A Passion for Wildlife chronicles the first fifty years of the Canadian Wildlife Service, the federal agency which is responsible for conducting research on certain species of concern, enforcing the Migratory Bird Act and the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora, and educating the Canadian public about its rich natural heritage. It is an impressive and noteworthy history, which I very much enjoyed reading. A Passion for Wildlife was first published in its entirety in Volume 113, Number 1 of The Canadian Field-Naturalist, and, I believe, is still available through the Ottawa Field-Naturalists Club at a much lower cost.

Lori Foster Shines!

In "Trapped!" by Lori Foster, love burns hotter than fire. Rosie has always loved her childhood friend, Ethan Winters. She loved him enough to back off when Ethan became engaged to another woman, loved him enough to be his friend when he was jilted, and loved him enough to try some shock therapy to show him the searingly passionate new possibility she'd been burning to offer. She figured if the handsome firefighter woke up half naked in bed with her, they'd both find out once and for whether passion can burn between them.

***A terrific 'friends-to-lovers' story. I love those kinds or romance stories and this one starts out so fun! It's fun to watch Ethan struggle with his feelings until he finally caves...

"Pastel: Portraits" is a dynamic journey through the various techniques needed to master the profound art of chalk pastels. By reading this thorough guide, pastels transformed from being my worst enemy to my best friend. I watched my works change from desperate, melodramatic abstracts to well-developed, realistic portraits. The person that I have to thank for this miracle is Ken Goldman. His kind and light-hearted nature are translated in this book with its gentle and open suggestions. I can say without a doubt that Ken Goldman has changed my life.

Living in Hawaii one often has to reckon with visiting family/friends and this is the book I give them before I send them on their island travels. The information is accurate and practical-the kind of material that helps you meet your travel needs. There are some contemporary cultural events (on Oahu especially) that are covered in the book that will contribute to the Hawaii experience for the first time visitor as well as the returning one.

A must read for everyone involved with the foster care system

This book made me cry, made me angry, and made me appreciate the dedication of foster-care parents. If any of the parents are like Mary in the book, they are angels, and not mercenary (as i had previously thought.) They work 24 X 7 for the benefit of the children in their charge, where the system only works for a small fraction of that time.
The book was well written and once I picked it up, I could not put it down. It is a must-read for every foster-care professional, foster-care parent, anyone who has ever had children, or has been a child.

An unforgettable story that reads like a movie

Once I started this book, I couldn't put it down. Nash has written a fascinating and compelling book that feels like a script for a made-for-TV movie, and it's all the more compelling knowing that it's his true story. One of the unique things about A Phoenix Rising is that it's told as if Bryan is right there telling you his story; the editing is not perfect, but it's not meant to be -- the story is actually make more real by leaving in the occasional sentence in imperfect English, as if a friend were retelling their life to you over coffee. Refreshingly raw and authentic, Nash describes each scene in such vivid detail that you can't help but be there in your mind. Buy this book; you won't be disappointed!

For such a small book, "Photo Tinting" by Ed Krebs is packed with useful information. The illustrations are great for the beginning and intermediate artists, and this is the only book that actually went beyond basic instructions. I also purchased a book on hand coloring photos that cost three times as much, and I am much happier with "Photo Tinting". Congratulations on giving the extra detailed information that no other books provide.

Pilgrims In Aztlan

Miguel Mendez' response to the social ills of the day is to write about the crude realities of some of the experiences of the undocumented immigrant on his way to the U.S. Mendez lets us know that he will be using the voice of the oppressed to describe their suffering. In Pilgrims in Aztlan, Mendez writes about the soical and political by talking about borders. Borders that are difficult to explained and be visualized. In Mendez's story there is no protagonist, only the human journey of people who seem to have no names. Everything gets in the way of this human journey. The place of exodus, poor, uncaring, does't seem to mind. The place of destination does not welcome them only exploits them. Suffering is universal and knows no borders or time. Yet, the universal suffering of mankind are but individual stories of people. To describe these suffering Mendez has used the tool of literature to document and tell stories of human suffering, least they be forgotten.

Best Series for Beginning Readers
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2000-12-21
The Get Ready, Get Set, Read! series is the best for beginners. It uses word families so beginners can build an extensive vocabulary quickly. The characters are cleaver animals and the plot is interesting while maintaining a level young readers can relate to. The word list is helpful for sight words. The "Bring-It-All-Together" books are a perfect review it is fun for the reader to revisit the same characters from the other books in a new situation. My five year old has now completed all five sets, and is one of the best readers in her Kindergarten. She looks forward to reading the books over and over. She loves to impress her friends by reading to them.
