Building by the BookReview Date: 2000-07-01
For me, this book would have been worth purchasing just for the introduction. I especially valued the section on Foursquare houses; my home is a Foursquare, which is part of the basis of my nomination. The Sears Roebuck catalog houses and Craftsman sections were also very interesting.
In all, "Building by the Book" reflects a thorough study in what is probably a neglected period of building, whereby middle class owners were enabled to build architect-designed homes which would otherwise have been reserved for the wealthy. Pattern books also provided direction for local builders.
As a preservationist and owner of a brick Foursquare classical revival pattern house built in the 1920's Craftsman era, I am hopeful that more of these homes will be saved for future appreciation. They generally exhibit a uniqueness that precedes the builder/developer subdivisions we see today.
I had hoped to find some history on the "Architect's Small House Service Bureau of the United States, Incorporated", active in the 1920's, which was administered by the American Institute of Architects and from which my pattern house was derived. If anyone has information, I'd love to have know.
Pattern houses were a boon to average citizens here and throughout the United States, enabling them to experience a share of the American Dream "that every American should be able to own a single-family house on its own green acre". The New Jersey study is an educational guide applicable across the nation.

By ghost of a red rose "ghost of a red rose" (Mesa, AZ USA) - See all my reviews
The Burning of Evelyn Foster was published in 1977. It is nonfiction, an investigation of the murder of a young woman which occurred in Ireland (if I remember correctly.) According to the reference work, "Encyclopedia of World Crime" by Jay Robert Nash, Evelyn Foster was murdered on Jan. 6, 1931, "at an isolated spot on the moors known locally as Wolf's Nick". The car was set on fire and, waking, she escaped from the interior. The car exploded, after which two men found her and took her home. "In the brief hours before she died, she told what had happened to her." (vol. II (D-J), p. 1202). But the case was never solved.
It is an excellent book, well-written and well-researched. It is a very vivid depiction of life in rural Ireland in the early 1930's. Even more vivid - and chilling - are the accounts of the discovery of the crime, and Evelyn's last hours as she told her story while she lay dying. I read the book several years ago, and it has haunted me ever since, to the extent that I went through considerable effort to track down a copy that I could purchase.

Essential Reading for Aspiring Sports ExecutivesReview Date: 2005-06-27
Not only is the book exceptionally informative, providing excellent examples and explanations, it's also a fascinating read that can provide a different perspective on how decisions are made (and should be made) in sports. It's rare to have a textbook that's this much fun to read; rarer still that it's actually insightful, valuable, and applicable to the real world.
This isn't just a great textbook -- it's a great book period.

I couldn't put it down!Review Date: 2002-05-07
From the very first page, I was swept into the story. My own beloved dog had died just a week before I read this novel, and so the character of Dog especially appealed to me. It is not easy to fully develop an animal character in a realistic novel, but Chan achieves this admirably. I had tears in my eyes as I read it. Dog was so "real" that I could almost pat him!
And the historical research! As a historical novelist myself, I am very picky when I read other historicals, but this one is spot-on. Bravo!
I also loved the touch of fantasy.
The Carved Box is a universal tale that transcends age limits.
