feels as though they are in attendance on one of the hunts in northern England. No mind-numbing tedium here... if you're fed up with falconry books that waste time and space with all the usual repetitive "how-to" stuff of falconry (equipment, training, basic husbandry) you will be pleasantly surprised by Nick's ability to cut right to the proverbial heart of the matter. This is without a doubt the best, and most complete book ever written on the topic of hawking from horseback in open country.

I accidentally came across this book at a gay studies workshop a few years ago. I had never heard of the author, and have yet to encounter anyone else who has read the book. It is an autobiography ... the author grew up in Missouri in the late 1800s and writes of his coming of age as a gay man in a time and place where such a thing was literally unknown and even unimaginable. The writing is clear and direct. The story is simple and touching. I very much recommend this little book to anyone who is interested in learning more about our history as a people. It is not a book about neurosis or alienation. It is the life and words of a man who I would very much like to have known.
