Great book! If you know a bit about photography and just need something to get you over the plateau of taking okay images to taking great pictures, this is the book! It explains everything from basics to advanced. I loved it. Explanations are in normal English at first but as you read on you develop a vocabulary that this book uses.

This book stands the test of time, having been a continual favorite for me and my kids for several years now. It has been my daughter's favorite book since before she could read, and it remains her favorite despite the fact that she now reads and enjoys long chapter books. The illustrations hold endless depth and fascination -- in how many pictures can you find Cafe Max or the long-eared dog? The story is mystical, sincere and very sweet. I can't think of a better book for children or for adults to read with children.

delightfully bizarre story!!

In a kingdom far, far away, in the deep and dark cellars and dungeons of a King's castle, alchemists have been toiling away for centuries to find the secret for turning metals (or anything else) into gold. For centuries, they've failed at this attempt, though in Mr. Thompson's book, "The Last Alchemist", we meet the pop-eyed, withered and completely stressed out Spinifex. Spinifex is the 19th alchemist for the kingdom, and the greedy king has given him until the end of the year to find, FINALLY, the secret for turning metals into gold.

Spinifex sets off on this quest with a passion, doing research in the vast (and completely bizarre) library, cooking up everything he possibly can think of to make gold, all the while bossing around his small apprentice, Arthur. For his own part, Arthur is far more interested in things like sunflowers than smelly potions, and as the story goes on, the reader gets the distinct impression that as Spinifex's experiments build and build up to a gigantic machine, something downright catastrophic is going to happen before the story is over!

The plot and text of "The Last Alchemist" is fun and easy to read, but what will REALLY hook readers are the illustrations. Brightly colored with many shades of almost fluorescent pink, blue, orange and red, the book is a veritable treat for the eyes. On each page fantastically odd things are happening that almost defy explanation. The castle's library, for example, is right out of M.C. Escher's world, with staircases going upside down, sideways, and off into impossible directions. Walking all over these stairs, reading books, hiding in crannies or peeking out of cracks are hooded figures, strange creatures and beady lil' eyes. Doors are on walls which are really floors for other stairs, and many of the books themselves are odd, winged creatures. Teeny little creatures crawl through and around Spinifex's laboratory equipment, bringing the wrinkled and gray Spinifex the strange ingredients for his experiments.

It's hard to think of a close equivalent in illustration style that really gives an accurate picture. The crowded pages of "Where's Waldo?" comes to mind, but Mr. Thompson's illustrations are far more bizarre than anything Waldo had seen. There's a slightly macabre feeling to these pictures, and if I was hard pressed I'd have to say it resembles the album cover of Elton John's 1975 "Captain Fantastic & the Brown Dirt Cowboy". There's a certain Monty Python-esque feeling to the illustrations.

I personally LOVE this book, as do both of my children and the students I've shown this to at school. Some kids said that very young children might find it "really weird" because of all the little creatures crawling over the pages or the inanimate objects (books, flasks, lamps, etc) that have legs or eyes. Highly recommended for those interested in a visual tour-de-force!

Every time I pick up this little gem of a coming-of-age book, I find something new to wonder about. The heroine, Gillian ("Gilly") Freeborn, proves that the epistolary form is not dead. The entire novel is made up of letters from her to the Agony Aunt of a local newspaper, over such fourteen-going-on-fifteen woes as getting breasts, dorky friends, and unrequited crushes. What lifts this book up out of the ordinary plane is that Gilly is a budding writer, and this is reflected in her turn of phrase. She is so witty it hurts. Take her response to the Agony Aunt's reassurance that " 'a lot of girls go through life flat-chested and are perfectly happy.' Well, let me tell you that this news has gone down like a lead balloon in this department. Of course, thinking long term, I might save money on underwear, but who cares?" (I am quoting from memory here.) Aside from the literally laugh-a line comedy, the book has a poignant, serious undercurrent: there is something touching in her attempts to come to terms with sex, juxtaposed with her efforts to resolve her hippie-turned-bourgeois parents' marital crisis. At the height of a screaming match, Gilly muses: "And all the time I was thinking that these two fierce and furious warriors had actually _done it_, by choice." As she plays 1960s music nonstop to remind them of their lost love, we also get a glimpse into their lost _youth_; the transience of time and the changes which time wreaks on people show through the sparkling prose, like a dark shadow. In the end the shadow is wrestled to the ground, but the seriousness of the outlook, the desire to seize every moment and make the most of life, remains. I have always been surprised that this book never won a prize. It's priceless.

I could go on and on, but the summary is that this is a very funny and charming book for all ages. Read it. You won't be sorry.

As a geanealogist for many years, I was thrilled to discover Nick Herald, a sleuth with a family link that is all tied up in the shipyard. A lot of people, when they came to this country, changed their names or their persona, but this is the first time I ever ran across a ship with a new face. Jimmy Fox makes the plot line so believable, I scrambled to try to find the documentation he so brilliantly created. What I did find was that the verification was in the author's head. The characters were as endearing--and varied--as the plot. A brilliant piece of literature. I look forward to future books in this series.

Fox is `quick like a fox' and just as cunning in his second Nick Herald Genealogical Mystery. With returning protagonist Nick Herald, from Deadly Pedigree, and his faithful yet disabled assistant Hawty, Jimmy Fox gives us another taste of New Orleans--and a dash of spicy murder on the side.

Lineages and Lies starts with the murder of a doctor whom Nick had an appointment with the night the man was killed. From there, the amateur sleuth and professional genealogist is thrown into a series of murders, and Nick discovers that a ship's manifest may hold the key to solving them. With thorough research and quick wit, Nick and Hawty delve into the secrets of the past to solve a case in the present.

Like Jackpot Blood, the first Fox novel I read, Lineages and Lies is just as delightfully suspenseful, a fun read. It is rare to find a protagonist with a disabled assistant, and Hawty's character adds humor and emotion to the story. I look forward to reading more from Jimmy Fox, a master of genealogical mysteries. Way to go, Jimmy!

A tale seen through other creatures' eyes

Review Date: 2007-12-22
Throughout "A Fox Called Sorrow", this talented Australian writer, Isobelle Carmody, vividly reflects how alienating the human world is to other creatures, and how pervasive and confusing. Cars are terrifying "road beasts" and trains are "road serpents", and Little Fur, the elf troll, cannot set foot on the wide, black roads, lest she break her contact with the earth, which suffocates beneath these poisonous black veins, and with the "earth magic" that assists her abilities as a healer of injured animals and trees. Most heartbreaking is the fox's, Sorrow's, tragic history at the hands of humans.

This beautiful story has so much to offer that is immensely valuable and original, in its poignancy, in its portrayal of integrity and compassion and bravery within and through tragedy and cruelty and grief, and its very important underlying messages of environmentalism, respect for the earth and for all creatures, and the strength of love and hope, even through the darkest despair and loss. And the ending is wonderful!

I selected this beautiful book quite randomly - partly because of the cover's gorgeous velvet nape on my edition - and I'm so impressed.

This is a wonderful story, BEAUTIFULLY illustrated.

An adorable African-American boy who lives in a big city finds a baby reindeer. He cares for the little reindeer on the roof of his high-rise apartment until the following year, when it is grown up and ready to return to Santa.

This is an especially good book for all those kids without chimneys who live in apartments! :) The illustrations are sweet and gently humorous. You will love reading this beautiful book to your kids-- it is full of both the magic and the goodness of Christmas.

This sweet story is about a young reindeer who is accidentally left behind and the little boy who takes care of him for a year. The caring, unselfish friendship between the child and the animal is a wonderful expression of the spirit of Christmas. The snowy North Pole scenes, the colorful elves, and the magical citiscape viewed from the rooftop of the boy's high-rise are beautiful. My kids instantly loved this tale of friendship and adventure. We have read it dozens of times. It will surely be a favorite for years.

My two-year-old son first discovered Look Out, Patrick at the local library several years ago. The charming story immediately captured all of our hearts, as my son would constantly ask, "Read Patrick, Mommy! Read it again!" Having read and re-read numerous books to my four children, "Patrick" (as we affectionately nicknamed it) stands out among the best of them. Such a sweet and clever story is refreshing. Highly recommended by this family!

My two boys loved this book. The mouse is adorable, and the children loved the fact that they could see the dangers Patrick couldn't. My youngest had a lot of fears, and I used the book to point out to him that many things are only scary if we let them be, and that a positive attitude saves you from a lot of worry. Patrick's happy outlook and sweetness in the face of the evils in his world provides a great message, and not just for kids! Exciting without being scary. Absolutely gorgeos illustrations and the cutest little mouse I've seen in any book.

At work one of my co-workers had this dictionary and we all used to borrow it. It is a great tool and very complete. So most of us decided to buy their own copy.I live in Brazil where most dictionaries available on the market are of British English .It is difficult to find a good dictionary of American English as Macmillan's.
